Increasingly, the United Kingdom and in particular Cumbria, with its ageing population and high demand for technically skilled workers, is facing a significant skills shortage. At the same time there is an incredible opportunity for manufacturing businesses within Cumbria with the capabilities, to grow to meet today’s opportunities and challenges. But this huge potential can only be effectively realised through the development and maintenance of world-class technical and professional skills. Given our track record, Gen2 is ideally placed to help organisations identify and meet those requirements; ensuring they achieve their goals and stay one step ahead of their global competitors.

At Gen2, we pride ourselves in delivering focused, high quality training and career development solutions that allow our customers to fulfil their talent pipeline needs, through building and maintaining the skilled workforce essential in today’s highly competitive global marketplace.

Established as a not-for-profit venture in June 2000 by a partnership of, Sellafield Ltd (formally BNFL), Tata Steel (formally Corus), Iggesund Paperboard, Innovia Films, and Amec Foster Wheeler, Gen2 provides nationally respected skills solutions to industry. Today, these world-leading businesses continue to fully support and utilise Gen2’s ever-growing Cumbrian network of eight state-of-the art skills centres, which now provide premium quality training for over 300 businesses and thousands of learners every year.

These facilities deliver a unique, comprehensive range of professional training, from entry level Traineeships and Study Programmes, through Apprenticeships to Advanced Learning and ultimately, to professional degrees and postgraduate courses validated by our academic partners. Many of these programmes can also be undertaken on a part-time or block-release basis.

Mike Smith obe, Chief Executive Officer Gen2

At Gen2 everything is about helping our clients stay one step ahead. Building on Cumbria’s huge, decade-long £25.1 billion inward investment programme, Gen2 is playing an invaluable role in creating the opportunities that will make a positive difference to your business and employees.

2 Gen2 Skills for Tomorrow, Today Advanced Manufacturing 3

Despite being famed as one of UK’s most popular tourist areas, actually it is manufacturing that comprises the largest sector of the Cumbrian economy; totalling £2,358m, or 25% of Cumbria’s GVA and accounting for 35,000 jobs across the County. Manufacturing is particularly strong in a crescent that stretches from Carlisle in the north, through West Cumbria and the Furness Peninsula, all the way round to Kendal and the South Lakes. In Carlisle a cluster of advanced food sector manufacturing companies includes Northern Foods, McVities, Nestlé and Crown Bevcan. Carlisle also boasts Pirelli, world-renowned manufacturer of high performance tyres for top car makers that include Jaguar Land Rover and Porsche.

West Cumbria has long been home to world-class manufacturers, including Tata Steel Products, Iggesund Paperboard, ABB and Amcor, as well as Innovia, who are currently investing over £20m in a specialised banknote substrate plant for the Bank of England’s new £5 and £10 notes. In the Furness Peninsula and along the A590 corridor that feeds it established blue chip firms, such as BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness and GSK in Ulverston, are expanding with new facilities with a projected value of £1,820m.

All of this adds up, not only to a vote of confidence for Cumbria, but also for the quality and skills of its workforce; both now and in the future.

However, in today’s global marketplace, competition for investment into our region is greater than

ever; we don’t merely have to be concerned with providing an attractive ‘offer’ on a regional or even national level, we must also compete effectively on an international stage to build a positive future for our county. To secure this future inward investment and the employment that goes with it, Cumbria must ensure its offer matches the needs and expectations of business and industry. In particular we must address skills shortages and gaps in the workforce across a range of sectors, but particularly in engineering and advanced manufacturing. To do this we need to ensure we have the right programmes and high quality training and education facilities in place to support it. Gen2 stands ready and are committed to play our part in ensuring that you, our clients, remain one step ahead.

For outstanding training, choose an outstanding training provider.

James Walker is a major manufacturer of specialist hydraulic seals, gaskets, joints and pipework accessories with a long-established factory in Cockermouth. Its products and services provide static and dynamic fluid sealing solutions for a broad spectrum of engineering applications.

The Company’s ongoing drive to develop new and better fluid sealing products demands the support of a large, highly skilled workforce in what is a small market town on the edge of the Lake District.

