buying windows

New windows can add tremendous curb appeal to your home, which is great if you are considering selling. If you plan to stay in your home, new windows and doors increase comfort and add a touch of beauty and elegance, while helping you save on energy bills.

Select a contemporary or classic design based on the architectural style of your home.

PVC windows are durable, resistant to moisture and corrosion, energy efficient, and virtually maintenance-free. They feature fusion welded multiple chamber frames to ensure energy efficiency and comfort for your home, and come in several operating styles.

Love wood, but hate the upkeep? With metal clad wood windows, you can enjoy the warmth of a stylish wood interior combined with the benefits of a low maintenance metal clad exterior.

Create a statement by upgrading from PVC to our award winning Metal Clad PVC windows. The composite frames combine aluminum cladding with a high performance PVC frame for superior strength, durability and energy efficiency.

Learn about the features of the various wood and PVC windows in this product guide to help you choose the right window for your home.

1. Choose your Texture: Wood vs. PVC

Before you choose your window style and glass option, consider the direction of your home, note your climate zone, then decide the kind of performance you require from a window.

Windows on the East or West side of your home will get the most direct sunlight throughout the year. If your home faces South or West, remember that no Low-E glass coating will completely eliminate heat build-up, it will only reduce or retain the heat, depending on the season.

Casement windows are the most energy efficient opening windows, however for a more traditional look, try a double hung window. Picture windows bring the outdoors in and add loads of natural light, but they are not a great choice if you want to enjoy a summer breeze.

To expand an area in your home, consider a bay or bow window. It will transform the entire appearance of both the interior and exterior of your house.

2. Choose your Window

This is where your imagination gets to play! Remember that there are different options for wood and PVC windows.

Have fun choosing your brickmould. Be bold or subtle; the choice is yours.

Select your grille pattern and colour. Different patterns create different effects. Some window styles have the option of simulated divided lites. You can select the width profile and colour that suits your home. Check out our Virtual Solutions tool on our website to see the effect of combining varying patterns and colours.

Next, select your hardware for all opening windows. Our Encore range features a folding handle which reduces interference with curtains and blinds. We also offer an optional multi-locking system for added security.

how to recognize

valuein windows and doors

goodvalue

Choosing a window or door is not exactly an open-and-shut case. With thousands of products to choose from, how do you recognize good value?

Look for products that have been tested and certified to relevant performance standards. Products certified under CSA International’s Windows and Doors Certification Program will carry the CSA mark. To ensure that you are buying CSA certified products, request a written contract from the supplier.

The operational performance ratings for certified products are based on CSA International’s CSA A440-00 Window Standard, the Canadian General Standards Board CGSB 82.1 Sliding Glass Door Standard, the CGSB 82.5 Insulated Steel Door Standard, CSA A440.2-04 Energy Performance of Windows and Other Fenestration Systems, and CSA A453-95 Energy Performance Evaluation of Swinging Doors.

This article can be found at CSA International’s website at www.csa-international.org/consumers/consumer_tips/ default.asp?load=window_doors.

valuePerformance Ratings

The standards allow for several levels of performance for:

• air tightness (A)

• water tightness (B)

• wind load resistance (C)

• forced entry resistance (F)

• screen strength/ease of operation (S/E)

• condensation resistance (I) (optional)

• energy rating (ER) (optional)

Air Tightness (A)

Performance is indicated by a number rating from A1 to A3.

The higher the number, the more airtight the product.

WindowsSlidingDoors

A1 A1

A2 A2

A3 A3

Insulated steel doors are tested on a pass/fail basis and do not receive a graduated rating.

Water Tightness (B)

Performance is indicated by a number ranging from B1 to B7 for windows, and from B1 to B4 for sliding doors.

The higher the number, the more watertight the product.

WindowsSlidingDoors

B1 B1

B2 B2

B3 B3

B4 B4

B5

B6

B7

Insulated steel doors are tested on a pass/fail basis and do not receive a graduated rating.

Wind Load Resistance (C)

There are up to five levels of wind resistance for windows (C1 to C5) and three levels (C1 to C3) for sliding doors.

The higher the number, the better the performance.

WindowsSlidingDoors

C1 C1

C2 C2

C3 C3

C4

C5

Insulated steel doors are not tested for wind load resistance.

