Notes ON THE PROGRAM

Hallelujah, the strife is over is a tradi-tional Norwegian folk tune. The wordsare by Danish priest and hymn writerHans Adolf Brorson, published in 1739in “Troens Rare Klenodie” (“The RareJewel of Faith”). This version of the

tune is from Ola O. Fagerheim fromSauda. Fagerheim only used the lastverse, and would sing it during funer-als, as the coffin was lowered into theground.

JULIAN DARIUS REVIE Mass of the Divine ShepherdMass of the Divine Shepherd is a one-hour musical exploration of the figureof the Good Shepherd, unfolding asmelodic dialogue between adult choruswith orchestra and antiphonal chil-dren’s chorus with handbells. Betweenthese two stands the audience, a silentbut indispensable third voice, called toactive participation in the mysteries ofthat Shepherd who at once enfolds allin a universal and eternal embrace, andyet lays down his life for each, as if foreach alone.

This Mass is written in memory of mydear friend Dennis Stanton Avery, whopassed away in 2012. Dennis wasinstrumental in my coming to study atCambridge University, his alma mater.After his death, I was asked by theUniversity to write a piece for a memo-rial service held there in his honor. Irecognized from the start that withinthat piece—a setting of the 23rd Psalmfor tenor with organ accompaniment—lay the seeds of something greater;Mass of the Divine Shepherd is the ful-fillment of this artistic vision. TheMass remains centered around thistenor solo, now accompanied by fullsymphony orchestra and, for theCarnegie Hall première, 600 handbells.The sweeping, arc-like structure of theMass reaches its pinnacle at the end of

this solo with its supreme statement offaith: I shall dwell in the house of theLord forever.

The Mass begins with simple, chant-like melodies, sung first by the childrenand answered by the men of the cho-rus, before blossoming into a highlycanonic interplay, as though thesemelodies had sprung to new life, echo-ing through every corner of the hall.Just as sheep trust their shepherd asthey come to know his voice, so thisMass seeks to build a trust relationshipwith the audience by opening with nat-urally flowing, singable melodies. Asthe interplay between children, adults,orchestra, and handbells develops,these melodies lead us, as though bythe hand, as we embark into musicallyricher, more textured territory.

After the childlike innocence of theopening movements, the adults lead aproclamation of the Credo, driven andriveted with rhythmic intensity. In thismovement, the orchestra recapitulatesfragments of sacred music, from thechants of the first Christians to thehymns of our day, generating a cacoph-onous sonic whirlwind embodying afull two thousand years of music allwritten specifically for one Person,overlaid by a soaring statement of the

Resurrection. Relentlessly the menrepeat I Believe in God, hundreds oftimes in this movement—and finallythe children enter, superimposed uponthe adults’ closing life everlasting,singing only four words: I Believe inGod—once, slowly, decisively. Thisleads directly into the children’sresponse to the Creed, which is notsung at all, but played entirely withtheir angelic handbells, high in the bal-conies, bathing the audience in a gentlewash of soft, pure tones.

Then the tenor soloist begins: The Lordis My Shepherd, as the children’s bellscontinue through much of this move-ment. With the final word of thePsalm—forever—the movement doesnot really end, but rather, overlappingwith the next, elevates us into theSanctus, the chorus of Holy, Holy,Holy which we sing on earth as merereflection of the eternal song of praisein heaven that has been from the dawnof time and will be for all eternity. Inthe quietest moment of the Mass, thechildren enter pianississimo, singing amost delicate Hosanna which repeatsand echoes through the hall, reminis-cent of the supplications of the openingmovement.

