Introduction:• AIDS (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or acquired

immunodeficiency syndrome) is a disease caused by a virus called HIV

• AIDS is the syndrome which appears in advanced stages of HIV infection.

• There are three main stages of HIV infection: > acute infection, > clinical latency > AIDS

Transmission of AIDS:

• Sexual• Body Fluids• Mother-to-Child• Blood Transfusion• Contaminated hypodermic needles

History:

• HIV originated in west-central Africa during the early twentieth century.

• AIDS was first recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1981 and its cause—HIV infection—was identified in the early part of the decade

• Since its discovery, AIDS has caused nearly 30 million deaths
