Senate Nominating Committee. Prof.F. Gerard Adams was selected as the ninth member from among the SEC membership. (See full committee membership, page 4.) 2. Policy on Misconduct in Research. Amendments were adopted in the policy dated October 23, 1989,so that it reads as follows (new language underlined): p.2, par. 8, line 6: "The making of knowingly false or malicious accusations violates acceptable norms of behav- ior for members of the University community, and may result informal charges being brought against the com- plainant under University procedures." p.4, par. 1.4, line 16: "In the event that the dean and Provost determine to drop the matter, they shall use diligent efforts, as appropriate, to restore the reputation of the respondent and to protect the position and reputation of the complainant, if the complaint is found to have been made in goodfaith." p.6,par. 3.1, line 5: "The dean and the Provost have the responsibility to take an active role to repair any damage done to the reputation of the respondent, and totake appro- priate action should they determine that the accusation was knowingly false." 3. Campus Center. Prof. Stephen Gale and VPUL Kim Morrisson presented results of the recent survey on the community's preferences for facilities, services, and pro- grams that should be in the new center and asked for the faculty's suggestions. SEC raised concerns that included the need to replace the parking that would be lost by con- struction of thecenter; support for moving of the Bookstore to a larger, better stocked location; adequate storage space; as well as the need for routine faculty review beyond this program stage when the drawings are with the architect and the center is under construction. 4 . Diversity Education Program . VPUL Kim Morrisson described the program activities and gave a preliminary review of the questionnaire results from program facilita- tors. While analysis has just begun, Dr. Mon-isson felt the program had a positive result. Among issues raised by SEC members was the need to use accurate information and the suggestion to change the name to "community building." As the meeting had run beyond the announced adjournment time, discussion of an expression ofthanks was carried over to the next SEC meeting. Eckman Professor: Dr. Mark Greene The first holder of a new endowed professorship of medicine, established by the Rorer Group Inc. in honor of its longtime executive board chairman, is Dr. Mark I. Greene, a Canadian-born M.D.-Ph.D. who joined Penn Med in 1986 as professor of pathology and director of the division of immunology. Since 1987 Dr. Greene has also been associate head of fundamental research for the Can- cer Center here. The professorship is named for John W. Eckman, a 1943 Wharton alumnus who has been a Life Trustee, chair of the SAS Board of Overseers, president of the Wistar Institute Board of Managers, and member of the Presi- dent's Council. Penn Med is also the home of the Rorer Professorship funded by the estate of the pharmaceutical company's founder. According to his colleague Dr. Peter Nowell, Dr. Greene's research on cancer cells is "the first to show that we can attack tumor cells and leave other cells alone." Studying a particular oncogene, that is involved in the regulation of growth of normal cells, Dr. Greene made major discoveries in how the neu and its product work-but "Most important, he developed antibodies against the gene product that in laboratory animals block the growth of tumors in which that gene is abnormal. This has major potential implications for human cancer in which the neu gene is functionally abnormal-including breast and lung cancer," Dr. Nowell said. Dr. Greene earned his undergraduate and advanced degrees from the University of Manitoba (M.D. in 1973 and Ph.D. in 1977), and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Canada) in 1976. The author of 42 books and monographs and 179 papers, Dr. Greene was on the Harvard medical and public health faculties, then chief of rheumatology/immunology at Tufts before joining Penn. Dr. Kaurouma, Associate VPUL.. - Other Changes Dr. Patricia Kaurouma, MIT's associate dean for student affairs and director of minority education, joins Penn next week as associate vice provost for student affairs. VPUL Kim Morrisson said Dr. Kaurouma will oversee anew division called Student Affairs, which includes Student Activities and Facilities, Student Life Programs, Fraternity/Sorority Affairs, University Counseling Service, Student Health Services, Drug and Alcohol Resource Center and Judicial Inquiry Office. The appointment is one of a series of internal moves. In the new position of Deputy Vice Provost for University Life is George Koval, who has been executive director of student financial and administrative services; Off-Campus Living Director Carolynne Martin is his executive assistant. Thank you for your letter of October 19, 1989. You raise a veryimportant issue thatIhad already begun to addressinmy article (Alma-nac 9/26/89) on "Academic Integrity: A University-Wide Agenda"thatcontains thewords "But there should be no doubt in our institution thatimmediateremoval is to be the end resultofany proven falsification orplagiarism, whether by students, faculty or supporting staffor admini-stration." You may also have read by now the article on "FightingWords" and the SpeakingOut letter andresponse in Almanac 10/17/89.