Forced Entry Resistance (F)

For windows, an F10 rating means that the window meets the standard level of resistance to forced entry. An F20 rating indicates that the window has achieved a higher level of resistance to forced entry.

All sliding doors must have a lock or latching device. An F10 or F20 rating indicates that the product has passed forced-entry resistance testing.

For both windows and sliding doors, an F20 rating indicates better performance than F10 rating.

Screen Strength/ Ease of Operation (S/E)

For windows, a number rating ranging from S1 to S2 indicates screen strength.

They are tested for tear, damage or retention when subjected to loads. Please note that insect screens are

not intended for any purpose other than to keep insects out.

For sliding doors, a number rating from E1 to E3 indicates ease of operation. They are tested based on the force required to open and close the moveable section of the door.

S2 is stronger than S1. E3 requires the least amount of effort.

WindowsSlidingDoors

S1 E1

S2 E2

E3

These tests do not apply to insulated steel doors.

Condensation Resistance (I)

Condensation resistance for windows and sliding doors is determined by a thermal characteristic called Temperature Index (I), which ranges from 40 to 80. The higher the number, the more likely the product will resist condensation.

Insulated steel doors are tested on a pass/fail basis and do not receive a graduated rating.

Energy Rating (ER)

The performance rating for energy efficiency in windows, sliding doors, and insulated steel doors is represented by the letters ‘ER’.

An ER rating for windows and sliding doors is derived from:

• Solar heat gain

• Heat loss through frames, centre and edge of glass

• Air leakage heat loss

• The addition of a constant +40 ER number

ER numbers range widely depending on the type of window and design options. For example, fixed windows score better ER ratings than operating windows.

ER ratings for operating windows and sliding doors typically range from 5 (indicating weaker energy performance) to 40 (higher energy performance). Fixed windows can be designed to have positive ER numbers ranging from 15 to 45.

A typical ER rating for insulated steel doors with wood frames is -13.

Who is CSA International?

CSA International tests products for compliance to national and international standards, and issues certification marks for qualified products. The CSA mark assures consumers that a product has been evaluated by a formal process that involves examination, testing and follow-up inspection, and that it complies with applicable standards for safety and performance.

All Weather Windows products are all CSA certified.

Choosing the right glass for your home

Good design and correct installation are important factors in ensuring that your windows are energy efficient. However, glass performance is the biggest factor that determines the overall energy efficiency of a window. Before choosing your type of glass, it is important to understand the effect of the sun’s energy.

During winter the sun’s lower elevation means the sun’s rays shine through the windows and

help warm your home thereby reducing heating costs. In summer, the sun is higher in the sky and there is less direct sunlight hitting your windows due to shading and the sun’s angle in the sky.

By adding a glass coating to your windows, you can maximize your solar gains. Low solar heat gain (LSG) glazing allows a small portion of solar energy into the house and is ideal in summer because it helps to reduce the cost of cooling your home.

Did you know that up to 35% of a home’s heat is lost through its windows? Since heating a home accounts for over half your energy bill, it is important to find ways to reduce these costs.

5%

Equipment15%

Water Heating

22% Heating56%

High solar heat gain (HSG) glazing allows a large percentage of solar energy into a home and is most beneficial in winter when the heat provided by the sun reduces the demands on your furnace.

Research from Natural Resources Canada indicates that HSG glazing is a more energy efficient option for our cooler climate because we spend more money each year on heating than we do on cooling our homes. In fact, only 2% of residential energy use is spent on air conditioning whereas heating accounts for 56%.HSG glazing does not block ultraviolet (UV) light as effectively as LSG, because it allows more solar heat to pass through the window. If you choose HSG glazing, consider installing blinds to block out the sun’s rays and keep your home cooler in

summer.

Another solution is to plant trees along the south and west sides of your home, as well as near an air-conditioner to increase energy efficiency. Choose deciduous trees which will shade your home from the sun during hot weather so you rely less on fans and air-conditioning, and will allow the sun’s rays to reach your windows in winter.

Low-E Glass

All Weather Windows offers both LSG and HSG glazing. The HSG option is called Low-E (low emissivity) which is a special type of glass that has been coated with a microscopic layer of metallic atoms, making the

glass more resistant to heat transfer without affecting the look or feel of the window.

It reduces the amount of heat loss by deflecting it back into the room and allowing passive solar gain.

