Background
The EU needs to invest in high quality VET
to be able to supply the AI with qualified workers.
Aeronautics and air transport are key drivers of European cohesion
and competitiveness, representing 220 billion of Euros and providing4,5 million of jobs in Europe, a figure that could double by 2020.
The aeronautics industry (AI) acts globally and requires a high
qualified workforce not only for the positions related to engineering.
The increasing ageing of the EU population might influence the
availability of qualified personnel in EU and emerge in a skill shortage
for the sector.
Considering the characteristics of the Aviation Industrial sector, the
competition for the best workers takes place internationally. In this
context, mobility of workers is an undeniable reality and draws up new
challenges for the educational/training areas:
Improvement of the overall performance of education and training;
Close cooperation among VET* (Vocational Education and Training) systems from
different EU countries; Better balance between initial and continuous vocational training;
Full use of knowledge and skills acquired in both formal and non-formal settings.
*VET: Education and training which aims to equip people with knowledge, know-how, skills and/or competences
required in particular occupations or more broadly on the labour market.

AIRVETs main aim is to design, develop, evaluate and disseminate adapted/new
Aeronautic Industry (AI) curricula and VET (vocational education and training)
courses in the specific fields of Maintenanceand Information and Communications
Technologies (ICT), as these areas are the ones that need a higher number of
qualified personnel.
AIRVET in a Nutshell
AIRVET stands for Aeronautic Industry Skills Resolution for a more
Efficient VET Offer.
The project will:
Build up an Alliance of relevant actors in the (AI), bringing
together:
Bodies with AI specific expertise;
VET providers,
Bodies involved in education and training systems.
Work towards the improvement of the adequacy and attractiveness
of VET training offer addressed to the aeronautic sector
Sectorial Focus
The AIRVET will focus specifically on VET (Vocational Education and Training)
in the following main aeronautic sectors:
Air Traffic Management Airlines
Airports

AIRVET in detail
The AIRVET Alliance is a multidisciplinary consortium composed of 10 partners from
6 countries, representing 3 types of actors of key importance to the AI sector and to
the accomplishment of the objectives of the project:
Bodies with aeronautic expertise
VET providers
Bodies involved in education and training systems
All the partners share the common concern towards AI and VET, as well as the
relevance of the New Media and ICT technologies in this process.
Key Features
Type of project: Leonardo da Vinci Multilateral Project Development of Innovation
Duration: 24 months, from November 2013 to October 2015
Partners: 10 organisations from Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Poland, UK

To foster a close, open, informal dialogue and sustained interactions and networking
between: VET providers, aeronautic experts and bodies involved in education and
training systems;
To improve the knowledge and gather solid evidence from labour market intelligence
to identify skills needs within the AI;
To raise awareness of young people about future career paths in aeronautics, foster
science education and provide contact with different real work situations in the
aeronautic sector;
To review, create and improve the VET curricula and training programmes addressed
to the aeronautics industry, in order to better match with actual and future labormarket needs;
To contribute to the implementation of innovative ways of delivering VET, with a
special focus in the development of multimedia to increase skills and experience
with interactive training systems;
To promote the future sustainability and enlargement of the AIRVET sectoral alliance,
aiming at reaching a real and spontaneous attachment between the members and
attract and engage new members after the end of the project.
