THE ALICE & TED MAGAZINE

The summer has ended. The beach in the natural reserve is deserted. But the shining sun and the absence of wind makes it a beauti-ful Saturday morning. The kids are running out of the car and head for the path leading to the beach. Dad is carrying the backpack and has to run to keep up with the eager kids. They cross the large beach and stop by the water. Take off the shoes. Take off the pants and socks.

Ok kids, but keep your sweaters on and remember that we didn’t bring any change. Running on the beach with the feet splashing water, dad takes the opportunity to sit down on a stone and poor a cup of coffee. Soon the kids, who need to warm up the feet in the sun and fill up with some energy, join him.

On the beach there is an old fallen tree that quickly becomes a whale that needs to be

climbed. The flat stone right next to the tree is now the only safe place. The beach becomes an ocean full of octopuses, sharks, and even sea scorpions. With only fishing rods they have to battle against these sea beasts. One moment dad is an octopus, the next a provider of fishing rods. This goes on the entire morning.

“With only fishing rods they have to battle against these sea

beasts.” The shining sun, the view over the calm archipelago, a couple of playing kids. It is so simple, yet so beautiful. At this time nothing else matters. There is nowhere else I’d rather be.

THE ALICE & TED MAGAZINE

We are the parents of two lively kids, Vincent-4 1/2 and Lilly 3. They are very ener-getic and we constantly drag them outdoors to play in the snow, in the forest, on the beach, in the garden etc. We got frustrated that none of their clothes withstood their games. It didn’t take long before they were torn or ripped. Also we were amazed with the poor fit of some clothes. A lot of them are designed to expose their lower back as soon as they are not stand-ing at attention. We needed to find clothes for our kids to play in. We couldn’t find any. We also want to question how things are done in the industry and to show custom-ers another way, to challenge peoples ”buy and throw” culture. We are a small company and we are avoiding the big company systems of doing things. Mass production, lead-times, and the retail thinking made us realize that this is not how we want to do business and be in business. We have worked in the outdoor apparel business for about a decade. Even though we

have been part of fantastic products, it has always been a compromise between product quality and production price. Get a cheaper fabric, get rid of one pocket, we need to sell x amount to be able to get the price down. We began to question and had to re-think the traditional cycles of development, production and distribution. We want to make honest products with no compromises. Get the best materials we can afford, work with the best manufacturers and the best suppliers, and all this in a sustainable manner. We want the customer to know where the product has been made and of what materials. The fast paced mass production indus-try was not something we wanted to be a part of. Usually in all retail clothing companies most of the mark-up goes to the middlemen, the retailers, and to the big corporation that has to satisfy its shareholders. We want to put you, the end customer, first, before ourselves. We want to invest back in the company, mak-ing the best products possible.

The WAY To A GARMenT

THE ALICE & TED MAGAZINE

1. idea An Alice & Ted product starts with an idea based on a need. Since we are our own typical customers we ask ourselves what we are looking for in children’s clothing. Inspired by our kids, their friends, users, and environ-ment an idea sparks.

2. Design The designer starts by doing some sketches. Inspired by the need the design is taking form with paper and pen.

3. Tech Pack The finished design is digitalized in order to communicate with suppliers and fac-tory.

4. Pattern A pattern maker creates a pattern with different size gradings for the design, based on the tech pack.

5. Fabrics & Details Fabrics, zippers, and other details are

carefully handpicked to match the style and quality of the product.

6. Prototypes A series of prototypes are produced. After every prototype comments and adjust-ments are made in order to make the garment in a wanted way.

7. Tests Test users use the prototypes. Is the garment moving and behaving in the desired way? Can it be used in the wanted elements?

8. Preproduction sample A final preproduction sample is pro-duced. This is what the final garment will look like. This is the one we photograph and show to you.

9. Production We now produce the garment in a desired quantity. The garments are shipped to our warehouse and ready to be sent to you as soon as you place an order.

We source the best factory that special-izes in what we are making. If it’s authentic, if it’s real and they’re the best at what they do, then our product will also be the best it can be.

