STEWARDSHIP-SHARING OUR

TREASURE WITH THE COMMUNITY

Campaign for Human Development is the Recipient for November

The Charitable Giving second collection on November 14

and 15, 2015 will support the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, CCHD. The CCHD is an instrument of the Catholic Church working to carry out the mission of Jesus Christ, “to bring good news to the poor…release to captives…sight to the blind, and let the oppressed go free.” (Luke 4:18). Established in 1970 by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, CCHD has a two-fold mandate: 1) to help low-income people participate in decisions that affect their lives, their families and communities 2) to provide

education and promote understanding about poverty and its root causes. CCHD invests in the dignity of people living in poverty. Programs funded by CCHD support self-sufficiency and self-determination for people who are working to bring permanent and positive change to their communities. CCHD is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty by funding community programs that encourage independence. We are essential to its success. Our generous donations will give those in poverty the support they need to make lasting changes. Together we can make a difference in families and communities across the United States. Cash, coin, and checks are welcome or give online direct from your bank account or credit card. Checks are to be made out to St. Gabriel the Archangel Church with “CCHD” written in the memo section. Visit the parish website to give online. Please be generous.

HEALING MASS Father Jim Livingston will celebrate a Healing Mass on Tuesday, November 17, at 7:15pm in the church at St. Joseph campus. Please join us for the Rosary and Mass. Direct questions to Barb at (952) 933-8423.

Parish News

Dear Parishioners, One of the joys of being a pastor with a school is visiting the classrooms. I try to visit the middle schoolers every month or so, and they have great questions. One theme that comes up a lot in their questions is the afterlife. What is heaven like? Do people get bored there? Will my dog be there? What about mosquitos? All very good questions. One thought that comes up every so often is, “Someone told me that heaven will be whatever we want it to be.” You’ve probably heard that before, too. On the surface, it sounds great. Heaven is supposed to be paradise, right? Well your idea of paradise might not be the same as my idea of paradise. Maybe you want the equivalent of lying on a beach for all eternity, while I want a never-ending perfect round of golf. So if heaven is going to be paradise for everyone who is there, then maybe heaven will be whatever we personally want it to be. It sounds good, but it suffers from the same problem that our fallen world suffers from: it puts our selves, our will in the center. “Heaven is whatever I want it to be.” Where is the focus there? On me. What do I want. What do I think will make me happy. Those who have this kind of attitude have to ask the question: where does God fit in to my understanding? What is His will? That question – what is God’s will – is the question that helps lead us to holiness, that helps lead us to sainthood. If we care about that question, what is God’s will, then we are pointing in the direction of heaven. God’s will is that we empty ourselves. God’s will is that we love Him with all of our heart. God’s will is that we love

our neighbor as ourselves. God’s will is that we sacrifice our own wants and desires in order to serve those around us. Those who are in heaven now, the saints that we honor with this weekend’s solemnity, are there because they asked that question during their lives here on earth, and did their best in performing God’s will in their daily lives. The problem with focusing on ourselves and our own will is that it makes the world so small. How little and petty we become when our comfort, our pleasure, our wants and desires take precedence over everything else. What a small world that is. Even the best, most wonderful heaven we can think of that is focused on us and our own desires are nothing compared to when we open ourselves up to the love of God. God’s love for us is infinite. When we open ourselves up to Him and say, “Whatever you want Lord. Thy will be done,” then we are opening ourselves up to love that is unimaginable. We can get a taste of that infinite love while we are still here on earth. We do not have to wait for heaven before we can start experiencing its joys. God wants to share His love with us right now, and He will do so if we are willing to put our sins and our attachments behind us, and live our lives for Him. “What will heaven be like?” It’s a good question. Heaven will be like loving God with your whole heart, loving your neighbor as your very self, and receiving that love in return. Let’s start now. Let us live as our brothers and sisters lived who are experiencing that love and joy already. Let us live lives of love. –Fr. Liekhus

