Dear Parents,

Happy Mothers’ Day to all our Mamoura’s mums. I hope you have a wonderful day and enjoy being looked after by your fami-lies on this very special day.

VISITING THE SPECIAL OLYMPICSWe were lucky enough this week to have the opportunity to visit the Special Olympics and see all the amazing events taking place. On Sunday Year 6 watched some fast paced bas-ketball games, and a very close fought handball game which they didn’t want to leave!

Year 4 visited ADNEC on Mon-day,the busiest day but were loving getting into a dancing competition before the games started, winning prizes for their efforts. They were then treated to being able to support a UAE player in his game which he won. Year 4 also had the oppor-tunity to participate in a bas-ketball coaching session which allowed them to practise their skills on one of the main game courts!

Secondary girls had their visit on Wednesday and it was won-derful to see 81 of them taking up this opportunity. They had the chance to see even more sports taking place including Bocce to start with which was

a new sport for most of them. Some groups saw different activities for the rest of the day including volleyball, powerlift-ing and badminton.

They also met HH Sheikh Man-sour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and HH Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan!

Throughout the week it has been inspiring to see the stu-dents’ reactions to the athletes and the whole ethos behind

the Special Olympics. We were lucky enough to meet and speak to Chairman of the Spe-cial Olympics Timothy Shriver on Wednesday, he is the son of Eunice Shriver who founded the Special Olympics 50 years ago. Some of the students recog-nised him immediately which is credit to the organisers here in Abu Dhabi over the last 2 years for raising the profile of this event enormously in the UAE. Long may this legacy last.

A Mother’s Surprise

Two hundred years ago in the city of London there lived a girl called Fiona. Her father was a very wealthy man by the name of Mr. John Spade. They lived in a colossal mansion called Spade Castle. It had a beau-tiful garden and a pool. Fio-na’s mother had died shortly after Fiona’s birth. Fiona had everything a child could ever have. Among all of the things Fiona owned was a mysterious box that her mother had left behind for her. Little did Fiona know that what was inside this box was about to change her life forever…

Dear Amber

Snowflakes danced as they swayed onto the cobbled, nar-row pathway. Snow carpeted the rooftops of houses. The roads were as quiet as a mouse and people were nowhere to be seen , except for one cheeky little girl named Topaz. Her small, wondering eyes peered at the lifeless, deserted town. As she ambled across the snowy path she discovered a door, the only door in town. Topaz approached the door curiously as she peered inside from the frosted window. There lay a dusty bear with black beady eyes. On the bear, lay a tag with only 2 words “Dear Amber”..

Soul Swap

Have you ever dreamed of living in someone else’s body? Or even have the thoughts of just closing your heavy eyelids and escaping from reality? You wouldn’t believe me when I tell you that this has happened to me. Dad used to tell me to stay away from the big, black woodeb door but I am going to admit this, I disobeyed my dad straight after he left for his boring work and soon as I opened the door, I found an old box, as soon as I opened the boxI was swapped

THE WINNERS!

Category 1: Yrs 1 – 3 = Ruqaiya Ahamed (Yr 3 Pipits) for her imaginative and engaging opening en-titled ‘A Mother’s Surprise’. Our 3 Yr 9 judges felt Ruqaiya used sophisticated vocabulary and had a well-developed storyline. Further comments include excellent use of detail and punctuation. The judges felt it really encouraged the reader to want to know more through her use of a secret ‘box’ which sounded mysterious.

Category 2: Yrs 4 – 6 = Parthivi Ramanujam Anugonda (Yr 6 Saadiyat) for her wonderful opening enti-tled ‘Dear Amber’. The Yr 9 judges agreed it contained excellent imagery and imaginative vocabulary. They were very impressed with the techniques used to build suspense such as ellipsis and rhetorical questions. It is a perfect example of an opening as it ended with a cliff-hanger to maintain the read-er’s interest.

Secondary: Saphiya Al Yafei, the English department were very impressed with Saphiya’s opening sentence which had a rhetorical question to hook the reader. Furthermore, Saphiya used direct ad-dress. We would love to see what the rest of the chapter might be about should Saphiya choose to continue her story!

We have been very busy in FS2 this week and in preparation for our visit to the zoo next week we have been reading the story ‘Dear Zoo’ and having a go at putting the animals in order and retelling the story.

We have also continued our learning about number sentenc-es, and this week we looked at adding two numbers together and putting them into a num-ber sentence. We hoped you all enjoyed our wonderful Mother’s Day assembly on Thursday, the children sang beautifully, and the special gifts the children worked so hard to make.

Don’t forgot we will be visit-ing the zoo next Tuesday 26th, children must come to school on this day wearing their sports kit. Have a lovely weekend

AL MAMOURA ACADEMY NEWSLETTERISSUE NO.23 | MARCH 2019

We have had another fun week in Year 1!

In English we have continued our work on recounts. We wrote a recount about International Day and enjoyed remember-ing all of the fun things we did including dressing up, having a parade, singing in assembly and visiting all of the stalls. We remembered to use time con-nectives and some adjectives and our teachers were very impressed.