The final movements, the Lord’s Prayerand Lamb of God, fix our gaze uponthe eternal, through a brooding,extended solo cello line, the rich yetgentle voice of a solo mezzo-soprano,and chant-like melodies sung by themen. Following the close of the Lord’sPrayer, marked in the musical score as“expansive, resplendent,” we return, inthe Lamb of God, to the purity and

vulnerability of children’s voices. Aseach part sings the same melody, but indifferent, slow rhythms, the children insix parts lead the adults into intricate12-part canon. This movement repre-sents unity in its fixed adherence to asingle, simple melody; yet by simulta-neously representing all rhythmic possi-bilities, it looks upward, outward,embracing the universal and the eter-nal. Indeed, it is through this model ofparadox that we hope to enter into thevery mystery of the Divine Shepherd:the eternal, omnipotent God becomeman; the Lord of all who leaves theninety-nine in the wilderness to laydown His life for the one; the Shepherdand the Lamb once slain who lives for-ever.

By choosing for his papal pectoral crossthe image of the Good Shepherd, PopeFrancis reminds us of the centrality forour day of Christ the Savior who,through his tender mercy, reaches outto all without exclusion. As we lookforward to 2016 as the Holy Year ofMercy, it is my prayer that Mass of theDivine Shepherd may draw us all into adeeper trust and confidence in ourDivine Shepherd, who is Love, who isLife, who is Word, whose sheep knowhis voice. For as St. Gregory Nazianzenwrote, “The Good Shepherd, who laysdown his life for the sheep, came insearch of the straying sheep to themountains and hills on which you usedto offer sacrifice. When he found it, hetook it upon the shoulders that bore thewood of the cross, and led it back tothe life of heaven.”

Mass of the Divine Shepherd—Theological Reflectionsby V. J. Tarantino

The image of the Shepherd is founda-tional within the Judeo-Christian tradi-tion, originating in Scripture anddepicted in the earliest Christian art.Julian Darius Revie’s Mass of theDivine Shepherd renews in modernidiom the beauty of this ancient devo-tion.

Marie-Dominique Chenu, a councilfather of Vatican II, postulated artisticworks as theological “sources.” Massof the Divine Shepherd stands as adeeply contemplative, intuitively theo-logical composition, with an artisticobjective of spanning and uniting aglobal musical culture in worship. Boththe product and the process of thiswork invite analogy to the EasternChristian tradition of icon writing, inwhich artistic creation is itself condi-tioned and ensouled by prayer, suchthat the art becomes a locus of the pres-ence of the divine.

Tonight, we gather in the name of theShepherd and so are we assured of hispresence among us. Necessary to anyencounter is dialogue; in Mass of theDivine Shepherd, repetition, imitationand canon are no mere device, butengender a colloquy among children,adults, and orchestra, each in a unifiedpersona. Moreover, Revie casts theaudience not as passive spectator, butas a critical, unnotated voice, a recep-tive co-creativity essential to the per-formed work.

The score as written makes use ofexpressive affective notations, drawingout the distinctive spirituality of thepiece; the musicians must take to heartsuch dispositional cues as “reverentlyjoyful,” or “awakening in radiantglory.” These notations presume avibrant interconnection throughout the

hall—an unspoken, contemplativedynamic between performer, audience,and the art itself.

Mass of the Divine Shepherd displays aBonaventurian architecture; threegroupings of three-movement sets nat-urally elide one to the next, recallingthe nine choirs of angels ordering thecelestial hierarchies. A unique choreog-raphy of the singers evokes this sym-bolism dramatically; the audience willexperience itself immersed in sound,compassed in harmonies, as the hallbecomes literally domed with angelicsonority, cascading gently over the peo-ple. In this way, the Children of Godmovement explores the possibilitiesinherent in a single, sustained C majorchord, falling pristine like a blanket ofsnow from above, yet lightly disturbedby repeated C minor sonorities ema-nating in dialogical counterpoint fromthe mezzo-soprano soloist on stage.