The issue of what actually took place during the orientation work-shops forthe facilitators andduring the Diversity EducationProgram forFirst-yearstudents isso importantthat asChair oftheFaculty Senateandas Chair of the Steering Committee of the University Council I havealreadyinvited the Vice Provostfor University Life,Dr. Kim Morrisson,to come to the next meeting of the Senate Executive Committee onNovember 1, 1989, and to the nextmeeting oftheUniversity CouncilonNovember 8, 1989, togiveus the results ofthe extensive questionnairefilled in by those who took partin the Program and to answer any ques-tions that people at those meetings may wish to ask.

In your letter you wrote "I realize that one can argue about what issense and what is nonsense, but there is no argument about the truth."However, the real problem is often to discover precisely what is the"truth" about which there can be no further argument.

I certainly would like to know more about the "brave undergraduateon Penn's planning committee for 'diversity education'..." mentionedin Professor Alan Kors' article in the Wall Street Journal (10/12/89)that you circled in the photocopy that you sent to me*. Can you, orProfessor Kors, get me a copy of the "memo," give me an opportunityto talk to the student and the administrator concerned, and let me knowof the context in which that exchange took place? I am surprised thatProfessorKorshadnotraised this previously within theUniversity at theSenateExecutiveCommitteeoratthe University Council so that itcouldhave been investigated already.

As for "the DP article by Professor Michael Cohen concerning thealleged tampering with the truth at the freshman diversity educationsessions" the situation is not quite so straightforward. For example,neither you, nor Professor Kors, nor Professor Cohen were facilitatorsintheprogram, but! was, andsowasProfessorHelen Davies. She went

to the all-day workshop for facilitators on Thursday, August 10, 1989,whereas I went to the one on Tuesday, August 22, 1989. Both of usrememberbeing told that the"IncidentsofHarassmentat theUniversityof Pennsylvania" and the "Scenarios for Afternoon Session" werecompositesorcaseexamples thathadbeen mixed updeliberately sothatno particular person or fraternity wouldbe identified. Thatis why! didnot requestthat "University professor" bechanged. Thatidentificationwas apparently made by Professor Cohen although he knew that Mr.Murray Dolfman was not a "University professor" or even a memberofthe standing faculty. He was a part-time lecturer.

Another problem stems from Professor Cohen's article "What isHappening and Why?"in The Daily Pennsylvanian ofOctober 2, 1989.He wrote that the material in the "Incidents..." that hesaid relates to the"Dolfman affair" is variously "false and libelous," "a lie," a "distor-tion," "totally unfair" and "too serious to be dismissed as an honestmistake" since "the report of the Wharton School Committee onAcademic Freedom [and Responsibility] found that Dolfman's refer-ence to black students as 'ex-slaves' was a one-time occurrence...".

However, areading ofthereport of thatcommitteeinAlmanacApril9, 1985, by no means supports Professor Cohen's claims. What thecommitteedidstatewas thatquestioningattheMarch 12, 1985 ,meetingelicited no affirmative response to whether the remarks with respect toslavery and the 13th Amendment were repeated in the Spring Term,1985. Whatthe "Incidents..."said was"Itwaslaterdiscovered thatotherAfrican-American students who had taken the professor's class had hadsimilar experiences."

The evidence that this is true is byno means trivial. Forexample: Aletter in The Daily Pennsylvanian of March 13, 1985, written by fourstudents in the Classes of '84 and '85 under the heading "FraternityBrothers Support Dolfman As Friend, Teacher" states" For the three-and-a-halfyearsthat we have knownMurray Dolfman, hehasconstantlybeen embroiled in controversy. Hehas been accused morethan once ofshowing blatant favoritism inclass, making sexist, racist andothernon-denominational yet nontheless [sic] offensive remarks in class, andgenerally behaving in a manner unbecoming a faculty member. He iscertainly notunawareoftheseallegations, yethepersists every semesterin the sameexactmanner, recycling to the letter his remarks, jokes anddemeanor."

I have discussed the matter with the Chair of the Wharton SchoolCommittee on Academic Freedom and Responsibility that investigatedthe case. Veryproperlyhedidnot wish to have material published fromhis confidential files and tapes but said that the report did not containeverything that they hadlearned aboutthe case; thatmanystudents hadclaimed thattheremarks had been saidinpastyears; that the Committeedid not wish to publish admissions by Mr. Dolfman concerning repeti-tions of the racist remarks in previous years that were not confirmedbyother testimony; that no students from previous years appeared beforethe Committee at the March 12, 1985 meeting; thatthe statements in theReport were true; that Professor Cohen's conclusions could not bevalidlydrawn fromthe Report; and finally, andmostimportantly, hehadno objections to thestatements in the "Incidents..."that "other African-American students whohad taken the professor's class had had similarexperiences."