We want to develop great relationships with our suppliers and partners, so they be-come our friends and fun people to work with. The idea is to share and support, be open, honest and reliable. We need to involve the producer to achieve the best possible product.

We only work with European factories and suppliers. This is because we want to keep everything close to ”home” for quality and environment benefits.

We are only working with producers who have real passion and pride in what they do, and who will take pride in also working with us.

sustainability It is important that we leave the earth in a good condition for our kids so they can pass it on to the next generation in their turn. This is what we do to limit the impact on our earth. Today our earth is in deep need of more friends and we want to do as much as possible to do as little damage as we can on this planet. That’s why sustainability is very important for us. We want our children and their children to be able to enjoy our fantastic nature as much as we enjoy it now.

ethical Production We choose carefully the partners we like to work with. Not only are our co-workers people we like working with, but they share our view on environmental consciousness. We have an overview of the entire produc-tion, from fabric production to transportation of final garment to customer. We have all our suppliers close to us in Europe and they share our view on ethical production. Reduce the need to Consume The basic concept of Alice & Ted is to make durable clothes. We choose durable fabrics and material and design the garments with e.g. enforcements to make them last a long time. We want the clothes to be used for years and hopefully passed on to younger kids. By using quality clothes that last longer, the need to consume reduces.

Reducing Chemical impact We work with supplier that make bluesign® certified fabrics. The bluesign® standard considers all inputs, processes and technologies at their source. Through this so-called input stream management, chemical components containing critical substances can be handled in a safe way. Minimizing Waste First hand, Alice & Ted buys fabric that is overproduced. If it is absolutely impossible to find a desired quality, then we produce a new, environmentally friendly material. Organic/ Recycled / Certified fabric We only use materials that are environ-menally certified and/or organic and/or recy-cled or and/or biodegradable.

We believe in long-lasting and quality prod-ucts. Whether we are talking about our furniture, books, or clothes, it’s a waste of resources if they are poorly made. We design clothes for our own children who love to climb, run, slide, and just play. They need durable clothes that don’t rip after their first downhill slide or are to tight to move around in just because it’s a ”girls fit”. Children should be able to play and explore the world. Playing is necessary to develop their mo-tor skills, balance, creativity, and basic abilities. Our goal is that everything we do, should be the best thing we have ever done. We work hard to make our products outstanding. Sustainable and ethically made: All our clothes are made of carefully sourced recycled or environmentally friendly fabrics in a factory with a safe environment. The garments are constructed to be extra durable. Fabrics, seems, and making

allow the children to play in them over and over again. We want our products to be handed down to siblings, friends, or relatives. Playwear: The function driven design and high technical fabrics liberates and facilitates when playing. The engineered construction supports chil-dren to develop their motor skills, balance, crea-tivity, and basic abilities. The pieces are versatile, designed for all seasons and many activities, and can be used all year round in many environments and weather conditions. We want all kids to focus on being free, have fun, explore, to be full of energy and life. Value: Alice and Ted makes clothes that are great value for your money. We are selling all our garments online and don’t need any middle hands. We can therefore afford to use higher quality fabrics, threads, and making in our clothes. We are a small organisation with a small overhead and can put more back into good quality garments, timeless pieces that will last forever.

Unisex: We are not putting the garments in a gender stereotypic tray. We are not telling you what color you should buy or which fit the clothes should have based on your child’s gender. Our clothes are for all children, girls and boys like to play as much. Our pieces will allow them to be themselves and to help them grow their own per-sonalities. All Season = No Season. We want to elimi-nate seasons and offer summer and winter gar-ments all year round. New items arrive throughout the year.

Carefree: The garments can all be machine washed. The clothes are made to maintain their look and feel efter use and wash. It should be easy, NO drycleaning needed, wich is much better for the environment. Service & Direct Delivery: We can com-municate directly with you and give you the best service possible. Our direct communication will help us learn from you and help us make the best playwear there is. We know that you want whats best for your little ones and so do we.
