Vocabulary and Phrase Notes: •“a-buzz”, buzzing- sounds of a lively atmosphere

The school was buzzing with the sounds of laughing children.

•“turbo-”- an extremely large device.

Use the turbo-vacuum cleaner to clean up that mess.

•Belting out – singing loudly, can be positive or negative

She must have taken many lessons! She can really belt out a tune.

•Culture shock- disorientation one feels when experiencing an unfamiliar way of life. Can be experienced in a new country, or social environment change

When we first arrived in Canada, our family had severe culture shock. We didn’t understand the language, the weather was so cold, we couldn’t find good Chinese food anywhere and we were so disoriented to where everything was located.

•Nursing home- type of residential care for elderly people where elderly can receive assistance with activities. Of daily living (toileting, washing, dressing, eating)

Different than hospices (where one can receive end of life care) or retirement home (where the elderly live independently with

minimal assistance)
