Ivan R. Schwab, MD, FACS, is Professor Emeritus at the University of California Davis. He has served as an ophthalmologist specializing in cornea, external disease and uveitis for more than 30 years. His long-standing interest in biology and natural history led him to investigate a diverse range of topics, including ocular stem cells, bioengineered tissues for the eye and comparative optics and physiology. During his distinguished career he has been on the editorial board of several leading ophthalmology journals and was a director for the American Board of Ophthalmology. In 2012, he received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Schwab wrote Evolution’s Witness: How Eyes Evolved, which emphasizes comparative ophthalmology.
