Offering music lovers a unique opportunity to discover and share a collection of unknown Spanish musical gems, Lauda is the label of La Grande Chapelle. Founded in 2005, it produces the recordings of the ensemble, with attractive programs mainly centered on Spanish vocal music of the 16th to the 18th centuries. Lauda comes to Allegro Classical via Outhere.

RECENt FEAtURES & REVIEWS THE NEW YORK TIMES gives a superb review to Inon Barnatan’s new Avie CD: “Each of the pieces on Darknesse Visible, a new recording by the brilliant pianist Inon Barnatan, was inspired by a literary work. The thoughtful program is typical for this insightful musician. But Mr. Barnatan’s extraordinary playing is what makes the release so rewarding.”

17 selections of Byzantine chant

“Sung gorgeously ... like jeweled light flooding the space.” — Los Angeles Times

Ancient Byzantine chants begin this 1,000-year journey from Constantinople to California, followed by musical encounters with Crusaders and Venetians, including Greek and Latin polyphony from Renaissance Crete. East meets West again at St. Sophia Cathedral in

Los Angeles, where Frank Desby founded a tradition of Greek-American choral music with his Californian colleagues. The tour comes full circle with the mystical ecstasy of Radiant Cloud, a sonic icon of the Transfiguration by Athenian composer Michael Adamis.

DVORÁK: Poetic Tone Pictures, Op. 85

Dvorák is not known for his piano compositions, and this cycle of 13 character pieces is almost unknown. The music is typical of the composer’s style and beauty, but not necessarily written in pianistic style.

SCHUBERT: Wanderer Fantasy in C, Op. 15, D760 • Impromptu, Op. 90, D899 • Impromptu, Op.posth. 142, D935

“Extraordinarily fresh and alive, up on all the latest musicological evidence without ever making it sound affected or stylized (just stylish!), recorded in beautiful clear sound, and featuring an extraordinary pianist named Viviana Sofronitsky … [who] plays the cadenzas as if they were absolutely spontaneous, and the ones she supplies where Mozart left none are illuminating miracles of charm and invention.” — Audiophile Audition

Coming from a famous musical family (her father was the great Russian virtuoso Vladimir Sofronitzky), Viviana Sofronitsky presents Schubert’s most important piano pieces played on a historical (contemporary) fortepiano (after Conrad Graf, 1819, by Paul McNulty).

Bach, as completed by Prof. Thomas Meyer-Fiebig, head of the Composition department at Kunitachi Graduate School of Music in Tokyo. WAITS/BRENNAN: 13 songs • WEILL: 2 songs • TAMS: Pull down lads • TRAD.: 3 songs and dances

“Originally presented by Opera North, this unlikely but gripping project merits the wider audience that this live recording will bring. Gavin Bryars and his team take the songs of Tom Waits and his wife, Kathleen Brennan, and present them incongruously but superbly sung by the pure-voiced English mezzo Jess Walker, accompanied by a wheezy, circus-style band that features harmonium, accordion, musical saw, and trumpet-violin. Some Kurt Weill/Bertolt Brecht ditties and Gypsy dances make perfect complements.” — The Times

The music of Tom Waits in new versions authenticated by the gravelly-voiced singer himself! Says Waits: “I’m honored to have an artist of Gavin Bryars’ stature dress these songs up and take them out for an elegant night on the town.” Mercy and Grand celebrates

the music of Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan alongside other composers: pieces by Kurt Weill, some folk music, a John Tams fairground ballad, a tango, and a gypsy waltz. The project was put together by Opera North Projects in arrangements by Gavin Bryars,

Jim Holmes, and Joe Townsend.

LED ZEPPELIN: Kashmir • Babe I’m Gonna Leave You • Whole Lotta Love • Lakehurst • The Rain Song • Black Dog • Houses of the Holy • Communication Breakdown • Immigrant Song • Stairway to Heaven • After All

Two years ago, Jan Kazda came up with the idea of putting together a program using only a string quartet and bass guitar. He didn’t want to feature his own compositions, and he was very used to arranging music, sometimes without much respect for the original. The clarity and simplicity of the riffs in the Led Zeppelin numbers featured on this CD are ideally suited to musical development. After all, these songs have already stood the test of time!

