The Forum team are constantly working hard to provide a good quality, informative and interesting magazine for our readers. We aim to include as many local events and news items as possible – so if you have a bric-a-brac sale; fete; class or exhibition etc. that you would like advertised for free in our magazine, please contact us at the earliest opportunity and we will include it in our News and Events section.

on top of other bins in the street. So we sort, they do not and so it all goes off to land fill anyway. Like Gill I could go on; well I will.

How come just a short distance away East Hants have a better system of bins and boxes so lots of stuff can be collected and more easily sorted? Please Winchester can we have a glass collection? Silver paper and foil? Batteries. Yes I know they can be taken to the local re-cycling BUT do we get around to it with busy lives?

Who honestly organises their day off around visiting the tip with their bottles and foil? We have enough bottles stacked up to make a very pretty wall and enough foil to insulate the loft, let alone the pile of batteries merrily leaking away in the box.So now perhaps we could all agree with Bill Bryson who advocates a deposit on cans and bottles. This certainly would encourage more folk to actually take their stuff to get money back. Crikey, we could start a fund to build that swimming pool we all want with the stuff we don't want. Sorted!N C

Dear EditorI am writing in relation to the article 'Recycling Rant ' in Issue 51 page 11.

Our house also has a green monster threatening to provoke discussion and sometimes discord between us. Yes, our wheelie bin has become an object not of desire but derision.

Being of a green disposition I try very hard to use the green bin for as much as possible. However, like Gill, I find it accepts less than it rejects.

My husband does not understand this and, because he aims to please, just chucks every used pot and package into the green meanie. This leaves me to either remember to sort through it before it is re-cycling week (incidentally does any one else have to wait and see which bin the rest of the street has wheeled out to know which week it is?)or watch him like a hawk every time he goes near the bin and inform him that if he puts that yoghurt pot or Christmas wrapping PAPER in our bin the whole truck load will go to landfill. How annoying it is that we sort through and then see forbidden articles perched

PERINS STUDENTS ACHIEVE SPORTS AWARDS

Perins community sports college

'hello Pud-swan'by Bryan Beggs

Naomi House Children’s Hospice in Hampshire, as reported last

month, has benefitted to the tune of £3000 from the newly published storybook for children by Andover author Bryan Beggs. ‘Hello Pud-Swan’ [a three-part set] is a story with a difference, which aims to capture the imagination of readers aged from 7 – 10 years, in an INTERACTIVE and EDUCATIONAL way. Topics

of geographical, historical, scientific and cultural interest are woven into the storyline, as are the 7, 8 and 9 times mathematical tables!

All information about these books and where they can be bought can be found on the books’ own website www.pud-swan.org and now the first 17 pages are available to read on Google Books.Tel: 01264 365190

(England U18 Development Squad) and sports leader at Perins, Rosie has worked tirelessly to develop rugby (boys and girls) at Perins and in the local community (Alresford Rugby Club) since leaving. Rosie has qualified as an RFU Level 1 coach and as an RFU Level 1 referee to enhance her expertise and add to the support she is able to offer.

The Alresford RFC minis section (Sunday mornings) was established last year and Rosie’s expertise, commitment and excellent manner with children has been an important contributor to the section expanding to a phenomenal 70+ in 12 months. So impressive have her sessions with the minis been that she is regularly asked to take training for the men’s 1st XV on Tuesday evenings.

Rosie helps at Perins on Thursdays (Y7s), Fridays after school (girls) and Saturday mornings (Y7s). Her support with coaching and refereeing has had a significant impact on the quality of training and quantity of games available to teams, and the impact of her commitment is that a record number of year 7 boys (50) and girls (40) from all years have been regularly involved in rugby.

Rosie’s humour and expertise make her incredibly popular with all that are coached by her. She has impacted on the life of numerous people in the Alresford community.

Sun Hill Junior School’s motto is Success and Harmony and these special words are very important to us because they guide everything that we do. Last summer, we worked with a local artist, Lynne Waylen, to design a mural that represented success and harmony. Every child in the school contributed to the design and created a piece of the clay work that went to make up the final mural.

We do hope that you will enjoy hearing about our fabulous school over the next few months!

We hope to introduce you to all the exciting news and

events happening in our school. The column will be written by enthusiastic journalists who are experienced at writing news articles for the school newspaper.