SunStop Glass

The LSG glazing option is SunStop, which is a second layer of Low-E coating that helps control heat gain when natural shading is not available. SunStop filters out more light and UV to keep a room cooler in summer and reduce furniture fading.

The Right Balance

It is important to strike a balance so you always benefit from the sun’s free solar energy. We recommend putting SunStop glazing on South and West facing windows, and use Low-E glass for the balance of the house.

Noticeable Improvements

In winter, the glass surface will be warmer because Low-E reduces the amount of warm air escaping. You will notice reduced condensation, fewer down drafts, lower heating costs and better overall comfort in your home.

In the summer, cool air inside your home is retained as the Low-E coating reflects re-radiated heat from outside, keeping the air cool on the inside.

When combined with Tri-pane glass, a Low-E coating offers 35% to 105% better insulation than standard clear glass.

How does Low-E affect energy bills?

Simply replacing your windows and doors with ENERGY STAR® qualified products can reduce energy bills by up to 12%! Not only will you reduce your heating and cooling costs, you will

also reduce your greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, 12% equates to an annual reduction in a household’s greenhouse gas emissions of nearly three quarters of a tonne.

Is Low-E expensive?

Low-E only adds about 10% to the cost of an average window package. SunStop costs a little more.

Low-E vs. Alternatives

Our Clear Low-E sets the industry standard in terms of passive solar heat gains and insulation ratings (U-Values). No other coating has a greater impact on reducing heating bills and improving the overall comfort of a home.

Comfort E-PS™ is a new innovative glass that combines passive solar heating with thermal insulation to reduce energy consumption and heating costs. It emits more natural light compared to clear glass and harnesses the sun’s free energy to help reduce heating bills by up to $150 annually.

Our Low-E coatings also meet the stringent ENERGY STAR® ratings.

zone rebates

Plans are afoot to update and change Canada’s climate zones because of the growing awareness of our environment, and the need to take constructive steps to protect our planet.

Building codes across Canada have been amended to meet ENERGY STAR® requirements. Standards will be raised in the future so that improved U and R Values (insulation ratings) will be required on all windows. This means that some windows that qualify now, will no longer be acceptable without upgraded glazing for better U or R values.

So what’s the low-down?

The proposed plan for 2009/2010 is to move Zone B standards to Zone A, shift Zone C to Zone B, and Zone D to Zone C. A tougher new standard will be introduced for Zone D, the northern most zone. ENERGY STAR® ratings will then vary even more between Canada and the U.S.

If you are renovating or building a new home, ensure that the glazing you

choose meets one climate zone higher than the one you presently live in. This will ensure that your home meets future ENERGY STAR® qualifications. Remember that when you exceed the ENERGY STAR® requirements for your zone, you will save even more on energy costs.

Work with your builder or contractor about these potential tougher regulations, particularly if you are building a home. An ENERGY STAR® approved window is required in order to achieve the ENERGY STAR® qualifications for New Homes status. This label could affect the resale value of your home.

The All Weather Windows Research and Development team is working to ensure our windows will continue to meet the new climate zone requirements as the reclassifications occur.

ENERGY STAR® Approved Because energy efficiency is important, All Weather Windows is proud to manufacture products that carry the ENERGY STAR® label, the trusted symbol for energy efficiency. Money is not all you are saving; you are helping to protect the environment.

Argon Gas Special features such as Argon gas is combined with Low-E glass coating to increase energy efficiency and improve the insulation value of your windows. Argon gas is used to fill the space between panes of glass, which are called “sealed units”. Argon gas which is non-toxic, nonreactive, clear, and odorless is heavier than air. It is inert — only moving under pressure — and so minimizes convection currents which can occur inside the sealed unit. On cold winter days, this reduces the tendency for windows to collect frost starting at the bottom of a window gradually moving upwards, as the Argon gas evenly distributes the temperature inside the sealed unit.

Dual Clear Glass Dual clear glass means your window has 2 panes of glass with no special coatings applied to the glass. The dual panes of glass are spaced about 1/2 inch apart, and the air in between the two panes of glass acts as an insulation barrier, making your windows more energy efficient.

Tri-pane Even better than dual pane is Tri-pane glass. Tri-pane features 3 panes of glass, each spaced about a 1/2 inch apart, providing even more insulation power than dual pane. Tri-pane also has excellent sound barrier characteristics, giving you added privacy and energy efficiency.