On this new recording with pianist/composer Vassily Lobanov and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (founded by Claudio Abbado), Kolja Blacher presents the last orchestral work of Robert Schumann, the concerto for violin and orchestra in D minor, alongside two pieces that rank among Schumann’s most passionate chamber music.

Ensemble Berlin was founded in 2000 by an ensemble of musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic, who got together the previous year to play at the Landsberger Sommermusiken music festival. The ensemble consists of eight people, including arranger Wolfgang Renz, who arranged Maurice Ravel’s “Le Tombeau de Couperin” and Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” for the first Berlin Philharmonic recording. On this new album, he set about arranging music by Carl Maria von Weber.

VICTORIA: Hymns, Motets, & an antiphon • Additional contributions from Palestrina, Giovanelli, Bendinelli, Razzi, Asola, Rodio, Clavijo del Castillo, Animuccia, Conforti, Jacobus de Kerle, Fernando de las Infantas & Anonymous

The confraternity of the Resurrection of S. Giacomo degli Spagnoli—the Castilian national church in Rome—was responsible, from 1579 onwards, for organizing the Easter celebrations in the Piazza Navona, one of the most spectacular public festivities during the time of Spanish supremacy in Italy. This double CD offers a never-before-undertaken evocation of the music that might have been heard in

the church and around the square during this most important of Roman celebrations. It brings together an enormously varied selection of vocal and instrumental pieces by composers who, together with Victoria, were either involved in the organization of the festivities (such as Francisco Soto or Ruggiero Giovanelli) or whose music was preserved in the S. Giacomo degli Spagnoli archive. This superb

recreation, offering us a new reading of Victoria’s work, submerges us in the sonorities that he would have been familiar with in the latter part of his Roman period, from sumptuous polychoral works with Venetian influences to the simple laude spirituali associated with

the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri. In short, it is another first for La Grande Chapelle, establishing a context in which to place one of the greatest composers of the Spanish Renaissance.

LOESCHEL: Songs of Innocence

Hannes Loeschel sets William Blake’s cycle of poems “Songs of Innocence” to music, ably assisted by marvelous British vocal artist Phil Minton. The presumption of innocence as seen by Blake, Minton’s vocal skill, and Loeschel’s playful musical transformation of the poems make this production a captivating new release. The musicians of the Exit Eden ensemble, some of them very young, expertly support the composer. Blake’s poems—and the illustrations by Willy Puchner that they inspired—are shown side by side in the booklet.

Jazz-inspired improvisations on sacred songs of the Baroque and Renaissance

The ensemble Jazz ‘N’ Spirit surprised the music world with its first disc, Continuum, which was immediately showered with praise by music critics. The group’s recipe for success is simple: take acoustic guitar, bass, and saxophone; select a bit of percussion; revel in the rich song repertoire of the Baroque and Renaissance; and combine the above with the pure, nonstop acoustic carrying power of a venerable monastery hall and a perfectly balanced sound technique in 2+2+2 recording style!

PLAYABLE IN ALL CD PLAYERS. For optimal sound, use compatible surround sound system.

“Freshness, purity, and liturgical glow. Duncan Ferguson, the master of music, is plainly a wizard.” — The Times

Celebrating his 50th birthday in 2012, Gabriel Jackson has had a long and close association with the Choir of St. Mary’s Cathedral. This is the choir’s second disc of Jackson’s choral music on Delphian, and under Duncan Ferguson’s dynamic direction they present a sequence of recordings that center on the Hymn to St. Margaret of Scotland, which has been newly written for the choir. A fitting celebration for Jackson’s half-century celebration, this disc opens a window on the luminous sound world of one of Britain’s finest choral composers.

J.S. BACH: Quodlibet, BWV 524 • Der Herr denket an uns, BWV 196 • J.C. BACH: Meine Freundin, du bist schön • BÖHM: Mein Freund ist Mein

Let us once more immerse ourselves in the musical life of Eisenach as it was at the end of the 1670s. One Sunday afternoon, after having played for the services in their respective churches, cousins Johann Ambrosius Bach and Johann Christoph Bach were sitting in a Bierstube—a moment of relaxation, with word games, laughter, and a discussion about Johann Christoph’s coming marriage. After several beers and pipefuls of tobacco, they have an idea for a secular cantata for the festivities that will follow the wedding ceremony. Christoph will compose the music, while Ambrosius will put together the text and instructions for its performance. Johann Sebastian Bach must have heard talk of such festivities and their celebratory cantatas from his early childhood, and it must have been very much in the same spirit that he was inspired to compose the incredible Quodlibet, which seems so out of place among all his other works. If, however, we carefully examine how Bach composed his secular (and even a few sacred) cantatas, we can see that he had a great instinct for theatre and amusement. Certain passages in his biography even reveal that he was not a man who would turn down a good glass of wine!