Every half term, Sun Hill Junior School produces a newspaper which is called The Sunny Times. We have a team of Year 6 journalists responsible for reporting on different areas of school life and for informing the school community about upcoming events.

Our next event is the amazing Year 4 production about Ancient Egypt, entitled A Glint of Gold and the next edition of the newspaper will feature an article about the Year 5 visit to West Tisted Manor Farm. This is an exciting opportunity to

SUn LAnE FootpAtHWork should have been completed on the pedestrian improvements to Sun Lane Bridge by the time you read this. Some confusion arose regarding the parking bay on the Nursery Road side of the bridge. This was not a fundamental part of the project but it was understood that a current Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) stipulated that there should not be parking bays at this location and it was therefore proposed to remove the bay. It turned out that there was not an existing TRO and so the work has been completed without the removal of the parking bay. However, WCC may well initiate a consultation process regarding the removal of the bay in the future.

StREEt LIGHtInG

The Street Lighting project is now nearing completion and as a result Hampshire County Council will be taking over all but four of the remaining street lights in Alresford, previously the responsibility of the Town Council. As well as significantly reducing our annual expenditure these lights will now be taken into HCC’s ongoing improvement program, avoiding capital expenditure by the Town.

pARkInG Discussions are well advanced with Winchester City Council (WCC) to provide a full-time traffic warden (Civil Enforcement Officer) to manage parking in Alresford. Hopefully, from the beginning of April this will give the town a dedicated CEO which should improve parking availability, particularly in the town centre.

pLAy EqUIpMEntNew play equipment has been installed in both Arlebury Park and Sun Hill Recreation Grounds. After consultation with residents it became clear that there was insufficient toddler equipment in the play grounds. Arlebury Park now has a long boat and a toddlers’ activity circle comprising of stepping stones, zig zag beams and a wobbly slatted bridge. At Sun Hill there is now a wooden train and carriage together with a net-wall. The new equipment for Stratton Bates will be installed once the area dedicated to play equipment has been enlarged, which is planned for April this year.

Issue 52 MARCH www.alresfordforum.co.uk

Now in its 8th year, the watercress Festival has three very simple aims: to promote Alresford and its wealth of independent businesses and local food producers to a wider audience, to raise

awareness of watercress and its properties and to provide a fantastic event for Alresford and the wider community to enjoy.

‘Local community’ is at the very heart of this non-commercial festival. “those organising the festival are all local residents, local business men and women, local groups and local public figures who give their time voluntarily to help plan and run it, and to ensure that it remains a community-focused event,” says the festival’s Chairman John Cattle, “and we are proud to provide a fun event which is for the benefit of the whole town.”

the Festival’s principal sponsor is the watercress Alliance, formed from the Uk’s three leading watercress companies; Vitacress, Alresford Salads and the watercress Company. Additional sponsorship, programme advertising, trade stand fees and car parking fees all allow the watercress Festival to be self funding on a not-for-profit basis. Local groups help significantly on the day with marshalling car-parks, marshalling the event, setting up and clearing down.

Alresford WAtercressf est I VAl 2011

with every town now trying to stage its own festival to boost its economy, the watercress Festival is not only well established and well attended, its unique theme of watercress makes it stand out from the crowd. with 15,000 programmes distributed in the two months before the big day itself, a national pR campaign run by the watercress Alliance and the marketing support of the Mid Hants Railway and Hampshire Farmers Markets, the watercress Festival now proudly attracts 12,000 visitors to the Alresford streets.

with a huge food and drink market including 50 Hampshire Farmers’ Market traders, a craft market, children’s activity area and petting farm, celebrity cookery demonstrations, watercress farm tours, the watercress Cavalcade procession through the town and performances throughout the day from musicians, Morris Men and local children, it’s a great FREE day out for everyone!

If you would like to know more about the watercress Festival or volunteer your time to get involved with this fantastic community event please visit:www.watercressfestival.org or email [email protected]

You have your own needs and desires. That is why Three·Six·Five Hair Designers listen to what you say. They know the difference

between ordinary hairdressing and personal designing.

ImportantIf you make a mistake with clothes or make-up you can,

in many cases, take them back or at worse leave them in a drawer. Your hair is a very important part of your

appearance. It is ‘the gown you never take off’. So often ‘it is your mood-maker’. Yet getting what you want can be so frustrating.

Three·Six·Five TogethernessWe care about the way your hair looks between visits to the salon.

