Kathleen Welch, former resident at Philips Court, will be remembered fondly by staff and residents following a kind donation from her sons Christopher and John, after she sadly passed away. Christopher and John donated 1950s style furniture and a host of trinkets from their mum’s collection, which now make up a homely lounge at Philips Court. The lounge was unveiled to residents and staff by Kathleen’s sons at a ribbon cutting ceremony. Karleen Taylor-Williams, Manager at Philips Court, said: “Kathleen was a very popular resident and she is missed very much. The donated furniture has gone a long way in helping the residents to reminisce, but it also allows us to remember Kathleen’s kindness and generosity. Philips Court care home inGateshead has been transportedback in time thanks to thekindness of someone very closeto the home.

Kathleen Welch, former resident at PhilipsCourt, will be remembered fondly by staffand residents following a kind donation

from her sons Christopher and John, aftershe sadly passed away.

Christopher and John donated 1950sstyle furniture and a host of trinkets fromtheir mum’s collection, which now makeup a homely lounge at Philips Court.

The lounge was unveiled to residentsand staff by Kathleen’s sons at a ribboncutting ceremony.

Karleen Taylor-Williams, Manager atPhilips Court, said: “Kathleen was avery popular resident and she ismissed very much. The donatedfurniture has gone a long way inhelping the residents to reminisce, butit also allows us to rememberKathleen’s kindness and generosity.We are very thankful to Christopherand John for the thoughtful donation.”

Festive fayre atNewton Aycliffecare home Aycliffe Care Home held a funChristmas fayre, which was attendedby The Mayor of Newton Aycliffe,Councillor Mrs Barbara A Clare,and members of th e local community.

The fayre raised more than £925.00 for extra treats for the residents at Christmas andthere was face painting, balloon making, a tombola, stalls selling bric a brac, books, cdsand cakes, refreshments and fun festive games, including pin the nose on the reindeer,for everyone to enjoy.

Aycliffe Care Home is Located on Burnhope Way and is a purpose built 54-bed homethat provides 24 hour general residential and dementia care. The home also providesgeneral nursing and dementia nursing care.

Shirley Summerbell, Peripatetic Manager for Akari Care, said: “We were thrilled that TheMayor of Newton Aycliffe, Councillor Mrs Barbara A Clare, could join us for our fayre. Ourresidents always love meeting members of the community, so it was great that lots ofpeople came along to support the home and residents.”

Residents at Lindsay House, which isbased in Parbold, Lancashire, weretreated to a special Valentine’s Day lunchof spaghetti bolognese - Lady and theTramp style - followed by heart shapedshortbread biscuits.

Members of staff decorated the diningroom with heart shaped balloons andgarlands and all the tables had a fresh redrose and love heart sweets.

Lindsay House is located on Parbold Hilland provides care for up to 25 elderlyresidents, some of whom have dementia.

Lindsay Craddock, Manager at LindsayHouse, said: “We always like to celebratethe special days in the diary and all theresidents really enjoyed the Valentine’smeal- love was definitely in the air!”

Members of staff at Stockton-based Wellburn House Care Home played a starring rolein the first episode of the Sky1 series ‘Ashley Banjo’s Big Town Dance’.

Lisa Stephenson, Manager at Wellburn House and Heidi Riddle and Lesley Cushley, whoare both senior care staff at the home, took part in the show, which saw Ashley Banjo,who is part of the Britain’s Got Talent winning dance troupe Diversity, aiming to get theNorth East town of Stockton dancing again.

Following successful auditions, Lisa and her colleagues were allocated parts in the ‘PublicServices Crew’, which had 30 dancers whose day jobs ranged from a Vicar to a bus driver.

The series followed members of the different dance crews as they rehearsed with Ashleyand Diversity, preparing for the finale of a big community dance in Stockton town centre.

Lisa featured prominently in the first of six episodes of the programme, which alsoshowed the Diversity dance troupe at the care home rehearsing with Lisa, Heidi andLesley and chatting to residents and other members of staff.

