FROM YOUR POTENTATE

Dear Nobles and Ladies,

I would be remiss if I failed to extend my person appreciation to Ill. Sir Brian Shimmons, Past Potentate for his guidance, dedication and management of Al Azhar throughout 2014.

If I can take you back to the Carriage House Inn and our General meeting and festivities that followed. The Potentate’s Ball was “a party”, starting with the little people skating across the dance floor to the extravaganza of light which complimented the entertainment during the evening. Lady Wendy and I planned an atmosphere of fun, I trust it was a memory for all as it was for us. I would like to thank Ill. Sir Gordon Berard, P.P. who acted as my Director General, his direction was certainly instrumental in the success of the event. I would also like to acknowledge with gratitude to all of our friends who acted as our assistants. In particular, Ill. Sir Don Westrop, P.P. and Lady Carol who were very gracious in their positions as our Chief assistants. As special acknowledgement to Past Potentate Don Westrop who took on a second role as master of ceremonies and ensured I didn’t monopolize the mike.

January continued to be busy with my attendance at Al Shamal for the Potentate’s Installation and again in Seattle in honour of the Potentate at Nile. Unit social events are always important and I thank the Oriental Band for their invitation to their wine and cheese night. I also had the pleasure of attending four separate units meetings. The one that got away was the Medicine Hat Shrine Club which I almost attended. At the last minute I checked with Noble John Nagy and found they were still in darkness as the majority of their membership was still south. It would have been a short meeting of one. January was also time for our partnership with the Hitman Hockey Club and the Shrine Challenge Cup which was centre stage. We were delighted to have the Imperial Potentate, Imperial Sir Dale Stauss and Lady Cheryl attend. We enjoy a great relationship with the Hitman and I’m pleased to say it will continue through 2015. Thank you to all who participated not only at the event but for the arduous task of selling tickets. Of note we surpassed last year’s total with 9,000 attending and approximately 1,300 tickets sold. To date, I do not have a total of what monies were made on the events as we are still in the process of collecting funds. The Hitman Organization has confirmed a cheque for $4,985. These funds represent the split in the 50-50 ticket sales which will be directed to the Shriners Hospital in Montreal.

February was busy, starting with a “wine and cheese” with the Shrine Patrol. A great turnout and hospitality shown by all. PNSA was the next major event at Nile in Seattle, Washington. Al Azhar was well represented with seven attending. Membership seemed to be the main focus with an excellent exchange of ideas from all participating Temples. The culmination of the conference ended with a banquet in honour of all eighteen Temples. Al Azhar once again left its mark winning the Challenge Trophy, we not only collected the most money in support of first Lady Cheryl Stauss but with our secret Weapon our own “blue streak”, who managed to tantalize the audience with his antics. Thanks goes out to Noble John Bradford for being such a good sport. The Potentate of Nile, my counterpart, Ill. Sir Dave Brady Jr. will never be the same. The month ended with our Chinese New Years’ which was a huge success. We had 203 in attendance, a personal thank you to the organizing committee and the entire Oriental Band for their efforts.

Since January, the Divan has attempted to institute change. We have amended the reporting process and defined individual responsibilities. We have focused on areas both within the temple and outside grounds which were identified having areas of concern. Our lighting and electrical systems together with ensuring our kitchens are functional have remained an immediate priority. We have focused on the décor of the interior and the steps are underway to enhance its overall presentation. We are addressing storage concerns and removing items which over time have been needlessly collected. Our mandate is simple, everyone is expected to participate and remain accountable. We are not content with the status quo, we have an expectation that revenue will increase. We acknowledge that our Web Site needs a redesign, which has been initiated. We are also in the process of opening up our doors to corporate Calgary. We have designed a brochure which will be sent to Corporate Calgary to attract new business. Over the next while we will be attending your unit and club meeting to address some of these changes and detail ongoing plans. We feel that with your cooperation and personal ownership we can all make a difference.

Thank you for your continuing support.

