Merry Christmas from your council

Come celebrate Christmas in style

the Moreton Bay Region

an even better place to

live, work and play.

Council appreciates your

input and involvement in

our programs and we look

forward to celebrating this

special time of year with

you and your loved ones

at one of the Moreton Bay

Region’s many upcoming

Christmas events.

Mayor Allan Sutherland, Councillors and staff of Moreton Bay Regional Council wish all residents and visitors to the region a very happy and safe Christmas.During the past 12 months council has worked closely with residents and community groups on a wide range of local projects and initiatives to help make

Three free major Christmas celebrations will be held at Caboolture, Redcliffe and Strathpine, with plenty of family entertainment including Santa, fireworks and carols.

As Moreton Bay Region gears up to celebrate Christmas, Caboolture’s brand new cultural facility, the Hub, will open its doors.

Division 1

Local youth can hone their boarding skills over the summer holidays at a new skate park in Alice Street, Donnybrook. Council is also planning an upgrade to the playground along Toorbul Esplanade (near the boat ramp) with new pathways, shelters and playground equipment.

Division 2

A sculpture is being installed at Beachmere, overlooking Deception Bay at the end of Main Street. The four-metre tall twisted steel sculpture, Oxygex, draws its inspiration from its beachside surroundings and will complement beautification works already completed in the town’s community recreation areas.

Division 3

New lighting and footpaths have now been installed along Norfolk Esplanade at Caboolture, on the southern side of the Caboolture River. More lighting work is planned for the nearby car park. On the northern side of Caboolture River, Esme Street is now much smoother since about 500 metres of the street and its adjoining car parks received a new asphalt surface.

Division 4

The picnic area at Osprey House Environment Centre is getting a facelift, which should be finished in time for Christmas, weather permitting. The centre at Dohles Rocks Road, Griffin, will receive new picnic tables, stone walls, seating, pathways and landscaping.

Division 5

Improvements to Scarborough Beach Park are set to be finished by Christmas. New playground equipment, picnic shelters and pathways will be installed and the car park upgraded.

Division 6

A seat in the shape of the old Hornibrook Bridge is being commissioned as part of Redcliffe Museum’s 10th birthday celebrations. Council has drawn up plans for the seat, which will use timber from the old bridge and feature replica pylons at either end. When completed, the 3.5 metre long seat will become a fixture at the museum.

Division 7

Sweeney Reserve at Petrie, which was damaged in the January floods, is now open. Council has carried out some minor repair work on the park’s internal road and picnic area. New bins have been installed and a off-leash dog area has been temporarily fenced ahead of the holiday season.

Division 8

Council is planning to replace the footbridge across Four Mile Creek at Gympie Road next year. The new footbridge will improve safety for students who access the nearby Pine Rivers High School.

Division 9

Council is replacing playground equipment at Lang Park (Hedge Street, Strathpine) and John Leitch Memorial Park, (Max Court, Albany Creek). As part of the planned replacement, council is asking residents for their feedback so the new equipment meets the needs of local children.

Division 10

The Cabbage Tree Creek bikeway and footpath will soon help link Ferny Hills to Everton Hills. Council is currently working on three sections of bikeway – a 285-metre path from Francis Road to behind Bunya Road linking Everton Hills to Arana Hills, and two smaller sections near John Street and Cabrilla Street. When complete they will create a continuous 6.5 kilometre path featuring three tunnels, creek crossings, seats for rest stops and connections to two neighbourhood shopping centres.

Division 11

Both lanes of Mt Nebo Road, near Jollys Lookout, are open now that council has completed the majority of repair work following damage caused in the January floods. Council is now working on some additional rockfall protection measures in the area.

Division 12

Road rehabilitation work was recently completed at Bartholomew Road, Alcock Road and Mansfield Road at Elimbah; and Anderson Road, Morayfield. Similar work is now under way in Clark Road and Robbs Road at Morayfield.

Moreton Bay Regional Council is building the infrastructure our community needs to grow.

Here’s a snapshot of some of the projects under construction or recently completed in your neighbourhood.

Markets and recycled goods

With Christmas fast approaching and a Presentlisttofill, atripto the markets may help youfindthatspecialgift.

Most of the Moreton Bay Region’s markets provide entertainment as well, so make it a day out for the family. From the traditional to the quirky, bargains can be found for everyone.

Details of local markets can be found by typing markets into the search engine of council’s website www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au

Another great place to pick

up a bargain – and also breathe some new life into a pre-loved item – is at one of council’s treasure markets.