Brickmould The brickmould is on the outside of the window or door and enhances your home’s exterior appearance. It attaches to the frame and makes the overall window appear larger. The brickmould also covers the gap between your home’s exterior (siding or brick) and the window frame.

Grilles Grilles are decorative bars placed on the surface or between panes of glass. You can customize your windows by using different grille patterns. Grilles are available in different colours and width profiles.

Jamb The interior side components of the window frame are referred to as the jamb, or jamb extension.

SDLs – Simulated Divided Lites SDLs are applied to both the inside and outside of the window to add character to a home by appearing to divide a continuous pane of glass into smaller units. We use aluminum SDLs on the exterior of the window and either wood or PVC on the interior (depending on your window choice). SDLs are available in various colours.

Emissivity The relative ability of a surface to reflect or emit heat by radiation. Emissivity factors range from 0.00 to 1.00 and are typically measured in a U-Value (or its inverse, R-Value). The lower the emissivity, the less heat that is emitted through a window system.

our style

20 glossary

Page 21: All Weather Windows

glossaryER-Rating An ER-rating is derived from solar heat gain, heat loss through frames, centre and edge of glass, and air leakage heat loss. The combined effect is measured in number of watts per square metre and is either positive or negative. A positive number represents a net heat gain and helps in reducing the home’s heating costs. A negative number indicates that the product loses more energy through heat loss and air infiltration than it gains in solar energy absorbed from the sun (i.e. the home’s heating system has to work harder in colder weather).

ER-numbers range widely depending on the type of window and design options. For example, fixed windows score better ER-ratings than operating windows. Operating windows and sliding doors typically have a negative ER-number, ranging from -30 (indicating weaker energy performance) to -5. Fixed windows can be designed to have positive numbers ranging from -20 to +10.

Passive Solar Heat Gain Solar heat that passes through a material and is captured naturally, not by mechanical means.

Relative Heat Gain A calculated relationship of heat gain (through a window system) that accounts for centre-of-glass U-Value and centre-of-glass shading coefficient based on a standard inside and outside temperature.

R-Value Measures the resistance of heat transfer through the glass. The higher the R-Value, the better the window insulates.

Shading Coefficient A glass measurement comparing solar heat transmission, related to 1/8 inch clear glass.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient Measures the ratio of solar heat gain through a window system compared with an unobstructed opening.

U-Value A measure of the rate of nonsolar heat flow through a material or assembly. The lower the U-Value, the greater a window’s resistance to heat flow and the better its insulating value.

Visible Light Transmittance The percentage or fraction of the visible light spectrum that is transmitted through the glass of a window or skylight as reduced by the sash material and reluctance of the glass.

HyDistinction Hybrid windows feature the convenience and energy efficiency of PVC on the inside with the durability of aluminum cladding on the outside. The clip-in common mullion design boosts CSA water tightness performance to a higher sustainable level by eliminating fasteners in the mullion, and therefore, the need for caulking or sealants.

Maintaining the 1/2 inch air space ensures the optimum performance of the sealed unit. Triple weatherstripping on casements and awnings ensure wind and rain are kept outside where they belong.

Additional features include multi-lock, exterior brickmould with integral nailing flange, and an optional perimeter frame assembly bracket.

To manufacture the best metal clad wood windows in the industry, we start with premium quality softwood.

The gentle curves and grooves of our WeatherGard Metal Clad Wood window’s interior provide a natural canvas that readily accepts stains, paints, and varnishes.

Innovative design complements the outstanding aesthetics. Overlapping roll form sash cladding offers a truly effective seal. Joinery is sealed using rubber gaskets that won’t break down over time. The wood sash and frame is protected against all forms of moisture using non-thermal conductive vinyl liners under

the sealed unit and under the sash on casements and awnings.

Extruded glazing stops and gasket seals keep out cold air and water, making WeatherGard Metal Clad Wood windows as comfortable as they are beautiful.

pvc windows

All Weather Windows offers an extended lineup of PVC windows that present an attractive combination of energy efficiency, low maintenance, comfort and value. Choose a window series constructed with either a heavy framed, individual box window system, or one using an

ingenious common mullion system that eliminates fasteners in the window frame’s drainage path.

Innovative designs and unique features set our PVC windows apart. Set back glazing on many product series provides better structural strength and also

improves thermal efficiency and water management by reducing window exposure. An internal, sloped bridging design ensures water drains to the outside and our PVC drip lip forces water to drip straight down, away from your wall.