I personally, and many others who havediscussed this case with me,feel that Mr. Dolfman, (who after all admitted to, and publicly apolo-gized for, his remarks), has suffered enough, and that anyone who isreally concerned for him will let the matter drop.

Speaking OutResponses on Truth & DiversityFollowing are replies to the Senate Chair'scolumn (opposite) by Professors MichaelCohen andAlan Kors. Further below arecomments by Vice Provost Kim Morrisson.,a message from Mr Dolfman (nextpage),andagroup response to Dr. Kors.

From Professor CohenAccording to the Daily Pennsylvanian

(9/27/89) the Vice Provost for UniversityLife "sent all diversity education facili-tators a memo correcting errors in the La-bor Day program's portrayal of two of themost controversial events on campus inthe past five years." The memo, which Ihave not seen, was sent out after I pointedout factual errors to Dr. Kim Morrisson. Ihave asked Almanac to publish the memo,and I also requested (unsuccessfully) thatthe corrections be publicized so as to reachthe 1700 students who participated in theprogram.

Professor Davies states that facilitatorswere told that the "Incidents of Harass-ment "cited were "composites or caseexamples that had been mixed up deliber-ately so that no particular person or frater-nity would be identified." Regardless ofwhat the facilitators may have been told,they were instructed to read these words tothe students:

The following are examples ofracial, gen-der-related, religious, and homophobic in-cidents of harassment that have taken placeatthe University overthe pastfew years. Theincidents described onthis list are examplesof the difficulties and problems that manystudent and faculty/staff members face atPenn. While some of these events have re-ceived considerable attention over the pastfew years, thereareotherincidents listed thathave notreceived suchpublicity. It is impor-tant to recognize that these less well knownincidents are no less important than thosewhich have been widely publicized.

There is no suggestion in the above that theexamples are composites or may be par-tially inaccurate. Furthermore, I wouldconsider it very unethical to mix fact andfiction in such a context. One incident citedis the following:A University professor continually referredtoAfrican-American students in his class as'ex-slaves' and said that their commentswould be particularly useful when the classdiscussed the ThirteenthAmendment. It waslater discovered that other African-Ameri-can students who had taken the professor'sclass had had similar experiences.

Everyone, including Professor Davies,knows that this refers to Mr. MurrayDolfman. The report of the WhartonAcademic Freedom Committee, whichheld open hearings, stated that "...prior tothe complaints now lodged, no complainthas been filed.., during the twenty-twoyears Mr. Dolfman has taught at Whar-ton .... Students' course evaluations of Mr.Dolfman have been uniformly outstand-

ing..." The Committee also found that"Despite allegations ...that Mr. Dolfmanrepeated his remarks with respect to slav-ery and the 13th Amendment in the SpringTerm 1985, the Committee has found noevidence that would support such allega-tions." Regarding the circumstances ofDolfman's only documented reference to"ex-slaves," the report states: "Mr. Dolfman then expressed surprise that while he,as a Jew and a 'former slave,' celebratedthe end of his slavery at Passover, the blackstudents, whom he likewise called 'formerslaves' or 'ex-slaves,' did not celebrate thepassage of the 13th Amendment."

Perhaps Professor Davies and the com-pilerof the list of incidents know, or thinkthey know, more than was in the report ofthe Academic Freedom Committee. Theycan say anything they want at lunch or atcocktail parties, but when reciting "facts"about the University and about real peopleto freshmen who know nothing about pasthistory, they should adhere scrupulously towhat is on the record and not deal ingossip.

Professor Davies, who in 1985 intro-duced a resolution (which passed) in Uni-versity Council calling for the immediatesuspension of Dolfman without even wait-ing for the report of the Academic FreedomCommittee, now magnanimously urges usto "let the matter drop" in deference toDolfman. Unfortunately, his terms fordropping the matter include accepting atendentious version of history which isbeing imposed on the University and hasbeen force-fed to helpless freshmen.

My column in the DP (Oct.2) also dis-cussed two other misrepresentationsin the facilitator's guide. One concernedalleged racial slurs at a ZBT rush event;when Dr. Morrisson published her reporton this event, conspicuously absent fromthe list of 19 findings of fact was anyreference to racial slurs. The other con-cerned an alleged physical assault on anAfrican-American student. According tothe facilitator's guide, "The student waspunched in the face in an elevator in HighRise East by a white student, who thevictim said 'was trying to put him in hisplace'." When questioned about this inci-dent in University Council (three monthsafter the incident)Dr.Morrissonsaidthather office had no knowledge of such anincident, and no complaint was ever made.There has never been a hearing to ascertainthe facts. Nevertheless, an account of this"incident" was recited to 1700 freshmen.

