AIESEC UA proudly presents: NatCo 2014!
Dear delegates, welcome to NatCo 2014!
NatCo is the last conference of the National Conference Cycle. A great way for
the old EB’s to finish their year of hard work with a bang! The current EB should
ensure a powerful transition.
And for the new EB elects, NatCo is the ideal opportunity to network with all
the EB’s of Belgium & gain valuable knowledge how to plan out the next term.
This national event is where the road for another unforgettable year of AIESEC
starts.
This year, NatCo is depicted by an airways logo, in the centre there’s a globe
coloured with the tricolored flag of Belgium. This represents the international
character of AIESEC, but on Belgium soil. AIESEC is an organisation that will
always tend to go the distance and spread their wings. Creating the next
generation of leaders requires an open vision and the determination to do your
very best in every single challenge you embrace in life.
Be a leader. Go the distance!

The Champagne cantus
The Champagne cantus is one of the AIESEC UA classics and after the great
success of previous year we are excited to announce a second edition. Let’s
drink to that!
A cantus is an event where students come together to sing
traditional Dutch, Latin, English, French and German songs (like
“What shall we do with the drunken sailor?”, “My Bonnie” and “My
Sarie Marais”), which are written down in a student “Codex”, all
while drinking an (non‐) alcohol beverage (of course we prefer the
alcohol way).
For this cantus, the general drink will be champagne. You can drink as much
champagne as you would like for the entire duration of the cantus, but don’t
underestimate your limits.
Never been to a cantus in your student career? Don’t worry! We’ll hand out a
booklet containing all songs that we are going to sing that evening.
A cantus is a great way to bond with all the LC’s present at the conference and
is a tradition that goes back more than 100 years with songs that were written
down in the Middle Ages still sung at cantusses today!
But beware; a cantus isn’t like a regular party! You have to follow some
traditional rules and have to stick to these rules for the entire cantus. Some of
NatCo 2014 9
the basic rules will be explained here and additionally the cantus booklet will
contain all rules for the evening.
First and foremost: champagne is a holy drink and you must treat it with
respect! It is not allowed to spill it, pour it away or throw it around. The only
option is to pour it into your oesophagus.
A cantus is always presided by a senior (i.e. the person responsible for keeping
order) and a cantor (i.e. the person who chooses which songs will be sung).
During the cantus, some old formal rules, mainly in Latin, are used. Here’s
some vocabulary to get you started:
“Silentium”: means silence. When this is said or shouted, everybody
must immediately be silent and listen to the senior. If you aren’t
silenced, you will be punished! The senior can also use a hammer to
make his point even more clear.
“Corona” is everyone who participates in the cantus. This word can be
used in a variety of ways, for example: when the cantor says that the left
corona sings the first strophe, only the people at the left are allowed to
sing the first strophe.
“Senior, peto verbum”: It is NOT allowed to talk directly to the senior.
You always ask the “right to speak” by saying “senior, peto verbum”. He
then replies by “Habes” or “Non Habes”. “Habes” means you have the
right to speak while “Non Habes” means you aren’t allowed to say
something an have to sit down again. You can’t object the decision made
by the senior.
“Ad sedes”. If the senior says “Ad sedes”, it is the corona’s task to go and
take a seat. Whilst you are doing this you answer in unison “Sedimus”.
Also, remember to knock on the table instead of applauding. NEVER applaud at
a cantus!
₪ NUNC EST BIBENDUM TOTA NOCTA ₪
Everything (including the rules provides here) will be explained before we start,
so don’t worry if this sounds confusing or difficult.
NatCo 2014 10
A cantus: an event full of tradition and singing, a great way to meet new people
and bond with other LC’s. It’s an event you can’t and mustn’t miss! Maybe it
even helps you to overcome your fear to talk with the woman of your dreams.
Everything can happen at a cantus…
After the awesome and traditional Champagne Cantus we will continue the
party and make that night worthy of remembrance. We’ve chosen vacation and
holiday as theme so get your ski outfit or surfboard from the attic and dress
yourself like you are taking a long break on a sunlit isle in the Mediterranean or
going on short track vacation in the Alps… There are an infinite amount of
possibilities! Surprise us!