The aroma of coffee links East and West in a mysteriously sensual manner. Equally sensual are the sounds of the Pera Ensemble, and their latest CD brings to life the enthusiasm of earlier centuries for the mystic East. The musicians, who have long established an enthusiastic following at major festivals, bring great vigor and spirit to their playing. European and Eastern compositions are fascinatingly contrasted and vividly conveyed to the listener, and the subtle combination of instruments from both cultures brings the seemingly different styles of music amazingly close together.

TCHAIKOVSKY: String Quartet Movement in B-flat • String Quartet No. 1 in D, Op. 11 • String Quartet No. 2 in F, Op. 22 • String Quartet No. 3 in E-flat minor, Op. 30 • Souvenir de Florence, Op. 70 • Sextet in D minor for 2 violins, 2 violas & 2 cellos

Chamber music takes an important place among the compositions by Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky, who tried to solve the same dramaturgic tasks in his chamber works as those he faced in the symphonic and theatrical ones. Composed in different periods of his life, these chamber pieces reflect the evolution of Tchaikovsky’s style, and are tightly connected with the stage and orchestra compositions of the time The Borodin Quartet is not just an outstanding ensemble but an artistic tradition of 20th-century music, formed in 1944 as a student ensemble in the class of Mikhail Terian, a professor of the Moscow Conservatory and a remarkable viola player and conductor.

Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra/Herbert von Karajan: conductor

BEETHOVEN: Coriolanus Overture • Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 • Symphony No. 6 in F, Op. 68 “Pastoral”

Herbert von Karajan is one of the most important conductors of the past century. Similar to an avant-garde composer, who gave attention to the smallest touch of sound, Karajan worked on the world-famous symphonies of Beethoven, Brahms, and Bruckner as well as Richard Strauss’ symphonic poems, presenting them as enticing musical narrations, glittering with brilliant colors. These recordings were made during Karajan’s tour of Moscow in 1968, his third visit to the USSR during the course of five years.

Glenn Gould: piano

BERG: Piano Sonata, Op. 1 • WEBERN: Piano Variations, Op. 27 • KRENEK: Piano Sonata No. 3, Op. 62, No. 4 (exc.) • J.S. BACH: The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080 (exc.) • Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (exc.)

At the beginning of May 1957, a young Canadian pianist, not well known to general public, performed at the Moscow Conservatory. Glenn Gould’s concerts in Moscow and Leningrad several years later, when the musician was at the high point of his glory and his best professional form, were an enormous success. But as Gould admitted, it was his first visit in 1957 that initiated the renown he would later achieve. This tape, which retains moments of live communication between Gould and his Russian listeners, is valuable evidence of the event.

Sviatoslav RichterRichter Plays Tchaikovsky & Rachmaninov

Sviatoslav Richter: piano

TCHAIKOVSKY: The Seasons (exc.) • RACHMANINOV: Études-Tableaux, Opp. 33 & 39 (exc.)

In 1983, the charming blue hall of the Moscow Conservatory was repaired and opened anew, marked by two recitals given by outstanding Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter. Three years later, it received the name “Rachmaninov Hall,” after the greatest composer and graduate of Moscow Conservatory. Undoubtedly Richter paid his respects to Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, the artistic path of both of whom was directly connected with the Conservatory, when he set up the programs of his first concerts at the Rachmaninov Hall.

AlphaLos Músicos de Su AltezaIl tormento e l’estasi (The Agony and the Ecstasy)

Los Músicos de Su Alteza/Luis Antonio González: conductor

ROSSI: Cantata a 5—Il peccator pentito • MAZZOCCHI: Pentito si rivolge a Dio • MARINI: Ciacona • CARISSIMI: Jephte

Los Músicos de Su Alteza has established a reputation as the champion of unjustly forgotten Spanish music. In this new recording based on the themes of torment and ecstasy dear to the baroque mind, Luis Antonio González provides us with a selection of works that are as unexpected as they are unknown, tying everything together in the end with a masterpiece by Carissimi. The musicians breathe new life into 1640s Rome and all the emotions conveyed by the Cantatas on this recording: sin, guilt, regret, penitence, punishment, supreme joy, ecstasy, and glory.