It is not surprising that when the Uni-versity gets into the business of indoctrina-tion rather than education, old-fashionedvalues like truth and factual accuracy getbattered. The facilitators and the Admini-stration are hardly in a strong position tolecture the students and faculty aboutacademic integrity.

From Professor KorsI do wish that Professor Davies had not

chosen to lecture me on subjects ethical,but since he has, let me reply. The man haschutzpah. Being told by Robert Davies thatMurray Dolfman has suffered enough islike being told by Torquemada that hereticshave suffered enough. In what was, in myopinion, an infamous breach of all decencyand collegial due process, Professor Davieshelped to create the very atmosphere ofwitch-hunt and hysteria in which this Uni-versity disgraced itself in the matter ofMurray Dolfman. He co-authored a letterthat called forhis colleague's suspensionfrom teaching prior to a hearing, as if thisthen and current member ofour facultywere a clear and present danger to thesafety of his students. I well understandwhy he would want the matter dropped.Perhaps we shouldn't talk about theMcCarthy period either, since its victimshave "suffered enough" and some of themeven apologized at the time to their fellowcitizens. I'll take no moral instructionfrom Bob Davies, thank you!

His argument that the "University Pro-fessor" falsely described and further perse-cuted in the harassment scenarios foistedupon our evermore indoctrinated under-graduates was a "composite" and notnecessarily Murray Dolfman is disingen-uous and casuistical bad faith.

His "surprise" that I did not begin an"investigation" into an administrator's ad-vice to an undergraduate that individualismwas racism simply reveals the differencebetween the inquisitor and the critic. ion in the community they were entering.Language chosen to obscure identies mayhave led to confusion on whether they were"composites," but the term is more aptlyapplied to a second set of materials-casestudies used to explore some of the issuesin depth, which were based on compositesof cases handled by the judicial inquiryoffice or by the residential system.

Much as one might wish otherwise, theclimate ofopinion is often formed by inci-dents which never go through a formaljudicial investigative procedure, but insteadare reported through informal networks orsometimes through the campus media.That a student chooses not to press charges,for whatever reason, does not mean that anincident did not happen, and it certainlydoes not mean that the campus or studentsare unaffected.

Professor Cohen's image of "helplessfreshmen" being "force-fed" against theirwill reflects a dim set of expectations ofthe entering class and paints a dismalpicture of their experience. Fortunately, itis not supported by the nearly 81% of thestudents who agreed that "the day was avaluable educational experience" or the97% of the students who agreed that thefacilitators "created an environment inwhich I felt comfortable." From my ownexperience as a facilitator, I can say thatthe first-year students in my group werebright, concerned, challenging, question-ing, willing to debate each other on theissues, and as diverse in opinion as anyCouncil meeting.

On the matter of the exchange cited inProfessor Kors' article, the committee inquestion was considering recommendationsfor the follow-up programs in residence, aneffort separate from the planning of theLabor Day Program. The "administrator"in question was another volunteer commit-tee member who is also a part-time facultymember. He is not a student affairsadministrator, as passages elsewhere in theWall StreetJournal article might suggest.I don't know whether he is "paid to think

about such things," but I am sure he wassurprised to read his private correspondencewith another committee member in The WallStreet Journal. In any case, Professor Korsand I agree that he has the right to expresshis opinion freely in response to another'sviewpoint. Both viewpoints were welcomeand discussed fully by the committee.

Much has been said about "indoctrina-tion," so that it is perhaps worth saying thatthe purpose of the Labor Day Program wasnot to lecture anyone, but to create an op-portunity for discussion, communication,and exploration-surely efforts to be valuedin the business (art? science?) of education.

tone of Professor Kors' letter. Any attackon the integrity of Professor R. E. Davies'actions with respect to the letter describedby Professor Kors as "...an infamousbreach of all decency and collegial due

process..." is indeed an attack on us all. Wedo not accept this intemperate claim ofProfessor Kors, nor do we believe that"...this University disgraced itself in thematter of Murray Dolfman." To deal withthe particulars ofour letter to Almanac, wewould like to clarify the historical recordwith respect to context and chronology.

President Hackney on the 18th of Febru-ary, 1985, sent a letter to the student media(see Daily Pennsylvanian 2/19/85) saying:

I spoke this morning with Mr. MurrayDolfman and emphasized the seriousnesswith which I regarded the incident in hisclass that led toaprotest from black students.I told Mr. Dolfman that a public apologyfrom him was in order. He readily agreed.His statement follows: "I do admit that mypresentation and feigned reaction on No-vember 12, 1984, was overdramatic andunnecessary. I apologized then to those whowere directly affected. And I apologize nowto the entire community."

