How to enrol:

• Complete an enrolment form (pages 15 & 16) -1 form per student and pay the enrolment fee for 2020. This will secure your place in your classes of choice for the first week of term 1 2020 only. Term fees are due in week 2 of each term. Once enrolled, a student is automatically enrolled from term to term throughout the year unless the Principal is informed otherwise.

• We do not offer free trials. If a student would like to join a class the enrolment and full-term fee is payable when attending the second lesson. Please note that the enrolment fee must be paid if you wish to secure a place in a class – classes may become full if you wait to pay your enrolment fee in week 2.

• If you withdraw an enrolment before the end of a full term, you are still responsible for the entire term’s fees. This is because we limit our class sizes to ensure that all students receive the attention, they deserve in order to develop. In doing so we do turn away students from attending once classes are full – we do maintain waiting lists for students who miss out on class places.

Payments must be made by the end of week 2 of each term. Each student pays the term price listed next to their class/classes in the timetable. The enrolment for the 2020 calendar year is $55. No further discounts apply.

JUNIOR GRADE 1 / 2 TEST 3 Approximately 7-9yrs of age (Age 6 if Primary exam or class award completed) Junior Jazz is intended for students in grades 1 & 2 ballet or equivalent. Grade 2 ballet is for students who have taken their grade 1 exam or class award.

INTERMEDIATE/ SENIOR

GRADES 3 AND HIGHER

BRONZE STAR AND HIGHER

Higher grades are for students who have progressively worked through the syllabus. Students who are successful in exams move on to the next level after completing each exam. Students who do not take part in exams often need more time in each grade before moving to the next level as exam students have more learning time with teachers at the additional exam classes. Intermediate Jazz is intended for students in grade 3 & 4 ballet or equivalent.

# Ages listed are for students who have previously trained consistently with Centre Stage School of Dance. New students and students returning after a break from dancing will be graded into classes according to ability and experience. Please discuss which level to start in with Miss Leanne. Beginners may find joining a class with younger students is better suited to their abilities and therefore is more rewarding. Struggling to keep up with experienced dancers who are the same age as you when you are a beginner is not good for self-esteem. For example, a student who is 8 years old and who has trained since age 3 already has 5 years training – expecting to be at the same level because you are the same age is unrealistic- please discuss your goals with Miss Leanne so you can join a class that will be suited to achieving your goals. Special Conditions Pointe Students participating in Pointe class must attend at least two ballet classes per week (in addition to the Pointe class) in order to build the strength and correct weight placement required for safe Pointe work. Intermediate/Advanced students who have already built strength and control can choose to attend one ballet and one Pointe class if desired. Ballet syllabus classes All ballet exam students are required to attend their two weekly classes. The additional class includes a national character component (except in Primary). Students attending the two scheduled grade classes for their level are able to attend additional ballet examination classes (lower grades) for further training with no additional fees payable. NB. If the additional classes are disadvantaged by the attendance of additional students this offer will be revoked (at the discretion of the ballet teacher and/ or studio principal). Attendance at higher grades may also be approved on request. This offer also applies for tap and jazz classes at the discretion of the studio principal.

Uniforms Please make an effort to wear correct studio uniform to all classes. Wearing a uniform helps students to prepare mentally for their class, allows free movement when dancing and makes it easier for teachers to observe and therefore help students improve. Girl’s uniform Correct dance shoes, a leotard and pair of ballet tights (or tan for other styles if preferred) are the correct uniform for all types of classes. Any other dance attire is OPTIONAL and is not a requirement. Leotard colours are:

• Pale pink for students in Pre-school up to Primary classes • Berry or Mulberry for students in Junior classes (Ballet Grades 1-2) • Teal or Berry for students in Intermediate classes (Ballet Grades 3-4) • Plum, Teal or Black for students in Senior through to Advanced classes (Grade 6 +)

Boy’s uniform Black or white singlet with black shorts/tights. Shoes Wearing the correct dance shoes is essential for learning correctly in dance. Students will not be permitted to dance in socks or stockings as they become very slippery and can be dangerous:

• Ballet – leather ballet shoes (pink for girls, black or white for boys). Grade 3 and above have the option of wearing ribbons. Please tighten your shoes with the front narrow elastic, double knot it then trim the excess elastic so there are just a few centimetres remaining. This makes the front elastic easy to tuck in. Please do not wear the front elastic in a bow – this is a trip hazard.