Marc-Antoine CHARPENTIERLeçons de Ténèbres

CHARPENTIER: Leçons de ténèbres (3)

In France, during the reign of Louis XIV, the religious service known as Tenebrae was one of the most distinctive ceremonies in the liturgical year. Marc-Antoine Charpentier composed Tenebrae settings throughout his career, 31 lessons in all. The three presented here, written for the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of Holy Week, are scored for a solo bass voice, accompanied by an orchestra composed of recorders, oboes, strings, bassoon, and organ. After the success of Vivaldi’s Concerti per il flauto traversier (Gramophone Editor’s Choice), flautist and conductor Alexis Kossenko presents a new vision of this highly dramatic work.

Ludwig SPOHRThe Forgotten Master: 4 Concertos for Clarinet

Lausanne Chamber Orchestra/Paul Meyer: clarinet, conductor

SPOHR: Clarinet concertos (4)

We are only just beginning to rediscover the works of Louis Spohr (1784–1859), who was not only a composer but also a virtuoso violinist, possibly the greatest conductor of his time, and a renowned teacher. Wishing to be as faithful as possible to the original works for this recording, clarinetist and conductor Paul Meyer approached the Internationale Louis Spohr Gesellschaft in Kassel, which possesses the original manuscripts of the Fourth Concerto, the sketches for Nos. 3 and 4, and copies of the manuscripts of Nos. 1–3. This magnificent performance with the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne gives us an opportunity to discover (or rediscover) these very fine works.

In early 18th-century England the popularity of the flute was matched by the prodigious publication of music. Often the music was written by professional flautists, rendering even the most difficult and virtuosic music very satisfying to play. Alongside sparkling sonatas by Loeillet, Handel, and Arne—and Weideman’s brilliant concerto—traditional music from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland has been included here.

Throughout the Middle Ages, the rulers of Eastern Spain—the kings of Aragon and counts of Barcelona—longed for a foothold in Italy. It was not until 1442, when Alfonso the Magnanimous defeated Rene of Anjou (his French rival for the kingdom of Naples), that such ambitions were fulfilled. Alfonso transferred his court to Naples and it automatically became a meeting point for Spanish and Italian culture; the music on this disc reflects those times.

“Division-Musick” is a term used by Christopher Simpson during the 17th century to describe a typically English improvisatory style of diminution. Musicians generally used short bass melodies called grounds as the basis for intricate and virtuoso diminutions, beginning with simple and slow melodies over a bass melody, and ending with very fast and virtuosic diminutions after a varying number of repetitions of the melody. Both singers and instrumentalists practiced this art of diminution, but the preferred instrument for divisions was the so-called “division viol.” This CD aims to give some audible insight into English virtuosity in the Baroque era.

This important new release is ideally timed to celebrate composer John Joubert’s 85th birthday, which he celebrated in March. It was exactly five years ago, in celebration of Joubert’s 80th birthday, that SOMM brought out a well-filled double-CD set of music by John Joubert that included a world premiere of his Second String Quartet with the Brodsky Quartet, reissued on this disc as a companion piece to the world premiere recordings of Joubert’s Quartets 1 & 3, again with the same artists, who have now enthusiastically incorporated them into their concert repertoire.

TURRINI: 6 Harpsichord Sonatas, Op. Mangili, 1795 • 6 Harpsichord Sonatas with Violin Accompaniment, and a Fugue for Solo Harpsichord, 1784

The Sonatas of Ferdinando Turrini (1745–1829) are a precious testimony to the beginning of the sonata form in Italy. They are original, rich in interesting features, and attracted the attention of distinguished figures of the musical and cultural world, ranging from W. Beckford to A.B. Michelangeli. In the first half of the 20th century, several sonatas were published with the editing of eminent pianists such as S. Cesi, A. Longo, E. Marciano, and M. Vitali. This recording presents the first performance of two unpublished collections, Raccolta Mangili (1795) and Sei Sonate da Cembalo Coll’accompagnamento d’un Violino ed una Fuga in fine a Cembalo solo (1784).