Our letter signed by 10 faculty membersincluding Professor R.E. Davies read in itsentirety*:

Members of the Black Student League,along with a groupof Black faculty and staffat the University of Pennsylvania, havereshaped the politics and practices of theUniversity. Theyhavetaken thosebehaviorsandattitudes many at this institution assumeto he "standard educational practice" andnamed them appropriately as racist.We support this powerful coalition in

We believe that racial harassment is veryharmful not only to African-Americanstudents directly exposed, but to the camp-us as a whole. Mindful of Section III.E.14of the Handbook for Faculty and AcademicAdministrators, we expressed our view ontemporary suspension with pay and an ex-pedited investigation in order to assess thenature of the action, of the harm, and ap-propriate dispostion of the case.

In summary, the letter signed by Pro-fssor R.E. Davies, along with each of thefollowing signatories, was written subse-quent to Mr. Dolfman's public acknowl-edgement of and apology for his actionsand was written within the legal languageof the Handbook. Mr. Dolfman was sus-pended subsequently. This decision (seeMemorandum from Dean Russell E. Pal-mer, Almanac 4/9/85) was taken on thebasis of the report of the Wharton SchoolCommittee on Academic Freedom andResponsibility and input from the LegalStudies Department and the Dean's Ad-visory Council (which was composed ofsenior members of the Wharton Schoolfaculty). United Way/Penn's Way(s)Several weeks ago the Inquirer reported

thatPenn would be among thelocal employersoffering employees anew option to designatepayroll-deductible United Way/Donor Optiongifts for specific local "umbrella" organiza-tions that raise funds for groups of agencies.Initial campus campaign announcements didnot include the option, but the following wasreleased Monday by University Relations.

This year's campaign at Penn is differentthan previous ones. Four Delaware Valley or-ganizations that raise funds similarly to UnitedWay are being given visibility as options towhich employees may direct all orpart of theircontribution.

Traditional United Way giving optionsremain available to donors, who may eithermake a non-specific contribution with distribu-tion determined by UnitedWay,ordesignate thegift for agencies in one of six categories.

Literature from the United Way and thefour additional fund-raising organizations hasbeen sent to all Penn employees. The four or-ganizations are the Black United Fund, whichprovides financial and technical resources toAfrican-American community-based self-helpprojects; Bread and Roses, a partnership of ac-tivities and donors who are committed to build-ing apermanent financial and institutional basefor social change; United Negro College Fund,which provides financial aid to college-boundAfrican-Americans; and Women's Way, whichsupports arangeofservices for womenandgirls.

Evaluating the 1989 Orientation for Students in a Diverse CommunityOn Monday, September 4, 1989, Labor Day, as part ofnew student

orientation week, the University sponsored a community orientationprogram for new first year students as part of its Diversity EducationProgram. The program was designed by students, faculty, and staff,working in avariety of committees throughout the preceding year, andwas intended to provide a "common experience" for new students. Itwas to be followed by a series of residentially-based programs ondiversity, developed by each first year residential community, to takeplace throughout the academic year.

The content of the Labor Day program was designed to meet thefollowing objectives:

1. To define community and what it means to be a member of adiverse community at the University of Pennsylvania.

2. To recognize the complexity and scope of differences amongpeople and the impact of those differences on interactions.

3. To understand individual responsibility and choices of behaviorsthat enhance or detract from community.

4. To understand the University's behavioral policies.5. To introduce students to relevant campus resources.6.To introduce students to Diversity Education Followup Programs.

The day's activities began with aplenary session at9 a.m. in the Palestrafor all first year students and program facilitators. The audience waswelcomed by PresidentSheldonHackney,ProvostMichaelAiken, ViceProvostKim Morrisson,Chairof the UnitedMinorities Council PatriciaMann, and Presidentof the Black StudentLeague Reuben Brown. Poetand actress Maya Angelou gave the keynote speech..

After the plenary session, the audience broke into small groups ofsizes ranging from ito28 students with twofacilitators, a facultyorstaffmemberanda student. The workshopswerescheduled to begin at 10:30

a.m., break for lunch, and then resume for the afternoon, ending ataround 4:45 p.m. At the end of the day, students and facilitators wereeach given an evaluation form. The preliminary results of those evalu-ations are appended in the form of a report, written by Jo-Ann Zoll,Coordinator of the University's Drug and Alcohol program and GretchenBoris, Associate Director ofStudentData. Participating students andfa-cilitators were also given tickets to the Ron Darian concert which tookplace that evening.