• Character - small heel for Grades 1 & 2, Cuban heel for Grades 3 onwards.

• Pointe - Pointe shoes required for Pointe classes AFTER YOU HAVE BEEN ASSESSED BY THE TEACHER FOR READINESS FOR POINTE. Please discuss purchasing your pointe shoes with Miss Leanne when the time comes.

• Tap – tap shoes (tan buckle up for girls, black lace-ups for boys). Please do not buy tap shoes with high heels; lower heels make heel beats much louder. Tap shoes with pre-adjusted loose fitting taps are available for purchase from the school.

• Jazz – jazz shoes (tan for girls, black for boys). Jazz sneakers are not encouraged as they do not promote full stretching and strengthening of your feet, they also make sliding difficult.

• Contemporary – bare feet or foot thongs. This is so you are able to grip the floor when required.

• Hip Hop – jazz shoes or plain sand shoes Optional extras

• Pre-school up to Pre-Junior classes (Up to Primary Ballet). Pale pink sheer wrap skirt. Pale pink cross-overs for winter. Tight fitting black shorts for tap/ jazz. Dance socks can be substituted for ballet stockings if desired.

• Junior through to Pre-senior classes (Ballet Grades 1-5). NO SKIRTS AT ALL – PLEASE WEAR TIGHTS TO ALL CLASSES. Cross-overs for winter. Tight fitting black shorts for tap/ jazz/ hip hop/ contemporary.

• Senior through to advanced classes (Intermediate Foundation – Advanced). NO SKIRTS AT ALL – PLEASE WEAR TIGHTS TO ALL CLASSES. Cross-overs for winter. Tight fitting black shorts for tap/ jazz/ hip hop/ contemporary.

• Hip Hop only, girls can wear a baggy plain black or white top (or studio T-shirt) with tight fitting black short or ¾ pants. Basic class uniform (leotard and tights) is also acceptable.

Hair Hair should be worn in a bun for all classes. Students will find it easier to concentrate and use their head properly. If hair is short it can be neatly presented or a head band can be worn (head bands to match leotard colour). Girls with very short hair and/or Boys hair need to be neat and tidy with hair off the face. Jewellery Please do not wear jewellery to class. It can be dangerous or could become damaged or lost. Second Hand Items The school provides a second-hand shoe and uniform pool. The honesty system applies. Those wishing to sell second hand items can place clearly labelled and bagged items in the second-hand boxes at the studio (include your name, the amount you are asking for and the item size if known). Those wishing to purchase items are welcome to look through the box and try items on. Items can only be taken home after the items have been paid for. Please pay the teacher at the studio the correct amount for the item you wish to purchase. The money will be passed on to the family selling. Centre Stage School of Dance Logo Uniforms I am currently in the process of developing a studio jacket with the new logo and possibly some additional uniform items. A group order will be placed in early 2020. I would like all students representing our school at competitions to wear this uniform. This uniform will be available to all students.

Further Development Dance Examinations We offer examinations in the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Syllabus and the Les Griffith Tap Dancing Academy (LGTDA) Syllabus. We offer dance exams in order to maintain and continually improve the standard of dance at our school. Following a syllabus means that you are taught in proved and tested method of progression. It also means that your teacher has met the requirements needed to teach that syllabus and an examiner not affiliated with the school will assess your level. We believe that taking part in dance exams is extremely beneficial to students as they are motivated to achieve a higher standard. We know from past experience that hard working students go on to progress and achieve their personal best and taking part in an exam can be an excellent tool on this journey. Please consider your motivation for taking dance class prior to committing to dance exams. Additional focus and some practice at home can leave some students feeling bound while for most students this is a time to flourish and achieve goals. Please see the exam newsletters to find out more about the commitment needed to take part in a dance examination – these will be available early term 1. We do not offer exams in other styles of dance as we feel they evolve too quickly to in today’s technological world. This gives us more flexibility to keep up with current trends while maintaining the fundamentals of other styles such as Jazz, Hip Hop and Contemporary. Performance Team Performance Team is a great way for students to excel in dance and performance. I do expect a high

