DISK MANAGEMENT AND MAINTENANCE
Disk drives on your MAC View disk contents Format disks Defragment disks
Mac automatically does this but not 100% perfect Disk images & ISOs
Work with image files Raid (work with and create) Check disks [similar to windows check
disk/scan disk]
DISK CONTENT VIEWING Managing and working with image files
Such as ISO image files
DISK UTILITY Most disk related operations can be performed using the built in Disk

Finder->applications->utilities->disk utility Alternative:
When Finder window is active -> then click Go menu -> Utilities-> disk utility Shortcut: Shift + command + U Or ctrl + space, then type disk utility
Disk Utility Can show all hard drives and volumes
Volumes inside hard drives Can erase, partition, restore, raid functionality (multiple drives) Run Check disk [mark bad blocks/sectors in the drive] Restore image to this drive and volume Options: First Aid, Erase, Partition, RAID, Restore First aid: check disk equivalent
DISK UTILITY: DISK DEFRAGMENT Mac Automatically defrags
Not always, not by 100% No built-in apple tool to defrag [that you can
execute] iDefrag – commercial defragment tool When you have multiple drives, you can
create RAID Can be useful for servers Mirrored, striped, concatenate Set block size, repair RAID

USER ACCOUNTS AND SECURITY User Accounts Anti-malware Filevault Firewall Misc Security Safari Security
USER ACCOUNTS System Preferences -> Users Accounts Mac is not much safer than windows
[fundamentally] Though will get affected less as there are less viruses
and hackers targeting Mac platform Will get more and more virus and malware over time Virus creators want to get more exposure; so
windows has more of them If you do not have protection, you will get some in
your mac All big Anti-virus companies have Mac versions
APPLE EXTRA SERVICES AND USER ACCOUNTS – CONFIGURE AND CREATE When you signup for Apple Extra Services
Will provide you an antivirus software as well dotMac Service: Antivirus Program
System Preferences System -> Accounts [know about mobile me service by Apple]
Configure Login Accounts Login items
Set applications to run automatically Mobile me service affects some features Click the lock to make changes in the accounts
Enable and use this Then you can add new account Set account type
Administrator, Group, sharing Tabs in the window: Password and Login Items Add to login items
Click the + button
USER ACCOUNTS – CONFIGURE AND CREATE
You can also set auto logins with an account Login time: only pass or user/pass
combinations What to show on the login window can be
configured somewhere from here Voice over feature at login Enable fast user switching: switch user but
keeps stuff running One user can access the programs as run by other
users
SYSTEM PREFERENCES->PERSONAL System preferences- > Personal -> security
Tabs in the window: General, FileVault, Firewall General
Disable auto login Password requirement Log out after X minutes Use secure virtual memory Disable remote control infrared receiver
Pair to remote Disable infrared remote control
Set account type Administrator, Group, sharing
FILEVAULT FileVault
Encrypt files in your home folder Set master password Turn on FileVault Filevault is for local, not for remote Encrypt using login password For extra security:
Master password Turn filevault on Per account basis Will take a while
Most Mac has infrared receiver Options for the infrared [remote]configuration
FIRWALL TAB Default firewall Default allow incoming for basic services Allow all incoming connections Allow only essential services Set access for specific services and
applications Logging option to figure out what are failing Stealth mode
Deny connection but do not tell anyone More secure but not much logging
SAFARI SECURITY Safari menu ->Block pop-up windows Emptying the cache, good security work Private browsing
No history No id/password saving option
Safari -> preferences Auto fill can be a security option
Give access to address book card User names and passwords Other forms What to auto fill Disabling can be more secure
SAFARI SECURITY: ADVANCED Develop Menu
Security sensitive activity Change the user agent Make the browser behave something
differently
SECURITY TAB FOR SAFARI Warn when visiting fraudulent site Enable plug ins Enable java Block pop-up windows Cookies Local Database