Based on Wellburn Road in Fairfield, Stockton, Wellburn House is a purpose built care homethat provides specialist care for up to 90 elderly residents, some of whom have dementia.

Lisa Stephenson, Manager at Wellburn House, said: “From start to finish it was anabsolutely fantastic experience being involved with the show. It was particularly specialwhen Ashley and Diversity came to the home, we performed for the residents and thegroup took the time to meet and chat with the residents, which everyone really enjoyed.

“I think the show was an excellent opportunity for people to see what goes on behind theuniforms and badges of workers and it has brought many people from all different walksof life together.”

Residents at St Marks Court in Gatesheadhave supported UK soldiers serving inAfghanistan by sending the troopsshoeboxes full of useful and tasty gifts.

Residents enjoyed collecting and filling theboxes with toiletries, sweets, DVDs anddelicious treats and also sent the soldiersheartfelt personal messages.

The parcels were sent via Operation ShoeboxUK, a charity that acts as a conduit to deliver thedonated shoeboxes to UK troops in Afghanistan.Organised by a team of volunteers, OperationShoebox UK has sent over 55,000 shoeboxes tosoldiers in the past six years.

The residents and members of staff at StMarks Court were touched when they

received a lovely letter from one of thesoldiers thanking them for their kind efforts.In his message the soldier commented:“My team and I could not possibly thankyou enough for all your efforts! Morale wasdrastically increased yesterday when yourparcels arrived” and “people such asyourselves are the true heroes back home-without you our lives would be so muchharder. You made a lot of soldiers, milesfrom home, smile yesterday. Be proud ofyourselves.”

Nikki Coulson, Manager at St Marks Court,said: “The residents thoroughly enjoyedbeing involved with Operation Shoebox UK,which was a great way for us to show ourrespect and thank the soldiers for the

sacrifices they makeevery day. As severalof our residents areex- servicemen, thisproject was extraspecial andencouraged theresidents toreminisce anddiscuss their personalexperiences.

“The letter we received thanking us for ourparcels meant a great deal to the residentsto know that their shoeboxes had beenreceived and had brought a smile to thefaces of some of the troops- it left many ofus with a lump in our throats!”

Santa and hisreindeer visitedWordsworth House Wordsworth House care home in Jesmondheld a fun-packed festive fayre, whichraised £470 for extra treats for its residents.

Members of the community, residents andstaff at Wordsworth House welcomed Santaas the home’s VIP guest, who was joined bypony therapy miniature horse, Monet, fromK&L Pony Parties and Therapy, ‘dressed’ ashis reindeer.

There was also a raffle, the home’s famousodd stock tombola and stalls selling crafts,home baked cakes and refreshments.

Linda Gonzalez, Manager at WordsworthHouse, said: “Everyone had a fantastictime at the Christmas fayre. Our residentsloved the visit from Santa and his very cutereindeer and left us feeling very festive.”

Christmas carols at Bridge ViewChristmas was a very fun and busy timefor residents at Bridge View care homein Northumberland.

The home held lots of entertainment andactivities for residents, including a pantomimeby Lakeland Productions, a raffle, which raised£140 for the home’s comfort fund and carolsaround the ‘coal fire.’

Residents especially enjoyed gatheringaround the virtual fireplace with thecurtains closed and lights dimmedlistening to and singing along to Christmas

carols, followed by sherry, hot chocolateand mince pies.

Located on Ashington Drive, Bridge Viewcare home provides residential andnursing care for up to 61 elderly residents.

Irene Wallis, Manager at Bridge View carehome, said: “Christmas is a very specialtime and we like to make it as exciting forour residents as possible. Everyone had agreat time this Christmas and I’d like to saythank you to the staff for their dedicationand hard work.”

Residents support UK troops in Afghanistan

Stockton care home staff star in Sky1 show

Similarly, residents at Silver Lodge were joined by their husbands and wives for aromantic Valentine’s lunch.

Members of staff set up one of the home’s lounges as a restaurant and served a threecourse meal to the couples. Senior Carer, Jodie Renshaw, also made some cakes withthe couples’ names on to make it a little more personal for the happy couples.

