Tanks for Hydronic SystemsBladder TanksAmerican Wheatley offers a large range and several styles of bladder type expansion tanks.

The Wheatley WFA Series, ASME, full acceptance, top entry bladder tanks are offered in sizes from 36 gallon through 10,000 gallon. The WFA is ASME rated 150 psi through 220 gallon, and is ASME rated for 125 psi through 10,000 gallon The WFA is standard with a heavy duty replacement butyl rubber bladder. Tanks can be trimmed for potable water.

The Wheatley BDT Series, ASME, bottom entry, full acceptance bladder tanks are offered in sizes 13 gallon through 211 gallon. The BDT series is ASME rated for 150 psi, and is standard with a replaceable EPDM bladder. Tanks can be trimmed for potable water.

The Wheatley WBF Series, ASME, bottom entry full acceptance bladder tanks are offered in sizes 220 gallon through 10,000 gallon. The WBF series is ASME rated for 125 psi, and is standard with a replaceable heavy duty butyl bladder. Tanks can be trimmed for potable water.

All American Wheatley BDT, WFA, and WBF ASME tanks are standard with a replaceable bladder that is suitable for hydronic and domestic water services.

All American Wheatley ASME bladder tanks are PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA.

What is the function of the Tank in a Hydronic System? The tank could arguably be considered the most important component part to the hydronic system. The tank allows for thermal expansion within the hydronic heating or

Whether the tank is a bladder type, which contains the system fluid inside the bladder, isolating it completely from the air and prevents waterlogged tanks, or the plain steel type which absorbs the expansion while mixing the air and water, American Wheatley has the correct tank for your application.

Air SeparationAir is the single worst enemy to any hydronic heating system. Entrained air being present in any hydronic system can cause a myriad of problems, from cold areas due to the system being air bound, to premature equipment failures due to rust, scale, and corrosion. There are two ways to remove air from the system, by the use of an air scoop and by use of a centrifugal type separator.

Centrifugal TypeThe other most common type of air separator is also relatively simple in design and is commonly known as a centrifugal force type. This type of air separator utilizes tangential openings to create a centrifugal action required to create a vortex at the center of the vessel. The air, being lighter than water, is forced to the center of the vortex and rises to the top opening in the air separator where it is vented to atmosphere or directed to the expansion tank. This type of air separator also allows for a smaller vessel to be utilized than is required for a low velocity type.

American Wheatley offers our TAS Series less strainer and our TASS Series with removable stainless steel strainer. The TAS and TASS are available in sizes 2” through 30”.

As centrifugal force spins the air entrained water around the outside of the vessel, the air molecules are forced to the center of the vortex created, rises to the top of the vessel and is expelled through the air vent either to atmosphere or to a specified tank. While the operation seems simple, it is a must for all hydronic systems.

American Wheatley offers a tangential design that is constructed and stamped in accordance with ASME VIII, Division 1. They are also National Board registered and recognized.

American Wheatley tangential air separators are available in sizes 2” through 30” with standard carbon steel construction. The American Wheatley Tangential air separator is also available with an optional, removable, stainless steel strainer with 3/16” perforations. Standard construction of 2” through 8” is rated 150 psi, 10” and larger are rated 125 psi. Higher pressure ratings are available. American Wheatley air separators are also available in stainless steel construction. Consult factory for pricing.

Sediment RemovalAmerican Wheatley also offers a centrifugal type sediment removal separator. While the design is similar to the American Wheatley TAS Series air separator, the SRS sediment removal separator also offers the advantage of solids removal.

The tangential design allows for sediment removal through the vortex action, which forces suspended sediment to the outside of the vessel and into the bottom sump where it can be easily removed. The tangential action also creates a vortex that forces entrained air into the center, which is then removed through the top opening, vented to the atmosphere or sent to the expansion tanks.

Air Scoop / Air PurgersThe American Wheatley AS Series air scoop operates on the premise that air will rise in the piping and then into air scoop, being directed to the top opening and out of the system through an air vent or to an expansion tank. Since proper operation of this type of air separator is also dependant on velocity, sizing this type of air separator is a function of proper flow rate. This type of air separation is best suited for residential and light commercial applications. American Wheatley AS Series air scoops are readily available from stock.

    7

The American Wheatley HVAD high velocity and STAD standard velocity, coalescing type air & dirt Separator is intended for use on commercial HVAC, Institutional, and industrial applications to remove entrained air and particulate from the system water. American Wheatley utilizes a coalescing media consisting of 304SS high performance saddle rings. All American Wheatley are designed and constructed to ASME Section VIII, Division 1 standard. The American Wheatley HVAD & STAD series coalescing type air & dirt separator is capable of removing 99.6% free air and 99% of the measurable entrained and dissolved air with continuous circulation. Solids to 20 microns can be eliminated within 100 passes continuous circulation.

DESCRIPTION: American Wheatley ASME Chilled Water Buffer Tanks are designed for chilled water systems with insufficient water volume capacity, in relation to the chiller capacity. Relatively low water volume systems require additional “buffer” capacity for the system to eliminate problems such as excessive chiller cycling, poor temperature control, and erratic system operation. The properly sized American Wheatley CBT tank adds the necessary volume to “buffer” the system.

TYPICAL SPECIFICATIONS: Furnish and install as shown on plans, an ASME Chilled Water Buffer Tank as manufactured by American Wheatley HVAC Products. The tank shall in corporate a baffle to promote tank water storage temperature stratifica-tion. The system water connections must be ___ inch (NPT/flanged/grooved).

The tank must be constructed in accordance with most recent addition of Section VIII of the ASME Boiler and pressure Vessel Code. Each Chilled Water Buffer Tank shall be American Wheatley Model AWCBT- _______.

Dimensions are subject to change without notice, please confirm actual dimensions with factory at time of order.

Prevents flow in one circuit from interfering with flow from another circuit

Eliminates the need for a primary loop circulating pump, air separator, and strainer, thereby reducing initial cost as well as operating cost

Eliminates complicated piping, reduces labor and piping costs Sized for no more than 4 fps, low velocity in the vessel results in

low pressure drops Correctly installed hydraulic separation allows the use of

multiple circulators to operate independently without interfering with each other

Ideal for multiple load systems American Wheatley manufactures ASME hydraulic separators in

standard sizes 2” through 14”, ASME 125 Larger sizes and pressure ratings readily available