November 1, 2015 The Solemnity of All Saints

MATTHEW 5:1-12a We all have heard Matthew’s Gospel reading of the Beatitudes many times over. The Beatitudes are like a well-worn poem or an endearing piece of music that plays over in our minds and it is so familiar that we know the reading when we begin to hear it. Even though I have heard them read many times, I can never remember what action goes with what reward. If you are meek do you see God or is that when you are clean of heart or vice versa. And to complicate it even more there are nine Beatitudes in Matthew and in Luke 6:20-26 there are only four, but then Luke adds four “Woe to you’s. Matthew makes a point of addressing the meek, the merciful, and the peacemakers, but Luke leaves these

out. So how are we to reflect on all of this? There is a reason that the Beatitudes are read on All Saints day. In both Matthew and Luke, Jesus states that we are blessed if we are persecuted for our actions that are done on his account. The actions do matter of course but perhaps the list was not all inclusive. Perhaps the list was meant to point out just a few of the ethical actions and attributes of the saints and the prophets who have gone before us. Maybe the most important thing is that we acknowledge God in our actions. Do we acknowledge that we are God’s children and realize that our actions reflect on our Father? Do we stand firm with our Father in heaven even when the way gets difficult? In the Beatitudes, Jesus was acknowledging that the way would not

be easy but that there would be reward at the end for those who stand firmly with him. He is also giving his personal blessing to us whose actions include but perhaps are not limited to mourning, peacemaking, and being merciful. When you do something in solidarity with Jesus and the saints, can you picture in your mind’s eye, Jesus saying to you “Blessed are you?” Questions for reflection: Do you have a favorite saint? Who

and why? How might we show the world that

we belong and stand with God? Have you ever hesitated to share

your belief in God? Why? Which of the beatitudes strikes a

chord with you?

Youth Formation, School & Parish News

FAITH FORMATION NEWS ADULT ASSISTANTS STILL NEEDED TO WORK WITH CHILDREN We need additional adults to assist with our 1st – 4th grade children. Could you help one or more times each month as an assistant? You would be responsible for keeping the children engaged with the activities and helping them move between our learning stations. NO prep work is required outside of our class time! Please contact Cindy to help ([email protected] or 952-540-4762).

NURSERY AT ST. JOSEPH AND ST. JOHN—COMING SOON! There will be a nursery service offered during all Masses at St. Gabriel. We need ADULT and TEEN volunteers who can love and care for children during one Mass time each weekend; consistent help is a plus, but we can work with your availability too! We especially need help at the 4:30pm and 8:30amMasses. This is a great service project for any Confirmation students or other school youth interested in serving others.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD (CLOW) VOLUNTEERS NEEDED This is a great ministry to get involved in if you love children and love sharing the Good News of Jesus with them! AND the time commitment is minimal! You’re going to be at Mass anyway, so why not jump in and help

our children grow in their understanding of Scripture? We need two leaders for the Saturday 4:30pm Mass and another assistant for the Sunday 8:30am Mass. Can you help? Training and support are provided. Call Cindy to get started (952-540-4762).

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH Sr. High youth are invited to the Lifeline event at the NET Center on Saturday, November 7, 5:00–10:00pm. Join more than a thousand youth for this exciting evening featuring a dynamic Mass experience, powerful praise and worship music from the band Sonar, and an inspiring talk from Fr. Mike Schmitz on “The Crux.” (There is a “moment of truth” in every person’s life, but there are also “moments of truth” that we face every day. In those moments, what we choose will make all the difference. The reality is that insignificant decisions matter. What kind of decisions will you make that make you?) Fr. Mike is a sought-after speaker for youth and we are fortunate to have secured a few tickets for this sold-out event. If you want to participate, let Cindy know now ([email protected] or 952-540-4762). We will carpool to the event together (meet at St. John at 5:00pm); bring money for a dinner stop at a fast food restaurant.

MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH, GRADES 5-8 This is a night just for YOU! It’s our first Saturday Night A-Live! on

Saturday, November 14, 6:00- 10:00pm. We’ll get started with a pizza dinner, then launch into a Game Show Blitz that will feature four popular game shows (Minute to Win It, Wheel of Fortune, Win, Lose, or Draw, and Family Feud). Of course, you’ll have the opportunity to win a FABULOUS PRIZE with each game, not to mention some lovely parting gifts. Also ,included in the evening will be time for praise and worship, ice cream sundaes, and door prize drawings. Cost for this event is $10.00. Don’t miss out! Get your permission slip turned in by November 9. Friends are welcome too! Adult help is also needed. Call Cindy if you can help (952-540-4762). Volunteers will need background checks, Virtus training, and a current signed Code of Conduct.

FIRST RECONCILIATION PREP FOR 2nd GRADE CHILDREN All children in 2nd grade or older who want to participate in First Reconciliation prep this year will meet on Sunday, November 8 and Sunday, November 15 from 6:00–7:15pm at St. John campus school in the music room (you can enter at the Boyce St. school doors, then go downstairs). Parents will attend parent presentations in the cafeteria after dropping off their children.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