James Walker use Gen2 to ensure they have access to the quality training needed to meet their skills requirement, with particular emphasis on higher apprenticeships. In fact they were one of the first clients to access our advanced learning when the courses were launched in 2010.

At James Walker, Gen2’s provision ranges from apprenticeships, through higher apprenticeships and on to degree level, and currently includes the development of a bespoke James Walker Slinging course.

As a close training partner, Gen2 have been intimately involved in delivering training at every level within the business, as well as assisting the Company with successful tendering for inward investment from funding bodies like the NSAN.

“Gen2’s extensive range of apprenticeship frameworks has enabled us as a business to tap into a wide skills pool of much-needed talent. The apprentices embark on their learning journey at James Walker with a thirst for skills and knowledge, and a ‘can do’ attitude in engineering roles that offer a challenging and rewarding career” Marie Mills, Graduate and Apprentice Development Manager, James Walker.

Tata Steel Projects (TSP) is a multi-disciplinary solutions business with extensive design and engineering manufacturing capabilities as well as a substantial portfolio of projects. They deliver innovative solutions across demanding market sectors including Rail, Defence and Security, Energy and Power, Construction, Nuclear and Industrial.

Their portfolio of award winning projects includes the redevelopment of King’s Cross Station and Reading Station Area, Thameslink Programme, Energy from Waste (EfW) facilities and the manufacture of watertight doors for Astute Class Submarine Boats and nuclear waste transport containers.

Tata Steel (formerly Corus) was one of the original founding partners of Gen2 and as such both organisations have worked closely over the past 15 years to help upskill and grow the future generation of Tata Steel Projects workforce.

John Coughlan, Director of TSP explains “Working in the nuclear and defence industries we require a highly specialised workforce. We always look for flexibility in our staff with the adaptable skills to be able to work across many industries. Our staff need a high level of precision manufacturing skills and often require training to keep their skill levels maintained and advanced. In recent years TSP has identified a number of skills gaps in our assembly team, which meant their skills were not always transferable from sector to sector. In response, Gen2 has supported TSP by delivering hydraulic, pneumatic and electro-pneumatic training. Training programmes have been developed to enhance mechanical assembly skills whilst developing the machining and CNC machining skills of mechanical fitters and welders, resulting in a more flexible and able workforce.

Manufacturing skills in the UK are in decline due to a combination of an aging workforce and general decline in the UK in the manufacturing sector as a whole. In order to prepare for the future we need to encourage, train and develop the next generation by working in partnership with organisations like Gen2 to develop advanced manufacturing skills. Gen2 has worked with TSP to design apprentice training programmes specifically for our needs in mechanical manufacture, design engineering and welding and fabrication.”

Gen2 has a long and established background in meeting the training needs of the Cumbrian fabrication industry and has recently been proud to become only the eighth centre in the UK to receive TWI approval for our welding schemes. This approval allows us to offer a range of TWI coded welding training schemes, along with welding inspection programmes (currently, CSWIP3.0 and 3.1) from our Lillyhall HQ facility at Workington. We can also offer the same high standard of coded welding training, tailored to the customers’ requirements from our premises in Carlisle and Furness, all of which are fully approved by relevant bodies such as Royal Sun Alliance. Whichever accreditation body is used, the high standards and bespoke nature of our training is the same. Our coded welding training will always begin with an individual assessment of the materials, technique and delegate skills level. From this assessment, the level of training required will be determined and an appropriate training and mentoring programme will be put in place to ensure that learning aims are fully achieved for the individual and employer.

Advanced Manufacturing 47

Global pharmaceuticals giant GSK has had a factory in Ulverston since 1948. The South Cumbria facility is currently receiving major investment to develop a state-of-the-art biopharmaceutical manufacturing plant. This will see huge expansion of the site in the next few years, for which Gen2 has been selected as a key training and skills development partner.

Gen2 delivers a comprehensive package of training to GSK Ulverston, ranging from Level 3 Process and Operations apprenticeships, through HNCs, up to BEng Hons in Mechanical Engineering. Course provisions are delivered both at Gen2’s Furness facility and on the client’s site.

