Too much “getting in” and not enough “getting on?”
AGR Conference July 2014
“Employability v Careers”
- “Employability” in HE relies too heavily on skills shopping lists and box ticking. - Over the years, we have all colluded in
this to some degree. - Result-too many students with
impressive lists of transferrable skills but no career focus-content without context.
The impact inside HEIs
- Internal skills industries with varying degrees of expert guidance. Sometimes seen as anti-academic and translating into weary box-ticking. - Shopping list matching to “make”
students “employable” - But the university/student relationship is
a partnership not a transaction.
Time for a re-think
- Subverting rather than using the core academic experience? - Researching, comparing/contrasting,
synthesising, concluding-applying these to choosing and developing a career - Understanding career success not just
threshold “employability.” Content and context.

Having an employer involved directly in my Entrepreneurship module opened my eye to career opportunity I haven’t thought of and because I was able to demonstrate my skills in action vs. on a CV gave me a competitive edge into a potential career.