In the I Believe movement, a musicalclimax of the piece, the men begin bydroning “I believe in God” after themanner of the rhythmic monotonepriestly prayer of petition associated inearly Judaism with the end of Sukkot,the Feast of Tabernacles. As this chant,more entreating than avowing, per-dures, the orchestra enters with an his-torical compendium of sacred music—from ancient Hebrew plainchant whichJesus himself likely sang, passingthrough all of the ages of the Churchup to today—rising and swirling, lay-ered and overlapped. From there, thewords of the articles of faith are them-selves scrambled, thrown to the wind,as if to denote the ultimate failure ofpropositional truth unless animated bythe Holy Spirit with the substantiallysupernatural theological virtue of faith,and assimilated to the heart as love—

for St. Paul writes, if I have all faith soas to move mountains but do not havelove, I am nothing. As the Holy Spirit,represented in 32nd note quintuplets,comes to the fore, the conclusion of theCreed is overlaid with an echo of themen’s priestly credo—now in the voicesof the children, no longer as petitionbut as spirit-filled affirmation.

Mass of the Divine Shepherd culmi-nates in the Lamb of God, in whichRevie draws upon the full resources ofhis art to “break apart time” and“expand sonority into an infiniterealm,” to express through celestial,

ethereal ambience the mystic image ofthe Lamb focal to the Book ofRevelation, bringing time and eternityinto relationship. In the end, the incarnatevoice of the Shepherd, of the Lord ofthe Universe, is the delicate treble of atali—meaning, in the Aramaic of Jesus’time, both lamb and boy.

JULIAN DARIUS REVIE, Composer

Australian-Canadian composer JulianDarius Revie is Composer in Residenceof the Center for Music and Liturgy,Saint Thomas More Chapel at YaleUniversity. He was previously Organistat Lake Avenue Congregational Churchin Pasadena, California and at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Ottawa, Canada.

Born in Ottawa, Julian studied piano,organ and clarinet from an early age.He has been a weekly church organistsince the age of eleven. Julian holds adiploma in piano performance from theRoyal Conservatory of Music inToronto; degrees in Biochemistry andMolecular Biophysics from Yale andCaltech; and a Master’s in Compositionfrom Cambridge University, where hedirected the Choir of RobinsonCollege. His master’s dissertation,Unity and Uniqueness in the FifthMode Great Responsories: NewApproaches to the Multifaceted Layersof Plainchant Melody, is an analysis ofgroups of related plainchant melodies

that draws upon techniques used inanalysis of tonal music (specifically,Schenkerian analysis) as well as uponthe mathematical and computationaltools used in comparative geneticanalysis.

ØRJAN MATRE, Composer

Ørjan Matre was born in 1979 inBergen and studied composition at theNorwegian Academy of Music withBjørn Kruse, Lasse Thoresen, OlavAnton Thommessen and HenrikHellstenius. He has distinguished him-self as a distinct voice in Norwegianmusic, and has been awarded high-pro-file commissions by leading performers,ensembles and orchestras. The recentyears have included premieres atUltima Festival, Warsaw Autumn,Sound Scotland, Wittener Tage fürneue Kammermusik and DarmstadtFerienkurse. He received the Edvard

Prize in 2012 for his Clarinet Concerto‘Inside Out’. He was Composer inResidence for Oslo PhilharmonicOrchestra in 2013-2014. Matre’s big break came in partnershipwith Evan Gardner, Jan Erik Mikalsenand Jørgen Karlstrøm while several ofthem were still students, with the CD‘Lights Out’ with the Norwegian RadioOrchestra and its leader Rolf Gupta, arelease that caused quite a stir when itwas released in 2006. By 2003, Matrehad already written the orchestralwork “Attempted Birdhouse,” a titlethat alludes to Homer’s attempts atbeing a conceptual artist in an episodeof the Simpsons. Even if Matre allowshimself to play with the artist’s role, hismusic is rock solid and, on the surface,not strikingly humorous. Nevertheless,it possesses a timbre with a delicatetouch that could reveal influences fromcomposers such as Gerard Pesson; theensemble piece Atem serves as a goodexample of this. Like Pesson, Matreblends traditional influences with newplaying techniques, and through well-placed dynamic bursts the composeralso hints at a latent Nordic founda-tion, making it clear for the listener