In Maths we have really enjoyed investigating the capacity of different containers. We pre-dicted how many cups of water and sand it would take to fill the containers and enjoyed seeing if we were right. We also com-pared the capacity of different containers.

In Topic we really enjoyed shar-ing our favourite toy from home with our friends. We talked about why it was our favourite toy, what it was made from and showed everyone how to play with them.

Well done to Hares on a super assembly! You all did such a wonderful job speaking and singing.

Next week we will be using egg cartons to make 3D flowers for our topic next term. If you have any empty egg cartons at home please bring them in and give them to your child’s class teach-er. Thank you

Year 2 have had a very busy week and have enjoyed learning about their new topic of Poet-ry. We have been exploring the different types of poetry and identifying different features. We looked at rhyming poems, acrostic poems, Haiku Poems and riddle poems We then went on to write acrostic poems about ourselves. We even included Similes! Next week we will be continuing to look at Poetry and how we would perform poems. The children will be focusing on tone, expression and rhythm.

In Maths this week we have been continuing with money. We have been finding the differ-ence between different amount and we started practicing giving change. If you are at the shops over the weekend, it would be great if you could let your chil-dren put into practice what we have been learning.

This week we also spent some time creating Mother’s Day activities and the children have made some fantastic cards. The Year 2 team wanted to wish all the mothers in year 2 a very happy Mother’s Day. We thank you for all your support. We hope you have a lovely weekend.

AL MAMOURA ACADEMY NEWSLETTERISSUE NO.23 | MARCH 2019

We have had another great week in Year 3! In English we have continued gathering vocabulary for our stories and planning how we could use them in our work. In addition, we learnt how to use speech marks properly and we wrote a fun conversation be-tween the greedy monster and the frightened boy. Next week, we will be writing our own ver-sions of the story applying what we have learnt.

In Mathematics we have con-tinued learning about different units of length and how to con-vert between them. Further-more, we used mental addition and subtraction to help Mr. Booth order new furniture for the school. We also solved a problem for our friend Jack who wanted to find the quickest way to his friend’s house.

In Topic, we finished reading the ‘Pearl Diver’ and we wrote a job advert for it. Wow, that looks like a tough job! In Science, we learnt all about our muscles, how they work and how to keep them healthy. It was great to see so many homework projects.

The children have clearly put in a lot of effort.

Reminders: AR has now finished for this term and all books need to be returned to the library and children must wear the Al Mamoura hats at break and lunch times. No hat, no play!We are looking forward to our final week of Spring term. And finally to all our wonder-ful mothers, have a wonderful Mother’s Day and ensure your children spoil you rotten.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our lovely Year 4 Mummies, we hope you have a wonderful weekend with your children and families. What a week of celebrations this week with our trip to the World Games on Monday, Happiness Day on Wednesday and Mother’s Day today.

The children had a fabulous time at watching the athletes com-pete in various activities at the arena on Monday. A highlight for the children was watching the UAE representative win his badminton match and celebrate with the UAE team who were watching from the stands right in front of us!

In English this week we have continued to work on the fea-tures of a persuasive advert. The children have been creating their own Slogans including alliteration, persuasive vocab-ulary and exaggeration. Next week they will plan and create their ‘Hot Write’ to show just how much they have learnt and demonstrate the progress they have made.

In Maths this week the children have divided whole numbers by ten and used a ‘Gattegno Chart’ for problem solving and to help with the reasoning. Next week we will continue with decimals. In Science, the children have

been investigating which mate-rials have the best properties for absorbing sounds by designing ear defenders. Next week they will design and create their own musical instrument with the ability to change pitch. Please see reminders below for equip-ment needed.

Reminders: Please bring equipment that would be useful for making a musical instrument in Science next week. E.g: cereal boxes, cardboard, elastic bands, kitch-en roll tubes, rice, bottle tops, plastic bottles, plastic cups, lol-lipop sticks, straws, tin foil, cello tape and any other recyclable materials that might be handy.

Term 2 is drawing to a close and so is our study of the novel Holes. Things are tense in class as we await to hear the fate of Stanley. We have really enjoyed reading the novel and have learned a lot whilst studying the different parts of the book. We look forward to watching the movie next week and being able to compare the book with it. It will be interesting to see if they have changed details from the book and to have a vote on who prefers the original book or the film.

In Maths we are still working with decimals. It is satisfying to see maths that we have previ-ously learnt coming to our aid as we work through problems. A last push at our tables challenge before the end of will take place next week so keep practicing. In Art we studied Van Gogh’s starry night. The children looked at how different artists have in-terpreted the painting. We then merged our theme of space with our interpretation of the painting and completed a pastel study of the moon combining the style of Van Gogh with our own take on the painting.

In Moral Education this week we have looked at the very impor-tant issue of responsibilities. Responsibility both of ourselves and of others was examined.