level of commitment from team members. I expect that those who have committed to the team

attend all practices above social events and do some practice at home. To be part of a performance

team you need to express your interest via the enrolment form or directly to Miss Leanne. Our

performance teams usually enter approximately 4 local eisteddfods each year. Dates will be provided

as soon as possible and attendance is compulsory. In order to be eligible to take part in a performance

team, dancers need to meet the following training requirements:

Tap/ Jazz stream – it is compulsory for students in tap/jazz stream performance teams to attend at

least 1 ballet class per week. This to assist students with posture, core strength, arm placement,

flexibility, stamina and turn out. Students also need to attend a class in either tap and/or jazz

depending on the routine being prepared.

Ballet stream - it is compulsory for students in ballet stream performance teams to attend at least 2 ballet classes per week (in addition to the performance team class). This is to help prepare students with the technique, strength, stamina and flexibility required for eisteddfod performance. Private lessons Our school offers private lessons for students who would like to compete as a soloist or in a duo/trio at eisteddfods. Private lesson students are expected to have a strong commitment to dance. Lessons to help students with technique are also available. Please enquire with Miss Leanne to discuss.

Etiquette and culture Communication Please read your newsletters thoroughly as they are the main form of communication between teachers and families regarding the school’s activities. Please advise Miss Leanne of your email address on your enrolment form. Newsletters are also available on our website. We are very keen to earn and keep the trust and support of all the families who are part of our school. Please discuss any issues you are experiencing with the school principal. We understand that everyone is interested in the way in which the school is run and I appreciate your feedback. Without feedback we are not able to respond to your needs. We also hope you understand that it is necessary for the teachers to make the final decision. Respect We expect all students, teachers, family members and guardians to act in a respectful manner towards each other. This includes in person and on social media. The culture at our school is supportive and friendly creating an atmosphere conductive to learning and development. Viewing classes The viewing of classes is not permitted. Parents/ Guardians can watch the first class to ensure students are settled (up to 3 weeks for students of pre-school aged students if needed). Open days will be held for each class at the ends of terms 1 and 3. The mid-year display, end of year concert, creative dance challenge and improvisation challenge are great opportunities to see your child’s progress in dance and celebrate their achievements. Class start times Students are asked to wait in the hall way area until their class starts. This is so students finishing off their lesson are able to concentrate and not be distracted by students coming in. This gives the teacher the ability to escort their class to the door and see who is there to collect them. The teacher can then welcome the next class into the room. Student photos and video footage Photographs or video recordings may be taken in class or at performances throughout the year. By enrolling at Centre Stage School of Dance, you give permission for us to use photographs or video recordings of your children for promotional and advertising purposes. Working parents If you are using the before and after school care –Woy Woy we may be able to arrange for your child to attend class while you are still at work. Please enquire if you have a child who is keen to dance but your work commitments are making this difficult. Before and after school care are currently bringing a number of students to classes and we are returning the students back to after school care when they are finished. Please note, this needs to be pre-arranged and does depending on staff availability. Alternatively, students can be brought to class by after school care and then collected at the end of class by their parents if that is more convenient.

