Albuquerque Fire Department Monthly Informational Report February – March

CURRENT EVENTS 2/21 - AFD is proud to have Fire Chief Paul W. Dow

unanimously approved by City Council.

2/23 - Three separate apartment fires occurred within

hours of one another in different parts of the city that

are unrelated and did not result in any injuries.

2/23 - A church fire on the 3700 block of Silver Ave.

SE was quickly extinguished.

2/25 - Engine and Rescue 11 rescued an unconscious victim

from an apartment fire near Gibson and San Pedro.

3/10 – Six AFD Firefighters deployed on a Brush Truck to

assist with a large wild land fire near Clayton, NM.

3/11 - Multiple AFD units responded to ABQ Sunport for an

emergency landing call resulting in two transports to area

hospitals.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT There were over 20 community involvement projects this

month such as station tours, public education events, and

community support opportunities.

Arson division is working on a grant to fund a Youth Fire

Setter Intervention and Prevention project.

AFD raced up 20 flights to beat out other local fire

departments to win the American Lung Association Fight for

Air Climb at the Hyatt Downtown.

AFD Academy instructors set up a Hands Only CPR booth at

Sandia Casino for Safer NM conference.

FIRE MARSHALLS OFFICE / INSPECTIONS Total inspections for the month of February are 773, with 564

new inspections and 209 re-inspections.

Efforts continue towards integrating miFIRE program

utilized in bridging FMO inspections with field crew’s pre-

incident fire plans.

FLEET MANAGEMENT Total fuel costs for the month of February is $38,880.62.

Ladder 21 will be out of service approximately 3 weeks for aerial and

Tak-4 welding. We currently have no spare Ladder apparatus available.

R15 at body shop for repair and will utilize a spare unit.

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS

Over 14 Fire Stations and other AFD buildings are currently involved

this month.

We are continuing our efforts to build interstitial entryways from bays to

the living quarters of our Fire Stations.

TRAINING

Target Solutions totaled 10,606 hours of both online and company training for all

members and 24 hours of Human Resources training has been added to annual Target

Solutions.

3/6 - Albuquerque Fire Department Academy hosted “Stop the Bleed: Train the Trainer”

for AFD members and other agencies to reach out to their respective communities to

teach and train treatment for trauma victims.

Wildland Division has started annual pack testing/shelter deployment at Balloon Fiesta

Park.

HTR Division hosted training with Station 3 at the NWS Doppler Radar Tower utilizing

high angle rescue of a simulated unconscious patient.

CNM will be sending EMT-Basic students for ride-a-longs with multiple Engine

apparatus this month.

De Anza Hotel offered real life training opportunities for AFD members to practice

forcible entry and roof operations before remodeling begins.

AFD STATION 18 E18 called out for smoke investigation near Coors / Montaño to

find a ½ acre brush fire in the bosque and called for additional

resources to successfully extinguish the fire

Station 18 hosted a tour for CNM students in the Fire Science

program

BLS care programs to increase patient care as well as help reduce the strain on

AFD STATION 2 Station 2 hosted a tour for 20 kids

AFD STATION 4 / BATTALION COMMANDER 1 Battalion Commander Skip Tinagero and

Jed Hyland were recognized by the

Optimist International Club for their efforts on a structure fire at 1135 Texas

Battalion 1 Commander attended St. Pius Memorial Tournament to display

the truck and public safety education

Squad 1, Ladder and Engine 4 crew members received training on Rigaku

ResQ chemical monitor at the AFD Academy

public safety education

AFD STATION 10 Engine 10 hosted a station tour for ABQ Sign Language Academy and is

staying ahead of the upcoming Wildland season

AFD STATION 3 Station 3 hosted Safer NM Car Seat Clinic as well as

two large station tours

Station 3 training involved simulated emergency of

an unconscious patient inside the NWS Doppler

Radar Tower utilizing high angle rescue

Station 3 responded to the 3700 block of Silver SE

for a church fire that was quickly extinguished, AFD

is working with other city departments to ensure the

property owner removes excessive combustibles

inside and secures the property

AFD STATION 5 / BATTALION COMMANDER 2 Battalion Commander Skip Tinagero and Jed Hyland were recognized by the

Optimist International Club for their efforts on a structure fire at 1135 Texas

Station 5 responded to a working fire on the 500 block of Vermont NE for a

bedroom fire in a duplex apartment building

Battalion 2 attended Coffee with Councilor Gibson as well as the South Los

Altos Neighborhood Association meeting

Capital Improvement division is installing an interstitial doorway that will

eliminate gas and diesel fumes from the apparatus bay from entering living

spaces in the station as well as security perimeter fencing

AFD STATION 11 Engine and Rescue 11 responded to more calls this month than any other

station with 526 and 452 respectively

Engine and Rescue 11 rescued an unconscious victim from an apartment fire

near Gibson and San Pedro

AFD STATION 19 / QI OFFICER

QI ran 163 calls this month, 30 of which were fire related and a

new QI officer was recently selected filling a third spot that was

recently vacant on C shift
