Thursday 1st DecemberChildline Carols by Candlelight ConcertChildLine, provided by the NSPCC, invites to you to join them for Carols by Candlelight, with Esther Rantzen CBE, NSPCC trustee and founder of ChildLine and other very special guests. The concert will bring together 80 children from eight local Winchester primary schools who will perform alongside 40 choristers from The Pilgrims School and 40 children from the Kings' School Choir. Orchestral music will be performed by Winchester Youth Concert Band. The evening's programme has been put together by music specialists from some of the schools involved together with Hampshire Music Service and will be a mix of choral,

We have enjoyed trugs of plums and Gages for pies and Gin. Fat yellow almond scented Quinces converted into golden Jelly, brown apple juice, the opportunity once again to try and acquire the taste for bletted Medlar (Mesipilus germanica) and in my mind the best flavour amongst our 35 varieties of apple, the Egremont Russett, rough and nutty with notes of pear as it ripens. By the time January arrives we will be happy to be inside, knee deep in repairs. Cleaning and painting the glasshouses back to their ice white backdrop and then sterilising the maternity unit and nursery areas. After scouring through every new seed catalogue during the holiday period, each a free and fascinating encyclopaedia of information, we mark and make our choices. And then wait like enthusiastic midwives...... expecting the arrival of our first seeds.

A single pristine Helleborus niger heralds the imminent

winter celebration as hewn firs sprout around every hearth. In our drive to have the garden tidy before the new year begins we are encouraged to cut down everything in the herbaceous borders by the first week in December with the exception of the grasses , which are often still performing well.

I prefer to get everything tidy early in a garden of this size when there are limitations on time and labour and also deadlines to meet. In a smaller garden one can enjoy more easily the low sun cutting across frost rimed stems and perhaps see, perched aloft, a charm of Goldfinch reaping the benefit.

November winds have brought down a million leaves, whirling, gliding and in the case of the Great London Plane, crashing over limbs, onto hedges and lawns and each leaf needs to be ushered, cornered or cajoled by rake eventually, into a barrow or trailer and stacked high. This year of course the weather has been something of a curate's egg with a long dry mild spring coming after a winter of record extremes, a summer of little heat, a dry mild October that spilled over into November and created in its confusion the curiosity of Lupins and Hemerocallis

Entrants will produce and serve a meal for two comprising either two or three courses, within a time limit of two and a half hours. The age limits are from 11 to 17. Once again the Firework display and bonfire defied the weather forecasts and about 3000 people enjoyed a family evening, held, as is traditional, on the 5th. Event Manager for Rotary, Clive Livingstone, was pleased with the support from the town and surrounding areas and although tests of wind direction meant the fireworks were set off in an adjacent field, the display was very well received. Many thanks to the Town Council for their help and advice – when the final bills are in, the club expects to have raised over £8000 for charity.

The Club’s next big event, apart from providing some crowd control to keep Santa from being mobbed when he arrives this year, will be the Grand Christmas Tree Sale at the top of Broad Street, on Saturday December 10th. The organisers have managed to hold the prices down, despite inflation, and details are on the club website. We hope this year to have some musical accompaniment during the morning. Most trees are sold before lunchtime – sale starts at 9am.

Over the years, Alresford Rotary has quietly been supporting the

young people of the town, with a variety of different projects and opportunities. One of the founder organisations behind Tonix, the club also runs youth exchange schemes where families “swop offspring” with an overseas family (for a while at least!). Regular and winning entries from Perins in the annual Youth Speaks competition have provided a platform for future debaters and maybe the next generation of leaders. Once again, the Perins pupils will be put through their paces at mock interviews, which the club will be running in December, preparing them for their next steps, whether on to further education, or into the world of work.

As well as the Young Photographer competition, announced last month and for which entries close on December 10th, applications are coming in from young people for Alresford Rotary’s “Young Chef” competition, which will be taking place on Saturday afternoons on 10th December 2011 and 28th January 2012. The competition is being run in conjunction with Alresford’s Cook Academy based at the Station Mill.