Yours in the Faith,

Ill. Sir Bob Newman, Potentate

RECORDER’S RAMBLINGS

Nobles and Ladies: I am pleased to be able to serve Al Azhar as Recorder for 2015. I know I have big shoes to fill. Noble Garth Border served faithfully and with distinction for 10 years and, I know, his efforts and contributions were much appreciated and he is well deserved of being made “Recorder Emeritus” for Al Azhar. I am happy to report that the transition between Noble Garth and myself has gone well. Fortunately, Noble Garth is only a phone call or email away so, if I need some wise counsel, I can get it quickly. I am generally in the office between 10 am and 3 pm Monday to Friday. Why not drop in for a chat. Parade season is just around the corner. It is not too early to get your move-out requests in for approval so your unit or club is covered by our insurance. (The parade schedule will be posted on the Al Azhar website soon.) Just a friendly reminder that Divan members should be made aware of all Society meetings. Divan members are directors of all Al Azhar Societies and no decisions made by Societies are valid unless confirmed by the Divan. The easiest way to keep the Divan in the loop is to copy the Recorder (me) on Society meeting notices. I will ensure the information is conveyed to Divan members and that a Divan rep attends the Society meeting. Please make every effort to attend the Cold Sands Ceremony to welcome our new Nobles. Yours in the Faith Brian Shimmons Recorder

CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE Did you keep your New Year’s resolution to be healthier? My personal resolution in 2015 is to be able to attend a Stated Business Meeting and not have to do a Black Camel Memorial Service. I personally go to the gym 5 days a week. One of my personal trainers really got after me last November because I haven’t lost a lot of weight during 2014. Yes, I have lost about 20 inches off my body but muscle weighs more than fat. She did a detailed analysis of my eating and liquid consumptions and determined that was my major problem. My calorie intake was excessive and my water consumption was too low. She had me cut back on bread as well as consuming fewer calories during my meals and eliminating snack foods. As well, nothing to eat after 8:00 PM. Water consumption was to be increased dramatically. When I go to a restaurant I ask for the sauces to be served on the side. In the first month, I dropped 13 pounds and I have to admit, I felt really better and had more energy. Before Lady Doreen passed away two years ago, we used to walk one hour every day. If you don’t choose to go to the gym, this is an excellent way to lose weight. When I travel, as I do quite extensively, I do sit-ups and other exercises each day in my hotel room. If I need a weight I lift a chair. I am not keen about getting on the carpet I do my exercises on the bed. As well, when I go somewhere, I park the car away from where I am going and walk. If I have a choice between an escalator or elevator and stairs I always choose the stairs. The bottom line is the Shrine depends on us to be healthy as do our loved ones. The ten greatest words in the English language are, “If it is to be, it is up to me”. Make your choices wisely. Registration is now open for this fall’s PGA Shrine Tournament in Las Vegas. I have registered and I would recommend that you get your registration in early. If you have any questions just give Ill Sir Gordon Brewer a shout and he would be glad to help you. I know Ill. Sir Gordon’s goal is to beat last year’s record and it is certainly one of the highlights of my Shrine year so DO IT NOW! In the light of Grace, Noble R. Dean Cowan, Chaplain 2015

Nobles and Ladies the official opening of the new Montreal Shriners Hospital is fast approaching – August 19-20, 2015. We are expecting a very large crowd to attend this event and those who are interested should make arrangements for their rooms as soon as possible. Rooms have been set aside at the Le Nouvel Hotel & Spa. Contact Information: 1001 Boulevard Decarie, Montreal, PQ 1 (514) 931-8841 [email protected] Please be sure to mention that you are with the Al Azhar Shriners. We have also been asked by the Hospital to provide a list of those attending and would therefore appreciate if you could let the Shrine Centre office know if you plan to attend. Everyone attending the Opening Ceremony must be registered as the dedication is being done on land that is not owed by the Hospital (This does also include the Daughters of the Nile for the dedication ceremony on the Wednesday). Hospital Tours will be available after the dedication on Thursday and also on Friday morning. As with the dedication ceremony you must register in advance for these tours if you are interested. The Official opening of the new hospital will not be the same date as the dedication so there will be no patients in the hospital at that time. There will also be an open house held on September 18, 19 & 20th to allow for others to visit.

