AYAAH -17

Their example is like the one who Kindled a fire, but when

it illuminated what was around him, Allah took away

their light and left them in darkness [so] they could not

see.

Page 17: Al Baqarah Ayah 17-20

EXPLANATION

Their example is of someone who lit a fire, (so we can

imagine it being purely dark and then suddenly someone

lights a fire so gradually a light shows – there is pure

bright light everywhere.)

“.Allah removes THEIR light”.

Who are these people whose light Allah removes?

So Allah removed their sight after they preferred

misguidance over the light of guidance

Allah abandoned them and left them in many darkness's

upon darkness's.

AYAAH-18

Deaf (not able to Hear), Mute (not able to Speak), Blind

(not able to See) – so they will not Return.

Note:

There is no „and‟ inbetween them. Which means they are ALL 3 at the same

time.

Page 19: Al Baqarah Ayah 17-20

Now imagine being in the desert, and these people cannot

„hear‟, can‟t „speak‟, and are „blind‟ – all at once.

This means that no-one can guide them or help them,

and these people cannot ask others to guide them either.

And they cannot imitate others in guidance due to being

blind to the truth.

They are a lost cause and are blocked off from guidance

in every way.

EXPLANATION

They did not stay committed to light sincerely, so they

lost it and were lost in darkness's of misguidance.

AYAAH-19

Or picture a dark cloud in the sky, in which there is a lot

of darkness, thunder and lightning. “They place their

fingers in their ears, from (because of) the loud

explosions, being wary of death, and Allah has

completely encircled the disbelievers.

Page 21: Al Baqarah Ayah 17-20

EXPLANATION

These are like heavy/dark/clouds which come really

low, so it looks like its night time, even though its

daytime.

And imagine these clouds raining harshly, strong wind

and thunder and lightning flashing.“They place their fingers in their ears, from (because of)

the loud explosions ”.

Because Allah knows who the disbelievers are (even

though they may be hypocrites pretending to be

Believers.)

Page 22: Al Baqarah Ayah 17-20

The scholars say: The hypocrites are in a very difficult

journey and in this journey there are a lot of scary

things happening. (i.e. when people enter Islam, there

are a lot of difficulties people have to pass through).

The hypocrites are so scared of these challenges, that

they put their fingers in their ears to disillusion

themselves that none of this is really happening, so

that they do not have to fulfill the Islamic

responsibilities.

But What does Allah mean by this scenario?

Page 23: Al Baqarah Ayah 17-20

AYAAH-20

The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every

time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but

when darkness comes over them, they stand [still].

And if Allah had willed, He could have taken away their

hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allah is over all things

able.

Page 24: Al Baqarah Ayah 17-20

EXPLANATION

The lightning almost takes their eyesight away. So when

the hypocrite sees the believers performing extremely

difficult tasks in the religion, the hypocrite is almost

blinded by shock (hoping that he does not have to go

through such difficulty.)

“Every time the light comes out for them – they see, but

when it goes again – they stand.”

The scholars comment that this refers to the easy good

deeds. So when the hypocrite sees easy good deeds – he

walks forward a bit with the believers, then suddenly

stops again when he faces hardship, and sticks his

fingers in his ears again.

HYPOCRISY

Hypocrisy is a serious sickness and a

great crime. It means making an outward

display of Islam whilst inwardly

concealing kufr. Hypocrisy is more

dangerous than kufr (disbelief).

WHAT IS HYPOCRISY

Page 26: Al Baqarah Ayah 17-20

WHO ARE HYPOCRITE

Hypocrites are two-faced people, who

act as if they were pious believers, though

they do not have faith. They associate

themselves with believers, appearing to be

faithful, so as to deceive them in whatever

way they can.

NOTE :

The reason they seek to be accepted among the believers is to gain

some personal advantage.

The word “Hypocrite” is “Munafiq” in Quraan.

muNaafiq comes from the word-Naafaqa= a Lizard‟s hole

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Before the Holy Prophet's emigration to

Madinah the tribes of the Aus and the

Khazraj, fed up with their mutual rivalries

and civil wars, had almost agreed on the

leadership of one man and were making

preparations to crown him their king. This

was Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul.

Then, when the Holy Prophet arrived in

Madinah, all people forget Abdullah bin

Ubaay

Page 28: Al Baqarah Ayah 17-20

Ibn Ubayy in particular was filled with grief, for the Holy Prophet(upon whom be Allah's peace) had deprived him of his kingship.

On the one hand, when on Fridays the Holy Prophet (upon whombe Allah's peace) took his seat to deliver the Sermon, Abdullah binUbayy would stand up and say "O people, the Messenger of Allah ispresent among you, by whom Allah has honored you;therefore, you should support him and listen to what he says andobey him.

SIGNS OF HYPOCRITE

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam)

said: “Whoever has (the following) four

characteristics will be a pure hypocrite:

If he speaks, he tells a lie;

If he gives a promise, he breaks it;

If he makes a covenant he proves

treacherous; And

If he quarrels, he behaves in a very

imprudent, evil, insulting manner (unjust).

And whoever has one of these

characteristics, has one characteristic of a

hypocrite unless he gives it up.”

Page 31: Al Baqarah Ayah 17-20

PUNISHMENT FOR HYPOCRITE

The hypocrites are in the lowest level of the Fire. You will not

find any one to help them.An-Nisa 4:145

Page 32: Al Baqarah Ayah 17-20

CONCLUSION Allaah gives Hidayaah at that time when the person really

will.

Effect of good things on Hypocrite will be timely and they

don‟t accept with their hearts.

Whenever we come to know about our sins readily we

should ask for Forgiveness before we moved away from

Hidayaah.