Rotary President Gary Ellis said “There are fabulous prizes for the winners of the national competition and at local level we are offering cash prizes. Everyone who enters will also get a certificate of achievement from Rotary. We are expecting a high standard from young people who love cooking and want to impress with their ability. We are delighted this year to be in partnership with Cook Academy who have quickly established a reputation in Alresford for demonstrating and teaching expert cooking skills. Of all the things...and of all people!

You would imagine that someone of importance and distinction would choose people of impeccable character to be in their employment. We have learnt from recent events in our nation's life that none of us

are beyond reproach.

What about God? What kind of people do we think He chooses to involve in His plans? What is 'our' idea of a 'God figure'-someone who is a 'God-person'- a Christian? What kind of person do we think God would want? When we read The Bible, we don’t have to look too far to see that some 'unlikely' people have been chosen by God; 'unlikely' that is in our eyes and as far as our understanding is concerned. But then, none of us is better than the next person, despite the opinion we may have of ourselves!Indeed The Bible says that ''we have all fallen short of the glory of God''- in other words we are imperfect. (Romans 3v23)

This is the whole point of Jesus coming into the world, to restore us to God, not by force, but as we freely admit our imperfections (sin) before Him, being far short of His glory, and that we need Him to come into our lives, to forgive us and give to us eternal life, through Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection.

So, who did God use in this unique event, when Jesus, the Son of God, came into the world? He used men who studied the stars! They knew that 'this one star' stood out! (read the Gospel of Matthew chapter 2). As they studied and followed it, it led them to the right place at the right time, where this newly born infant lay. This is the One who was (and is) to be King of Israel, King of all kings, and Lord of all lords, as recorded in the Gospels. Yet wonder of wonders, He loves us and wants us to follow Him now as our Saviour, while there is opportunity before He comes again.As the Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians at Corinth, making it

personal to them and to us: ''….Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures''. (1 Corinthians 15 v3&4)

METHOD Mix all the seasoning and herbs together and rub into the fish. Place the fish into the dish. Pour the beer, schnapps or gin over the fish and then cover with cling film. Once covered place the smaller dish on top and a few tins on to weigh it down.

Refrigerate and leave for twenty four hours, after this amount time has passed turn the fish over. Repeat the process and leave for another twenty four hours. At the end of the second twenty fours hours remove any left over marinade from the fillet. It is now ready.

To make the sauce blend the ingredients together.

Either serve in very thin slices starting from the tail side toward the head or cut in chunks. Serve alone or with a salad accompanied by the sauce.

It’s delicious on toast too. Keeps in the fridge for a week.

A side of salmon will serve up to 10 people. plus you can use a smaller fillet for 2 people, but reduce the proportions of the marinade.

• 60g coarse salt• 60g crystal sugar• 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper• Handful of finely chopped, fresh dill • ½ pt glass of bitter or a small glass of schnapps. Gin will do!

SAUCE• 200ml whipped cream,• 1 soupspoon strong mustard• 1 soupspoon finely chopped dill, salt & pepper.

EQUIPMENT:• Cling film• 1 rectangular dish for marinating the fish plus a smaller one to sit on top.

Since my last column I have visited the excellent (and now Academy) Perins School in Alresford and belatedly opened a new business in the town ‘Home Instead’ which is providing care services in the home for those who cannot get out as they used to. Steve and Jan Gapper are building something really successful here and I wish them all the luck in the world.

Finally, readers will know I worked extremely hard alongside local councillors of all parties this Summer to try and avert the damaging bus cuts affecting the town. My bus ‘summit’ meeting in September was attended by all the key players but we have sadly not been able to prevent the change, which once again to be clear, was a COMMERCIAL one taken by Stagecoach and not the fault of Hampshire County Council this time. We have secured agreement from the County to bring much needed improvements to the Cango Service (which is not good enough right now) and I will continue to drive that on. I would urge all councillors (of all parties, at all levels) to continue to work with me on this one, to stick to the facts and resist the temptation to use the extreme inconvenience Stagecoach have caused local people for short-term party political advantage.