To prepare for the move from the old to the new location there will be only emergency clinics, no surgeries performed between September 28th and October 6th. The move is currently scheduled for October 1st. Our hospital will be connecting with the Children’s and Adult hospitals for emergencies during this process. No Hospital tours will be held during October due to this transition.

Remembering Why I Became a Shriner By Randy Rudge, Membership Development Director, Shriners International If you were asked, “What does your Shriner membership mean to you,” how would you respond? A few years ago, I was asked to do a Shriner membership presentation. I worked for months preparing what I would say and do. But, the night before the presentation I realized that it was nothing like I wanted it to be. So I decided I wasn’t going to do a presentation at all. I was going to listen. At the beginning of each workshop, I had each member think about and write down why he became a Shriner. Then, I asked each to write his two proudest moments as a Shriner. I realize that for many it was hard to pick just two, but I wanted the first two memories that came to mind. What the attendees didn’t know was that each of them was going to share what he had written. That became the most inspirational workshop I have ever participated in. What we heard were the true tenants of Freemasonry and the principles of our Shriners Creed. While there were inspiring stories regarding the children we serve in our hospitals, many of the stories dealt with the brotherly love and fellowship that are only achieved by being a member. When I think back about my membership, I think about the incredible friends I have made and how they have become my extended family. How they have lent a hand and listened when I was in need, shared a laugh, dedicated their time and made me their friend. But most of all, I think of my membership as an incredible bond between me and my father. I remember the pride he expressed when I became a Shriner, all the responsibilities I took on, and the endless discussions with our mutual friends. And the fun we had together. My dad passed away four years ago on March 6, after a long illness. During his illness, he had not been out of the house for many months, but he decided to attend a Shriners’ function. At the event, we sat him in a chair and noble after noble came up to him to shake his hand and say hello. Dropping him off at his home later that evening, I gave him a hug and said goodnight. I will always remember him looking back at me with tears in his eyes and thanking me. That was the last time he went out in public. After listening to many stories similar to mine during the workshop, I asked the attendees what they learned from the exercise. What they said was that they experienced a lot of emotion, pride, love and fellowship in that room. My message is simple: As Shriners and leaders, it is our responsibility to guide others so that they achieve the same emotion, pride and fellowship we experience as Shriners. When we do, our organization will prosper. Now, I ask each of you to write down why you became a Shriner and your two proudest moments as a Shriner. If you would like to share your story, please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for being Shriners.

Carter has a real friend in Calvillo

CFL legend develops special bond with inspiring Saskatchwan boy

Carter Brown is looking forward to a play date

with one of his best friends While it’s not surprising that the eight-year-old

Milestone, Sask. Resident want to hand around with a buddy, what is surprising is that this particular buddy is a 42-year-old product of Los Angeles who passed for 79,816 yards and 455 touchdowns during his CFL career.

Carter’s pal is Anthony Calvillo. “It has really been an honour (having Calvillo as

a friend),” Carter says from his family’s home. “I’m really happy to be with him.”

The two met in Montreal in August, when Carter

was a guest speaker at a golf tournament held to raise funds for the Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada.

The new facility is to open in Montreal in August. Carter has made frequent trips to the Shriners Hospital over his eight years. He suffers from

Osteogenesis Imperfecta – more commnly known as brittle bone disease – and has been getting treatments at the Montreal hospital since he was seven weeks old.

Since November, Calviollo has gone to the hospital every time Carter has been there for treatment. “A lot of times he’s pretty tired because he’s going through his treatments or he’s recovering from

treatment, so we’ll talk about sports or about family,” says Calvillo, who’s now the receivers coach for the Montreal Alouettes, the team he quarterbacked for 16 of his 20 seasons in the CFL.

Anthony Calvillo and his eight-year-old pal Carter Brown, of Milestone, Sask. who has been battling brittle bone disease since he was born.