Three·Six·Five Hairdressers are specially trained. They use a ‘Five-Step’ recipe to make sure the successful balance of ingredients is right for each client. They know the value of asking the right questions and looking at all the key elements of a hair design which will work for you every day.

SpecialThey have a special service for new clients. If you

have always wanted to meet a top hairdresser to whom you could say ‘What would you do for me?’ now you have. Just ask for the Three·Six·Five Recipe service: like you ‘it’s a little special’. So friendly.

Butterfly Conservation is running a half price offer on their website

during March for anyone wishing to buy gift membership for Mothering Sunday on 3 April. Obviously the gift membership can be purchased for other reasons too – like just introducing a friend or loved one to the joys of butterflies (and moths). Visit www.butterfly-conservation.org.

Membership of Butterfly Conservation helps to safeguard British butterflies and moths in many ways, from running nature reserves to undertaking research in to ways to help to stabilise butterfly populations. So if you have a Mum who loves butterflies here is a lasting present. Members receive a beautiful colour magazine three times a year and can participate in a variety of local events.

I do hope lots of you will come along to Magdalen Hill Down, Butterfly Conservation's local nature reserve, on Wednesday 20th April on a walk to see acres of cowslips and, given a sunny day, early spring butterflies like Green Hairstreak. Meet at 10.30am in the car park opposite Magdalen Hill cemetery on the B3404 Alresford Rd into Winchester. All welcome. Next walk Wednesday 4th May and each first Wednesday in the month up to and including 7th September. Meet as 20th April.

For details of other butterfly walks April onwards & information on butterflies in Hampshire visit www.hantsiow-butterflies.org.uk or contact Lynn Fomison on 01962 772251

Please complete one of our travel questionnaires straight away, available from the surgery or from our web site. APPOINTMENTSWe apologise that it has been difficult to book appointments over the last few weeks. Late December and January were exceptionally busy period and despite more appointments being available than ever before we have been under pressure. Over a two week period in the middle of January we saw 300 more patients than for the same period in January 2010. We hope that by the time you are reading this things will have returned to normal and we will be offering a responsive service as usual. If you have comments or suggestions you might like to attend our Patients Forum which meets regularly. Next meeting on Tuesday 10th May at 2.00pm.

IDENTIFICATION OF NEW PATIENTS AND TEMPORARY RESIDENTS The Department of Health have asked us to obtain identification from patients wishing to be seen at the surgery. This has been introduced to combat increasing levels of identity fraud and use of NHS services by people who are not entitled to do so. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. People over 16 wishing to register will be asked to provide photographic proof of identity (eg passport, drivers licence, ID card) and a document confirming their address (eg utility bill, tenancy agreement, mortgage document).

NEW PRACTICE NURSEWe are pleased to announce that Carol Bowerman will be joining the team in March. TRAVEL VACCINATIONSWhen booking your summer holidays please do think about whether any vaccinations may be necessary. It should be quite clear from the travel company web sites or through their agents if any are recommended. It may take three to six months to complete some courses of vaccination and they usually

should be spent in enhancing the facilities already existing in Enham for the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers.

In 1969 a veteran of that battle, a former major in the Royal Signals, the Rev’d. Leslie Pettifer was appointed priest to the adjacent parish of Knights Enham and it became his earnest desire to create a permanent memorial in Enham Alamein village, to his World War II comrades... the little church of St. George’s was the result. It is of modest proportions and appearance on the outside, but to enter it, is to enter into a shrine dedicated to a precise moment in our nation’s history. It is most tastefully furnished [the woodwork produced in the workshops of Enham by the comrades of the fallen] and every item has a story to tell. All around on the walls and in the stained glass of the windows are the shield badges of the units that fought in the battle, and every year on the Sunday nearest to the date of the battle [23rd October] there is held a service and memorial parade. The church has limited opening hours so for details it is best to contact the Andover Tourist Information Office [01264-324320], who can provide a contact number. The village also possesses two sets of wrought iron gates, which used to frame the entrance to the Alamein Club in Cairo.

Brian Beggs

Of course when one thinks of Egypt, perhaps what comes

immediately to mind are visions of the pyramids seemingly floating on an early morning desert mist, or the mighty Nile flowing serenely to the sea flecked with the dhows, their outstretched sails grasping for a gentle breeze. Alternatively, we might think of the great Suez Canal, opened in 1869... Did you know that today it is three times deeper than its original eight metres, and with its access channels has been extended from 102 miles to 120 miles in length? It was, of course the subject of the Suez Crisis of 1956 when for a very short while our country, with France and Israel went to war with the Republic of Egypt in a vain attempt to maintain our control of it.

