3D exact geometry
with 3D PMI
representation
• UC: Data exchange with
Built to print manufacturers
• Information characteristics:
3D exact geometry as reference
for manufacturing and 3D metrology
3D PMI as semantic information for reuse by
downstream process (e.g. NC machining)
• U-C: Data exchange / 3D visualization
with Equipment manufacturers
• Information characteristics:
3D exact geometry and 3D external surfaces
definition for clash detection
3D PMI as “frozen information” only for
visualization by human
(no semantic / reuse by downstream process)
3D exact geometry
with 3D PMI
graphic presentation
3D tessellated geometry
with 3D PMI
graphic presentation
Examples of Use cases
• U-C: Data exchange for bids,
or for 3D installation instruction
• Information characteristics:
3D tessellated geometry, with IP protection
/ no possibility of manufacturing
3D PMI as “frozen information” only for
visualization by human
(no reuse by downstream process / applictaion)
Types of information Illustration

Use of STEP AP242 by the European A&D industries for 3D MBD interoperability
• UC: Data exchange with RSPs
or Data exchange for manufacturing of large
assemblies with changes along the time
• Main characteristics:
May require a TDM
Enable a formal procedure for delta change
(assembly and part levels)
• U-C: Data exchange / 3D visualization
with Equipment manufacturers, enabling
incremental / delta changes
• Main characteristics:
Possibility to identify the changes of the 3D
models
Avoid to resend unchanged 3D models
(no reuse by downstream process)
Use cases
• U-C: Data exchange for bids,
for small – medium size equipment suppliers
• Main characteristics:
Easy management (1 sending, 1 file)
Duplication of storage and conversion if limited
changes between 2 sendings
No formal procedure to identify the changes
between 2 sendings

Slide 19 ASD SSG – Nov. 2016
Use of STEP AP242 by the European A&D industries for 3D MBD interoperability
• European A&D companies have started to use in operation STEP AP242 for 3D DMU exchange and long term archiving,
• The digital twin will need to rely on a consistent set of ISO standards for: - requirements and V&V mngt., - definition, - simulation, - NC machining, etc covering the main A&D technological threads : metallic (sheet metal, machining, forging, etc), additive manufacturing, composite, electrical harness, tubing, etc.
• ASD SSG recommendation: STEP AP 242 is to become the cornerstone standard of the cross-process capabilities for interoperability of core 3D engineering design information under configuration management,
• Next priority for 2017: to set up the Implementer Forum for Requirement, Validation & Verification traceability, based on AP242 / AP239 : Start in 2017 with test rounds for Requirement Management (text based and properties based) in relationship with PDM and 3D MBD
• Coordination of European A&D standardization activities minimize the total cost of usage of interoperable solutions for 3D Model Based Def.
Synthesis: high value for the European A&D industries
to use STEP AP242, as part of a suite of STEP standards
for PLM interoperability