The rest of the residents also enjoyed a Valentine’s themed lunch with the same threecourse meal in the home’s main dining room.

Based on Housley Lane in Chapeltown, Silver Lodge provides residential and dementiacare for up to 32 elderly residents.

Jayne Vickers, Manager at Silver Lodge, said: “We wanted to make Valentine’s Day reallyenjoyable for our residents and the meal was lovely- for one of the couples it was the first timethey had ever eaten out together for Valentine’s Day! It was really special for the couples whoare not always able to spend time together to be with one another for the day.”

St Marks CourtSt Marks Court in Gateshead held twodays of special activities.

Members of staff dressed up as fairyGodmothers for one day, grantingresidents their wishes and enjoyed a sing-a-long led by Carer, Maria Bain.

Residents spent the second day beingpampered with facials, manicures andpedicures.

Located on Split Crow Road in Deckham,Gateshead, St Marks Court care homeprovides nursing care, including dementiacare, for up to 60 residents.

Ayresome CourtYarm-based Ayresome Court held adigni-tea party, which was enjoyed byresidents and their relatives and alsoindividuals from a nearby supportedliving scheme.

Members of staff added leaves to thehome’s ‘dignity tree’, which is displayed inthe home and describes what dignitymeans to residents and went to work intheir pyjamas on the day to experiencewhat it feels like to lose their dignity.

Ayresome Court is a purpose built carehome that provides nursing care for up to43 elderly residents.

Ivy BankResidents at Birmingham-based Ivy Bankcare home were joined by special gueststo mark Dignity Action Day.

Students from Kings Norton Boys Schoolattended the day as part of their studiesand integration and communityparticipation. The students really enjoyedchatting with the residents and especiallyliked finding out about their lives before IvyBank and hearing about what they enjoy doing. The residents enjoyed the extracompany for the day and integrating with a younger generation!

The day finished with a game of bingo, which the residents and students enjoyed andeveryone tucked into cakes and refreshments made by staff.

The home and the school are working together to establish some of the studentsbecoming pen pals for the residents to keep their relationships going.

Based on Middleton Hall Road, Ivy Bank care home provides nursing care for up to 35elderly residents.

Princes CourtNorth Shields based Princes Court raised£65 for its comfort fund during DignityAction Day.

The home raised the money with a cakeand tea morning, which was enjoyed bystaff, residents and their families andfriends, and as part of the day, membersof staff were encouraged to experiencewhat it was like to be a resident.

Wordsworth HouseWordsworth House held a ‘Dignity Action Week’ with the themeof ‘memories.’

The home arranged activities based on reminiscence andmemories of days gone by, such as an old fashioned pub quizand the creation of rummage boxes for the dementia care unit.

A memory tree was placed in the home’s reception with tagsfor people to add their own personal messages to thebranches and a member of staff wrote a poem about thememory tree and what it means.

The home also opened the ‘Orchid Tea Room,’ which is in memory of the home’s muchloved friend and Nurse, Judith, who recently passed away. Judith loved orchids andmany staff members and residents have donated items for the tearoom so thememory of Judith will continue.

Ramping up the red for The British Heart Foundation St Peters Court in Wallsend raised £112.50 with a ‘Ramp up the Red Day’ tea party and raffle in aid of The British Heart Foundation.

The home decided to support the charity as senior staff member, Carol Young, suffered a heart attack two years ago, but hasthankfully made a full recovery.

Based on Church Bank, St Peters Court provides residential care, including dementia care, for up to 40 elderly residents.

Wendy Charlton, Manager at St Peters Court, said: “This is a charity very close to our hearts. We would like to thank everyone whodonated prizes for the raffle and we all had a great time while raising funds for an excellent cause.”

Supporting our local communities Akari Care has organised a companysponsorship programme with many of the39 homes across the UK providingsportswear to local primary schools andsports clubs.

Edgeley House care home, which is basedin Whitchurch, has supported the localjunior football team in Malpas by kitting outits players with football shirts.

