In Your Words…In Your Words… I realized that I am

very lucky because I have a shelter, food, a family, love and everything I need. I used to take things for an advantage, but now I know that kids in Africa don't have the same oppurtunities as we do. - Maria

We need to save thoses kids from being brain washed. - Matt A

When i saw that movie it was so sad seeing all of those people suffer. I would hate having to be

worried everyday to not being killed or abducted. They are human beings also. Its not like we are any

different from them. - Joe

Stopping the RebelsStopping the Rebels

I think that the only way to stop the rebels is to send in our military. Normally I would say something like, "We need to negotiate peacefully." Obviously that wouldn't work with the rebels because they are too violent. Also, sending in a representative would just get that person shot, killed, or held hostage. - Justin

Stopping the RebelsStopping the Rebels

We are already in a war, so it would seem foolish to send our own troops to Africa. There also may be that possibility of Africa turning against us. I think that it is not the USA’s responsibility to fight the rebels. The African countries surrounding Uganda need to come together and find a solution to this problem. - Jenny

AbductionsAbductions In America a child gets abducted. The

ploice are informed and a regional or national alert is issued. Radio stations begin broadcasting descriptions, while TV stations flash pictures of both the abductor and abducted across the screen. Billboards along major roads flash important information regarding the abduction. The police move out in force with helicopters and planes and the Army National Guard may even be called. Everything is put into operation to bring a child home to its family. - Max

AbductionsAbductions

I don't really think that there is a way to get your child back, unless he were released or he escaped. I would hope that my son didn't cry because they might kill him. I would hope and pray that he didn't get brainwashed. They put those children on drugs and things that are nessacery if you want to brainwash them. Then they have to go to a rehabilitation center, like Unicef has one I think. - Caitlin

I would be very upset if my son got adducted. But I don’t think there is places were you could look to find your son. So I would be very unhappy. - Meghan

Child SoldiersChild Soldiers Then destroy them in away whether by a physical

way or an emotional way. I think that this needs to be put to an end right this second. the LRA leader is an evil corrupted dictator that is ruining the world we live in. - Ben M

The LRA leader told a child to pray before he went into battle, for if he did not, he would be killed. These children are young. they will believe what they are told. They are told that the war is a necessity, and they believe. They think that death is normal. They are taught to believe that the cause is more important than life. - Arthur

WildlifeWildlife Wow! I never thought about what the animals are

going through in Africa. I can’t believe that there is so many animals instinct in just Madagascar, and that there were so many different types of species! - Marley

All the animals in Africa roam wild so many people kill these animals for food and money. - Sam

DarfurDarfur The genocide in Darfur has claimed

400,000 lives and displaced over 2,500,000 people. More than one hundred people continue to die each day; five thousand die every month. - Nick B

I think that one reason the U.S. isn't doing anything is because our government doesn't see it as a big threat to us. In my research I learned that every month 10000 more people die. - Henry

DarfurDarfur I find it quite ironic that this can

happen so frequently. After the Holocaust, we made a universal promise. Together, we said never again. Never again would we allow an entire race to be"exterminated." We said never again, yet this very second someone is being killed. This very second, someone will never again know what it means to live. - Hannah

Effects of ColonizationEffects of Colonization I think these countries became so poor and third

world because of their colonization. When we learned about Africa's independence dates, we saw how many of the European countries used up many of Africa's natural resources. We also know that this ruined the economy, and I don't think many of the countries ever recovered.- Alex G

Colonization has hurt a lot of the African countries. I think Europeans a job in Africa. They were just there to strip them of their natural resources. They didn't do enough to better the colonies and they were too enforceful upon the African colonies. Then, they just up and left. I think Africa was not prepared to govern themselves when the Europeans left. - Max

HungerHunger If we could reduce the whole human race to 10 children sitting

around a table:3 would have plates that are heaped so high that they

will never possibly finish what is there.2 will just about manage to live by scavenging what is

thrown away from the three.3 will be permanently hungry2 will die, one of dysentery and one of pneumonia. -

Hannah

I didn’t know that how much food we were throwing away could really add up into something! I think that most of the three children with too much food represents America because we take everything for granted. I really think that when we go to throw something out, we should really think about what we could do to not waste what we could benefit from. - Jenna

What do you think that the rest of the world can do to help the african people that are starving? - Rodrigo

HungerHunger The Heifer Foundation is an organization

that gives family in need animals to use for milk, eggs, etc. They give these families the animals to use as a resource, not to kill. The overall goal of the organization is to have all of the animals given to people to breed and for the families to give the young animals to other families and so on and so forth until everyone in need has at least one animal to provide food. - Ellie

Oprah’s Leadership Oprah’s Leadership AcademyAcademy

Oprah Winfrey opened Oprah Winfrey’s Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. This school is full of

luxury! It is spread out on 22 acres, has 28 buildings, the finest artwork and architecture, has a beauty salon, several

movie theaters etc. - Livvy

Although 180 (the number attending the school) may be small, it can still make a difference as more generations of girls go through the school. - Alex G.

There are many male African leaders and male dominated areas right now, and Oprah wanted to put the influence on young women. Oprah's vision was to find 152 young women who had the potential to be future leaders. - Sarah

Idol Gives BackIdol Gives Back A two night event called "Idol Gives Back" took place on 4/24/07 and 4/25/07. It not only featured some of the most popular talent today, but it was for a good cause. All of the money raised was to go to Africa and poverty struck areas all across

America, including New Orleans. - Sarah

Idol Gives BackIdol Gives Back I think the Idol Gives back was a great event because it

helped so many people. They were discussing malaria one of the nights of Idol Gives back, and it only costs around two dollars to save the lives of four children! - Nick D

I think this event is very interesting and nice of those people to donate about 100 million dolars to africa cause then the kids there would get lots of food and shelter even an education for them. - Matt H.

The ConnectionThe Connection What links all of the problems together? - Mori I think that all the problems are linked together

by the lack of a goverment that cares for it's people and speacialy the money. Not one country in Africa is classified as a rich country. These places need money and fast. I don't think that the problems in Africa will end no matter how many of them are solved there will always be one that is destroying the country or killing people and animals. - Rodrigo

Disease - AIDS/MalariaDisease - AIDS/Malaria That many people dieing each day because of

poverty shows me how lucky I am to be living in America and having all of the things I have. I knew that a lot of people were dieing from the HIV virus, but I didn’t know that more than 12 million kids have lost at least one parent because of it. That is really sad. - Naveed

I am amazed how powerful the problems in Africa are. Africa seems so undeveloped and unstable. I just am having so much trouble thinking that as I write this someone is dieing of malaria in Africa and as of this moment right now I cannot do anything about it. I feel baffled how anyone can tackle this problem. It seems so impossible to stop. - Matt Q

Page 23: Africa Reflections Everyone always thinks of Africa as if they live in another world, but they actually don’t. - Ellie.

Disease - AIDS/MalariaDisease - AIDS/Malaria Something we could do to help this

problem not get any worse is that we could teach people the dangers of not having safe sex. We could send people do there to tell everybody in Africa how to prevent people getting HIV/AIDS. - Jeb

In America, next to no people have malaria the fact that one child dies due to malaria every thirty seconds shocked me. Malaria is a disease that is almost completely unknown here in America. - Reed

HOPEHOPE As bad as the conditions As bad as the conditions

might be, the people still might be, the people still find hope and love in their find hope and love in their families and friends. Even families and friends. Even though they sometimes though they sometimes don't even get one meal don't even get one meal in a day, they continue on in a day, they continue on with their lives and find with their lives and find ways to enjoy ways to enjoy themselves. - Nick Dthemselves. - Nick D
