Information and adviceHaving the correct information is the best way of making the right choices and keeping control of our lives as we get older.

Could one of Age UK’s Information and Advice leaflets provide the information you need? Our leaflets deal with a wide range of topics related to money matters, health and wellbeing, home and care, work and learning, and travel and lifestyle. Come in for a confidential chat with one of our advisers. Our drop-in service is open 10am–12 noon, Monday to Friday.

Our NewsOpen DayThanks to everyone who came along to our Open Day on Saturday 14 April. We celebrated 40 years as an Age Concern supporting older people in Todmorden, and also our re-launch as Age UK Todmorden. A good time was had by all and the rainbow cake was very popular.

The national charities Age Concern England and Help the Aged merged two years ago to form one charity to support older people. We’re now a partner of the national charity but remain an independent local charity.

As Age UK Todmorden, we intend to provide the same service as we always have, but better than ever!

Knit and NatterKnit and Natter, our sociable knitting group, is now held at Waterside Lodge (opposite Morrisons) every Wednesday, 1.30–3pm. By popular request we’ve decided on weekly meetings, although posters around town state that it will be held fortnightly. Bring along some knitting if you have some, or just bring yourself. There will be people on hand to get you started and you can pick up new tips and methods from fellow knitters – and see how it is done on the continent! Complete beginners welcome.

Other NewsFloods: be prepared!Flood warning sirens in Walsden, Todmorden, Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd will sound on Thursday 7 June as part of the Environment Agency’s annual maintenance tests. Environment Agency Engagement Officer Graham Lindsey said: “It is important that we test these sirens to check that they are working properly and can be triggered remotely from our incident room in Leeds.

Have a flood plan to keep you and your family safe. For more information, visit www.environment-agency.gov.uk or call Floodline 0845 988 1188.

The sirens complement the Environment Agency’s free Floodline Warnings Direct service, which sends an automatic message by landline, mobile, email or fax to those who have signed up, telling them when river flooding is imminent. The agency is also progressing a flood alleviation scheme along Walsden Water from Shade to Central Todmorden in 2012–13.

Extra Support for People with DementiaFour new Alzheimer’s Society support groups have recently started in Hebden Bridge as part of their expansion of services in Calderdale. Services on offer include new Carers Support and Living with Dementia groups, as well as Dementia Cafés being set up alongside existing groups in Calderdale.

Dementia Cafés provide a meeting placefor people with dementia and their carers. There’s a charge of £2 for the café including refreshments. All the groups are facilitated by a trained staff member.