However, it was during the Second World War [on 23rd October1942] that our Eighth Army won the victory in Egypt at El Alamein which was so crucial, and many can probably recall the words of Winston Churchill, who wrote ‘... it may almost be said before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat.’ This is where the link to Hampshire is discovered, for just to the north of Andover is the village that had its name changed from Enham to Enham Alamein... why? Because in gratitude for their deliverance from the German armies the citizens of Cairo and the Egyptian government sent £225,000 to our country, and it was decided that the money

Here's a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are) 1. When you say 'room' or 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ish. But we don't quibble if the areas are a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes us to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount rates is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tv's. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden' extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay (VAT is included).

and somebody has to lift the Pentland Javelins, after all.

Dickie Prosser (plot 12A) has a well appointed shed and as much of an open door policy as his antique hinges will allow. His home brewing skills are improving weekly, and his stout is coming along nicely. Very nicely indeed. He has achieved, through an unconventional palette of ingredients, a true winter warmer, with an ABV of something between twelve and sixteen percent, depending upon the measurement device employed and the acuity of his senses at the time of measurement. Jolly good stuff in either event. He is, whilst considering the joy an allotment can offer, however, the first of my acquaintance to institute a no smoking policy, but that is entirely understandable under the circumstances and taking into account his recent brush with a flammable situation brought about by the merest moment's inattention: what good fortune it has proved to be that he has a standpipe adjacent. The sautéed marrow was surprisingly tasty, though, for those of you with culinary intent.

And now, forgive me, I must attend to an outbreak of thistles before it becomes unmanageable.

FB

I see the local authority have nailed to our allotment tree a specification for sheds.

Thankfully, those already standing (in my own case, propped), are exempt from this arboreal precision engineering edict. Strange that the powers that be have had the time to give the matter such in-depth consideration, along, I also saw whilst sauntering through the cemetery, with what grave adornment is allowed now; although I do see the reason for not wanting old bits of plastic blowing about the remains of loved ones.

I think the point I was going to make was that there is a rhythm, a flow, a certain neglected glory to a shed which is in accord with the herbal abundance all about it. Nature does not sit well with the perpendicular style (aside from abhorring a vacuum) and I can think of nothing more pleasing than the sight of a robust collection of brambles contriving to save one's shed from complete collapse. Added insulation too, I daresay, for those chill days when one just has to get out of the house, for there is only so much of certain of one's relatives it is reasonable to be expected to tolerate, (well, all of them, actually)

of vitamins B6, C, manganese, and carotenes. Greens in the cabbage family also provide a very good source of fiber, iron, copper, and calcium. In addition, the greens are a very good source of vitamins B1, B2, and E. Greens in the cabbage family have almost three times as much calcium as phosphorus. That is a very beneficial ratio since high phosphorus consumption has been linked to osteoporosis. The high consumption reduces the utilization of calcium and promotes it's excretion. As members of the cabbage family, watercress, kale, collards, mustard greens, kohlrabi and turnip greens contain the same sort of anticancer properties.

Issue 52 MARCH www.alresfordforum.co.uk

At the end of the Christmas holidays whilst sorting through Star II’s school bag, in amongst the debris of misplaced Christmas cards, ‘Fun Camp’ form, and a slightly mangled chocolate tree decoration, I found it:

the ‘Bridge Building Project’ homework sheet to be handed in on January 14th. Use any medium you like, it cheerily suggested - painting, model, photograph... PowerPoint. My heart sank. Oh dear.

Yes, yes, I know I should have been a proper Mother and utilized our many nature rambles over the Yuletide holidays to take photos of all the local bridges, catalogue them chronologically, expound on their usage and then, as an aside, download numerous images of the ‘Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge’ with accompanying time frame video of its construction. But alas, no.

No sooner had Stars I & II thrown their festering school bags into the cupboard at the end of term than they promptly contracted the major lurgi of the season. Thus they spent a week playing who’s the best at impersonating a boiled sweet (red, damp and slightly sticky), lying on the sofa with DVDs numerous, while I administered Calpol and paracetamol ad nauseum. The last thing they wanted was to watch repeats of ‘Mega-Structures’ on Sky or listen to me extolling the virtues of the Golden Gate when they had so little span, attention or otherwise, of their own.

