CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE We're home! There were over 30 Nobles and Ladies from Al Azhar at the recent Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas, Nevada from October 15 to 20. The weather there was incredible with an average daytime temperature of about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The course was in Summerlin which is an area of North Las Vegas and the community is very high end where even Ill Sir Charlie Duffin owns a home. The course it's self is world class and is called The Player's Course Summerlin and this is where all PGA tournaments are held in Las Vegas. This is where Tiger Woods won his first major event in 1996. While the tournaments have been held for the past 31 years, it is the 6th year that The Shriners have been involved. There are over 950 volunteers and it is estimated that about 20% are Shriners. Many of the volunteers have been with the Tournament for many, many years prior to the present involvement of the Shrine. In my case, I was working with Noble Richard Sigurdson (who is Chairman on The Hill which is a gigantic tent for the spectators to visit and observe the Tournament) and his wife Ann. I worked about 6 hours a day and that left time to go to the shows (I visited 7 in my 12 days) and shopping. On the Other hand Ill Sir Charlie Duffin, Nobles Bob Graham and OG Karl Fraser were roving Canadian Ambassadors. What their exact job was besides spreading goodwill remains a mystery. There are a number of different positions you can volunteer for that are on the Shriner's website. Most volunteers go in for the week but I wanted a few extra days for some personal time. The volunteers receive lower priced hotel rooms which this year was $49 Sunday to Thursday and $99 Friday and Saturday. We were given our meals at the course. As well, you are required to purchase a uniform at a very nominal cost which also included an opening and closing party. Certainly one of the highlights was the dinner put on by Ill Sir Ed Jakubowsky at Lawry's Steakhouse. Yes, they are the inventor of the BBQ spice. This was for the Nobles and Ladies of Al Azhar and this is one of the highest end steakhouses in Las Vegas. Their specialty is Prime Rib which they serve tableside in an 8 foot BBQ made of stainless steel. Ya gotta be there to believe it! Thanks from all of us Ill Sir Edward. Curiously, this is not a huge money maker for the Shrine. In fact, their goal is to break even or turn a small profit as it is an expensive event to run. Webb Simpson, the winner this year had a $1,080,000 pay day. However, last year in the two weeks following the Tournament there were $20,000,000 in online donations to the Shrine. I am not going to spoil the surprise but watch for an announcement from the Divan pertaining to this event and Al Azhar's future involvement. I will be there next year - I guarantee it. You should be too! In the Light of Grace, Noble R. Dean Cowan Chaplain 2013

SABRE MINIATURE CAR PATROL When will summer be gone? Today (October 24th) is hitting 20 degrees! Most units consider the Cochrane parade the end of Summer and begin putting together their winter plans while enjoying a Fabulous Fall. The Sabres participated in 8 parades and although not all cars finished all parades we still had an enjoyable time and entertained hundreds of youngsters. We plan to solve our chain drive problem over the Winter by replacing them with belt drives. Soon we will be as efficient as our fellow “Air Corps” Nobles. Rest assured we have not been idle. In July we once again provided our expertise in providing a BBQ service to the Holstein Cattle Association and in return they contributed $15,600.00 to our Children’s Hospitals. Thanks to Lonnie Rodgers and his team we have been able to raise close to $50,000. Over the last 3 years. Hopefully the relationship will continue as the cattlemen have been great supporters of our philanthropy. Recently (October 20th) our group with our spouses enjoyed a splendid afternoon at the club house at Dream View Village hosted by Colin and Joy Austin. Unfortunately Colin decided to check into the Rockyview Hospital at the last moment for a few days and left Joy to handle the show. She did a great job. Also, Colin recovered quickly and returned home well rested. Our next social gathering will be December 11, 2013 at the Shrine Centre for our Annual Christmas Dinner and Installation of Officers for 2014. We will be having a meeting in November to elect the new officers. Any Noble who is interested in join our group is welcome to attend. Please feel free to give me a call re time and location of the meeting. In our last edition we highlighted that several of our members experienced serious health issues. Today we are delighted to inform you that all are doing well ie Kevin in Hawaii, Sean in B.C. and Keith holding the fort at home while Barb travels to Toronto. Good to have you up and running. One of our old time members and race car driver (Barry Davey) will become President of the Foothills Shrine Club for 2014. Once again the culinary expertise of the Sabre’s will be put to work in providing a Prime Rib Buffet Dinner for Barry and his new Executive Team in High River in late November. The last major event approaching very quickly will be the Hitmen game at the Saddledome on Sunday November 3rd. Bring the kids and have their picture taken by General Lee. See you there!! Yours in the Faith, Cawford Caswell Swordmaster

THE PATROL

A very busy and successful summer parade season is now completed. The Shrine Patrol participated in nine parades plus the Cadet Tattoo and PNSA Lethbridge this past year and we will also participate in the North South Shrine Hockey Challenge. A special thank you to all units members for taking the time to support all of these activities as well as our Stampede breakfasts. The new Segways have proven to be very popular with the members of the unit and the comments from the general public have been excellent. The election of Officers for 2014 took place at our AGM held on October 7 and the new slate of Officers are: Captain – Noble Andy Pokolinski 1st Lt – Noble Shane Edwards 2nd Lt – Noble Ron Johnson Secretary – Noble John Bradford Treasurer – Noble Jim Webber Thanks to all for accepting these positions for the next term. The Installation of Officers will take place at the annual banquet to be held November 2 at the Shrine Centre. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Annual Breakfast with Santa for the children will be held on Saturday 7 at the Shrine Centre. Please take note of the change to a Saturday this year. --------------à

Notices will be mailed to all members of Al Azhar by Pat and Cinde. If you are interested in riding a Segway or in joining the Shrine Patrol, we meet on Monday evenings at 7pm for practice and fellowship. Come out and meet the members of the unit and try riding one of the Segways, you might find it a lot of fun. The Shrine Patrol would like to thank Ill. Sir Gordon Brewer for an excellent year in 2013 and we look forward to continuing our support for our incoming Potentate Noble Brian Shimmons and the Divan for 2014. As Captain and, on behalf of the Officers and members of the Shrine Patrol, I would like to thank everyone for their support in the past and going forward. Yours in the faith Noble Any Pokolinski Captain 2014 MOUNTED PATROL The June 2013 flood did not spare the Mounted Patrol grounds. Although there wasn’t any extensive damage to the buildings, the grounds between the barn and the club house were covered in water. The pastures on the west side of the Fezdome had considerable damage and most of the fences were washed away or damaged. But, things are nearly back to normal thanks to help from many dedicated members and friends of the Mounted Patrol. The AMP attended the Shrine Ceremonial in Lethbridge, July 25-27, 2013 and took part in the competition. We were happy to welcome the Black Horse Patrol from Billings, Montana as well as the (cont’d p16)

Wa Wa Equestrian Patrol from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, who entertained us with a very impressive demonstration. An impromptu pre-competition entertainment was supplied by Noble Brad Diegel. Brad and his trusty horse put on a rodeo for the spectators. (Incidentally, this was not on the program). Unfortunately, the horse won and Brad ended up with a broken collar bone. Thankfully, Brad has recovered and seems to be suffering no ill effects. The Nobles gave his performance an 8. The August 2nd week-end saw the Unit drive to Oyen to help celebrate their 100th Anniversary of the founding of the town. The Unit performed their musical ride in the Oyen Arena and I think the entire town of Oyen turned out to watch. They were very appreciative of the Mounted Patrol making the effort to attend their celebrations. Noble President Ken Weller and Lady Lorraine grew up in the Oyen area and enjoyed the week-end visiting with old acquaintances.