Science this week had us com-plete a fun experiment in which we examined the different strengths of teas. We worked in groups and then had good prac-tice at writing up experiment reports.

*Please return the written con-sent form in order to watch our movie Holes next week.

Year 6 have had a very busy week, as we have been out on two very fun trips and also worked very hard in lessons. We had a great time at the Spe-cial Olympics and managed to see an array of different sports, such as, basketball, handball, volley ball, judo and even skat-ing! The children thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere of watching all the sports, learn-ing new sports they had never been seen played before and of course supporting the athletes.

We also had another great day at Bounce. As well as lots of jumping and exercise, we learnt all about the physics behind jumping and how this can help us to perform different skills on the trampoline!

In English, the children have been learning about different ways to use colons in their writ-ing and have begun to write a guided non-chronological report about Earthquakes.

Next week the children will be using all the skills we have learnt during this topic to write their own non chronological re-port about a natural disaster.

In Maths, we have been learning about perimeter and area of dif-ferent shapes. The children also had great fun making Mother’s Day cards and discussing all the things their lovely mums do for them every day!

Members of our Al Mamoura Choirs worked exceptionally hard over the last two weeks preparing for the opening cer-emony on Thursday last week. They put in over 30 hours of extra rehearsal time in evenings and weekends to prepare for the performance. Students from Year 2 to Year 7 took part and they were FANTASTIC!

They were super professional at all times, with a lot of different things to remember. Singing to a click track (where you hear the song you’re singing to through headphones in your ears) that sounds out of time when you take them out your ears, at the same time as hearing the con-ductor and producer talking to you through those headphones and reminding you to smile and face forwards is really difficult but they handled it like true professionals! There were a few sleepy heads when the show finished around 10.30pm but the memories will last a lifetime. Well done to all the students that performed and thank you to all the staff who helped to sup-port the children at these re-hearsals, and, of course, to the families for being so supportive of the event.

NETBALL

The U9 Netball team played in their end of season tournament at Zayed Cricket Stadium last Wednesday. The girls played well as a team and had some great games. We played our first game against West Yas. During this game the girls made some great passes down court and scored one goal, winning 1-0. Our next game was against GEMS Cambridge. The girls defended extremely well during this game making some great interceptions, and won again 1-0. After this we played against Yasmina. The girls really fought hard in this game sticking to their players and mak-ing space when needed and the final score was a 1-1 draw. Our final game was against Cranleigh. The U11B Netball team travelled to Cranleigh School on Monday for their end of season tournament. After a nervous start the team set-tled into their game, remembering to take their time to look for and make the best pass available. This led to some great shooting oppor-tunities which Ghaya and Lara took advantage of. Sara worked tire-lessly in defence to make several interceptions to stop the opposition scoring on many occasions. The team put everything into their last game of the day, playing a very controlled game to beat a strong Brighton team. The girls should

feel extremely proud of the season they have had and the improve-ments they have made on the Netball court.SWIMMING

Having spent the first few weeks of term practicing on a Sunday after school and very early Tuesday morning’s, the students were eager to continue their win-ning ways. The gala consisted of 5 schools; Al Mamoura Academy, West Yas Academy, Amity School, GEMS Cambridge and AISA. Al Mamoura students competed fantastically and battled with Amity for first place from the beginning, as both schools finished first and second in the team events. When the individ-ual events began, however Amity began to claim more points and take an early lead. By the time the gala reached the fi-nal team races, Amity had a quite a lead over other schools at the gala and all Al Mamoura could do was maintain earning points to ensure they finished second. The effort and attitude of all Al Mamoura swimmers was excellent and their continued progress will ensure they continue winning trophies in future galas! FOOTBALL

The U11 Football A-Team played in the end of season tournament on Monday at Zayed Cricket Stadium. After finishing 3rd in the league Al Mamoura were full of confi-dence before the tournament. A comfortable win against West Yas and a narrow defeat to the overall winners, BSAK, meant Al Mamou-ra progressed to the quarter-final against British International School Abu Dhabi (BISAD). The game was a fantastic contest and even extra time couldn’t split the teams. The game went to penalties and unfor-tunately Al Mamoura lost. The boys were absolutely devastated but still showed the sportsmanship to shake hands and congratulate their opponents. Many coaches from other teams commented on how well the Al Mamoura team had pro-gressed throughout the year and on the quality of the attacking football played. Mr Hughes could not be more proud of the boys and looks forward to a very promising football season in the next academic year.

The Under 11B team travelled to Amity International School to compete in the ADISSA football tournament. The team were placed in a tough group with BSAK, Raha and CIS. After battling well against BSAK for the first half, we unfortunately conceded 2 goals late on. The next game against Raha saw us create more chances, but Raha scored two unstoppable goals to take all the points. The team dusted themselves off ready for their third game and they came out fighting. They played excellently, and put in %100. Thanks to a goal from Abdulla Dosari, the team won 0-1 leaving them third in the group. The team played with plenty of character and enthusiasm, and were a credit to the school!