“To see this kind of character, this kind of attitude, coming from a young kid is something that I want to be around. It inspires me and it inspires other people.”

The future Hall of Famer will be in Regina on Friday for an event with Carter to raise funds fro the new Shriners Hospital in Montreal.

When Carter and Calvillo are tother, Carter’s mom, Jennifer Brown, can feel the love. “Anthony is a fantastic person in Carter’s life. He also happens to be a CFL legend, but he’s a friend first

of all.” When Carter was born, he had 12 fractures to bones in his arms, legs, ribs and verebrae – and he was

eventually diagnosed with Ostoegenesis Imperfecta. It’s a genetic disorder in which the suffer doesn’t have enough collegen or enough high-quality collegen

in their connective tissue, and as a result the person’s bones break easily. Doctors told Carter’s parents he would spend his life in a wheelchair currounded by pillows and that he

would suffer a frature just picking up a pencil. He would never sit up on his own and he would never walk. “As parents, we wanted more and we were looking for answers,” Jennifer says. “As a result of that, we

founc out about the Shriners Hospital in Montreal.” In Carter’s first visit, he was given a dose of a drug invented at the hospital that increases bone density

and eases the pain in the patient’s bones. It was incredible because he had always been so uncomfortable as far as spasms after his fratures or little jots wheere he would scream,” Jennifer says. “All of a sudden, he was sleeping through the night and not in so much pain.”

By the time he was 18 months old, Carter was crawling. By 1 2/3, after having a rod inserted in a leg to help support the femur, he was walking with an

assistance of a walker. In 2010, just moments after leading the Als to a Grey Cup victory over the Sasatchewan Roughriders,

Calvilllo revealed he had a lesion on his thyroid and that surgery was required. He susequently was diagnosed with caner – and he beat it in short order. He was back with the Als for

the 21011 campain, providing inspiration to cancer patients across Canada. Now, the cancer survivor is inspired by an eight-year-old boy. This is a young man who, even though he’s dealing with hthis done disease, is embracing it,” Calvillo

says. “He’s out there enjoying life and th’s encouraging. That’s inspirational.” If Calvillo is impressed by Carter, the reverse also hold true. “I’m inspired by him too because of his fight with cancer,” says the Grade 2 student. “He has been

through a lot, so I can do it too.”

AIR CORPS NEWS

Spring is in the air and with that brings new life to us all. The Air Corps is proud to welcome new members Randy Alicna, Tom Sulit, Ron Altares, Alan Angeles and Alexander Serquina, may they fly true.

Over the winter we have redone the tires and hubs, which were about 35 years old, on all the planes to insure they will land with no problems. Many thanks to Kevin Walker for continuing to upgrade and maintain our squadron of planes.

The Air Corps will be participating in many parades and show this parade season kicking off in High River on the 16th of May (weather permitting). We were looking forward to the Air Show in Airdrie in July but due to a new runway at YYC the Air Show has to find a new venue with Springbank Air Port possibly being the host. We will be going to PNSA in Butte in August and are hoping to take 6 planes with us.

The Air Corps will be hosting its 2nd Annual Beef and Pig Roast on July 26th at the Shrine Centre (See Poster). Tickets can be purchased from Pat or Cinde at the Shrine office, myself and many Nobles from the Air Corps who have tickets. We had over 250 out last year and we hope to have a better turnout this year.

Fraternally

The Al Azhar Mounted Patrol recently presented a cheque to the Calgary Distress Centre. The cost of training the Crisis Line Volunteers is almost $2000.00 per person and the donation will help pay the better part of two voluntters being trained. This Organization does such great work, helping so many people, working 24-7, 365 days of the year. We were also fortunate enough to be given a tour of the facility while there.