Of the 195 program facilitators participating in the Labor Dayprogram from all parts of the University, 100 were faculty/staff and 95were students. (A listof facilitators is in the full report available frommy office.) The facilitators were trained by attending one of three all-day training sessions held on August 10, August 22 and September 3,1989. Atthe training sessions, the facilitators were givena24-page Fa-cilitators's Manual toguide them intheday's activities, whichincludeda mix of brainstorming exercises, discussions, examination of casestudies, and role-playing exercises.

Themorning program included an icebreaker exercise togetstudentstalking to each other, a review of the objectives of the program,brainstorming exercises exploring common perceptions and anxietiesabout the Penn community, brainstorming exercises about differencesamong people in the Penncommunity, areview ofknown demographicstatistics within the Penn community, discussion of the term "commu-nity" and its meanings to different people, and discussion ofbehaviorsthat add toordetract from asense ofcommunity. Twocasestudies wereexplored, the first concentrating onaroommate conflict, and the secondconcentrating on the telling of racial/ethnic jokes. At the end of thissession, alistofreported occurrencesofconflict between individual andcommunity from campuses around the country was read by the facilita-

tor to the group and discussed, followed by a similar reading anddiscussion of a list describing incidents which had occurred at Penn.After the morning session, the groups were given box lunches whichmost chose to eat outside.

The afternoon session consisted ofan overview ofUniversity poli-cies and procedures governing student conduct including the Code ofConduct, the Studentjudicial system, the University Anti-Discrimina-tion Policy, the Code of Academic Integrity, the Guidelines on OpenExpression, the Racial and Sexual Harassment policies, and the Uni-versity Alcohol and Drug policies. Also included was the range ofsanctions which have been imposed on students for violations of thesecodes. This section was followed by a discussion ofvarious methodsof conflict management and ways to enhance communication andtherebyreduce conflict. Three case studies were used which involvedstudent role plays ofpossible solutions which were then discussed bythe groups. The case studies involved cheating, alcohol abuse and

sexual harassment, each a composite of cases which had occurred atPenn. The afternoon program ended with adiscussion of the follow-upprograms in the residences and the program evaluation.

Somewhere between 1482 (the number of completed evaluations)and 1700 (the numberoflunches distributed tostudents) participated inthe LaborDay program. Overall thedayran quite smoothly, taking intoaccount the logisticsinvolved. The acoustics atthe Palestraprovedto bedisappointing for the opening session, but as the evaluations show, theworkshops were well-received and the facilitators praised. The evalu-ation committee, consisting of Jo-Ann Zoll, Gretchen Boris, RichardCaputo (School of Social Work), Ruth Hall (University CounselingService), Jim Newswanger (Residential Living) and Randy Nepomuceno(undergraduate student), willbedeveloping focus group interviews withrandomly selected faculty and staffparticipants to gather further infor-mation which can be used to improve the program.

Diversity Program: Student Responses to QuestionnairePreliminary evaluation ofthe LaborDayPro-gram (see page 5) was based on two question-naires-one to the 195 facilitators, with 189responding, and the other to the approximately1700 students who participated (1482 respond-ing). Below are the results concerning students.Each section is complete and taken verbatimfrom the report by Jo-Ann Zoll and GretchenBoris, but sections have been omittedforreasons ofspace: those on the keynote speaker,tables showing demographic breakdowns, andrawdata are availablefrom the Office oftheVPUL-Ed.

General ImpressionsQuestions in this area primarily refer to

overall objectives of the day. Most of therespondents were very positive. Informationregarding the keynote is presented in the sec-tion below.

Ninety-four percent (94%) of the respon-dents agreed that the objectives of the day'sactivities were clearly explained.

Over 84% agreed that the day was interest-ing.

More than half of the respondents (56.6%)discovered that there is more diversity at Pennthan they originally thought.

Eighty percentofthe respondents found theprogram to be a valuable educational experi-ence.

Almost all (97.7%) of the respondents be-lieved they would "fit in" at Penn.

Thirteen percentofthe respondents thoughtthe day was a waste of time.

More than 62% of the respondents agreedthat the program "encouraged me to thinkdifferently about diversity."

Students report being generally comfort-able discussing most issues. More studentswere uncomfortable discussing sexual orienta-tion issues (16.4%) and racial issues (10.6%)than discussing religious issues (8.1%) andgender issues (7.5%).Content

Questions in this area asked respondents toreport how much they had learnedaboutissues,policies and procedures.

Nearly all (96 and 97%) ofthe respondentsreported learning at least something about thediversity of people and about resources avail-able at Penn.

