Air Pollution Sorting Activity
(KS1 or KS2 appropriate)
Time required: 10 mins Equipment needed: Sets of cards Number of pupils needed: Individuals, pairs or small groups Aim: To inform children about the benefits of active travel and how plants are good for keeping our air clean. Objectives: To introduce pupils to the different ways in which we make our air dirty and to get them thinking about modes of transport that do not pollute our air. To highlight the value of plants as filters of air pollution that can keep our air clean. Instructions: Divide the pupils into groups or pairs and provide them with one complete set of cards. Ask them to separate the cards into two piles beside the cards marked ‘Clean air’ and ‘Dirty air’ depending on what they think the picture best fits with. Talk to the pupils about how they come to school and whether they are making the air clean or dirty. This can lead onto discussion about how travelling actively to school is good for the environment and also for keeping them fit and healthy.
