Don’t forget Graduation Night is Thursday 20th September at 7pm. A photographer will be available forfamily shots if you are interested.

Healthy Schools, Healthy Future

Jodie Lewis has been appointed as our new worker for this program. We held a family meeting recently

whish was poorly attended. This presentation will take place at the next P&C meeting 12th September at7pm.

The HSHF project is a 3 year initiative of the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England PopulationHealth that is being conducted in 32 schools (DET and CSO) across the Hunter New England regiontargeting Years 7 - 10 students. The aims of the intervention project are to increase adolescent resilienceand mental health and wellbeing, and to decrease participation in/uptake of the harm behaviours of alcohol, tobacco and marijuana use, and unsafe sexual practises. There is also focus on strengthening connectionsbetween the school, home and community, increasing awareness of and access to support services, anddevelopment of the skills to build and maintain positive and supportive relationships.

The purpose of conducting the Community Workshops is two-fold. Firstly, it is a way to inform the schoolcommunity (i.e. parents/families, students, staff) and community organisations within the local area about theHSHF project and our aims/targets over the intervention period. And secondly, to provide a forum forparticipants to collaborate and have input as to how they feel student resilience needs can best besupported, how community organisations can be better promoted and accessed, and how communityorganisations and parents can have greater engagement and involvement within the school (i.e. in events,decision-making, implementation of resilience-based programs/educational opportunities).

These Workshops also provide community organisations with an opportunity to advocate the programs andservices they can provide/offer students and families within and external to the school, and also a chance tonetwork with other organisations. We encourage organisations to promote their services, and have resourcematerial (i.e. posters and brochures) displayed and available for schools and parents to access both at theWorkshop and within the school after the event.

Year 7 Welfare Day

On August 27 Year 7 had the pleasure of having Brett Murray at Cardiff High School to present issuesrelated to bullying in a positive manner to the students. He spoke about an air balloon and demonstrated to the students how the character ofthe individual can take off with you as the pilot to follow your dream through determination and passion.

Thank you very much Brett for organising such an enthralling, entertaining seminar. The presentation showedways to deal and cope with bullying. Brett displayed to the students that the past, media and truth shape theindividual but ultimately you make the CHOICE as to how you lead your life.

Brett has been seen on many television programs promoting making Bullying History. He has even had hisown program where he turned around the lives for many youth who had troubled lives.

Students completed the day with the activity to plan their dream; to think about where their life is headingand to reaffirm with positive affirmation.

Thanks go to RUSH for sponsoring Brett to come to Cardiff High, as well as offering to the students theopportunity to have mentors.

2012 EV PRIZE Competition

Our school was invited to enter the 2012 EV Prize competition in the schools division. We were late to startcompared to the other teams and had some delays on delivery of parts. Never the less we managed tomake the race day and were very pleased with our results coming first out of all of the public school entrantsand first of the first time competitors. Plus we were only two laps off the winning team after one and a halfhours of racing.

On Sunday the 26th Ashley Link and Hayden Wilson went to Newcastle Kart Racing Club raceway at 5Cameron Park Drive, Cameron Park accompanied by Mr James to race Cardiff High’s “state of the art”electric bike. It was a great day with good weather, a fantastic venue and a great atmosphere. A deliciouslunch was provided by Rotary and it was nice to receive a hat, shirt, drink bottle, pen, writing book and othergoodies just for participating. There was a great range of electric vehicles varying in designs, shapes and

sizes to look at.

We had to overcome many adversities to achieve our fantastic result. Our project had problems that had tobe solved. We had mismatched parts and a motor that didn’t arrive until the Friday before the race. Howeverthis did not stop us but only provided us with opportunities to use our problem solving skills and develop ourpractical skills. After we had overcome those challenges we had two separate punctures in our rear tyre tocontend with. One while undergoing scrutineering and another in time trials for the grid starting positions.Luckily we were able to repair the puncture during the recharge window before the actual race.

Once the tyres were fixed, we went in the race with Ashley Link who rode for 30 minutes, then HaydenWilson who rode for 60 minutes. At the end of the race both riders quote “The seat would be veryuncomfortable after 90 mins” which I bet it would’ve been. Both riders did a magnificent job to follow therace plan and rode the bike in an economic fashion. But Ashley and Hayden were not the only ones in theproject and Jarrod Goninan, Jason Horn, Harvey Durrance, Isaac Naylor, Gavin Caleb and Joshua Crouch-Reeves deserve recognition for their contributions.