The home donated the shirts to Malpas &District Junior Football Club, which has U11and U15 teams that play in the Chester &District Junior Football League.

Based on Edgeley Road, Edgeley Houseprovides nursing care for up to 60 elderlyresidents, some of whom also requiredementia care.

Members of Donisthorpe Primary School’sunder 11’s football team are ready for theirnext match wearing their brand new footballshirts, which were provided by Seale PasturesHouse, based in Acresford, Swadlincote.Matt Wainwright, 11, who plays for the team,said, “I’m sure we’ll win matches dressed inthese, I feel like a real professional.”

Seale Pastures House is a 40-bedresidential care home that provides carefor elderly residents.

Nantwich based Church House donatedsports tops to Sound and District PrimarySchool.

Based on Coole Lane, Church Houseprovides nursing care for 44 elderly residents.

The Court care home, which is based inOswestry, Shropshire, has supported twolocal primary schools.

The home donated hooded sweatshirts topupils at St Martins School, on OvertonRoad in Oswestry, and 30 polo shirts tochildren at Ysgol Y Waun school in Y Waen,Mold, which have been worn to footballtournaments and athletics events.

Debbie from St Martins School, said: “Thechildren and staff attending athletics eventshave had some very flattering commentsabout how smart and unified our childrenlooked. I cannot thank you enough for yoursupport in securing these hoodies for ourchildren - who are now looking smart andfeeling incredibly proud to be wearing them.”

Elmwood Primary School’s football teamreceived full football kits sponsored byMiddleton Hall Residential Home, which isbased in Manchester. The team playedtheir first football game of the season in thekit and were very pleased showing it off.

In Newcastle, Ashfield Court care homedonated t-shirts to 24 Year 5 pupils at IvyRoad Primary School and North FawdonPrimary School received football strips fromPark House care home to wear when theyrepresent the school at sporting events.

Located on Fawdon Lane, Park House CareHome offers nursing care for up to 50elderly residents.

Ashfield Court, which is based on GreatLime Road, provides residential care andElderly Mentally Infirm (EMI) residential carefor up to 46 people. Care is provided forolder people who have dementia.

Christina Ferry, Business Manager at NorthFawdon Primary School, said: “We have afairly large squad who all love the new stripand are desperate to wear it to representthe school!”

Gateshead-based St Marks Court suppliedfootball shirts, shorts, socks and agoalkeeper top to pupils at Carr HillCommunity Primary School in Gateshead.

Comfort House, which is located onMiddlegate, West Denton, donated fleecysweatshirts to Walbottle Rhinos footballteam, which is a boys’ team for childrenwith special needs.

The home provides care for 41 elderly residents.

Beech House Residential Care Home inSalford provided De La Salle FC’s U15'steam with football tops.

Beech House provides residential care forup to 33 elderly residents.

Wendy Rushton, Operations Director fromAkari Care, said: “As you can see from themany donations that Akari Care has made,we like our homes to get involved with theirlocal communities as much as possibleand decided that sponsoring local primaryschools and sports teams would be agreat way to show our support.

“We have had fantastic feedback from theschools and sports clubs and it is reallypleasing for everyone at the homes toknow that they are helping and engagingwith many children across the UK.”

Dignity Action Day in our care homesDignity Action Day is an annual opportunity for health and social care workers and members of the publicto uphold peoples’ rights to dignity and provide a truly memorable day for people who use care s ervices.

Cooking up a treat atFelmingham Old Rectory Residents at Felmingham Old Rectory enjoyed an afternoon of baking with the home’s Chef andespecially liked tasting the homemade fairy cakes and brownies afterwards during afternoon teawith their fellow residents.

Based on Aylsham Road in Felmingham, North Walsham, Felmingham Old Rectory is a converted periodhome that provides residential care for up to 36 elderly residents, some of whom have dementia.

Tracey Warnes, Manager at Felmingham Old Rectory, said: “As with all the Akari Care homes, lifestyleactivities are a very important part of the care we provide and we have a dedicated team that bringsfun, vitality and variety to our residents’ days.

