• In recognition of the upcoming 100th birthday celebration of Stan Kenton in 2011, this documentary by award-winning jazz filmmaker Graham Carter covers all facets of Kenton’s amazing career and includes much of the groundbreaking music that was performed by the stan Kenton orchestra over the years.

• Interviews with people associated with Kenton’s long and successful career.

• Hundreds of images from the Kenton archives.• Rare film and television performances by the Orchestra.• Kenton is acknowledged as one of the pioneers in developing

contemporary big band jazz, with a career as bandleader starting in the early 1940s and lasting through the late 1970s. He was one of the pioneers of integrating afro-cuban rhythms with big band jazz, and was at the forefront of introducing jazz education to colleges and high schools throughout the world.

“Before there were dead Heads, Trekkies, and even Beatlemaniacs, there were Kentonites … sixty years ago, stan Kenton put the musical world on notice that he was going to add his signature sound to american popular music, and pop/jazz fans have been rabidly divided on his merits, akin to the Tories and Loyalists. only the likes of chet Baker or sun ra have as strong a cult following as Kenton.” — All About Jazz

“There have been few jazz musicians as consistently controversial as stan Kenton. dismissed by purists of various genres while loved by many others, Kenton ranks up there with chet Baker and sun ra as jazz’s top cult figure … Kenton always had a different vision.” — All Music Guide

“stan, like his music, had a bigger than life presence. stan’s music was not afraid to be big, emotionally and sonically. i actually don’t intellectually understand why his music still has such a powerful effect on me, but i’m grateful for the feeling every time i listen to one of his albums.” — Peter Erskine

“He did not play his music to be popular. He had a vision of what he wanted in music, and he didn’t water it down to give it a broader appeal.” — don Bagley

jAzz APRIL 2011

• Solo debut of former e.s.t. drummer Magnus Öström.• Features special guests Pat Metheney & Dan Berglund.• Öström joined up with his old friend, sound engineer

Janne Hansson, to record some brand-new compositions he had written during the period following Esbjörn Svensson’s untimely passing and the dissolution of e.s.t.

• Although Öström’s distinctive grooves and circular way of playing with dynamics may remind you of e.s.t., Thread of Life sounds fundamentally different as Öström focuses on sounds instead of melodies. The extremely diverse electronic effects, vocal parts, and guitar sounds featured here are closer to art rock or jazz-rock. if e.s.t. were a pop band playing jazz, Öström’s project could be described as a rock band playing jazz.

jAzz APRIL 2011

• In 1949, trumpeter Bill Coleman was offered a European tour featuring us musicians on their first post-WWii appearances. He teamed up with saxophonist Don Byas, vocalist Pops Whitman, and five French musicians.

• Coleman’s choice of titles reflects a shift from then up-to-date standard tunes to well known older ones, fitting his suave, sensitive interpretations and moving between traditional and modern improvisations.

• Byas, often part of the famous Minton playhouse jam sessions in New york, was adopting a new style of exciting jazz called “bebop.” He states his position as the “younger musician’s role model” with brilliant playing.

• To a large degree, the five Frenchmen featured here had already aborbed the new style of jazz. michel devillers’ Hodges-like playing is constantly interrupted by bebop phrases, and vibist geo daly definitely remains a Hampton disciple.

• Draws on the many sides of Herbert’s musical world, from stripped-down ukulele strums through recent classics and dark-hearted remixes that present her work in a brand new light.

• Gwyneth Herbert continues to redefine (and defy) expectations! a singer-songwriter with one foot in the jazz world and the other somewhere in the future—along with Pierrot eyes and polka dot shoes—she appears whimsical but writes beautiful melodies and has a poet’s grasp of the world.

• Inspired lines around the block at the Rochester Jazz Festival (where her show was in the Top 10 of over 200).

Air Mail Music Brazil Calypso Samba

Samba, calypso, maracatu... We are in Bahia, in the Brazilian Nordeste, where a complex musical tradition is dominated by African influences. Ile Axe, a group devoted to Afro-Brazilian music, combines steel band with Brazilian rhythms, and maracatu with jembe. The result is a joyous carnival atmosphere—Brazilian music as you have never heard it before! On this album, the group’s creative works are sensuous, mysterious, and powerful, based on African melodies and rhythms that—despite the massive displacements of whole populations—have retained their soul. Another originality lies in the group’s combination of steel drums (from the Caribbean) with Brazilian music, resulting in a bewitching new rhythm: calypso-samba!
