Dear Residents of the Affton School District:

Welcome to the 2010-11 school year. We hope this directory contains information that you find useful as you learn about the district.

The Affton School District has long had a reputation, in Missouri, as an outstanding institution providing a great education to its students. The students of the Affton School District have continued to carry on a legacy of high aca-demic achievement. The district has been accredited by the state of Missouri with Distinction in Performance seven out of the last nine years, including the 2009-10 school year. This honor is due to the dedicated students and teaching staff we have in our district.

Many changes have taken place over the last few years in the Affton School District. We have seen major improve-ments to our buildings, grounds and facilities. We in the

district are very appreciative of the tremendous community support for our schools. We will continue to be fiscally responsible as we move into the new school year.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kenneth WeissflugInterim Superintendent

The Affton School District wishes to thank the South County Times and area businesses for making this directory

School history:The first high school classes in Affton were offered

in 1930, and were housed in the basement of the former McKenzie School, which now serves as the Administrative Offices of the district at 8701 Mackenzie Road.

The first section of the original Affton Senior High School building, which was later named W.F. Gaunt High School, was constructed in 1936 at 8520 Mackenzie Road, and the first class to graduate from the new high school was in 1937.

The current high school building was built in 1955. A classroom and cafeteria addition was added in 1958. Ninth grade students temporarily moved to

McKenzie School in the fall of 1958, back to the senior high in April 1959, and into a new ninth grade center at Gaunt School, after an addition was finished in 1961.

The terra cotta cougar and bronze school seal, both located in the high school lobby, were donated by the classes of 1961 and 1962, respectively.

An addition was completed in 1963, and in 1965 a bond issue was passed to provide the high school with an auditorium, pool, library and more class-rooms. The “pod” area of the high school was added in 1969.

Ninth grade students moved back to the high school after Gaunt was closed in 1978.

Prior to the start of the 2002-03 school year, new science labs were added to science classrooms. In addition, business computer labs, FACS classrooms, science classrooms, and administrative offices were upgraded. This work was made possible by the pass-ing of Proposition A in 2000.

A new student commons addition was built on to the existing cafeterias and opened for the 2003-04 school year. The commons addition was made possible by the generous donation made by Affton High School alums Bill (Class of 63’) and Nancy (Class of 65’) Thompson. Also, a new athletic complex with a new football field, bleachers, all-weather track, and lights was opened at the start of the 2003-04 school year.

School history:Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades

originally attended classes in the first frame school house in Affton, and moved into one of the four rooms in the McKenzie School building. Eighth grade students wishing to receive a diploma went to the county court house in Clayton to take four days of exams. The first eighth grade class to graduate from Affton took place in 1922.

In 1942, a junior high school was organized for grades seven and eight, and classes were held with the senior high school students at the original school (Gaunt School). When the new high school was completed, Gaunt was used for grades seven and eight only.

Land at 7550 Mackenzie Road was purchased in 1957 for a new junior high school, and in 1959 a bond issue was passed to build Mackenzie Junior High School.

Sixth grade students attended the elemen-tary schools until being moved to Heege School, built in 1931 at the corner of Mackenzie and Heege Roads, but after the building was closed in 1976 the students went to Mesnier Intermediate School, before joining MacKenzie Junior High School.

The school became known as Mackenzie Middle School in the fall of 1987, and was later renamed for Merrill J. Rogers, assistant principal

and principal of Mackenzie Junior High School from 1966 to 1986.

In 1995, an addition consisting of four class-rooms and a state-of-the-art library was built to the front of the building, the cafeteria was expanded, and an elevator was added. During the 2006-07 school year, the building was air condi-tioned, and five new classrooms were added. The modular classrooms, added to ease overcrowding were removed and an outdoor physical education area was built in that area. Improvements were also made to the athletic fields.

“DiStinction in PerforMance”The Affton School District has earned the state’s “Distinction in

Performance” award for their academic achievement and progress six of the last eight years including the 2008-09 school year.

The award is presented annually by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The Distinction in Performance award is based on the 14 aca-demic performance standards that are used in the accreditation of K-12 school districts. To qualify for the award, K-12 districts had to

meet 13 out of 14 performance standards, including all of the MAP-based measures.

The criteria were modified in 2006 to reflect changes in the state’s MAP testing program. A standard also was added to pro-vide a measure of “adequate yearly progress,” which is one of the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind act.

The Distinction in Performance award provides an annual con-firmation and recognition of a district’s consistent performance.

From its start in a one-room, native-stone schoolhouse, the Affton School District has grown into one of the most successful districts in the state, recognized for Distinction in Performance three consecutive years.

To mark its 150th anniversary of education and service, the district published a pictorial history which traces the district’s proud history from the mid 1800s to the present.

Only 1000 copies of these commemorative, collector books were printed. The 144-page book tells the story of Affton School District and the community which supports it through pictures. Many of the photos and memorabilia were donated to the district from pri-vate collections and have never been viewed by the public.

The price of the book is $31.95. Please include $5.00 for ship-ping and handling if not picked up locally.

Dr. Gaines and patient

Question:My nine-year-old plays sports year round. Wearing glasses is really inconvenient. They slip, get smudged and sometimes get knocked off. At what age can a child wear contact lenses or are there other options?

Answer: For kids, ages 8 and up. involved in competitive sports, dance or theater, soft daily disposable lenses are a great solution when glasses get in the way. There is no need to clean and disinfect the contact lenses since they are worn for one day and discarded. Because the contact lenses are always new, they are very comfortable. Not only are daily disposable contact lenses easy to use, they are regarded as the safest type of contact lens available. There is no cost for contact lens solutions, so they are very affordable. Daily disposable contact lenses are a good alternative to glasses, when needed. They can increase a child’sconfidence, leading to better performance on the field or on the stage. If your child is not ready for contact lenses, another popular option is prescription sports goggles. Summer is a great time to begin contact lens wear before practice begins and school resumes. We specialize in fitting children, tweens and teens for contact lenses. Call us today for a consultation.