From the home base of his tranquil“composer’s cabin” in the woods ofMonroe, Connecticut, Julian divideshis time between New York City andYale, where he frequently composes forand performs with soloists and ensem-bles. Julian is a winner of the CanadianMusic Competitions and a recipient ofa DAAD scholarship for study in

Berlin. His compositions for soloinstruments, voice, chamber ensemblesand orchestra have been performed inNorth America, Europe, and Australia,in venues including Lincoln Center andthe Sydney Opera House. In his freetime (which he is looking forward toenjoying after tonight), Julian enjoyshiking, tennis, skiing, and kayaking.

that his output is a multi-layered affair,with more aspects than justtimbre/philosophical experimentation.

Matre’s versatile skill allows him tocomplete commissions with great con-viction, one prime example being theorchestral piece “Händel Mixtapes”where Händel’s original compositionsgradually erode away and are assimi-lated by Matre’s work, a highly originaland inventive twist on post-moderncollage. Other works manifest them-selves as simple melodies with accom-paniment, where the overall contextleaves the listener in a position wherehe/she does not quite understand howone has ended up there in the first

place. Still, the works in which Matreapproaches the more abstract are theones that clearly shows his true charac-ter: his major chamber pieces, theensemble piece Atem as well as his theorchestra pieces. One can still oftenhear elements of tradition in Matre’smusic, a dance rhythm or fragments ofa melody, but they are drawn and sug-gested with such a delicate touch thatthey could almost arise as an odd coin-cidence, akin to seeing faces appear outof the woodwork of a floor. The mutu-al pull between the abstract and moreconcrete, albeit diffuse, “objects” is animportant part of Matre’s music, there-in this contradiction lies much of itsimmediate attraction.

RICHARD GARD, Conductor

Richard Gard’s musical activity is cen-tered at Yale University where he is theDirector of Music at Saint ThomasMore Chapel and Director of the Cen-ter for Music and Liturgy. Dr. Gard isalso a long-time member of the facultyat the Yale School of Music, and Direc-tor of Undergraduate and GraduateMusic Lessons for the University.

He has performed throughout Europe,Australia, and the United States butnow focuses his performing in the NewHaven area. He is the conductor of theNew Haven Ballet Orchestra as well asthe director of all vocal and chamberensembles at Saint Thomas MoreChapel. During his 50-year career hehas conducted church choirs, largevocal ensembles, studio back-up vocals,opera, musicals, concert band, orches-tral and chamber groups.

Dr. Gard also manages projects creatingdigitized music scores and music educa-tion applications, and is a co-inventoron patents for audio analysis and musiceducation interfaces. He is the ChiefAcademic Officer for Music ProdigyCorporation, a developer of music edu-

cation applications creating digitalcoaches and assessment tools for nota-tion reading, vocal training, elementaryguitar, elementary violin, sight singing,and ear training.

Dr. Gard earned his master’s and doc-toral degrees at Yale University Schoolof Music and holds membership in theAmerican Bach Society, the AmericanChoral Directors Association, the Asso-ciation for Technology in MusicInstruction and the Society for Chris-tian Scholarship in Music.

STEPHEN LAYTON, Conductor

Stephen Layton is the Artistic Directorand Principal Conductor of the City ofLondon Sinfonia. Layton guest con-ducts widely and has worked with theLondon Philharmonic, the Philharmo-nia, the Philadelphia Orchestra, theMinnesota Orchestra, the MelbourneSymphony, the Auckland Philharmonia,the Hallé Orchestra and Chorus, theRoyal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Lon-don Sinfonietta, the English, Scottish,and Irish Chamber Orchestras, theUlster Orchestra, the BournemouthSymphony, the Royal Scottish National,the Northern Sinfonia and Australian

Chamber Orchestras. He has collabo-rated with the Academy of AncientMusic, the Orchestra of the Age ofEnlightenment and the Britten Sinfonia,with whom he has recorded a widerange of repertoire including Handel,Bach, Bruckner, and Poulenc. For theEnglish National Opera, he conductedBach’s St John Passion in a stage pro-duction directed by Deborah Warner.

