But every day, too many people with intellectual and developmental disabilities lack access to technology that could improve their lives. That’s why The Arc has initiated a program designed to promote independence through the use of assistive technology (AT) at home, on the job and in centers. First, a definition. AT is any item, piece of equipment, software or product system used to improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. AT can be low-tech like communication boards made of cardboard or felt, or as high-tech as special purpose computers. It encompasses computer hardware like special switches, keyboards, pointing devices, screen- readers or communication software. Electronic devices and educational software, pencil holders and eye-gaze and/or head trackers are also considered to be AT. Here’s a practical example of how AT can be used. Danny Rosner owns a vending machine business and, due to his visual impairment, occasionally has difficulty seeing the rows inside the machines. That makes it challenging for him to determine which sodas need to be restocked. Danny met with Daphni Steffin, The Arc’s AT manager, who suggested a trial run of GoTalk buttons. The buttons repeat a recorded phrase when pressed. For Danny, one button on each row lets him know which type of soda needs to be refilled. The simple GoTalk buttons dramatically increase Danny’s level of independence at work. GoTalk buttons help Danny Rosner work more efficiently in his vending machine business.

One of the first things Daphni did when startingthe program was to visit the Maryland TechnologyAssistance Program. She returned armed with valuable information about the basic devicesneeded to establish an AT loan and demonstrationlibrary. Then she purchased a small assortment ofswitches, picture and large button phones, keyboards, mice and an iPad. Some are available forloan; others are available for demonstration only.

An individual interested in getting AT first has anopportunity for an assessment and consult. NextDaphni demonstrates a few devices to find theright fit. She or a team member teaches the individual to use the chosen device and, during thesubsequent four-week trial, provides tech supportand collects data on the effectiveness of the device. If the results are positive, Daphni works with the individual, their team, family and friends to ensurethe device is incorporated into every facet of theperson’s life.

During the past three months, 12 assessments and consults were provided, seven loans or demonstrations were completed and three peopleobtained devices. Additionally, many of the oldercomputers at The Arc’s six employment centershave been upgraded to newer models. Now thecomputers have accessible keyboards and micethat enable those with poor fine motor skills or visual impairments to use them. Daphni also plansto install webcams and microphones to enablepeople to communicate with their friends viaSkype.

Additional funding is being pursued to expand theloan library as well as to help nearly 72 adults andchildren participate in the program over the nextyear.

The Arc is collaborating with Loyola University Clinical Centers and University of Maryland Baltimore County. Loyola students studying speechpathology and AT will provide therapy and assessments. UMBC graduate students in AT willprovide individuals in our day and employmentprograms basic computer instruction, including theuse of social media and email.

Due to limited use of his hands and arms, Keith Hall talks to his familyand friends with a hands-free phone. Being able to connect with his girlfriend independently, in the privacy of his own room and without theassistance of his support staff, is very important to him. What was once adifficult task is now simple and private for Keith.

Thanks to new accessiblehardware, TraceyVoelker never misses acomputer class with herCCBC instructor KimberlyAlford Lewis. Because ofher visual impairment,Tracey had difficulty seeing the keys on a standard keyboard. Hernew keyboard and accessible mouse makenavigating the computermuch easier. She just received both to use ather home.

Daphni Steffin,The Arc’s AT manager

Towson University’s Institute for Well-Being has offered an exciting collaborative opportunity designed to help individuals who need a switch-adapted device. Students would create customdevices and provide training to help people whohave limited use of their hands operate devicesthat use bite or puff switches. A vast array of itemssuch as radios, games, toys, work equipment andmusic instruments could be adapted. Like TheArc’s efforts to improve lives through the use of technology, those possibilities are endless.

To help fund the purchase of other needed AT devices, donate online at www.thearcbaltimore.org/donate orsend your check to The Arc Baltimore and note AT inthe memo line.

disadvantaged neighborhoods. The six-personcrew cleans the restrooms and cafeteria, mopsclassrooms and stairwells, empties trashcans anddusts. Cristo Rey made sure the crew was fully integrated into the school, as evidenced by disability awareness training for the students and, recently, an Arc vs. Cristo Rey staff basketballgame. Staff appreciates the crew’s positive attitude and dedication;they say crew members model astrong work ethic and the abilityto overcome difficult situations tosucceed in life.

“Our colleagues from The Arc are important members of the Cristo ReyJesuit community, and we appreciate themany ways they have contributed to our school.”

Our assistant executivedirector of quality supports, Karyn Harvey, Ph.D., is the

author of two published books. Her most recent, “Trauma- Informed Behavioral Interventions:What Works and What Doesn’t,”provides a model for supportingpeople who have experiencedtrauma. Using case studies, Karynprovides examples of her approachand illustrates how plans should bewritten to ensure optimal implementation.

Karyn says she decided to write thebook after realizing that trauma was at the root of so many of the behavioral issues she saw in people with intellectual disabilities. “Teachinga graduate psychology class in trauma helped me recognize its effects. Iwanted to share my insights and propose a different treatment approachboth clinically and programmatically.”

In addition to giving professionals and paraprofessionals a template forproviding psychological support to people with intellectual disabilities,

the book highlights the critical elements needed forrecovery. As Karyn states inthe book’s introduction:‘’When the individual recovers, behaviorschange. When the individual recovers, happiness can begin.’’

Karyn’s first book was“Positive Identity Development: An Alternative Treatment Approach for Individualswith Mild and ModerateIntellectual Disabilities.”

Congratulations on yourlatest achievement,Karyn!

Longtime Arc Baltimore employee Andy Lawson recently celebratedhis retirement with family members, co-workers, roommates andArc staff at a farewell party at 7215 York Road. Andy received giftsand enjoyed hearing people share memories about his decades-

long history as a janitorial worker at Arc Baltimore headquarters. His familyspoke about how blessed he is to have friends and staff who truly care abouthim—and how much that puts their minds at ease.

Since retiring, keeping busy hasn’t been a problem for Andy. He participatesin a duckpin bowling league and is a regular swimmer at the CCBC DundalkAquatic Center. Andy also tends the backyard garden he planted. He listensfrequently to the bluegrass CDs his friends made for him and says he wouldlike to visit The Grand Old Opry in Tennessee.

Andy spends Tuesday afternoons at Talmar Gardens & Horticultural TherapyCenter in Cromwell Valley Park. Talmar is a nonprofit organization that provides the community with a therapeutic recreational environment forhorticultural activities. It’s a perfect fit for Andy, who is known for his love of gardening.