As parents submit their choices for primary schools, the County Council is trying to sort out where they will all go. Last year about 20% more children applied than expected in Winchester, despite a national downturn in numbers. For me, the priority is to ensure that there is a place at the school within the community that the child lives, and that the quality of education there is good.

Exciting news! The Olympic torch is coming to the Itchen Valley area on July 11th! The torch will travel from Basingstoke to Winchester through Kings Worthy: but the exact route won’t be confirmed until nearer the day.

Christmas may be coming but there's much to do before 2011 draws to

a close. Parliament sits right up until a few days before the big man slips down the chimney but I suspect festive cheer will be in short supply along the corridors of power as our economy ends the year in a still fragile state. The road back to growth is going to be long and difficult and I am of course very aware the rising cost of living is squeezing incomes hard for all of us right now.

Locally, I have never been busier and I am reflecting on a year of hard work and battles fought. The year began for me with a new baby in the house and snow on the ground. It was good to turn the page with an address to Winchester’s business community early in January and quite an experience to be grilled by CALA’s QC at the Barton Farm enquiry!

In the spring I was (literally) blown away on court by Greg Rusedski as he came to open the new courts at Winchester’s tennis club and we said goodbye to Bishop Michael after many years service. It was also very lively as I did my bit for the local election campaign and to successfully reject a quite unnecessary change to the voting system. Winchester voted 2-1 in favour of the current first-past-the-post method of electing MPs.

Through the summer I visited dozens of local fetes, organisations and businesses and I held my first Summer Tour which was a great success and will definitely be repeated in 2012. It was humbling to start Winchester’s Race for Life and, in spite of the torrential rain, we raised thousands to fight cancer in this country.

After the County Council and Stagecoach negotiated a whole new deal for bus services in October, we have learnt that these services are only confirmed until June next year. New tender documents went out in November and we await the responses from bus companies. Hopefully, our pleas to reduce long gaps in services will be heeded, and we County Councillors in the Winchester area are pressing for a night bus too.

The County has proposed a series of cuts in smaller libraries. Nearly 100 Alresford Library users who returned the consultation form didn’t like the idea of closing at 5pm on Fridays, and suggested an alternative. As a result, the County have now changed their plans and the suggestion to open from 10am is now out for consultation again. I am pleased that for once,

Sunday was open top bus tour day! £80! later we were treated to a very comprehensive drive around, well, you name it we saw it. All except for Star I who became a proper teenager and proceeded to text for the duration.

Star I, it would appear, is at the age when parents can be an irritation and friends are all. If technologies had been available to us at that age then we would have been permanently engrossed in the touch screen too no doubt. However the Mary Poppins bit in me wanted to say, “For goodness sake put that phone away! Spit spot!! Look around you, you’re missing EVERYTHING!!

Still on Monday both the London Dungeon and the Tower of London focused the mind; torture it would seem is preferable to texting. Must remember that.

On Tuesday in the Science Museum Star II found his utopian ideal, every piston, drive wheel and thingy, (sorry I’m a girl), of the miniature engines could be operated by the mere push of a button, heaven. After nearly two hours The Husband and Star I were to be found slumped on a bench in the corner; Star I is STILL texting!

A quick trip to the V&A and then a brisk walk to Harrods, as I wanted to show them the delights of the food hall and toy department. It was here that Star II came alive, but not in the way I expected. To find the toys, one finds oneself wending a wiry way through ‘Children’s Clothes’; here Star I paused and picked up a tiny leather jacket for a two year old.