Tebaldini was a many-sided personage, characterized by an outstanding talent and a very high moral stature. Thanks to his multifarious but always consistent activities—aimed particularly at the rediscovery of the glorious Italian musical identity—and thanks to his masterly, passionate theoretic and practical action against the decadence of liturgical music, he is one of the most enlightened figures in musical art and scholarship.

Harmonia Sacra

Selected choral works of Bortnyansky, Sarti, Galuppi, Varlamov, Glinka, Lvov, Lvovsky, Tchaikovsky, Lomakin & Rachmaninov

In Russia, despite the westward vision of Tsar Peter the Great by 1700, the repertory of the St. Petersburg Imperial Chapel Choir was still dominated by a style heavily dependent upon homophony. Stronger Western influences would be felt when central European musicians flocked to take up opportunities in Russia during the first decades of the 18th century.

“A virtuosic performance.” — Oxford Times

“A tour de force … an interesting program and flawless performance.” — Beat Magazine

Stone Records is delighted to announce the debut disc of the Phoenix Piano Trio. Released to coincide with their Wigmore Hall recital, this live disc was recorded last year, during the Trio’s “Beyond Beethoven” series in London and Oxford, which encompassed the entire Beethoven piano trio repertoire alongside five newly commissioned works. This all-Beethoven CD features the famed “Archduke” trio alongside the magnificent trio in E flat, Op. 70, No. 2, a work that is heard less frequently but shows Beethoven at his most reflective and imaginative. This repertoire is rarely encountered in a live recording, and the vibrancy of the performances is wonderfully captured on this disc by award-winning engineer Julian Millard.

From the liner notes: “It is difficult to resist the temptation, even in a clearly profane work such as this, to catch a glimpse of an image, at once clear and symbolic of Order and Universal Harmony. Never as in Bach have we the sensation that all Music is in reality a Sacred Art and that the tendency that Goethe will announce as the salvation of Man, or the hoped for union of Art, Science and Religion, has found in Bach’s work a prophecy fulfilled.”

REGER: 3 Chorale Fantasies, Op. 52 • 6 Trios, Op. 57 • Fantasy & Fugue in D minor, Op. 135b • 30 Little Chorale Preludes, Op. 135a

Max Reger is one of the major composers of the German organ school. He is greatly appreciated by Anglo-Saxon organists, but his music has been long looked down on by French organists. On this CD, Jean-Baptiste Dupont gives us a taste of Reger’s music with the first volume of the Complete Organ Works, the goals of which are to fill a certain discographic insufficiency, and to attract organists’ and music lovers’ attention to this music by the originality of the undertaking.

MAHLER: Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor

“Yakov Kreizberg was one of the finest conductors of his generation, a man whose musicianship, intellect, and integrity produced performances of a passion and intensity far superior to those by some better-known names.” — The Independent

The Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1856 and gave its first concert on December 14, 1856, with an ensemble of 15 musicians, at the Maison de jeux (a future casino). The orchestra’s most recent principal conductor was Yakov Kreizberg, who was named to the post in October 2007. He held the post until his passing in March 2011.

Pieces for the piano left hand by Blumenfeld, Bonimici, Bortkiewicz, Debussy, Dubé, Foote, Gabrilowitsch, Maasalo, Moszkowski, Ponce, Saint-Saëns, Sancan, Schubert, Scriabin, Sibelius & Zichy

Jean Dubé, 30 years old, is internationally recognized as one of the most important young pianists today, much appreciated for his musicality and power. He has been playing all over the world since he was four, and won his Steinway piano at the age of nine during the national competition “Young Mozart Prodigies in Paris.” There are already at least 30 recordings in his discography, of which at least 20 were released with Syrius and Naxos. He is one of the rare pianists in the world who is capable of playing Ligeti’s piano concerto, and—in the course of one recital—Messiaen’s “Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant Jésus.”

