The Alliance Française de Melbourne is an Australian non-profit association dedicated to the promotion of the French language and culture. Founded in 1890, it is the oldest in Australia. An integral part of the Australian national network of 31 Alliance Françaises, Alliance Française de Melbourne also belongs to a worldwide network of 968 institutions in 136 countries.

The Alliance Française de Melbourne is the first language school for French in Victoria with more than 3,800 students enrolled last year. It offers a large variety of courses for adults, teenagers and children as well as different learning paces that suit all members of the public. Specialised courses, private tuition, workshops, outings to museums or restaurants, school visits, the Berthe Mouchette poetry competition or immersion camps: let yourself be tempted by the French experience!

Located in the heart of St Kilda in the superb Victorian-era Eildon Mansion dating back to 1850, the Alliance Française de Melbourne – which recently celebrated its 120-year anniversary – possesses unrivalled expertise and relies on a dynamic administrative team as well as thirty native French-speaking teachers.

It is also and importantly a vibrant cultural centre that offers a rich and varied program throughout the year, in partnership with institutions across Melbourne: exhibitions, talks, concerts, and of course, the highly anticipated Alliance Française French Film Festival in March each year.

Since 1894, thousands of young Victorians have brought French poetry to life. Each year, the Berthe Mouchette Competition, named in honour of the Alliance Française de Melbourne’s founder, offers a source of excitement for participants and their teachers. The Alliance Française de Melbourne runs the competition and awards prizes (hun-dreds of DVDs, books and encyclopedias) to the best stu-dents from Victorian primary and secondary schools (Years 3 to 12). There are more than 12,000 entrants each year. The Fédération des Alliances Françaises d’Australie awards the best Year 11 and Year 12 students who score the highest overall mark (Oral + Writing skills) with the La Pérouse Prize, a cultural trip to New Caledonia.

would you like to leArn French in FrAnce? we cAn help you!The Alliance Française network offers you a unique learning experience and offers: ► General French courses ► Tailor made and specialised workshops ► Cultural discoveries ► Accommodation arrangements

At Alliance Française de Melbourne, we can help you choose your French learning program in one of the Alliance Française in France: Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Marseille, Rouen, Montpellier, Strasbourg, Dijon, Toulouse, Grenoble or Nice.

testiMonyI was enrolled in the extensive classes, which is 9 hours per week over 3 days. I took the morning

classes so that I could spend the rest of the day visiting places in Paris. The classes are a huge mix of nationalities- Australia, Argentina, Chile, Spain, Brazil, Greece, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Italy, USA... and I made many friends! I had a wonderful time staying with a French family. I stayed with them at their house in the southern suburbs of Paris during the month of May. I was very nervous when I arrived in Paris and met them for the first time but they made me feel at home very quickly. They were very patient with me and also very eager to learn more about Australian culture. I have remained in touch with my family and have been invited back to their home on several occasions.Overall, I truly believe that choosing a homestay in conjunction with taking the classes was one of the best decisions I have ever made- it was fantastic and I highly recommend it. It was a wonderful experience and I learnt so much about the French culture and what it is like to live in France”

2011 highlights

The Jeudi Jazzy takes place on a Thursday evening each month in the Alliance Française’s decidedly funky basement. Come listen to jazz musi-cians who perpetuate St Kilda’s artistic and rhythmic tradition.

The French Film Festival, the big-gest foreign language film festival in Australia, is also the most established and prestigious. Our 2011 edition takes place from 9 to 27 March in five cinemas across Melbourne, where more than 47 recent French films and documentaries will be screened.

During the Fête de la francophonie from 28 March to 2 April 2011, we celebrate the vitality of the French lan-guage, spoken by a global community of 200 million people.

On 21 June each year, during the Fête de la Musique, music is given pride of place in festivities spanning France and a hundred other countries during the northern hemisphere summer sols-tice, which is the winter solstice down under. Everyone is invited to come play and share through music on this day.

France’s national celebration on 14 July, Bastille Day, is the perfect occa-sion to come together and dance.

On the third Friday of November, come savour the Beaujolais nouveau, the first new season wine, direct from France, during a relaxed evening of gastronomical delights.

In December each year at our French Christmas Market & Open Day, craftspeople based in Australia offer you quality French products that make for excellent gift ideas, just before the festive season arrives.