We would like to thank the support that we received from many people along the way. One of these was JonEggenhuizen who gave up his time to come in to assist us sharing his knowledge and skills about buildingelectric motor vehicles. Another was Helen Link who put us in contact with The University of Newcastleengineering. The two students from the university that came and brain stormed ideas with us and returned toassist with problem solving and the build. Plus the support of the Industrial Arts teachers who gave usaccess to the Industrial Arts rooms and resources. We received sponsorship from Lake Macquarie CityCouncil and the University of Newcastle and the bike parts were donated from Bike Ecology. Catavolt wasour source of electric motor, controller and lights.

Term 4 will see the introduction to some new sports and venues to Cardiff High School Wednesday Sport.Below is a brief outline of each of the new sports. The full list of sports being offered will follow.

Crossfit @ Strength Republic

Crossfit is one of the most popular methods of improving fitness at present. It is one of the fastest growingsports and will give students the opportunity to develop their strength and conditioning in a fun and safeway.

CrossFit is great for developing a broad base of fitness; it builds strength and increases endurance. Ratherthan working muscles in isolation, CrossFit exercises involve the entire body, a method that gets balancedresults much quicker than traditional programs. It is the perfect application for any committed individualregardless of experience and conditioning who is looking to become leaner, stronger, faster, more fit andconfident. CrossFit uses Olympic lifting progressions, basic gymnastic skills and high intensity cardiocombined with many other movements, beneficial in day-to-day life.

Whether you want to lose weight, increase your functional strength and fitness, training as an elite athlete, inthe armed forces, a housewife or a grandparent, CrossFit is for you and will benefit anyone ready to acceptthe challenge.

Martial Arts @ Strength Republic

The martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practices. They are practiced for a variety ofreasons, including self defence, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental, physical, andspiritual development.

During sport, students will get the opportunity to learn a mixture of martial arts to help them with fitness andself defence. They will be instructed by qualified martial art instructors.

Judo–School Hall

Judo is the 2nd most practiced sport in the world (2nd only to soccer).

Judo is the only sport based martial art where you practice full contact grappling skills in standing and onthe ground every time you train. These are the skills you need most in order to defend yourself masterathletic techniques, build strength and fitness.

Judo is also ideal for children as it promotes physical, mental and character development, combining safeand fun gymnastic skills with a form of self defense that is much less likely to injure someone than martialarts involving striking (kicking, punching etc.)

At the moment Cardiff High School have Samurai Judo Academy operating out of our school hall on aTuesday & Friday afternoon /evening. The instructors at Samurai Judo Academy have made themselvesavailable to run a Judo class during the Wednesday afternoon sport. Students electing to do Judo for sportwill be taught by professional tutors (senseis).

PD/Health/PE Report

With the end of the term approaching, it is timely to look back on the year- especially with our Year 12 classcompleting their HSC studies. This year has seen the following activities occur in PDHPE to date:

Fitness assessmentsDecathlons and pentathlonDancing – bush dance, square dance, social dance (The Pride of Erin!) and Latin American danceAssignments – Who am I? Body Image, Anti-Bullying, Youth Health Services, Sandwiches! Artefactstasks and more….OrienteeringArcheryUltimate FrisbeeOz Tag / touch football and flag footballDecision ballDrug educationLearning about pubertyThe Ski Trip!

All these (and more) activities have taken place in PDHPE and PASS classes this year – when you considerall the things we do, PDHPE is much more than just playing games. It is through the efforts of the PDHPEstaff and the input of students that makes a difference – we hope that the students continue to applythemselves to their work and that we are able to maintain the range of activities.

Cardiff HS Moodle website

As you are aware, Cardiff HS has a website using the “Moodle” format. It is on this website that many classactivities and assignments are placed. In Term three, the PDHPE faculty has placed several of these ontoour Moodle section - to access this, go to the following web address:

http://web1.cardiff-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/moodle/course/category.php?id=20

From here, students AND parents can access the relevant year group and material that has been placed onthe website. I encourage parents and students to check the Moodle site regularly to keep up to date withwhat is happening in their subjects.

Farewell Year 12

The end of this term sees our Year 12 PDHPE students complete the HSC course, with the HSC Exam for

PDHPE set for the morning of the 31st of October. We wish them well and know that they will spend theirtime between the end of term and the HSC commencing busily studying and revising for the exams. Iextend an invitation to our students, should they wish to, to use the library at the school for study and feelfree to keep in touch with the PDHPE staff if they have concerns about the exam or would just like to touchbase – the door is always open.

Regards,

The PDHPE Faculty
