Ye President’s Message
Avast Ye Eastern Irish Setter seadogs,
Give No Quarter, We ROCKED ye galleon!
Shivver me timbers didnâ we batten down th' hatches 'n put on a great Na-
tional!?
We heaved 'n we hoâd 'n th' final booty was a week o' dogs, fun, grub 'n drink.
Captân Karolynne ran a tight ship aided by First Mate Mariette. ALL hands
were on deck makin' sure th' EISA ship stayed on course.
As I look back on th' National th' word that comes t' mind be TEAMWORK!
Originally, I thought I would thank everyone individually. However, this was nah
an individual event, 'twas a crew event. EISA showed that we were truly a crew
able t' work fer th' common good 'n work well wit' others.
Everyone pitched in. Everyone used thar individual skills t' contribute t' th' end
result. Everyone gave as much as they could based on health, time 'n areas o'
expertise. A varied group o' individuals morphed into a united crew wit' a com-
mon goal. One example stands out. Th' hotel ran late gettin' th' ballroom ready
fer us t' decorate on Friday night. Thin's looked bad. Mariette sent out an All
Hands on Deck askin' fer help 'n everyone came runnin' from every part o' th'
show. 'Twas amazin'!
We sailed through a wonderful week in Rogue Island 'n. Best be proud o' our
success! I guess we needs t' look into th' wind 'n get ready t' set sail t' Ohio.
YO HO!

EISA BOD Meeting July 24, 2016. A change was noted that Rick
Krasley is the sweeps judge for Indoor 2018. Motion to approve by

was that a documentation procedure for cash transfers needs to be in
place especially for the upcoming 2017 ISCA Nationals. Anne
Marie Kubacz made a motion, seconded by Lynne Godshall, that
cash transfers to the EISA treasury include a written record cit-
ing Date, Amount, Source and a receipt would to be turned over

ette O’Malley was assigned the responsibility of procuring suitable
cash envelopes that include a receipt.

Standing Committee Reports
Written committee reports had been supplied in advance to all BOD members.
Committee financial reports were filed with the recording secretary. In order to
expedite the meeting (due to the severe weather), the BOD concentrated on the
below committees from which they requested further action.
a. Audit Committee – Peter Kubacz, Chair
Peter Kubacz will chair the 2017 EISA Audit committee assisted by Brad
Porterfield and Debra Hamilton. Peter plans to conduct the audit in January
2017.
b. Constitution – Mariette O’Malley, Chair
AKC has not yet officially responded to the changes in the EISA Constitution
submitted to them in Fall 2015 after the EISA membership votes. The consti-
tution chair, Mariette O’Malley, suggested that she mail another copy of the
revised constitution to the AKC by FEDEX return receipt mail. The BOD
agreed with her plan and noted that the AKC is typically slow in responding to
club constitution changes but that clubs should go ahead with the changes
voted upon by the membership.
c. Facebook – Lynn Kwiatkowski, Chair.
The BOD requested that the chair contact ISCA President, Heidi Laab about
arrangements for the 2017 ISCA Nationals Facebook Page.
d. Membership – Debra Krasley, Chair
Since only about a third of the EISA members have paid their 2017 dues, Anne
Marie Kubacz emailed out a dues reminder to members immediately after the
BOD meeting
10
e. Trophy Plaques (Members) – Lydia Miller, Chair
The BOD requested that the February EISA Touch O’Blarney contain
a form that can be sent by members to Lydia Miller for the ordering of
Trophy Plaque awards. Presentations will be at the Annual Bucks
General Membership Meeting and Picnic on May 6, 2017. The picnic
organizer is also Lydia Miller.
f. Trophies (Events) – Anne Marie Kubacz, Liaison
A list of shows for which trophy donations are needed is to be sent to
Karolynne McAteer. The BOD consensus was to schedule for July 23
(Fun Day) BOD meeting a discussion about trophy purchases using
club income from the May 2017 ISCA Nationals. Also, arrange-
ments have been made for the Casper Trophy to be carried to the In-
door Winter Harvest by Peter Kubacz who noticed that the base stand
is missing. After the BOD meeting, Anne Marie Kubacz issued an
email request to the members about the location of the base stand.
g. Touch O’Blarney – Susan Sullivan, Chair
Deadline for submissions to the Winter newsletter is February 13,
2017. Wins, new titles, setter tails and news are requested.