Almost half (47.6%) reported learning "alot" about how their behavior influences theexperiences of others within the community.

Students appearto have learnedmoreaboutsexual and racial harassment (60% and 66%,respectively) than about otherpolicies at Penn.Halfor fewer of the students reported learning"a lot" about the following:

- Residential Living Policies- Alcohol Policy- Open Expression Guidelines- Code of Academic Integrity- Student Code of Conduct

Over half(52%) oftherespondents thoughtthe small group sessions were too long. Elevenpercent thought that there was not sufficienttime to cover the material. Please see thecommentssection formoredetailing regardingthe length of the program.

Studentsgenerally found the brainstorming(72.8%) and the role-playing (71.9%) exer-cises to be useful.

Ninety-fivepercent of therespondents agreedthat it was easy to talk with people during theworkshop.

Aboutthreequarters (76.6%)oftherespon-dents agreed that they were looking forward toparticipating in ongoing diversity educationprograms.Overall Evaluations

Whenasked torate the clarity ofthepresen-tation as a whole, 86% thought it was "excel-lent"or "good." In addition, 92% thought thatthe small group sessions were "excellent" or

Only half of the students (55.6%) thoughtthat lunch was at least good.Comments from the Questionnaire

Respondents were asked to comment spe-cificallyon themostbeneficial and leastusefulaspects of the program. They were also askedfor any general comments and suggestions.Tallying ofthese comments produced two general

categories of response: positive and negative.The primary positive comments concerned

the opportunity to share ideas and beliefs,meeting new people, the small group discus-sions and the keynote address. Secondary positivecomments included learning about Penn's re-sources and policies, learning about Penn ingeneral, thehelpfulness ofrole-playing and thecase studies presented during the program.Some typical quotes from respondents:

"In the same group sessions, we got to talk toeachother about how eachofus is responsible andan important part of the community.., and Iliadlots of fun getting to know [students]."

"The small group sessions increased myawareness of the diversity among students and Ithink it allowed people to express their thoughtson extremely important issues and, at the sametime, hear other's views."

"Met new people-also, although I haven'tchanged any of my views, I found the programmade me examine why I hold these views, opin-ions, etc. that I do."

"I found that there are many people like my-self, but I also learned to respect people who aredifferent."

"It helped to make me aware of things that Ineverreallytookinto consideration. Also, itmadePenna much morewarm and friendly place for mebecause there were smaller groups and a lot ofinteraction."

"I was encouraged to realize that thecampus ismaking aconcerted effort to ease any tension andmake Penn the best community it can be."

"I found the role-playing and basic discus-sions about the good and bad things at Penn mostbeneficial because it gave me an idea of what toexpect and what I can do to make my communitybetter."

Primary negative comments concerned theinability to hear the speakers, particularly thekeynote speakerand the length oftheprogram.

Secondary negativecomments included notliking role-playing, the day starting too earlyand disliking the morning speakers.Future Reports

Future reports on the studentsurvey willin-clude discussions that consider responses thatdifferamongstudents from different regions ofthe country, from varying urban/rural back-grounds and different religious affiliation. Asofthis date, wearescheduling follow-upinter-views with randomly selected participants.Complete results should be expected in theearly spring.

Memorial Service for Two International StudentsOn November 16 a memorial service will be held in honor of two Penn graduate

students from abroad who died by violence in recent years, Meera Ananthrakrishnanand Cyril Leung. The service, sponsored by the Penn Women's Center, will be heldfrom 5 to 7 p.m. in the lounge at the Christian Association, 3601 Locust Walk, and isopen to all members of the University.

Ms. Ananthrakrishnan, whocame toPenn from India in September, 1985, to beginherdoctoral work inphysics, was killed by an intruder during the Thanksgiving breakin 1985. She was 24. Economics Graduate Student Cyril Leung of Hong Kong was 25when he died following an assault in Clark Park on October 7, 1988.

Speakers will recall the two students' lives, and others will address such issues asviolence against women, the special needs of international students living in WestPhiladelphia, education on safety awareness, and life in a diverse community.

DEATHSDr. Sadie Alexander, the firstblack woman

toearn adoctorateattheUniversity ofPennsyl-vania, died November 1 at the age of 91. Dr.Alexander earned her doctorate in economiesin 1921 andlaterbecamethe firstblackwomanto graduate from the Law School and was alsothe first admitted to practice by the Pennsylva-nia Bar Association.

Dr. Alexander worked actively for civilrights throughout her life, and was a leader inthe areabefore itbecame amovement-press-ing for desegregation of movie theaters andrestaurants inthe 1920sand '30s. Sheserved asan advisoron civil rights to Presidents Trumanand Kennedy and held a position in everyDemocratic administration alter 1948.