He was having none of it; by the time we’d looked at Stieff bears and a full size £800, gorilla he was ready to lynch someone. “This is obscene! Lets just go”

I’ve never counselled someone about capitalism and the morals of money whilst descending the Egyptian escalator before. A meal at the Rib Shack calmed him.

And so it was on Wednesday that the Pagan experience of living in the Capital came to an end; having broadened the horizons of Stars I and II, and emptied our wallets in the process I concluded it was well worth it!

October Half Term and we Pagans sojourn to the Big Smoke for five days. I was stressed, “I really hope they enjoy this trip”. “Of course they will Sandra love, I mean what could go wrong…”

Fortunately both Stars II & I had an Inset Day on the Friday before Half Term, so with limited luggage we found ourselves bound for Waterloo. Then, not two hours, later gazing out over the Tate Modern and beyond to the Gherkin from the sanctuary of our modern apartment.

First stop was Borough Market where French tarts, of the chocolate variety (Southwark is a nice area now), were purchased along with fruit and veg should I get the urge to cook that evening. No, instead hot- footed to a Pizza Express to meet with friends and enjoy the best view of St.Pauls.

Now I had a loose itinerary in place; it was Saturday so it was the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, lovely. Star II had other ideas, ”Can we walk across that wobbly bridge?” We were already running late and that route would take us in the wrong direction, I took a red pen to the itinerary,“Yes good idea, let's get going then. Come on, come on!”“Calm down Sandra love, keep your hair on!”

Once over the Millennium Bridge and into The City, Star II spied a sweet shop Harry Potter would have been proud of so in we went. Much like the passing of time we marched swiftly on and eventually arrived in the Mall, along with a thousand others who had grabbed the best vantage points. The police halted the traffic, right in front of us, and the mass band of whatever regiment it was marched by the crowds on the opposite side of the road, marvelous. Undaunted I suggested we stayed on as there was bound to be more and sure enough there were...about an hour and half later. The Pagan family sulk was rewarded by the Horse Guards, the band of the Guards and that of the Royal Air Force; stirring stuff.

“ Can we go now?” came the resounding cry.

Next stop, via Piccadilly, was Regents Street and the horror that is Hamleys. Five storeys of toy fest hell. To avoid a major strop from The Husband and Star I it was suggested they go in search of Abercrombie and Fitch, like that would help, while Star II looked for the perfect purchase with me. Fortunately three floors were rejected on the grounds that they were “for babies”, “boring”, or just “too pink”. Remote control cars and Air Fix was the place for us and indeed remained so for an hour until, after the purchase of a car and two Frisbees, we found ourselves once more amongst the throng outside.

Several texts later ‘gently’ enquiring as to our whereabouts, we were reunited and decided to go back to the apartment; well X-Factor was on the telly!

The Hampshire Artists’ C o - o p e r a t i v e ’ s Christmas Exhibition will

be featuring two guest artists, painter Anne Lewenhaupt and 3D artist Mike Topham.

Anne says “I love the rhythm of a painting and the accidents and discoveries that can occur. My hopes are that the viewer will get something from my work, some mystery and something new to explore which will resonate beyond the confines of the frame.”

Mike’s wire pictures are based on simple and humorous things in everyday life and are often inspired by a phrase, saying or childhood memory. Each picture is individually made in various gauges of copper wire which are positioned and soldered before cleaning and finally painting and mounting.

The Gallery will also be taking part in the ‘Christmas in Selborne’ evening on Saturday 3rd December 5 – 9 pm. The High Street will be packed with local attractions and local traders will be supplying festive food and drink and presents to inspire everyone.

WEST STREET PROJECTDespite appearances the project to improve West Street is not dead. There have been some delays whilst consideration is given to making changes to ease the problems associated with pedestrians crossing West Street. Also the plans are being upgraded to incorporate changes to The Dean/Jacklyns Lane junction to improve both pedestrian and traffic safety. It has also been suggested that some improvements be made for pedestrian safety at the top of Broad Street.