And so it was one January weekend, with the words “Oh my God I’ve forgotten his bridge project,” suspended in the air, that the Husband and Star II cycled off to the local ford, where, fortunately, there are three fine examples of bridges: wooden, foot; river, brick arched; and road, modern concrete. Excellent.

There then followed a quick trip into the local cathedral city, as not only had we run out of printer ink, but paper too. Then another hour was spent cajoling Star II into the ordeal of writing a few words about each bridge. Eventually it was done.

'Everyone’s making a model, Mum.''Err, sorry?''Of their bridges, Freddie’s dad has made a scale model of Tower Bridge out of matches. It’s got a battery so it opens and shuts - that’s SO cool! And Poppy’s dad is one of those arch-i-tec things and he’s made one out of recycled materials that he says will never need painting.'

Right, marvellous.

Mercifully I am the proud owner, thanks to the work in progress that is our new kitchen, of a cardboard mountain that currently sits in our conservatory. I came over all ‘Blue Peter’ and explained to Star II that we would be constructing an aerial view model of the ford encompassing the three bridges, ford, streams, road and surrounding water meadow!

“Out of cardboard?” Star II was unimpressed, announcing he’d help me later but now there were animal programmes on the telly. The combination of his look of mild incredulousness and the fact that it was to be handed in the following day furthered my resolve: I was on a mission to make a model to marvel at.

Without having resorted to the gin, as night fell, I’d finished.'What the hell is that meant to be then Sandra, love?'You know when you can feel your eyes narrow. 'It’s clearly the ford! Look, that’s the footbridge with the stream under and that’s the brick bridge...''It’s the wrong bond love, the bricks are laid like...''Well ANYWAY, that’s the river going under and on through the field, here’s the road with the dual carriage way bridge, and I even put a car on it!''Ummm, so what’s with the white stripes on the blue bit then?''That’s the sun glinting on the clear crystal water, obviously!''Right….Have you actually been to the ford recently, love?'

I remained unabashed. Reassured by the phrase ‘mixed media’ I carefully slid my cardboard, felt tip pen and overly abundant Sellotaped masterpiece into a Marks and Spencer bag for life – no Asda carrier for this baby, oh no!

Thursday 14th dawned. 'Can’t I just put this into my book bag Mum? Do I HAVE to carry it?' I was about to hyperventilate.'What!? No don’t, it will get squashed, it’s delicate!! Carry it carefully PLEASE!'

At this point it occurred to me that this was MY precious piece of homework; despite the fact that Star II had written a sentence about each bridge, he’d had no real input re the model, apart from asking, 'What is it?'

I concluded that I should have been courageous and inspired him to make the model, after all, this entire entire project was an opportunity to show off his artistic talents. Had I failed yet again? The model happily managed to have that home-spun childlike quality to it, more by fault than design, so I didn’t need to feel too ashamed. Or so I thought...

Having alighted from the car outside school, two observations became apparent: one, Star II is, much like his mother, too short for a ‘bag for life’, necessitating it being dragged along the ground, and two, my cardboard offering was woefully inadequate, for all around us huge bits of MDF were being hauled out of cars. Models of viaducts, suspension, cantilever, and road and rail bridges were carefully eased from boots and back seats by loving fathers.

I hurried Star II along, convincing him that he would be late. The last I saw, he was running across the playing field circling the bag for life around his head. Hey ho, such is life.

That night the bridge returned...in pieces and missing a car.

'Good day love?' I nervously inquired.'Yes, ok Mum.''Um ... so….. did your teacher like the model?''Yes, but she said it will be interesting to see what I can make on Bridge Building Day.''Bridge Building Day?''Yes, next Wednesday! You are coming aren’t you? PLEEASE.''Of course I will love.'

Suddenly I heard the voice of Mr Trussler, my art teacher in Year 4, saying 'Could have tried harder...'

For those who tried the Boxing Day and new years Day walks some of this will be familiar, this entire walk is on minor roads.