Surviving are her daughters, Rae Alexander-Minter and Mary A. Brown; her son-in-law, ThomasK.Minter, formerassistantsecre-tary of education in the Carter administration;two grandchildren; a step-grandson, and twogreat-grandchildren.

LillyI.Clair, aretiredgrant administratorinthe offices of Research Administration, diedSeptember 8 at the age of 84. Miss ClairreceivedherB.S.degree from Penn's School ofPedagogy in 1927. She began heremploymentwith the University in 1943 and was namedgrant administrator in 1961. She remained inthatposition until her retirement in 1973. Sheis survived by herniece, Mrs. Gordon E. Saxon.

Yolanda Davis, an insurance clerk at theDentalSchool, diedOctober 18 atthe age of43.She first arrived at Penn in December 1977 as

secretary in the Economics Department. In1978 she became administrative assistant inthe Office of Affirmative Action and latertransferred to the Office of Human Resources.In 1983 she joined the Dental School as aninsurance clerk and remained in thatpost untilherdeath. Surviving areherdaughter, RhondaC. Davis, and a grandson, Marquise.

Jan DeGaetani, a leading interpreter ofnew vocal music long associated with PennContemporary Players, died September 15.She made her Philadelphia Orchestra debut in1982performing Professor Richard Wernick'sPulitzer Prize-winning Visions ofTerror andWonder, and performed with the Penn Con-temporary Players on many other occasionsafter its founding in 1964. Geri Fritz, an administrative assistant in theDepartment ofAthletics, died on October 15 atthe age of36. Mrs. Fritz served as a secretaryin Alumni Relations from 1981 to 1985, andthen transferred to the Wharton School. Shejoined the Department of Athletics in June1987. Surviving are her husband, David Fritz,and their daughter, Desiree, born October 9,1989.Gjftsforthefamilyarebeingcoordinatedby

Albeit Garner, a retired custodian for PhysicalPlant, died October 17 at the age of 66. Hecame to Penn in August, 1951, went on long-term disability in October 1976, and retired in1987. Mr. Garner is survived by his wife,Carrie Garner.

Dr. John A. Goff, emeritus professor andformer dean of the Towne Scientific School,died October 24 at the age of 90. Dr. Goffearned his bachelor's degree in 1921 and hismaster's in 1924 from the University ofIllinoisin Urbana-Champaign, where he also earnedhis doctorate in mechanical engineering andthermodynamics in 1927.

Dr. Goff went on to serve on the faculty ofthe University of Illinois from 1930 to 1938,whenhe came to Pennas professor and dean of

the Towne School. While serving as dean, Dr.Goff also headed the mechanical engineeringdepartment until 1950. From 1945 to 1950 hewas director of Penn's Thermodynamics Re-search Laboratory as well. Dr. Goffwas alsofounder and president of the Faculty Club.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia HanawaltGoff; a son, John R.; a daughter, Susan G.Pearl; four grandsons, and a brother.

Edward J. (Ned) Parker, assistant directorinthe OfficeofResearch Administration, diedNovember 1 at the age of 55. Mr. Parker re-ceived his B.A. at Penn in 1957 and thenbecamea writerand programmer for theMooreSchool from 1958-1972. He transferred to theOffice of Research Administration in 1972 ascontract administrator and then became assis-tant director in 1980, the position heheld untilhis death. Mr. Parker is survived by his wife,Dr. Satoko Parker (CW '60 and received herPh.D. from Pennin 1978),andadaughter, RuthAllison Parker (Wh' 87).

Elizabeth Greens Wiley, a 31-year-oldstudent in Penn's Graduate School of FineArts, and husband Peter A. Wiley, an alumnusof the Graduate School of Fine Arts, diedOctober 28. The Wiley's were married Octo-ber 21, 1989 and were spending their honey-moon in Hawaii when killed in the Aloha AirLine Commuter plane crash on the island ofMolokai, Hawaii. Mrs. Wiley earned her A.B.from Smith College in 1980 and came to theUniversity in the fall of 1987. Mr. Wileygraduated from Ohio'sDenison Universityandgraduated from GSFA in 1983.

Elizabeth Wiley is survived by her parents,Mr. G. Davis Greene and Mrs. Ann Greene,who is Assistant to the Dean of Admissions atPenn; sisters, Leslie, Ellen, and Sarah, andbrother Dave. Peter Wiley is survived by hisfather, Welles Wiley; brothers, David and John,and sisters, Hilda and Sarah.