It is now accepted that, for financial reasons, it will not be able to complete the project in one go. However, both the City and County Councils have agreed in principle that the overall plan should be developed and agreed. Any work will then be undertaken in accordance with that plan as and when finance is available.

Once the provisional plans have been completed they will be put on display for comment.

ALRESFORD LIBRARYThe County Council is proposing that the Library opening hours should be reduced by 2 hours a week. The current proposal is to close at 5pm on a Friday, rather than 7pm.

Many people who cannot get to the library during their normal working week avail themselves of the 5 – 7 slot and it may be more convenient to users if the opening was delayed by 30 - 60 minutes on two or more mornings – Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday.

The New Alresford Town Trust (NATT) is an independent Charity,

which was created in 1890. It is run and operated by Trustees.

As a Charity it is totally reliant on volunteers and grants/donations from individuals, local organisations and Councils. NATT activities – i.e. Eel House, Community Minibus, The Avenue – benefit from this help, and indeed NATT could not operate successfully without it.

RETIREMENT OF LEN ORTON AND TWO LONG SERVING MINIBUS DRIVERS. Len Orton who had been a Trustee for eight years and Co-Chair for four announced his retirement in last May. At a recent meeting he was thanked by all for his long and dedicated service and the Trustees presented him with an engraved goblet. Len was very involved in the rebuilding of the Trust activities after the resignation of all the co-opted Trustees in October 2005, including stabilising the Trust’s financial position and expanding the Thursday Market with six Sunday and three Continental markets each year in addition.

The Trust had to say farewell to two voluntary Minibus drivers on reaching the age of 75, which is the cut off age from our insurance company.

David Rice-Smith had driven the Minibus for 14 years and Brian Gabriel had completed 10 years. Pam Stevens presented them both with a Certificate of Long Service and also they received M&S vouchers. Pam also thanked them for their dedication to the Trust, and said the two drivers had been a very important part of the Minibus in providing this service to the elderly and disabled residents of the town and surrounding district.

VACANCY FOR A TRUSTEE. The New Alresford Town Trust has a vacancy for the appointment of a Co-opted Trustee. Anyone interested should set out their details and also provide a resumé detailing how they can benefit the Trust The person appointed should be fully committed to assisting with the Trust’s activities.

however small, will be greatly appreciated. The Minibus is a lifeline to a lot of elderly and disabled people, especially with the 64 bus service being taken out of use. We do a regular Friday morning shopping trip into Alresford at a very reasonable cost; you are collected from your home and then delivered back there by our volunteer drivers, who are only too pleased to help carry your shopping to your front door. It is not too late to make a donation, especially if you think this is a worthwhile cause, and wish to help keep the Minibus on the road to serve the community.

Obviously donations are necessary to keep this facility on the road, and at the same time we must use it to its full capacity. If anyone wants to make use of this Community Minibus, just telephone Pam Stevens on 01962 734861 and she will give you any information you require. The Minibus also goes to Winchester, Alton and Petersfield on certain days, and if anyone wishes to know more about these trips, Pam will be only too happy to help you. When the Minibus Appeal closes, which as I see it at the moment will not be until early 2012, I intend to list all donors who have so generously contributed to this.

THE AVENUERoy Gentry (Trustee responsible for The Avenue) has arranged for (a) low barriers being erected alongside the entrance to Arlebury Recreation Centre and (b) at the “Triangle” at the entrance of Arlebury Park House to keep The Avenue free of parked cars. The cost to NATT of £723 has been

subsidised by Wednesday Conservation Volunteers who did 2 full days work with 10 volunteers and charged £65., and Prospect Fencing who provided the materials at discounted prices.

NATT are also pleased to announce that the Town Council will be paying for the grass cutting (approx £800 per annum) and the Tree survey carried out every 4 years (approx £500 per survey). Thank you NATC.