Stephen Layton is the Conductor ofPolyphony, which he founded in 1986.He has been Music Director of theHolst Singers since 1993. In 2006 hewas made a Fellow and Director ofMusic of Trinity College, Cambridge,where he directs The Choir of TrinityCollege Cambridge. From 1997-2006,he was Director of Music at London’sTemple Church, and from 1999-2004he was Chief Conductor of the Nether-lands Kammerkoor. From 2000-2012he was Chief Guest Conductor of theDanish National Vocal Ensemble.

A champion of new music, StephenLayton has premiered new works andrecordings with a number of composersincluding Arvo Pärt, Thomas Adès andJames MacMillan. His bold realisationof John Tavener’s epic seven-hour vigil,The Veil of the Temple - a new depar-ture in British music - was premiered in2003 at The Temple Church London. Itwas subsequently performed in 2004 atthe Royal Albert Hall during the BBCProms, and in the Avery Fisher Hall,New York, as part of the Lincoln Cen-ter Festival.

LUKE MCENDARFER, Conductor

Pianist and conductor Luke McEndar-fer has been on fire since his 2004appointment as Artistic Director of theNational Children’s Chorus (formerlythe Paulist Choristers). Under his direc-tion, the group has led numerousperformances with critically acclaimedinterpretations of Poulenc’s Gloria,Mozart’s Requiem, Lauridsen’s LuxAeterna and Madrigali, Fauré’sRequiem, Britten’s A Ceremony of Car-ols, Rutter’s Dancing Day, VaughanWilliams’ Mass in G minor, Casteln-uovo-Tedesco’s Romancero Gitano,Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Dvo�ák’sMass in D, Copland’s Old AmericanSongs, and Handel’s Messiah, the latterwritten up as “the best performance inmany years” in Overture, the Musi-cian’s Union official publication.

His ambitious and innovative planshave resulted in major program expan-sion taking the organization bicoastal,forging a reputation for excellence andadventurous programming. To date,his world premiere conducting perform-ances include works and arrangementsby Grammy-nominated Morten Laurid-sen and Emmy-winner Stephen Cohn,while current commissions include newmusic by Nico Muhly and Daniel Brew-baker. Heavily invested incollaboration, Mr. McEndarfer has pio-neered unique performancerelationships that have culminated inconcert appearances with the Los Ange-les Philharmonic, the Los AngelesOpera Company, the Los Angeles Mas-ter Chorale, the Joffrey Ballet, theKronos String Quartet, the StephenPetronio Dance Company of NewYork, Musica Angelica BaroqueOrchestra, and Josh Groban.

Equally at home in the studio as well ason the concert stage, Mr. McEndarferhas worked on several motion picture

soundtracks, most recently on Para-mount Pictures’ 2009 feature filmImagine That, starring Eddie Murphy,where McEndarfer selected, arranged,and conducted sections of the score, andalso appeared as the Music Teacher onscreen. Television credits include con-ducting performances in the musical acton Jay Leno’s former Tonight Show.

Passionately committed to music educa-tion, Mr. McEndarfer has vowed tomake the National Children’s Chorusan incomparable resource for youthmusic education in Los Angeles, NewYork City, and Washington, D.C., offer-ing rare, cutting-edge training, as wellas once-in-a-lifetime performance expe-riences to musically gifted children.Through his inspired vision, theNational Children’s Chorus has grownto offer its students university-level con-ducting instruction, Kodály technique,music theory, advanced ear training andcomposition study. With a strong con-tingent of supporters, McEndarfer hasled the National Children’s Chorus con-fidently into a class of its own,significantly enriching the lives of youthdaily on both coasts.

