SAINT JOSEPH PARISH WAKEFIELD MA
Dear Parishioners, This Friday, November 1, we celebrate the feast of All Saints. It is a holy day of obligation. Our Mass schedule can be found on the front cover of this week’s bulletin. This is a feast where we celebrate all those who are saints in heaven enjoying the fullness of life with the Lord. This is the vocation of every person - to be saints - to be friends with God. As a Church, we celebrate certain days for those who have been canonized, such as St. Theresa, St. Patrick, St. John the Baptist, and all the other “big names.” The feast of All Saints is for all the everyday men and women who lived a life that was faithful in the ways of the Lord. These are people such as mom and dad, grandparents, friends, and neighbors. May we live in such a way so that when we die, we will join them in the kingdom of heaven.
On Saturday, November 2, we celebrate the feast of All Souls. This is a day to remember our beloved dead, especially those who are in the process of purification in Purgatory. This day is a good reminder for us to remember to pray for the dead. Our prayers and sacrifices may hasten this process and help them enter eternal life in heaven. We can offer a Mass, say a rosary, give alms to the poor, and offer up any suffering that we experience. May all those who have died enjoy eternal rest in the embrace of the Lord. We will be having our Mass of Remembrance this Saturday, November 2, at 6:00 p.m.
For your information, there was an interesting survey released recently by Pew Research.
26% of American adult population identify as nones, a group composed of atheist, agnostics and irreligious.
20% claim to be Catholic.
Those professed to be nones surged in one decade from 17% in 2009 to 26% in 2019. During the same period, the adult Catholic population fell from 23% to 20%.
Republicans jettisoned Christianity at a rate of 13% over the past decade, 31% of Democrats swelled the ranks of nones. The overall Christian population fell from 77% to 65%.
The survey also broke down the dwindling Christian membership of past generations as follows:
Silent Generation (born 1928-45) 84% Christian Baby Boomers (1946-64) 76% Christian Generation X (1965—80) 67% Christian Millennials (1981-96) 49% Christian
As you can see, we did a makeover of our parish bulletin. We hope that it is easier to read and navigate. I will be available for confession this Tuesday, October 29, from 12:30 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs. God love you,

FAITH FORMATION
The Greatest Pitfall in Married Life
Even if it’s true that at the heart of a couple is the desire to make each other happy, it’s also true that this noble inclination competes for first place with the natural instinct of self-preservation. At mealtime, quite naturally, a small child does not think of his brother first. Rather, he sees him as a competitor, almost a threat. The same is true in the life of a couple. In us, the need to be loved, understood and received is naturally stronger than the need to give oneself and receive the other. The relationship between spouses is a true mutual gift, a place of great joy. But at the same time, it necessarily contains small imperfections, which sometimes cause us inevitable frustrations. Let’s not forget that we’re still on the earth, a place of learning. We’re not yet in heaven. Instead of letting these imperfections become causes of annoyance, let them remind us that our spouse is not the source of our joy. They’re not even supposed to be. They’re only a sign that such a source exists. Your spouse, in all their beauty and imperfections, may be for you a sign that simply reminds you that the true source of peace exists, but that it’s in God. How many people abandon their homes with the illusion of finding in another person the happiness that their spouse could not provide? Perhaps they’d not been told that humans don’t work like that. Happiness is the fruit of having loved, of having given oneself faithfully, knowing that the source of joy is not in another human being, but in God.
~ Excerpts from Fr. Paul Habsburg, Aletia.org
Reflection of the Week
The more we feel we are owed,
the less able we are to be grateful for what we have.
Spiritual Teaching
Laughter, THE BEST MEDICINE
The pastoral associate, the associate pastor and the pastor are taking a shortcut to a meeting. As they walk through a vacant lot, the trio stumbles on an ancient oil lamp. On a lark they rub it, and to their amazement a genie appears and offers to grant them each one wish. The pastoral associate cries out, “I want to be on an island paradise, lolling in the sun without a care!” The genie waves his hand and she disappears in a puff of smoke. The associate pastor jumps up and says, "I want to be walking through the halls of the Vatican, marveling at all the artwork and never have to go to another meeting as long as I live.” He too disappears. Scowling, the pastor says to the genie, “I want those two back in time for the meeting.”

St. Joseph Inner Healing Ministry Forgiveness Workshop
This workshop will focus on how when we forgive, we give ourselves the gift of life. How forgiveness frees us from the past and allows us to be fully present in the now. In this workshop you will develop a deep understanding of forgiveness in the following areas:
What is forgiveness? Why Forgive? How to Forgive
There will be a time of group prayer and quiet soaking prayer. Father Ron will be available for confessions. We will hold a morning and an evening session. Choose the one most convenient for you.