Health and Safety All tuition is given following safe dance practices. Dance like other physical activities can be physically demanding. Please notify the school principal in writing if your child has any recurring medical condition/s that staff should be made aware of. Staff at Centre Stage School of Dance take the safety of all students very seriously and will endeavour to ensure the highest safety standards are adhered to at all times. Dance/Fitness classes can involve a risk of personal injury and Centre Stage School of Dance accepts no responsibility for any injury caused during activities at the studio or any associated performance/competitions. It is the individuals or Parent/Guardians responsibility to ensure that the enrolled students are physically and medically fit for class and Performances. Please be advised that first aid will be given to your child in the event of an accident/injury whilst involved in dance activities. You will find that we are among a few dance schools who do not offer ‘acro’ classes. While commercial dance is getting confused with gymnastics in the media, I believe that dancers are able to show their strength, flexibility and coordination in a dance specific fashion without the need for ‘acro’ tricks. I hope to see a resurgence of ‘dance’ as an art form and less ‘crowd pleasing tricks’ as parents come to the realisation of the dangers involved in some of the trending ‘acro’ tricks. I suggest that students who wish to learn acrobatics join a gymnastics club. You can then expect to be coached in a purpose-built facility with a proper gymnastics floor (not matts put on top of a dance floor) by staff who specialise in gymnastics (not dance teachers who teach gymnastics on the side) and who have smaller student to teacher ratios. Gymnastics is a highly regulated sport and I don’t feel as a part-time dance school I can offer the same level of quality for tuition in ‘acro’. I feel some students at some other dance schools are being exposed to unsafe practices. I do not feel the performance surfaces dancers are offered safely cater for many of the ‘acro’ tricks currently in commercial dance. Physically dancers and gymnasts’ bodies differ greatly yet a lot of dancers are being asked to perform the same ‘acro’ tricks in a less safe environment – I fear for the injuries that the next generation of dancer’s being poorly trained in ‘acro’ will sustain and compel you to make a wise choice in regards to this emerging trend. Parents and guardians are requested to collect children promptly from the waiting area at the studio entry at the end of each lesson. Please be aware that the waiting area is outside the studio in the community centre hall which is a public space. There will be minimal supervision for students waiting between classes. Teachers will be primarily focused on teaching the students in classes rather than supervising students waiting.

• Parents and Guardians of Primary School aged students – Children must be supervised at all times and must not leave the dance studio unless supervised by an adult. This means that young students (primary school aged) will need to be either walked into the centre and to the dance studio or dropped off and watched as they enter the dance studio via the side access door (on the same side of the centre as the Woy Woy Community Childcare Centre).

• Teaching staff are responsible for the safety of the students in classes and are unable to ensure individual students cross the road and get to the car park safely.

• Older students (high- school aged) must wait inside the glass door to be picked-up (this applies to the front door and the side door next to the dance studio). When dropping off, please make sure classes are definitely on and the teacher is in attendance (I will make every effort to contact you should classes be cancelled/changed – this is a highly unlikely event).

All students must bring a bottle of water to all classes to ensure they remain hydrated.

Annual concert Our end of year is usually held in December or November at Laycock Street Theatre (Concert newsletters released from term 2 onwards will provide further information). Participants in the annual concert can expect the following:

• Purchase of costuming. The costume fee and concert photo fee will be included in term 3 and 4 fees. This will not be a separate fee as in previous years.

• A dress rehearsal (in full costume), usually two weeks prior to the concert date.

• A stage rehearsal (this is likely to be on a school day as the local theatre has limited rehearsal times available to dance schools – this is a compulsory rehearsal).

• Payment of a rehearsal fee (approximately $66) that covers the dress rehearsal, on-stage rehearsal, block week rehearsals and a DOWNLOAD OF THE EOY CONCERT! (access to download and save what is normally contained on the concert DVD – Ordering the same content on a physical DVD will come at an additional charge for those who still prefer a physical DVD. Please note the HD quality of the download better than that supplied on a physical DVD).

• Students in the Tap Opening (exam students), Classical Finale (exam/students taking multiple weekly ballet classes) and the National Character routines will have an additional rehearsal charge of approximately $30 to cover all of the additional weekend rehearsals for these routines.

• Other costs at concert time include concert tickets – available from Laycock Street Theatre approximately one month prior to the concert for those wishing to watch the performance. Additional concert photos are available to buy directly from the companies supplying the service.