Since the age of six, Mr. McEndarferhas studied piano extensively, winning

competitions and musical honors withthe Music Teachers’ Association of Cal-ifornia. He is also a two-time graduateof UCLA, holding a Bachelor of Artsdegree in English literature and a Mas-ter of Music degree in conducting, thelatter with full scholarship under thetutelage of Donald Neuen. vately, McEndarfer has been the pupilof Kenneth Kiesler and MariannePloger at the University of Michigan,Lucinda Carver at USC, Susan McClaryat UCLA, and Paul Salamunovich. Cur-rently, he resides in New York City, andtravels to Los Angeles and Washington,D.C. weekly.

Hannu Norjanen (b. 1964), previouslyworked with the Tapiola ChamberChoir as a guest conductor in therecordings of the complete choralworks of Jean Sibelius and ToivoKuula.

Norjanen graduated from the SibeliusAcademy in 1997 with diplomas inthe organ, choir conducting andorchestra conducting. He studied withJorma Panula, Eri Klas, Atso Almilaand Ilya Musin, and he further studiedchoral conducting with Eric Ericson inStockholm.

He has been the artistic director of theCantores Minores boys’ choir since2005 and the Helsinki PhilharmonicChorus since 2007. He also teaches atthe Sibelius Academy. He conducted theAmici Cantus male choir from 1990 to1997, the Finnish Philharmonic Chorusfrom 2003 to 2006, the LappeenrantaCity Orchestra from 1998 to 2001 andthe Vaasa City Orchestra from 1999 to2006. In 2012 the Diocese of Helsinkiawarded him the title of directormusices.

In addition to performances in Finland,Hannu Norjanen has appeared as aguest conductor in the Baltic States,Russia, the Czech Republic, Hungary,Spain, Great Britain, Turkey and USA.He has conducted productions of theoperas The Magic Flute by Mozart, LaBohème and Tosca by Puccini, LaTraviata and Falstaff by Verdi, L’elisird’amore by Donizetti, Tuntematon soti-las (The unknown soldier) by TaunoPylkkänen, Isänmaan tyttäret (Daugh-ters of the fatherland) by IlkkaKuusisto, and The Fairy Queen by Pur-cell.

HANNU NORJANEN, Conductor

HÅKON DANIEL NYSTEDT, Conductor

Grandson of the Norwegian composerand conductor Knut Nystedt, HåkonDaniel Nystedt (born 1980) grew upsurrounded by choral music. He studiedboth piano and violin from an earlyage, and became the regular conductorof his first choir at 17. In 2000, hebegan his studies at the NorwegianAcademy of Music, where his abilitiesas a conductor were soon recognized.While there, Håkon, whose main con-ducting instructors were Grete Pedersenand Ole Christian Ruud, entered a spe-cially designed program from his thirdyear, focusing on conducting and com-posing. At his exam concert from theNorwegian Academy of Music, Håkonconducted Antonin Dvorák’s Requiemmass with the Norwegian RadioOrchestra, resulting in a national TVbroadcast and the receipt of the orches-tra’s own prize for young and aspiringmusicians.

In 2009, Håkon commenced a specialcourse of study in Denmark for conduc-tors, where he received supervisionfrom Giancarlo Andretta, GiordanoBellincampi and Michael Schönwandt.Hakon’s participation in the programwas extended an extra year, an honorreserved for especially talented stu-dents.

Håkon has been appointed Chief Con-ductor and Artistic Director for boththe Oslo Chamber Choir and the Nor-wegian contemporary music choirGinnungagap, two of the most presti-

gious choirs in Norway. Even beforelearning about Grete Pedersen and OsloChamber Choir’s experiments withNorwegian folk music, Håkon had anidea about using this particular way ofsinging in a choral setting. He hasdescribed his relation with the choir asmore personal and deep than with anyother ensemble he has worked with.Håkon is deeply involved in decidingand developing the choir’s repertoire,arranging music for the choir, anddeveloping connections with musicalcollaborators.