A wide range of goods at bargain prices is usually

available at council’s two treasure markets at the Dakabin and Caboolture Resource Recovery and Waste Management facilities, open Friday to Sunday 8am to 1pm.

Green light for Burpengary intersection Bridge works at DayboroBurpengary commuters are now benefiting from the completion of the upgrade to the intersection of Uhlmann and Buckley Roads.

The $3 million project has improved safety with

additional traffic signals

and new street lighting.

Work also involved

relocating electricity, phone

lines and water services

underground.

Council thanks residents

and road users for their

patience while this major

project was constructed.

Preliminary work is about to start on the replacement of the Williams Street Bridge in the heart of Dayboro.

The existing bridge is

nearing the end of its

useful life and council has

arranged for the relocation

of telecommunications, electricity and water services with relevant agencies.

The preliminary work, which is expected to begin early next year, will make way for the construction of the new $1.5 million crossing (pictured) in mid 2012.

AJ Wyllie bridge progress

The flash flooding in January 2011 caused considerable damage to the bridge which crosses the Pine River.

The reconstruction project will be carried out by the State Government’s Department of Main Roads, which is responsible for the bridge.

Council looks forward

to the completion of the

project and appreciates

the patience of residents

affected due to the

bridge’s reduced capacity.

Variable message signs

are being used in both

directions to advise

motorists of changes to

traffic conditions.

The State Government is expected to begin work early next year on the construction of the new northbound section of the AJ Wyllie Bridge at Gympie Road, Petrie.

Work has begun on a $300,000 project to repair bank erosion at Beachmere Lake on Biggs Avenue at Beachmere.

Timber retaining walls will

be repaired or replaced

as part of the project. The

work follows the installation

earlier this year of water

aerators as well as a

monitoring study of the tidal

exchange system in the

lake.

The improvements will help

ensure the lake remains

an important community

recreational space as well

as a habitat for fish.

Council is investigating what kind of community centre would best serve The Hills District over the next 20 years.

The need for a new centre was highlighted in a region-wide study into what community infrastructure would be necessary by

2031 to serve the region’s

growing population.

The Hills District is

predicted to increase to

up to 25,000 residents

by 2031, and while the

existing Dawson Parade

Hall serves current needs,

an additional centre will

help accommodate the

future needs of a larger

community.

Summer safetyCheck off the following items and you’ll be well on your way to being prepared for a safer summer.

• Signed up for MoretonAlert. The new council alert system provides residents with text message, voice message, email, internet and social media alerts about local flooding events during natural disasters and major North Pine Dam releases. Registration is free and can be done online at www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/MoretonAlert

• A fully charged battery operated radio which receives 612 ABC radio, 101.5FM or 99.7FM so you can keep up to date on potential road closures, evacuation centres and other important information

• An emergency kit in a safe, accessible location that contains a battery operated torch and radio and a supply of fresh batteries, a first aid kit, candles and waterproof matches, a waterproof bag for valuables and important documents, and an emergency contact list. A big plastic container with a sealing lid makes an ideal

emergency kit holder.

• Family members knowing safe evacuation plans that include the family pets

• A list of emergency contacts where every member of the family can see them

• Leaves and rubbish cleaned out of gutters and downpipes

• A clean yard with loose items secured and waste taken to the tip

• All potential mosquito breeding sites checked for ponded water and emptied. Don’t forget to check flower

pots, old tyres, palm fronds and tarpaulins over boats

• Tree branches trimmed so they are away from the house

New fire laws for Moreton Bay RegionRegion-wide local laws about lighting fires are now in place.

While you can have a properly prepared barbecue, fires should not be lit in the open if you are on a suburban house block (any allotment less than 3001 square metres).

Fires can be lit from 7am until dusk on properties larger than 3001 square metres if the material being burnt is under two metres long, wide or tall and the fire is at least 6 metres from every property boundary and dwelling.

Residents proposing to light a fire must advise all neighbours and a responsible person must be in attendance until the fire is extinguished. Fires should never create a smoke nuisance.

Larger fires will require a permit from your local QFRS fire warden. There are Fire Danger Periods which restrict the lighting of fires,

and during those periods, permits are required. More information about Fire Danger Periods may be found at www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au

As an alternative to burning, residents may dispose of green waste of up to three cubic metres per load at no charge at council’s transfer

stations and landfill sites.