should be paid. The motion was approved unanimously.
Event Committee Reports

The BOD provided feedback for the Harvest committee meeting
Sunday, January 8, 2017 at 7 pm. The consensus was that the
2017 food arrangements were satisfactory in which each club
supplied lunch for their day.
A.M. Kubacz emphasized that an Obedience Judge is needed for
the EISA Harvest event on Sunday Oct. 8, 2017. The need for
flexibility of judge expenses was agreed upon by the BOD.
b. Agility Events, Lynne Godshall, Chair

Anne Marie Kubacz made a motion, seconded by Mariette
O’Malley that EISA will send trophy donations of $50 for each
ISCA 2017 event as well as an ad for the ISCA National Event.
b. AKC Educational Events
It was noted that the advertised 2017 January Grooming and Handling
Seminar is considered a club educational event even though it was
cancelled due to low enrollment. Susan Sullivan. who agreed to in-
vestigate suitable AKC education events, submitted the following
link: https://images.akc.org/pdf/JE0002.pdf. A discussion about a

Thoughts On The National
by Rick Krasley
Wow!!! Best of Breed and Best of Breed Owner Handled at the National
Specialty. It’s something that you dream of happening. Then it does! Go-
ing BOB at the 2017 National Specialty was the furthest thing from my
mind. My personal goal was to have Teddy in the best condition possible
and to show him to the best of my ability. And maybe, make it through a
cut or two. When that happened, I couldn’t have been happier.
Then it came to the lunch break and the bitches. There was a lot of time to
think about going back into the final competition. Here we go! As the
final cuts were made and the Judge is moving us and rearranging his line-
up, I became more and more nervous as he appeared to be making his final
decisions.
When Mr. Faulkner approached me and said “Sir, put your dog in that
corner”, my heart began to beat a “bit” faster. I thought, OMG, could this
be happening, as he placed the balance of the dogs behind me? I heard
from outside the ring, “Breathe, Rick, just keep breathing”.
As he said “take them around”, I took a deep breath, looked at Teddy, and
off we went. I couldn’t believe the Judge pointed to us and said “Sir, you
are Best of Breed”. Words can not describe that feeling! Realizing what
had just happened, I looked up to the sky out of respect for Fran. I knew
Teddy and I weren’t alone in that ring.
I am so happy for Charlie and Fran, and so proud of Teddy for being on
his game that day. I am so thankful for my wife’s support, and the encour-
agement of the many friends that have helped me get back in the ring after
a 12 year hiatus.
I hope that everyone got
to read the post that Mary
Lamphier put on the
ISCA facebook page in
response to the question
“Why go to the Na-
tional?” When I read
this, it brought me to
tears. I truly am just an
ordinary guy that loves
my dog, and does the best
I can whenever we enter
the ring.

