I recall tuning in daily to Hawaii morning radio in 1973 to hear about the fabulous hullabaloo surrounding Elvis Presley’s concert in Hawaii. He had lost 25 pounds for Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii, to be seen live by satellite in more than 40 countries.

However, at that time, live concerts were not on my real-world wish list. I was attending college full-time while working a heavy and intricate schedule of part-time jobs. One of the jobs, as a weekday morning news assistant in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin’s State Capitol bureau, would lead to a news career. From that news vantage point, here’s the 1973 I remember:

• GovernorBurnswasfightingcancer andLieutenantGovernorGeorge AriyoshitookoverastheState’sacting chiefexecutive.

This month, I’ll see the concert phenomenon that I missed out on in 1973, less than five years before Elvis’ unexpected passing at age 42. Concert promoter Tom Moffatt and I will co-host a 40th anniversary airing on PBS Hawaii at 7:00 pm on Sunday, August 11. Please join us as Tom and other Islanders share memories of this landmark satellite-live event.

ovely Kwock of Makiki remembers the night she made history with Elvis. “I bought this pink, plastic plumeria lei,” Kwock recalls. “I came to the stage, reached up and gave him the

lei, and he put it around his neck.” Search the Internet for photos from that concert in 1973, and you’ll find Elvis wearing several lei, including Kwock’s pink plumeria which she gave to him from the front row (top photo at right). That January 14 performance also made history as the first concert by a solo artist to be internationally broadcast live via satellite. Forty years later, PBS Hawaii viewers can relive that historic night with Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii. The 90-minute concert special airs Sunday, August 11 at 7:00 pm. President and CEO Leslie Wilcox and legendary concert promoter Tom Moffatt will co-host this fundraising event for PBS Hawaii programming. UH Manoa sorority Beta Beta Gamma will volunteer on the phone bank, while sporting the era’s fashion.

Live satellite broadcasts are common today, but in 1973, it was a first. The concert was beamed live to over 20 countries, and eventu-ally aired in about 40 countries across Europe, Asia and later shown in an edited form in the U.S. Director Marty Pasetta also deployed live split-screen effects –another innovation at the time. “It was an exciting time in television,” says Jim “J.R.” Rothschild, a former camera operator at KGMB. The local CBS affiliate worked alongside an NBC TV crew from the U.S. mainland for the televised event. continued on page 6 >>

The 1973 performance was a benefit for a cancer fund named after Hawaii entertainer Kui Lee, who died in 1966 of lymph gland cancer at age 34. “Everybody could afford to go to it,” remembers concert goer Dennis Wong of Honolulu.

“You could give whatever you wanted to donate.” Wong says he donated $100 for each of his two tickets. In total, the concert raised about $75,000 for the fund. For Lovely Kwock, Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii is a gift itself. Call it coincidence or call it fate, the special will air on her 75th birthday. Look for Kwock handing her lei to Elvis approxinmately eight minutes into the concert special. “Elvis was the king of rock and roll,” Kwock says. “There’s only one king.”

“I never dreamed that I would be at a concert of Elvis Presley’s – let alone being able to meet him.”- Brad Powell of Aina Haina

“Until I saw Elvis and what he did, I didn’t believe the hype that he was the king of rock and roll. After that concert, he was indeed the king of rock and roll.”- Gregg Ambrosius, former KGMB crew member

“Elvis was such a polished performer. It was magical just watching him.”- Joyce Powell of Aina Haina

“After the concert, I had great respect for Elvis. He was true to his audience, true to the music and he loved the band.”- Gabe Baltazar, support musician, legendary Hawaii Jazz musician

In a new Long Story Short, Leslie Wilcox talks with Hedda Sharapan, Director of Early Childhood Initiatives at The Fred Rogers Company. Sharapan, a Pittsburgh native and granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor, worked closely with Fred Rogers on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

After applying to graduate school, Sharapan sought advice from Rogers, who advised her to pursue a master’s degree in child development.

“What he was saying to me is, ‘The important thing is not so much what can we give children,’” Sharapan told Wilcox. “‘The questionis, what are they bringing to us?’”

That philosophy has guided Sharapan for almost 50 years. In her current role at The Fred Rogers Company, Sharapan observes how children learn and helps incorporate curriculum and life lessons into the company’s produc-tions. Its latest show, Peg + Cat, presents fun, real-world math and problem solving situ-ations for children ages five through eight. Peg + Cat premieres this October on PBS Hawaii.

It didn’t take Sharapan long to find the STEAM curriculum - science, technology, engineering, the arts and math - in Rogers’ lessons about appreciating the world.

“One of the things that Fred often said was, ‘Our questions are more important than our answers.’ And if we can, listen to children’s questions, honor them, validate them.”

Maui Teachers Workshop In July,PBS Hawaii held a two-day intensive, hands-on production workshop for Maui’s HIKIN-O teachers. Led by Learning Initiatives Executive Producer Robert Pennybacker, HIKI N -O Online Editor/Associate Producer Lawrence Pacheco, and HIKI N -O Managing Editor Sue Yim, the workshop was hosted by teacher Jennifer Suzuki in her Maui Waena Intermediate media classroom. Sixteen Maui teachers honed their writing, shooting and editing skills through a series of presentations and exercises. On Day One, guest-presenter Christi Young Tomisato (former Assistant News Director for Hawaii News Now) led an interactive session on story development and brainstorming. Lawrence Pacheco went over HIKI N -O production standards and Sue Yim did the same for journalistic standards. Later in the day, teams of teachers shot and edited action sequences, which were then critiqued. Day Two immersed teachers in the production process. The teams shot, wrote and edited interview-based stories, which were then screened and analyzed. A great deal of learning took place, and one “aha” moment at the end of the second day summed up the experience. After watching her team’s story, Hana K-12 teacher Ramona Moeai remarked, “Since the beginning of HIKI N -O I never understood what shooting a sequence was all about. I just didn’t get it, until today, because today I had to shoot our sequence and make it work for our editor. By being forced to do it, I finally figured it out for myself.” A perfect example of learning by doing.