“It was really rewarding to see the residents enjoying the baking, which was such a success that it willbecome a weekly activity at the home.”

Green-fingered residents at Newcastle-based Moorfield House are spending theirleisure time gardening thanks to ActivitiesCo-ordinator at the home, Karen Clark.

Karen started a gardening club for residentswho expressed an interest in the activityand organised sowing the seeds of theplants and flowers the residents said theywould like to see in the garden. When thetime is right, they will be separated and thehome will have a fantastic flower displayaround the outside of the building in potsand hanging baskets.

Based on Kenton Road in Gosforth,Moorfield House provides nursing care forup to 35 elderly residents.

Daniel Shutt, Manager at Moorfield House,said: “It will be very beneficial for ourresidents to see the beautiful flowers theyhave picked and planted and it’ssomething that everyone at the home canshare and enjoy.”

Pen pals inour homesOswestry-based care home, The Court, has set up a pen palservice to enable residents at Akari Care homes tocommunicate with one another.

Esther Kendall, resident at The Court, who has always wanteda pen-friend, has been paired with Diane Ward who residesat Middleton Hall care home in Manchester and theyfrequently exchange letters.

Based in West Felton, The Court provides nursing care for upto 36 elderly residents.

Middleton Hall, which is located on Grimshaw Lane inMiddleton, provides residential care for 24 elderly residents.

Anna Prichard, Manager at The Court, said: “It is important for our residents to participatein beneficial, stimulating and enjoyable activities on a daily-basis and the pen pal service has been agreat success.

“Esther is thrilled with her new pen friend and enjoys hearing from someone from another Akari Care home. On a recent day trip,Esther bought some new writing sets and notelets for the enjoyable job in hand, which indicates how much this service means to her.”

A fond farewell toretired ActivitiesCo-ordinator Members of staff and residents at AshfieldCourt in Newcastle said a fond farewell toActivities Co-ordinator, Carol Callaghan, whoretired after working at the home for 11 years.

The home held a special party for Carol,62, who started her career off as a careassistant, with refreshments, including afantastic cake, to give Carol a great sendoff and it was a very emotional day for all.

Karen Ankers, Manager at Ashfield Court, said:“Carol has been a much loved and valuedmember of staff. We would like to thank her forher hard work and determination throughoutthe years and all wish her luck in herretirement- but we will miss working with her!”

Sowing the seeds of gardening club

Wordsworthhouse workernamed ‘Carerof the Year’ Dawn Richards, a Carer at WordsworthHouse, has been named ‘Carer of theYear’, by The Co-operative Funeralcare.

Dawn, who has worked at the home for 18years, fought off strong competition fromCarers at 40 other homes in the Newcastlearea to receive the title.

Chris Anthony from The Co-operativeFuneralcare visited the home andpresented Dawn with a bouquet of flowers,vouchers and a certificate commendingher achievement.

Located on Clayton Road in Jesmond,Wordsworth House provides nursing care forup to 73 elderly residents.

Linda Gonzalez, Manager at WordsworthHouse, said: “Dawn is thrilled with her awardand we are all very proud of her. She reallydeserves to be named ‘Carer of the Year’ asshe has worked here for 18 years and doesa fantastic job. Dawn is an excellent leader,team player and a great support to all thenursing staff. She demonstrates exemplaryperson- centred care, treats residents withdignity at all times and always goes theextra mile supporting residents in her care.”

Chris Anthony, from The Co-operativeFuneralcare, said: “It was a real honourto present Dawn with her award, whichwas obviously well deserved and is afantastic achievement.

“Dawn epitomises what a carer should beand it was a great opportunity for everyoneat Wordsworth House and The Co-operativeFuneralcare to celebrate the excellentstandards of care that residents receive.”

Two members of staff in Tyneside havereceived special rewards for goingabove and beyond the call of dutyduring the festive period.

Members of staff from the 39 Akari homesthroughout the UK who worked all theirallocated or additional shifts duringDecember were entered into a prize drawfor the special bonus.