Tale of the tail by Pat Lyons
This is the tale of my adventure at the ISCA National. Seanpat Macse JH
(Snacky Macky to his friends) was entered in Bred By Exhibitor dog under
Judge Peter Frost. The weather forecast was for cool and clear on Thurs-
day for the dog classes. This was good because neither Macse nor I do
well in the heat. Suffice it to say, the temperature was in the 90s with sun
beating down all day.
We started out okay but after the second time around the ring (which
seemed as big as 2 football fields) we began to melt. Mr. Frost asked me to
try to get Macse’s tail up. We did another go around with me talking a
blue streak to Macse. We WON THE CLASS!!!!
When we left
the ring, we
were both in
difficulty from
the heat. With
about an hour
of judging until
winners, I was-
n’t sure either
of us could
give a reason-
able perform-
ance in the
ring. Shelley
and Christine to the rescue!!! Shelley grabbed the dog, put him on her ta-
ble with a cooling blanket on his back and “freshened his grooming.”
Christine got him a drink and put cool cloths on me. Several people of-
fered water and we gradually recovered a bit.
Winners dog went in the ring. One trip around and I was almost over-
come: Macse’s tail began to droop. Anne Marie to the rescue. She put
cool cloths on my head and neck. Everyone encouraged us from ringside
and the applause was amazing. This gave both of us just enough. WIN-
NERS DOG!
Judges comment “ I wish he were a little happier but it is good enough.”
AMAZING What a thrill!!
Two days later, weather was perfect and we flew around the ring. No love
from the breed judge but the applause and support were wonderful. This
win was truly a group effort and is dedicated to Breeder-Owner Handlers
everywhere

Pursuit Of the Double Que, Triple, Quad, Cinco, Seis
By Lynne Godshall
You are now able to enter up to 6 events a day at an AKC Trial if you are
running at the Master level. If you plan to enter all six you better make sure
conditioning is a part of your training for both you and your partner. You
will need cardio and sprint exercises along with mental conditioning. They
do not all have to be done in one day and can be spread out during the
course of the week, but you should hit on all fascists of the sport. You will
need an On and Off Switch. A lot of an agility day is down time and then
hurry up and wait time. All of the training and conditioning is preparation
for under a minute of actual performance time.
You have to prepare for your seasons. I generally break my training into 2
seasons, Fall and Summer, with emphasis on the special shows like our
breed National, Agility National the Invitational and Westminster. I ask
myself, Am I Qualified for any or how do I get Qualified etc?
I start my year in January after a two-week vacation from training. I have
six weeks to plan for Westminster. We start with warm exercises to get
muscles warmed up. These include Puppy Push Ups: three sets, sit/down
sit/down sit/down. Next we perform three sets of Back Up’s the length of
a building, circles in both directions and then figure 8’s around my legs.
When those exercises are completed we move into Cardio. Our canine
partner jumps six 12-inch jumps that are 6 feet apart six times. This is
called a jump chute. After 2 weeks we move to Jump Lines and Weave
Pole Relays and raise the Jump Chute to 16 inches inside and 24 outside.
This gets handler and partner’s blood pumping! Finally, we do sequences
with Impulse control work with contacts.
All my classes start with this theme in mind and I encourage all my stu-
dents to teach their dog to retrieve so that they can do 10 minutes of re-
trieving at least three times a week outside and in the winter up and down
steps. In addition a good conditioning program includes three walks per
week of at least 30 minutes and one at an hour. Now, I know this sounds
like a lot, but you do the math.
25
Six classes at a trial, six 8-minute walk thrus, six 5-minute walks for elimi-
nation. Walking back and forth to a car or crating area 6 times probably
equals at least 2 hours of walking per dog. Who just runs one dog? It is
imperative to keep yourself and your partner in shape, drink plenty of flu-
ids, stay cool and have fun trialing.
We had some nice runs at the National. After three days of rain the sun
finally came out on Agility Day. Christie Q’d in T2B and won her Open
Fast class, fell off the dog walk in Standard and took down bars in Jump-
ers. But, at the end of the day we slept well, ate well and were pleased with
our performance.

Pat and Macse’s Great Adventure
by Fiona Geiser
Congratulations to Patricia Lyons, M.D. and to her dog, Macse, who
won Bred by Exhibitor and Winner’s Dog under Judge Peter Frost at the
2017 ISCA National. What a joy it was to be present to watch Pat and
Macse maneuver through the large National ring as well the unsea-
sonably hot weather. I always knew that Pat is very persistent. What I
did not know was how much persistence it would take to breed, whelp,
train, and eventually handle a dog to such a win. Great job, Pat.