In 2015, 30 young GSK apprentices undertook tailored training with Gen2. Reflecting the needs of the high pressure pharma sector, their training is being delivered in a concentrated six month period, instead of the more normal nine.

Experienced GSK personnel can access upskilling solutions from Gen2; undertaking QCF Level 5s, and commercial training in safety, as well as International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) and Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP) accredited elevated access courses. Whereas learners once needed to travel out of county, Glaxo SmithKline now utilises Gen2 for delivery of a range of fully accredited HNCs on their doorstep.

Gen2’s extensive expertise has also enabled the organisation to develop a Process Training course for the Ulverston site. Again, reflecting time constraints this training is more concentrated than similar packages developed by Gen2 for other companies. The close partnering of GSK and Gen2 provides an ideal vehicle for discussing new programmes and developing new training, as well as providing extensive support during the establishment of GSK’s new on-site training centre.

We have worked closely with ABB’s process automation division since Gen2 was launched in the year 2000. The Workington plant designs and builds leading-edge measurement and temperature systems for oil and gas. In the 16 years since ABB opened its West Cumbria facility, the products it produces have been developed significantly, helping double both output and revenue from the site in recent years.

ABB relies on Gen2’s training for the provision of basic semi-skilled disciplines and core skills, such as machining and welding. The organisation also provides training for advanced technicians and typical short courses, such as Health & Safety. In this trusted partnership, Gen2 works to deliver short tailored courses that upskill individual workers, bridging any potential skills gap within ABB and avoiding the need to outsource skills and services.

ABB’s John Edmondson commented “We’ve had long-term positive relations with the key members of staff at Gen2 and the organisation as a whole. Gen2 have been flexible in meeting the needs of ABB, and this I’m sure will continue into the future. Our highly successful Workington training model has now been replicated within other parts of the business; with Gloucestershire division now developing a local training arrangement inspired by our work with Gen2.”

He added “It’s been our experience that there’s really nothing more important than an apprentice, they are hugely valuable. The person is learning a skill and trade that’s with them for life. By using apprentices that are actually trained on ABB products, we have homegrown talent that understands ABB’s needs. We’re developing them into highly effective ABB employees and applying their skills to the business. There is an obvious economical advantage to hiring apprentices, but it also means we don’t have to waste time on outsourcing people who then turn out to have disciplines and skills that are not appropriate to our needs, or that are simply outdated.”

Gen2 has also trained three adult ABB employees up to Level 2 Machining and delivers the Company’s rolling Health & Safety training programmes, which have been specially tailored to meet ABB’s needs. It is this capability and flexibility in adapting courses that has proved invaluable to ABB. Whilst training is often delivered exclusively to ABB classes, some general courses are shared with other companies, helping amortise costs and develop networking opportunities locally.

Today the future is bright for ABB: Three years of significant investment in Workington is paying dividends with a number of major new products in the oil and gas sectors ‘in the pipeline’. Gen2 are an integral part of that success.

“Gen2 are the training ground for the recruitment of our present and future workforce, indeed 20% of our current team has come through Gen2 in some way. Many current ABB team leaders and supervisors have progressed with the Gen2 training scheme. In fact, without Gen2, we wouldn’t be able to fulfil the core skills we require at Workington. Whereas once our dealings with Gen2 were merely focused on apprenticeships, today we automatically go to them for all our training requirements.” Commented ABB’s John Edmondson.

A pipefitter is similar to a plumber in that both work with, install and manipulate pipes. The pipes a pipefitter works with must carry liquids or gases at high pressure for industrial purposes, while a plumber deals with pipes that carry water at low pressure.

Pipefitters fabricate pipework and supports using detailed engineering drawings, cutting, shaping and bending pipe in preparation for welding.

Pipefitters also fit sections of metal pipe together by cutting them precisely and may use techniques such as threading and bending.

Often working alongside welders, they connect piping efficiently and safely, sometimes in difficult conditions.