By positioning the glass at the centre of the wall, we have built a warmer window. The inside temperature of the 6500 Titan PVC window is warmer with the sash moved to the interior. By bringing the window in closer to the inside wall, the circulation of room air against the window has improved. This helps reduce condensation by providing better ventilation at the inside of the window.

V-weld is the technology of the future and All Weather Windows is proud to be one of the first manufacturers in North America to launch this innovation. Apex was designed and engineered for V-weld and we are excited to introduce this ground-breaking technology.

V-weld basically eliminates the need for Box-to-Box construction, and mechanical mullions will soon be a thing of the past.

Since all joints are welded together, there is no need for gaskets or silicone to seal the windows. The V-welded mullion virtually eliminates air and water leaks from combination windows. With a V-weld, each window opening performs as an individual window even though V-weld windows are built in combination.

V-welded windows are also easier to install, offering an advantage to dealers and contractors.

All Weather Windows has adopted this technology that allows for significant improvements in the structural integrity of windows. Windows constructed using a V-weld deliver the highest structural performance figures.Comparative testing with temperature variation ranging from -30ºC to 68ºC was conducted on windows with mechanical mullions and V-welded mullions.

Results have shown that contraction and expansion of the mechanical mullion led to a deterioration at the point of contact between the mullion and the window frame. This deterioration allowed for a significant increase in airflow and therefore a reduction in the performance of the window. These test results demonstrate the advancement V-weld brings to the window manufacturing process and the increased performance consumers can expect.

By virtually eliminating air and water leaks, All Weather Windows products using V-weld stand alone in performance standards.

3Front Entry Doors Steel and Fiberglass Front Entry Doors Strong Arm II

All Weather Windows’ complete door line is ENERGy STAR® approved.

The Barrington Fiberglass door collection defines a new level of luxury in fiberglass entry systems. Barrington’s distinct raised moulding and outstanding wood grain

texture, reminiscent of hand-crafted hardwood doors, impart unbelievable warmth and elegance to any home.

All Barrington doors are factory-glazed with

a stunning, proprietary collection of specialty decorative glass. By combining dramatic decorative glass with impressive raised moulding and detailed wood-grain texture, our Barrington Door

Collection presents a new dimension of luxury in fiberglass entry doors.

All Weather Windows boasts one of the most diverse front entry door lineups in the industry. Wood grain textured fiberglass, smooth fiberglass, and insulated steel doors, combined with sidelites, transoms and countless door lite possibilities.

Strong Arm II doors offer more than just

good looks. They are built to withstand whatever mother nature can throw at them.

Seams and joinery on our doors are sealed with gaskets, instead of messy caulking that can break down over time. Our posts are made from manufactured wood to give extra strength and eliminate

warping.

Our new door sill features a one piece design that prevents water infiltration when properly installed. The two piece design commonly used in the industry is vulnerable to leaks at the point the two pieces are joined. In addition to our one piece design, the new sill features a drip lip to protect the

area under the sill by forcing water away.

Strong Arm II door frames incorporate a common frame construction with multi-combination post, resulting in a stronger, more versatile frame. Metal cladding on door posts and jambs are available in our 7 standard colours.

Internal Blocking Lock area is reinforced with a block providing a solid mounting surface.

True Square-Edge Design The square-edge design of fiberglass offers an attractive wood door appearance and permits easy field matching.

Deep Wood Grain Texture The unique deep wood grain texture yields a very realistic wood-like appearance and allows for easy finishing.

Enhanced Stainability Unlike the multi-coat staining or painting that wood requires, a fiberglass door can be fully stained in about 1 hour.

Fiberglass Doors

1. High Performance Fiberglass Facings Specially engineered fiberglass facings provide maximum protection and durability. Fiberglass is dent resistant and resists splitting, cracking and warping.

2. Glass Inserts All decorative glass inserts feature a triple pane 1” insulated assembly. Double pane insulated inserts and flush-glazed frame designs are also available.

3. Engineered Stiles Hinge and lock stiles feature laminated lumber providing excellent dimensional stability.

4. Polyurethane Core Rigid polyurethane foam, meeting strict environmental guidelines, provides maximum thermal protection and dimensional stability.

5. Rot-Resistant Bottom Rail A high-performance, composite material is utilized on all bottom rails, giving excellent rot-resistance.
