I came to photography
through working in theatre in London, England. I spent 10 years working at the
Coliseum theatre, home to the English National Opera and it was there that I really started to take photography seriously. The performances were world class and I started photographing rehearsals. I would run out to the front of house and shoot as much as I could before dashing back to do scene and lighting changes. I would go home and excitedly process the film.
In the summer months the Opera season would end and we would open our stage door to visiting ballet companies from all over the world. This is when I discovered just how difficult it was to photograph dance.
I met and married an American ballet dancer and moved to Boston where I started working in the production department of Boston Ballet. Not long after this I was offered a chance to become a full time assistant to a photographer and I leapt at the invitation. It was a dream come true.
Next, I moved to Atlanta and started out on my own, shooting for Atlanta Ballet and other
clients. One of my most memorable assignments was traveling with Atlanta Ballet to Havana to photograph Cuba National Ballet. It was also my move to the digital world and I was nervous. It turned out to be a wise choice because the one and only day I could get into the studios to shoot the dancers coincided was a power outage. No light, except from doorways and some windows, film would have been terrible but digital came though. Another assignment with Atlanta Ballet was photographing Twyla Tharp creating her world premier of Princess and the Goblin. I covered every aspect of the show, costume fittings, rehearsals, and the set going into the theater and the dress rehearsal.
I was elated to see my images in the New York Times.

It all began on a cruise ship more than 30 years ago when a 16 year old dancer met a dashing young maitre d’. Five years later, a dance dy-
nasty was launched from a home base in Roswell, Georgia, that now includes Tolbert Yilmaz School of Dance, Roswell Dance Theatre, and Dance Fashions. The Tolbert Yilmaz dance empire has continued to prosper since then, led by two com-mitted individuals who have both become leaders in the local dance scene and far beyond.
The Tolbert Yilmaz School of Dance came first, in 1979. Currently a prosperous dance home for more than 900 students and 21 faculty mem-bers, the school encompasses the performing non-profit group Roswell Dance Theatre. The need for a convenient dancewear retailer was filled when the couple opened Dance Fashions in 1980, now a two-location business in Roswell and Cumming, GA. But what to sell that was unique and needed by dancers of all ages, sizes and movement genres?
Tolbert Yilmaz Manufacturing quickly followed in 1982, and it currently serves consumers around the world through the Dance Fashions stores. This branch of the Tolbert Yilmas empire includes a Eurotard division which manufactures dancewear, and a Julie France line of shape wear. TYM sells to distributors and retailers in over 55 countries and their labels are
two of the top five dancewear brands in the world.“We love being in the dance industry, and
our plan is to continue growth and advancement. We will continue evolving through attending international dance conventions and tradeshows in such places as Paris, London, Tokyo, New York, and more,” says Nancy Tolbert.
Success in all facets of this competitive industry reveals the couple’s drive, determination and great business acumen. Ms. Tolbert also demonstrates leadership as President of the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association this year. SERBA is a branch of Regional Dance America.
As prosperous as the business continues to be, the dynamic duo’s greatest achievements are firmly planted in the individual students they serve. Their students have leapt from Roswell, GA to such prestigious companies as Alvin Ailey, New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Houston Ballet, Ballet Hispanico, and more.
“Being able to connect with children and ex-pose them to the love of dance has been the great-est accomplishment over the years,” Ms. Tolbert says. “This satisfaction is twofold: being able to see students reach their dreams and achieve success in the dance world, plus seeing the 3 year old I once taught returning with her own 3 year old to be taught the same love of dance.”

CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAYS THROUGH MUSICby Jessica Joris
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) spreads the joy of the season
with seven holiday programs beginning December 5, 2013, and concluding December 31, 2013. The annual Coca-Cola holiday concert series will feature several family-friendly, fun-filled concerts.
To kick off the holiday season, ASO Director of Choruses Norman Mackenzie will lead the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Chorus in Handel’s Messiah (Part I) on December 5 and 7. The following Sunday, December 8, guests can enjoy “ASO Gospel Christmas,” in which the ASO and powerhouse Atlanta Gospel Singers lift your spirit in an inspiring program of Christmas selections.
The following weekend, December 13 and 14, features “Christmas with the ASO.” This celebrated Atlanta Christmas event conducted by Norman Mackenzie features the Orchestra and Chorus, Morehouse College Glee Club, and Gwinnett Young Singers — more than 400 musicians!
On December 15, Jere Flint leads “ASO Kid’s Christmas,” a pops-style concert featuring the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. This family-friendly performance offers a lively collection of every kid’s favorite Christmas music. Festive sing-a-longs, special guest performers, and a finale
featuring everyone’s favorite jolly old elf make this concert the perfect way for families to embrace the Christmas spirit!
Later in the month, ASO Prin-cipal Pops Conductor Michael Krajewski hosts his annual anything-goes holiday variety show, “A Very Merry Holiday Pops.” These festive concerts are filled with the season’s merriest songs, a jitterbug-ging Santa, and gleeful choruses, and take place on December 19, 20, and 21.
Finally, guests can ring in the New Year with “ASO New Year’s Eve” on December 31. The ASO and guest conductor Jack Everly, along with vocalist Judy McLane and pianist Michael Chertock, will present an evening of Gershwin favorites, including “I Got Rhythm” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” as we welcome 2014!
The ASO’s holiday concert series has something for everyone and creates unique ways for families and friends to come together and enjoy the holidays. The Orchestra’s holiday concerts are made possible through an endowment from the Livingston Foundation in memory of Leslie Livingston Kellar.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL RETURNS FOR IT’S 24TH YEAR AT
ALLIANCE THEATRE
by Kathleen Covington
November 29-December 29, 2013
After 20 years playing Scrooge, Chris Kayser will retire from the role after this seasonThe most heartwarming story of the season comes to life with holiday carols, stunning stage magic and your favorite Atlanta actors. Directed by Rosemary Newcott, The Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth, A Christmas Carol has become a tradition for many families around the southeast.
Celebrate this magnificent staging of Charles Dickens’s classic Christmas tale and Ebenezer Scrooge’s eye-opening Christmas Eve journey. Scrooge is visited by four ghosts offering perspective: his old partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. A joyous celebration of the holidays.
After 20 years playing the role of Scrooge, Chris Kayser has announced he will retire from the role after this season. “Stories like A Christmas Carol become classics for a reason. Brilliant writing, vivid characters, and a story that touches on the human condition in a way that bears up under repeated revisiting. It’s kept me coming back for 20 years,” said Kayser. “It’s been my privilege to participate in the Christmas Carol project at the
Alliance Theater for the past two decades. Now I feel that after this year, it’s time to pass on the role of Scrooge to someone else. Given the deep, rich talent pool in Atlanta and the sure hand of Rosemary Newcott at the helm, I’m confident that the project will go on re-energized and better than ever.”
Don’t miss Chris Kayser’s incredible farewell season.
Tickets for A CHRISTMAS CAROL are available now. To purchase, visit www.alliancetheatre.org/christmas or contact the Alliance Box Office at 404-733-5000.

