LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY !

THE COLLECT Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. !THE FIRST READING: !READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the

Book of Ecclesiasticus Chapter 44 beginning at the 1st verse !

Let us now praise famous men, and our fathers in their generations. The Lord apportioned to them great glory, his majesty from the beginning. There were those who ruled in their kingdoms, and were men renowned for their power, giving counsel by their understanding, and proclaiming prophecies; leaders of the people in their deliberations and in understanding of learning for the people, wise in their words of instruction; those who composed musical tunes, and set forth verses in writing; rich men furnished with resources, living peaceably in their habitations -- all these were honored in their generations, and were the glory of their times. There are some of them who have left a name, so that men declare their praise. And there are some who have no memorial, who have perished as though they had not lived; they have become as though they had not been

born, and so have their children after them. But these were men of mercy, whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten; Their posterity will continue for ever, and their glory will not be blotted out. Their bodies were buried in peace, and their name lives to all generations. !Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God. !PSALM 149 Cantate Domino.

1.Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song; * sing his praise in the congregation of the faithful. 2.Let Israel rejoice in his maker; * let the children of Zion be joyful in their king. 3.Let them praise his name in the dance; * let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp. 4.For the Lord takes pleasure in his people* and adorns the poor with victory. 5.Let the faithful rejoice in triumph; * let them be joyful on their beds. 6.Let the praises of God be in their throat* and a two edged sword in their hand; 7.To wreak vengeance on the nations* and punishment on the peoples; 8.To bind their kings in chains* and their nobles in links of iron; 9.To inflict on them the judgement decreed;* this is glory for all his faithful people. Hallelujah! !Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen

THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Revelation to John Chapter 7 beginning at the 2nd verse !I saw another angel ascend from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea,  saying, "Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God upon their foreheads."  And I heard the number of the sealed, a hundred and forty-four thousand sealed, out of every tribe of the sons of Israel. After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no man could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood round the throne and round the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen." Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, clothed in white robes, and whence have they come?" I said to him, "Sir, you know." And he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night within his temple; and he who sits upon the throne will shelter them with his presence. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." !Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God. ! !!

THE HOLY GOSPEL Gospeller: The Lord be with you

All: And also with you !Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according

to Matthew All: Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time seeing the crowds, Jesus went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:  "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.  "Blessed are the meek, for they shall

inherit the earth. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.  "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.  "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.  "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.  "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  "Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ. ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord. !

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: !

T h e Solemnity o f A l l Saints is celebrated o n t h e f i r s t o f November. I t i s instituted to honour

all the saints, known and unknown, and, according to supply any deficiencies in the celebration of saints' feasts during the year. !Its origin lies in the common commemorations of martyrs who died in groups or whose names were unknown. !These observances were held on various days in different parts of the Church; over time these celebrations came to include not only the martyrs but all saints. !The November 1st date was institutionalized in 837 when Pope Gregory IV ordered its universal observance. !Professor Lawrence Cunningham, Emeritus Professor at University of Notre Dame tells that that to be declared a saints does not imply that the person is in heaven; but rather that the person is worthy of veneration. !The festival of All Saints helps to to look through the family album of our christian forebears who in

various circumstances made every effort to allow the light of Jesus Christ to shine forth. !At this time we take a look at what Ludwig Wittgenstein calls the family resemblance as we seek to examine what it is that we have in common with those who have washed their robes and made then white in the blood of the lamb. (Revelation 7:14) !The saints of the christian faith were ordinary human beings, they lived, laughed were very much aware that they were prone to error at times became frustrated; but in most circumstances kept the ancient faith which they have passed on to us. !There were those who were renown for prayer and spiritual direction, others for the articulation of deep theological truths; still others for missionary work as they spread the Gospel. !They lived in periods of war and in times of deep economic and financial depression. !It is when we look at this christian family album that we can know that God will give us the grace and strength never to give up; but to keep trusting in him. !May God almighty give us grace to remain faithful in reciting Morning and Evening Prayer, and to participating in the Holy Mass, that we may keep the faith which saints of old believed. !!Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA, (The Rev’d Canon) Rector !