SUNDAY MARKET 11TH DECEMBERPam Stevens (Trustee responsible for the Markets) has arranged a Sunday Christmas Market on the 11th December in Broad Street, and hopes you will all support this. Broad Street will be decorated with its Christmas trees on all shops, and the large tree will again be erected in front of Tesco Express. There will be a selection of stalls to support, and you may also find those last minute presents you need to buy.

Pam also hopes you will support the regular Thursday Market, which is held in Broad Street and and provides a good selection of fruit and vegetables at very reasonable prices, and the quality is excellent. There is also a fishmonger, olive stall, cake stall, flower stall and various other stalls, including basketware.

To help this market succeed it needs customers. Please give them your support and see for yourself.

the road in their way. Well I’m not (that) old and I pay my road tax, so tough.

You see bumper huggers everywhere: on the motorway, in village lanes. They are no respecters of class nor creed. Their cars likewise, range from hot hatches with exhausts so big you could stuff a coconut up them (yes I have been tempted), through to reps’ saloons, 4WD and all the up-market varieties. Talking of which, the only time I will tolerate bumper hugging and slow to a snail’s pace to watch them glide by is if the car behind is an Audi. Well, I need a bit of wish fulfillment in my life - but even that can prove irritating if the driver turns out to be young, female and blonde! Is there no justice?

The truth may be that I’m turning into a grumpy old woman or that I have become obsessed with bumper huggers, but the fact remains that on every journey I take, they appear and adhere.

Is it simply a question of bad driving - or more to do with impatience born out of the pace of life?

I mean, is it just me? I shall soon be purchasing one of those rear window stickers that says something along the lines of, ‘You’re driving so close I can only assume you feel a degree of intimacy towards me, but shouldn’t we at

least talk and have dinner first?’

What is it with these people? Take the Mini that glued itself to my bumper the other night on my way back from Itchen Abbas. Now the last time I looked, the speed restriction from there to Alresford alternates between 30 and 40 mph. It’s not my fault, I didn’t invent the law and, I have to say, that 30 can be a tedious speed at which to drive at times, but that’s not the point; speed restrictions are there for a reason.

The person driving behind would have been straight into the back seat if I had needed to brake suddenly. What were they hoping to achieve by driving so close - make me go faster? Well sorry, it makes me want to slow down, but worse still it makes me really aggressive; I really wanted to stop the car in the road, get out and have a go! ‘Just what speed would you like me to do in a 30 mph limit? 40? 50?’ That’s what I wanted to scream at them à la Basil Fawlty whilst brandishing a tree branch with which to beat their car.

I suppose it’s my fault. I have an old car, therefore, they assume, it is driven by an elderly person who shouldn’t be on

Welcome to Sun Hill Junior School’s column. Over the last

term we have been focussing hard on our learning and building upon the successful start to the new academic year.

Having started out the term with new teachers and classes,

Sun Hill Junior School Newsfun lessons. She has made lots of friends and she loves her P.E and Art. She feels she ‘has become a successful , sunny Year 3’. With this type of reaction we all cannot wait to see the Year 3 production which this year is called Stargazers. The children will be singing, dancing, and acting their hearts out as they delight the school and their parents at the end of term

Year 5 ended their first topic with an exhibition of work from their African theme. The children showed off all their art work, story writing, dance and music. When asked

Two students from Perins have won a competition, run by Genes Reunited

and endorsed by the Historical Association, to make a war memorial. As the centenary of the outbreak of WW1 approached, the pupils’ task was to create a war memorial honouring those who gave their lives in the Great War from their local area. The competition gave the pupils the chance to delve into their communities and research their local history. Using information from local war memorials, followed up by research on the Genes Reunited website, pupils were invited to create their own 21st century memorial to the men and women from their district that died in the 1914-1918 conflict.