ATLANTA BALLET’S NUTCRACKERRETURNS TO THE FABULOUS FOX THEATRE FOR ITS 54TH SEASON
There will be a new guest at the Petrov party this year when Atlanta Ballet brings its most popular production back to life.
Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker, sponsored by Belk, Inc., will return to the Fabulous Fox Theatre Dec. 6-29, 2013, joined by special guest artist, master illusionist Drew Thomas.
After upping the magic ante in Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker last season, artistic director John McFall has invited Thomas back. This year Thomas will not only add more illusions and spe-cial effects, but he’ll also perform them during the first two weekends of the run, Dec. 6-15.
Thomas will take on the role of Herr Drosselmeyer, the mysterious, yet charming toymaker responsible for bringing young Marya’s magical journey to life.
Since recreating Nutcracker in 1995, McFall has updated the production every year to keep it vibrant and fresh.
“For five decades now, Atlanta Ballet has been presenting Nutcracker, and we’ve become a holiday tradition for many families in Atlanta,” said McFall. “It’s an honor, but also a great
responsibility. Each year we want to make sure we preserve the tradition, but also keep the magic and the mystery alive. We are thoughtful about each change we make and confident that it will ultimately make for a more enchanting experience. The decision to add real magic and illusions was an easy one. Drew is an amazing talent and with him we’ve been able to let our imaginations run wild and take Nutcracker to the next level.”
What won’t change in this year’s production is the appearance of more than 200 Atlanta area school children performing alongside the professional company, which will be the first chance for many of them to experience the magic of being on the Fox Theatre stage. The Atlanta Ballet Orchestra and the Georgia Youth Choir will also return for all performances.
Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker runs Dec. 6-29 at the Fabulous Fox Theatre. Tickets start as low as $20 and are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased by phone at 855-ATL-TIXX, in person at the Fox Theatre Box Office and the Atlanta Ballet Box Office, or online at www.atlantaballet.com.

The holiday season doesn’t officially begin until Georgia State University’s School of Music presents its annual Gala Holiday
Concert at the Rialto Center for the Arts. A perennial favorite, the concert features more than 200 GSU student and faculty members performing seasonal favorites to put you in the holiday spirit.
This year’s production is part of Georgia State University’s Centennial Celebration, and features the University Singers, the Choral Union, the University Symphony Orchestra, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and many other groups and soloists.
This is the Gala’s 16th year, and during its history it has striven for variety and freshness. According to Dr. Steven A. Harper, the School’s Interim Director, the celebratory aspect of the
event has remained a constant. “The Gala has always been about enjoyment, and though it looks different year-to-year, the sense of fun has always played a big part.” Since this is GSU’s Centennial, this year’s concert represents a return to its roots. “This is a more traditional holiday gala than we’ve had in a while, but every bit as entertaining. The Percussion Ensemble will perform, as will our Brass Ensemble and Saxophone Choir; there’ll be jazz and classical works, sacred and secular pieces, large and small groups, something for everyone to enjoy.”
Among the faculty performers and directors are Director of Choral Activities Dr. Deanna Joseph, Charles T. Wurm Distinguished Professor of Orchestral Studies Mr. Michael Palmer, Director of Bands Dr. Robert Ambrose, and baritone Mr. Dwight Coleman (past-Director of the School).
The performances are at the beautiful Rialto Center for the Arts, Saturday, December 7 (8:00 p.m.) and Sunday, December 8 (3:00 p.m.). Tickets are available through the Rialto Center Box Office (404-413-9849) or online at http://rialto.gsu.edu/.