Liuwe Tamminga: organ, harpsichord

FRESCOBALDI: Il Primo Libro di Capricci (1624)

On this recording, Liuwe Tamminga celebrates the magnificent sound of some of the oldest surviving organs in Italy—the amazing organ made by Lorenzo da Prato (1471–1475), the Baldassarre Malamini organ (1596), the organ by Giovanni Cipri (1556), and a harpsichord by Giovanni Battista Giusti (1679). The Capricci adhere to a set of compositional features that allow for the expression of emotions through a more flexible treatment of the traditional counterpoint. Here, the rules could occasionally be broken or even ignored for expressive purposes; composers also encouraged rhythmic liberties (particularly tempo fluctuation), as Frescobaldi mentions in his preface to the Capricci. Liuwe Tamminga is considered one of the major specialists of 16th and 17th century Italian repertoires for organ.

Compared to several testimonies of people who have seen and heard Debussy perform his own works, it is surprising to notice how close Théodore Paraskivesco gets to the composer’s spirit—or at least the way we imagine it. The music flows naturally with mastery and spontaneity, and this fragile balance evokes the mystery of music and the musician’s anxiety.

This album presents Debussy’s works from 1891 to 1915 in a totally new light, with which he would have most certainly agreed. Wind instruments, to which Debussy dedicated the end of his life, are featured strongly on this recording.

Paul Gulda: pianoRóbert Gašpar Band

HAYDN: works of Haydn contrasted with traditional Hungarian gypsy music

Proceeding from Haydn’s oeuvre and the musical traditions of Hungarian and Slovakian Roma, this recording by versatile Austrian pianist Paul Gulda offers an impression of what Haydn may have heard in Esterháza around 1770, and what influenced his composition permanently. In congenial cooperation with Róbert Gašpar’s band, Gulda easily manages to demonstrate the similarity of originally very different musical styles, and to make their mutual enrichment palpable. In combination with works that were evidently influenced by Roma musicians, traditional melodies and Hungarian gypsy music are presented here in an authentic manner.

Organ works by Bossi, Guilmant, Hägg, Rheinberger & Yon

This celebration of the 150th anniversary of Bossi’s birth was intended to be a homage paid to this most renowned Italian organist and composer. DIEPENBROCK: Stage works, orchestral works, symphonic songs, orchestrated songs, choral works, songs

The year 2012 marks the 150th anniversary of Alphons Diepenbrock’s birth in Amsterdam, and the 100th anniversary of his acclamation, during the second Nederlandse Muziekfeest, as the most important Dutch composer since Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. The greater part of Diepenbrock’s music is composed for voices. Of his almost 100 separate compositions, there are less than five that use neither the human voice nor a written text. A text was so essential to the full musical effect of Diepenbrock’s music that it is hardly possible to imagine that someone could understand his works well without an equal understanding of the texts that he used. These texts were never chosen at random nor easily; they influenced and defined not only the general atmosphere of a song but also the significance of every modulation and every subconscious thought, for they defined the musical unity of the piece just as much as each separate musical phrase or its musical explanation.

The survival of the Leiden Choirbooks from the iconoclastic fury in 1566 seems to indicate that the manuscripts were carefully kept somewhere under lock and key in the church. Today, these choirbooks provide unique and extremely valuable proof of the rich musical life of 16th-century Holland. Even though musical practice flourished greatly in Dutch churches in 16th century, little evidence of this has survived in Dutch archives and libraries. Of the countless music manuscripts that were used by singers of the liturgical hours as well as others, only a fraction of these have survived the ravages of time.

Norwegian folk tunes & short works by Jensen, Rheinberger, J.S. Bach, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Walther, Sinding, Mason & Purcell

This sequel to the much-lauded Canto Ergo Sum features lovely songs performed by a brilliant boy soprano. The beautiful harmonies nurture peace of mind and impart consolation, warmth, and hope. This is a recording that seeks common ground between classical music and folk tunes. The breadth of the music Benjamin Isachsen has selected showcases his musicality, the quality of his voice, and his ability to express himself.

The CD contains the complete chamber works for saxophone composed by Paul Hindemith. The saxophone duet in three movements was written for the legendary saxophonist Sigurd Racher, but it was never performed during the composer’s lifetime. It is heard here in a delectable rendering by two of Norway’s leading saxophonists, Rolf-Erik Nystrøm and Vegard Landaas. The main work featured on the CD is the Trio for Tenor Saxophone, Viola and Piano. One would have to search far and wide to find more closely interwoven parts than these! In the CD booklet the listener will also find passages from a stage play entitled “Tre takter takk!” written by actor and author John Nyutstumo. It was commissioned by the musicians, and especially adapted to the music on the CD.