Three gifted and talented history students, two history leaders and two ICT leaders were entered into the competition. Pupils

were encouraged to enter either as individuals or as groups and their entries were judged on their ‘originality, quality and appropriateness’. The winning entry “Silent Night Memorial,” designed and created by Chantelle Burns (14) and Kyle Lafferty (14) was described as, “An absolutely outstanding memorial consisting of a stone coloured base and white cross (to represent peace). The

cross contains a digital screen showing poems and pictures accompanied by specially chosen soundtracks. The digital screen contains images of WW1 whilst the silhouette of the modern day soldier represents those still fighting for us today.”

Miss Lynwen Thomas, head of history said, “Chantelle and Kyle are both year 10 students who are also ICT leaders. They were totally committed to the competition from the start and within a day of being entered they had already drafted out a detailed plan for their memorial. The cross was a traditional design with some really new and innovative features, such as the digital photo frame and the sound, and this is what fulfilled all the expectations of the Genes Reunited judges. Although the time scale was very tight with only 2 school weeks to complete the project, they worked tirelessly after

school every evening, with the help and support of Denby Johnson the DT technician. As well as constructing the memorial, there was also a huge amount of work which went into their research, explanations and poetry, which were all featured on the digital photo frame. The history department is immensely proud of the achievement of these two students and the memorial is now on loan to the local church – St Johns in Alresford to display over the remembrance weekend”.

On Remembrance Day a special assembly was held to remember all those killed and injured in the wars. Representatives of Genes Reunited presented Chantelle and Kyle with a cheque for £500 for the school. Kyle Lafferty said, “I was absolutely thrilled that we won and really didn’t expect it. We put in a lot of time and effort so it was wonderful to win.”

how the Kangas were made, pupils told us that they “had to make a pattern on a “nine square piece of paper” and were given two squares each; we had to get two of our best designs and then draw it on a bit of polystyrene, after that we painted it and then imprinted our designs on to our pillow-cases!” We think all the designs look great and Year 5 looked like they really enjoyed making them.

Another outing was to Newbury Races in March. 10 students from Woodlands Education Centre, Havant, participated in a Race Experience Day at Newbury Racecourse as a result of a partnership that has been implemented between the British Horseracing Authority and The Prince’s Trust. The aim of the day was to give the students an overview of the racing industry, including the range of jobs and careers that exist within the sport as well as a celebration for successfully completing 1 or 2 years within the XL club

To continue with these activities, the Prince’s Trust needs to raise almost £1 million a week across the UK to continue its vital work. With this is mind, Prince’s Trust volunteers Yinnon Ezra MBE and John Morton are calling for volunteers to join The Prince’s Trust Hampshire and Isle of Wight Development Committee in order to raise funds for the youth charity.

Yinnon said: “Due to high levels of youth unemployment, too many of our young people are not getting the chance to realise their potential. The new Hampshire and Isle of Wight Development Committee is a chance for us to make a difference to the lives of many more young people in the county.”

The Prince’s Trust helps change young lives here in Hampshire by giving disadvantaged young people the skills and confidence they need to turn their lives around. It works with 13-to 30-year-olds who have struggled at

school, have been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law, and more than three in four young people helped by The Prince’s Trust move into work or training.

Local organisations including Hampshire County Council have been hugely supportive by providing funding and “help in kind” for the Prince’s Trust in the past. The trust is grateful for the support of Southampton Football Club and Hampshire Fire and Rescue, which delivers The Prince’s Trust’s 12-week personal development course, and is vital to the work of The Prince’s Trust in the county.

Having recently joined forces with youth charity Fairbridge, which has a centre in Southampton, the Trust is now able to help change the lives of more young people here than ever before. Recent activities included 7 young people from Frogmore Community College XL

club enjoying a residential weekend at the Hampshire Mountain Centre in Brecon Beacons at the foot of Pen y van. Amongst the activities they participated in were canoeing, mountain walking, camp craft and outdoor cookery. The group did a whole day’s canoeing on the river Wye and then they climbed to the top of Tumper, where the group enjoyed watching the sunset. The residential element was part of the team building module; the third they’d completed this year.
