5:30 pm – 8 pm This superhero adventure will help your
family discover the qualities and strength that make us truly heroic in God!
This is not your typical VBS.
We’re asking you to come as a family, eat as a family, worship as a family, and experience the lessons and fun-filled
activities together.
From June 14 through June 17 about 360 United Methodist churches participated in the 33rd Annual Session of the California-Pacific Conference in Redlands California. In addition to pastors Joseph and Karen, I was joined from NUMC by Martha Ruiz, Jeff Brockway, Steven Klotz and Ric Wilson. Amybeth Lake was representing the North District UMW. Nancy Easterly attended as my guest.
For Bishop Grant Hagiya’s first Cal-Pac Conference, the theme was “From Here to There” with the primary goal of revitalizing the local churches. After over ten years of decline in membership and attendance throughout the United States and Western Europe, our local churches need to find out “our Why” in our souls. Why is Northridge UMC located in our community?
Every church needs to reach out to its neighborhood:
We need to bring 10 new people to Christ every year.
We need to increase average attendance by 10% every year.
We need to meet our church apportionments to the conference every year.
And we need a vision of who God calls us to be in our neighborhood.
Bishop Grant Hagiya also shared his vision for a “transformation” of the Cal-Pac Conference. Using a foundation of God in Jesus Christ through Holy Spirit, we will:
Transform Christian Leaders through leadership development and leadership excellence
Transform Lives through disciple making and Christian spirituality
Transform Vital Congregations through church revitalization and new faith communities
Transform the World through global missions, especially in our communities.
The format of the Annual conference included:
Inspiring worship services daily incorporating a variety of music and a variety of messages from both clergy and laity.
Clear messaging on the Bishop’s vision from churches and laity organization which have already begun these transformations.
Challenging business sessions on worldwide UMC constitutional amendments, as well as Cal-Pac Conference recommendations, resolutions and rules changes.
A memorial service, a retirement service, and a commissioning and ordination service recognizing Cal-Pac United Methodist clergy and their families.
This was the first Cal-Pac Conference for most of us and we thoroughly enjoyed not only the formal meetings, but also the opportunity to talk with old friends, to make new friends and to establish valuable contacts for our challenges ahead. Many of NUMC’s former pastors were at annual conference and they all sent their greetings to you. Thank you for this opportunity to represent NUMC at annual conference and we hope that you will talk to all of us in the weeks to come. – Mike Easterly

Thank You! Fred Rohde, Gretchen & Bruce Keeler, Dorine Collins, Joann DeSantis, Barbara Stiles, Jeri Barricklow, Coriolis & Lourdes Koch, Nancy & Mike Easterly, Wayne Aller & his niece, Carine Shashaty and Pastor Karen – our wonderful Dinner Hosts for June at SFV Rescue Mission. The beef tacos, beans, rice and watermelon were a big hit with the families we served. We had a wonderful time preparing, serving and cleaning up - but the best time was sharing our meal with all of the families and getting to know each other. Pastor Karen personally invited each family as our guests at NUMC Family VBS in July. We already have our dinner hosts for July’s spaghetti dinner. SFVRM is blessed to have a beautiful facility with a commercial kitchen and a spacious dining room. We will be inviting the families to come to NUMC for Sunday worship and Sunday school. After an August break, NUMC will be hosting dinner at SFVRM on the second Tuesday: SEPTEMBER 12 OCTOBER 10 NOVEMBER 14 DECEMBER 12 Contact Mike Easterly if you have a group that wants to take the lead for a specific date or if specific dates are good for you personally.
Kiva exceeds $1 Billion in Loans In 2005 Kiva pioneered crowdfunding by connecting people worldwide through lending to alleviate poverty. Soon thereafter, NUMC Church and Society through the leadership of Ted Barricklow became one of the early lending teams.
Since joining Kiva as a lending team, NUMC Church and Society has coordinated: Raising $1,048 in funds Making 205 loans to individuals and groups in 41 countries Making the equivalent of $5,150 in loans (loaned - repaid - re-loaned)
Take time to talk with Ted, Amybeth Lake, Joann DeSantis, Teresa Priem and other members of Church & Society about this successful outreach. Let them know if you want to help grow the funds available for future loans.

Our members in need What do you think when you see the names of our members on the screen who need our prayers each Sunday? Some of them are there because they have a near-term health concern, some because they are homebound or in a long-term care facility. What would it mean to these dear ones if each Sunday everyone took one name and sent them a card? Our Senior Ministry Team is working on being more active at keeping in touch with these people. Would you be willing to help us be a more caring, outreaching congregation by sending a card or making a phone call?

“We want to thank you for your prayers, sympathy, cards, notes and phone calls after the death of our father, Marvin C. Witt on June 8, 2017. He lived a full life of 93 years.
Words cannot express how much we appreciate all your support. At his request and that of my brother’s, there will not be a memorial service. Instead his
wishes were that a contribution be made to the charity of your choice in his name. Thank you again” – Mike and Beth (Witt) Sullivan, Brian Witt
Church and Society Movie Night On July 10, 2017, at 7:00 p.m., Church and Society will screen "The Eagle Huntress," a story Aisholpan, a 13-year-old Kazakh girl from Mongolia, as she attempts to become the first female eagle hunter to compete in the eagle festival at Ulgii, Mongolia, established in 1999. She belongs to a family of nomads that spend their summers in a yurt in the Altai Mountains and their winters in a house in town. The men in her family have been eagle hunters for seven generations, and she wants to follow in their footsteps. The movie was nominated for several awards when it was released in 2016. The film's dialogue is in Kazakh and the narration is in English. The movie is rated G and has a running time of 87 minutes.
Eat Out Monday Monday, July 10, 2017 (11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.) Maria’s Italian Kitchen 9161 Reseda Blvd, Northridge in Vons Shopping Center. Help Raise Funds for Family Ministries! You must take the flyer with you. “Dine In or Take Out”
Caregivers/Grief Support Group The First Sunday of Each Month at 11:15 am in the Library One of the gifts we offer to our congregation is a support group for caregivers and those who are grieving. The group meets once a month on the first Sunday at 11:15 am in the library. As one journeys down the path of grief you may feel you’re wandering in a dense fog – uncertain of what lies ahead of which way to turn. You may wonder if you’ll ever see the sun again. Then all at once the fog lifts and you are on the road to healing. The sharing of the experience with others in a similar, but not the same, situation helps each person to work through this difficult time. All are welcome and Sally Taylor is available for questions.