As an orchestral conductor, Håkon hashad engagements with, among others:Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra; BergenPhilharmonic Orchestra; Aarhus Sym-phony Orchestra; Trondheim SymphonyOrchestra; Tromsø Symphony Orches-tra; Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra;and South Jutland Symphony Orchestra.

David Skinner is a renowned scholarand director of the award-winningvocal consort Alamire(www.alamire.co.uk). He was co-founder of The Cardinall’s Musick in1989, and has also worked with manyother leading early music groups in theUK including The Tallis Scholars, TheSixteen, the Hilliard Ensemble and theKing’s Singers. An engaging presenter,David has worked extensively for BBCradio, appearing in and writing a vari-ety of shows on Radio 3 and 4. Heacted as music advisor for the Musicand Monarchy series on BBC 2 withhistorian David Starkey; he andAlamire appear in the first two episodesof the series. He has published widelyon music and musicians of early TudorEngland and has an excellent reputa-

tion as an editor of performance scores.David’s edition of the complete TallisPsalter was published by Novello in2012 and was well reviewed, receiving5 stars in Early Music Today. The fol-low up to this collaboration, TheGibbons Hymnal was published inMarch 2014. David is also workingwith the King’s Singers on a series ofearly music recordings, the latest beingPalestrina’s Biblical Passions.

David is Fellow, Praelector, and OsbornDirector of Music at Sidney Sussex Col-lege, University of Cambridge, where heteaches historical and practical topicsfrom the medieval and renaissance peri-ods. He directs the Choir of SidneySussex College, with whom he hastoured and made highly acclaimedrecordings. David is frequently invitedto lecture, lead workshops and coachchoirs throughout Europe and the USA,and is noted for his refreshing andentertaining approach. Most recently,he gave a lecture on Tallis’ life for Mar-tin Randall Travel in Canterbury inNovember 2013, and will be lecturingand giving masterclasses throughoutthe USA, UK, Italy and Spain in 2014-15. He is currently preparing ancollected edition of Tallis’s early Latinworks for Early English Church Music(Stainer & Bell) for publication in2016.

DAVID SKINNER, Conductor

Rick Wood has been leading handbellchoirs for thirty years, and for manyyears served as a church musician atFirst Church of Bethlehem, CT, along-side colleague Ruth Ann Leever. Rickhas conducted local and state handbellfestivals and has led handbell work-shops throughout New England.

In 2011, Rick and fellow ringers trans-formed the church handbell choirs into a

non-profit community music organiza-tion, Chime In! Music With a Mission,Inc. with a goal to “engage people in thejoy and sense of community that musicfosters through participation and per-formance.” Ringers from Bethlehemhave delighted many audiences through-out New England with lively concerts.

Over the past decade, many student choir members at Saint Thomas More Chapelhave gone on to establish music ministries modeled on our own in their new homeparishes. Inspired by their work and dedication, the Board of Trustees of SaintThomas More Chapel established the Center for Music and Liturgy. This majorinitiative, begun in 2014, lends formal structure to an ongoing mission: To createand nurture excellent music for the world-wide Church. This is accomplished byproviding:

NEW MUSICNew Catholic music by living composers, including our Composer in Residence;free editions of masterpieces and beloved hymns which have been curated andreturned to the public domain; the Cloud Hymnal: an interactive hymnal and songresource, accessible free on any mobile device.

OPEN ACCESSMusic and instructional software, available free to the world; performance andrehearsal opportunities for church musicians; Yale student interns trained andcommissioned to lead music in parishes; free music education software for all whowish to sing well; outreach and availability to those who might otherwise not haveaccess to such materials or opportunities.