PROVOST CORPS

The AL AZHAR PROVOST CORPS began January 2015 with our new slate of elected officers: Captain Neil Webb, Lieutenant Larry McKinley, and 2nd Lieutenant Ken Turner. Noble Chuck Allott will remain as the appointed Secretary and Noble Martin Alcock has assumed the duties of the Treasurer. Our first meeting for 2015 began with introducing our newly elected Potentate; Illustrious Sir Robert Newman, who will also be the DIVAN REP for the Provost Corps during his tenure as Potentate. “We welcome you aboard Sir Robert”. The meeting was based primarily on the usual Business of the Corps however, there was lengthy discussions regarding Fund Raising, Recruitment, Summer Parade commitments along with the Financial Health of the Corp and the Society. The Provost Corps were called on to augment the members of GLENBOW LODGE in conferring the FC Degree on several candidates. It was understood that seven of our members performed admirably in their assigned lectures in this Degree and we offer our services to any Lodge that may need a bit of help. Illustrious Sir Robert encouraged any members of the Provost Corps who had pervious Military or Police service to consider joining up with the LEGION OF HONOR, five of our members expressed an interest and at the meeting held at the Horton Road Legion, two of our members signed on the dotted line and three others are in waiting. (No doubt we will be able to help in carrying the flags and assisting the LOH in the Remembrance Day Ceremonies.) Despite a tad bit of confusion regarding our meeting on Saturday March 21, 2015, when the Chief Rabban, Byron Nelson, was to sit in at our meeting for the Potentate however, he was advised by someone (who shall remain nameless) that we were not there, so Byron trundled off to the Shrine Centre only to find we were not there either. Despite the confusion we carried on with the General Business meeting. (Please accept our Sincere apologies for this confusion Byron. (We have solved the problem – see below) Despite the confusion our Business meeting went well. The main topic was the possibility of purchasing a used truck to tow our trailer to and from parades. At the present time we are renting a vehicle, however the overall logistics of doing this is cumbersome, it may well be better to purchase a vehicle for this purpose. Lieutenant Larry McKinley is to look into this matter with the Shrine Centre “Head She” and report back to the Captain without delay. (A truck with a Crew Sab would fill the bill nicely – There is one readily available) Captain Neil concluded the meeting stating that all future Provost Corps meetings would be conducted at the Shrine Centre. This will avoid any further confusions. The next meeting will be held on Saturday May 2nd, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the SHRINE CENTRE. As usual all Provost Corps members are encouraged to attend these meetings, remembers this is your Corps and you have an obligation to express your concerns.

SHRINE PATROL

Greetings from the Shrine Patrol. As parade season draws near we are preparing for and looking forward to another busy year. The Patrol will be participing in several parades in 2015 including the Stampede Parade and we look forward to seeing everyone at these events.

We will also be cooking for four Stampede breakfasts during the week of July 6th to 9th. This is a very busy time for the Patrol but with the help of our spouses, family and friends it is an enjoyable week of hard work and camaraderie for everyone.

On a sad note, I would like to announce the passing of two very long time members of the Patrol, Noble Jim Sutherland and Noble Bill Doddridge. They both will be dearly missed and their contributions to the success of the Patrol will never be forgotten.

Another successful Unit appreciation Wine & Cheese party was held on February 8th and we were very pleased to welcome our Potentate Illustrious Sir Bob Newman and Lady Wendy as our guests. Thanks to Noble Wayne Capper for supplying the wine and the cheese and Noble Andy for the fruit and crackers. It was an enjoyable evening for everyone who attended.

At the time of this issue of the Fez Sez our 300 Club will have already taken place and for those who attended and purchased tickets we would like to express our sincere thanks for your support of this annual fundraisrer for the Patrol.

The Patrol would like to welcome any Shriners who may be interested in joining our unit or just wanting to give the Segways a try. Come out to one of our regular meetings or practices and give it a whirl. You may find it a lot of fun.

The Patrol Club Runner website is up and russning and all of our information is posted on the site. If you have any questions please fee free to contact any member of the Patrol.

When times get touch, always remember our common goal is the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Always keep in mind, without our effort and dedication, many children would suffer from a lack of treatment or no treatment at all. Keep the faith and have a great year.

Noble Andy Pokolinski, Captain Al Azhar Shrine Patrol 2015
