Background AFR100 is a pan-African, country-led initiative to bring 100 million hectares of degraded lands into restoration by 2030.
AFR100 works within the framework of the African Resilient Landscapes Initiative (ARLI)
Contributes to the Bonn Challenge and New York Declaration on Forests among other targets
Problem Statement for Africa
3 Mha/yr of forest are lost; approx. 65% of land in Africa is affected by degradation
Approx. 6 Mha/yr productive land lost to degradation 2nd highest deforestation rate in the world Forest loss and degradation exacerbated by CC;
poor land management threaten ecological functions vital to African economies
Governance of natural resources does not favour restoration at scale and numerous barriers impede progress
Forest landscape restoration (FLR) in Africa
AFR100 recognises benefits that forests and trees provide in African landscapes: o it is about securing livelihoods o It is about energy security o It is about agricultural productivity o It is about the appropriate trees in appropriate places.