As usual there are two hostelries and five places for tea and buns depending on time and day. So ok, start in Alresford. park in perins car park and walk out of the back gate on Jacklyns Lane to the cross roads. Here turn left and walk up pound Hill, past the Fire Station, and keep walking straight until you reach the end of the Avenue.

you will need to cross the road here as the pavement runs out but continue going straight, under the old railway bridge and out of Alresford. Again the pavement will run out so cross the road (A31) again and walk up the hill until, yes you’ve guessed it, the pavement finishes. Cross the road again and take the road signed to the ‘Bush’ and ovington, walk round the bends and down the long steep hill. Along the bank of the river to your left there may be snowdrops out.Continue straight and you will come to the Bush a head of you, rest awhile here if you must! If not follow the road and it will take you up a slight incline into the village of ovington. take the next road right to Avington.

this road is narrow in parts and winds up hill and down for about 2 miles. there are lovely views over towards Itchen Abbas; beautiful houses dotted here and there, sheep, horses and cattle obviously but also, maybe, some Lamas.keep to the road and you will pass. Avington golf course on your left, just past here you will come to a little t – junction on a sharp bend, turn right.

If you tackled the ‘new years walk’ you’ll find this next section familiar. walk past the front of Avington park on your left and continue up and over the hump back bridge; remember the waterfall. Follow the road past the church and you’ll come to another t –junction, cross over the road to the ‘trout’. If you’re not pausing here, with the pub facing you, turn to your left and follow the pavement round past the village hall. Follow the bend round to the right, the road takes

you under the old railway bridge.

now you have a long stretch of roughly 3 miles, so walk up the hill and follow the road round to the right and just keep going, ignore the first road turning to your right. Again there are a couple of lovely houses along this road and open farm land all around you, just keep going until you come to the second road turning to your right. It does seem quite a way.

take this road to the right but pause here for a moment as it’s a lovely view down the hill. walk to the bottom of the hill and you will find the pretty thatched cottages of Abbotstone and a triangle of grass. Follow the road to the left keeping the cottages on your left, walk over the stream and up the hill. Another long stretch now, keep to the road for about 2 and a bit miles, again ignore the first road turning to your right.once past this first road right you will start to drop down hill past the salad growing farm and the watercress beds to your right.

Just past the cress beds and before the road crosses the stream, there is a little gravel drive on your right, turn down here and walk around the front of the white ‘Fulling Mill’ and yes look at the river here, why wouldn’t you ?

once over the bridge turn immediately left with the river on your left and follow the path to its end. Here there is a tar-Mac lane,’Ladywell Lane’ follow this until you meet the t-junction with ‘Mill Hill’, turn right and you will find yourself at the bottom of Broad Street back in Alresford.

walk up Broad Street, here you’ll have the choice of the ‘Courtyard tea Rooms’ or ‘Carocoli’ for tea and buns or turn right at the top of Broad Street and walk down west Street where either ‘Heidi’s’ , ‘Mange 2’ or ‘tiffin’s’ await you also.

At the bottom of west Street you’ll find the cross roads where you started, turn left and then first right into perins car park.

THIS ONE IS A BIT OF A MARCH! ROUGHLY 9 MILES OR SO, DON’T GET ANXIOUS ABOUT THE DISTANCE, JUST ENJOY.

Whenever you plan an excursion - be it shopping, the school run, to get a train, going to the cinema or, heaven help us, to the airport - it’s parking that is the major concern.

We don’t even ask ourselves ‘will we get parked?’ any more, safe in the knowledge that unless we leave at the crack of dawn, or add an unreasonable amount of time on to our journey, we won’t. Sharp intakes of breath are followed by the sage-like pronouncements of those in the know: “You’re leaving when? Well, you’ll never get parked.”

But we’re sensible, realising that if journeying beyond a ten mile radius (sometimes less) of Alresford, we will encounter major traffic and parking problems, so expeditions are tailored accordingly i.e. if it’s a bank holiday we don’t go at all, unless divorce is seriously being contemplated.

That’s the reality of the parking phenomenon, it irritates us beyond all measure but we accept it…until it comes to our own home town.

Now it is unrealistic to think that the government would wake up to the fact we are an island fast running out of space and that there are probably enough cars here to keep us all going for ever without importing any more. Of course there is immense revenue to be made from cars; the purchasing of new vehicles partly being sustained by our image-driven society. You are, apparently, what you drive: “I drive a BMW, therefore I am.” I drive an aged Renault therefore....I’m not.

IS ANXIETY CONCERNING PARKING TAKING OVER OUR L IVES I WONDER?