Margaret Sales, who is a care assistant atDene Park House in South Gosforth andhas worked at the home for just over ayear, and Nicola Watson who has workedas a care assistant at Coble House inWhitley Bay for nearly five years, won thedraw and were both surprised with abonus of £1500 for their hard work andcommitment throughout the busyChristmas period and for their dedicationto ensuring the residents enjoyed somefestive fun.

Based on Killingworth Road, Dene ParkHouse provides nursing and residentialcare for 51 elderly residents.

Coble House, which is located on North View,is a purpose built care home that providesnursing care for up to 52 elderly residents.

Wendy Rushton, Operations Director of AkariCare, said: “All of our members of staff arecommitted to providing high-quality careand work extremely hard, so we thoughtoffering a reward for their efforts would be agreat way to say thank you.

“The pair epitomise what carers shouldbe; they demonstrate exemplary person-centred care and treat residents withdignity at all times. We would like to thankall of our members of staff for doing agreat job and say a very well done toNicola and Margaret.”

Margaret said: “I was really shocked whenI was told that I’d won and I’m reallygrateful to Akari Care for the bonus, whichdemonstrates the company’sappreciation for my hard work.”

Nicola Watson said: “I’m really grateful forthe bonus and I’d like to say thank you toAkari Care for making me feel anextremely valued member of the team.The residents had a great time over thefestive period, which makes going theextra mile well worth it!”

Special guest joins resident’s 100th birthday celebration Philips Court care home welcomed the Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor Jack Graham, to celebrate residentJanet Thompson’s 100th birthday.

Janet, who has lived in Gateshead all her life, was presented with a bouquet of flowersfrom Councillor Jack Graham and received a card from the Queen.

The home held a special party to mark Janet’s milestone birthday, which was attendedby Janet’s daughter Sybil and son-in-law Alan, and included a big 100th birthday cakeand a performance by Mike Memphis aka Elvis Presley.

The party also celebrated five other residents’ birthdays; Mavis Huey (75), Molly Huscroft(79), Patrisha Farbridge (67), Norene Earl (87) and Brian Bradley (82).

Located on Bluebell Close, Philips Court provides nursing and residential care for up to70 people. Care is primarily provided for older people with dementia.

Karleen Taylor-Williams, Manager at Philips Court, said: “Everyone really enjoyed theparty for Janet’s birthday and it was fantastic to see her surrounded by her familyand friends. Janet is a much loved-resident, so it was lovely that everyone at the home,including the other residents celebrating their birthdays, were able to share her day.”

A birthday to remember thanksto Newcastle United FC Stan Lunn, a resident at Newcastle-based Charlton Court, enjoyed a 70th birthdayto remember thanks to Newcastle United Football Club.

Stan, who is one of the biggest Magpie fans going, was presented with a signedletter from Peter Beardsley MBE, former Newcastle United footballer and currentlythe club’s Football Development Manager, congratulating Stan on his birthday.

Charlton Court, which is based on Bristol Drive in Wallsend, provides nursing carefor up to 54 elderly residents.

Susan Drew, Manager at Charlton Court, said: “We were all absolutely thrilled withthe letter from Peter Beardsley, especially Stan, who has been a lifelong NewcastleUnited Football Club fan. The letter means an awful lot and he has it proudlydisplayed in his room.”

Peter Beardsley MBE said: “When the home contacted me about Stan’s birthday I had to do somethingspecial to let him know what a valued fan he is. It’s great to hear stories about people beinglife-long supporters and I hope Stan will continue to back the Magpies.”

70th wedding anniversary Silver Lodge celebrated resident Joyce Adams & her husband Ted Adams’ 70thwedding anniversary.

Joyce and Ted were joined by their family and friends on their special day and some ofthe home’s residents enjoyed cake and a drink with the happy couple.

Burns Night Princes Court held a special celebration to mark Burns Night.

The residents relished tasting traditional Scottish fare, which of course included haggis, andeveryone at the home would like to thank its talented cook, Eileen Falls, for creating such awonderful meal for the residents and their families.

Based on Hedley Road in North Shields, Princes Court provides nursing care for up to 75 elderly residents.