Understanding then, that there are ‘too many cars on the road’, why are we so surprised that we often can’t get parked in Alresford? How many times do we ‘pop into town’ to find ourselves driving up and down Broad Street and West Street in search of that elusive space whilst muttering about the injustice of it all. We could of course park at the Perins or Station car parks, but we haven’t time, besides why should we pay, we’ve lived here for years: parking for free is our right! How many of us have thought that? How many of us, in frustration, have parked on double yellows as we’re ‘only going to be a minute’. Give us an inch and we’ll take a mile: I confess to parking in East Street recently taking full advantage of the missing yellow lines, and have seriously contemplated double parking for the sake of a ‘Carocoli muffin to take out’.

Irrespective, in Alresford we are lucky to enjoy, proportionally, a large amount of gratis and permit-free parking, and in the centre of town many are lucky enough to have garages or are able to rent.

Theories abound regarding who is responsible for the alleged unavailability of parking; builders working in town, shop owners, people staying overnight or lingering over coffee? Perhaps though we should be grateful that parking is at a premium? OK, so it’s mildly inconvenient sometimes, but people flock here not only because they love the shops but because of the free parking in the centre of town, just as they do in Stockbridge, I imagine. ’Pay as you go’ or metered parking in Broad Street and West Street may well deter people from coming at all.

Whilst we have many shops catering for the luxury end of the market, we also have plenty that deal in necessities; you can buy virtually all you need here. Times are very hard for any business at present: in short, Alresford needs all the punters it can get if businesses are to survive.

Alresford is like any other place - to be assured of easy parking, arrive early. If not, be prepared to be patient and a parking space will be yours! And lets face it, Alresford is lovely to walk to if we’re able.

I’ll be doing that later....well, I couldn’t get parked this morning!

own charity. I have chosen a very specific part of Fight for Sight - The Tommy Salisbury Choroideremia Committee. Choroideremia is an inherited eye condition that causes progressive sight loss. Those with choroideremia tend to develop night blindness in their teens, which progresses to tunnel vision and blindness 20 to 30 years after the onset. There is currently no treatment for the condition and it affects a family I know.

Fight for Sight is funding research being carried out by Professor Miguel Seabra at Imperial College London investigating the use of gene therapy in treating choroideremia. This year they hope to start human trials - as they think they have found the gene responsible and have successfully treated a similar disorder.

Having started my training I realise that is worth doing a race before the biggy and so I am also running in the Reading Half Marathon for Clic Sargent. Every day 10 families are told their child has cancer. As the UK's leading children's cancer charity, CLIC Sargent is the only organisation to offer them all round care and support.

All my tips at work from the beginning of January onwards are being split between the two charities and I have set up a 'just giving' page if you would like to sponsor me to knacker my knees. You can find me at www.justgiving.com

Starting in their 40's, a new normally expensive hobby is taken up.

A Classic car or perhaps a motorbike is purchased (well - your mother always said they were dangerous - and your wife no longer has the will to fight it.) Or even worse - you trade in the wife for a younger model in the vain hope that it will transform you back to your youthful carefree old self!

I am having my crisis nice and early, with no desire for a Harley Davison (and the old man is wearing in nicely), so the aim is to be 'fit at 40' Normally, on about the third Sunday in April, I sit in bed with my mug of tea and switch the on the TV to watch the London marathon. The athletes and wheelchairs go first and I find myself shaking my head in disbelief at how fast they can get round - most of them showing no emotion whatsoever (especially in the men’s lead pack). The bit I really look forward to is the fun runners. It might sound silly but I actually get butterflies in my tummy just before they start - as if I am actually there with them. Every year for the past 3 years on the dot of midday I enter the online ballot. The first two attempts ended in the 'sorry you didn't get in' magazine. However, this year - 2 days after a friend had persuaded me to do the Breast Cancer 26.2 mile Moonwalk on the 14th of May 2011, my 'congratulations you have a place in the 2011 London Marathon' mag arrived.

The lovely thing about a ballot place is you can choose your

World Book Day - is marked in over 100 countries around

the globe. The origins of the day we now celebrate in the UK and Ireland come from Catalonia, where roses and books were given as gifts to loved ones on St. George’s Day – a tradition started over 90 years ago.

Visit your local library and let your children choose a few books. If you have not yet joined your local library it’s easy to do, just pop in, it’s free.

Books are so important for your child’s learning and development at all ages and there is nothing better than snuggling together whilst looking at a book.

You can also borrow books from Sunbeams Children’s Centre where we have a selection of different age appropriate picture and story books to choose from. Just pop in to see which book you would like to borrow.
