19 tons of bricks delivered to a wrong address“An entrepreneur has ordered 19 tons of bricks for a construction work. The bricks were delivered at the wrong address, situated in a dwelling area, while the family living there were at work. The family, the transport company and the contractor had several fierce discussions before the situation was clarified.”

From telephone-based survey of problems related to duplication of road names in post codes, 2006

The solution

14Global Addressing Conference UPU, Berne, 26.-27. October 2015

Change conflicting road names or

change post code boundaries

Page 15: Address Infrastructure: For the benefit of all – Danish experiences

The business case

15Global Addressing Conference UPU, Berne, 26.-27. October 2015

= Result: Problem should be solved

One time cost of solution (public sector): 1.5-2.5 mill. US$÷

Value (benefit) of not having the problem(public sector) per year: 3.5 mill. US$ /year+

Please note:Even though the problem

affects “only” 0,7 % of the addresses …

… the benefit of the solution will be

1.50 US$ per address*) every year!

*) Total number of addresses in Denmark is 2.4 mill

The address infrastructure

This gives a picture of the total value of the address infrastructure

But value of a repair equals to 1.5 US$ for each and every

address in Denmark

We found a problemaffecting only 0.7 % of addresses

The solution

Value (benefit) of solutionin five years 2005-2009: 88 mill. US$+

Please note: In 2010 benefits was estimated

was only 0,3 mill US$!

Releasing addresses as “open data” gives extraordinary good socio-economic benefits. Reason is, that so many

users have interest in address data

Page 27: Address Infrastructure: For the benefit of all – Danish experiences

CaseImproved address coverage plus

fast and open data services(2013-2017)

27Global Addressing Conference

Page 28: Address Infrastructure: For the benefit of all – Danish experiences

The problem (2012):

28Global Addressing Conference UPU, Berne, 26.-27. October 2015

Due to insufficient address coverage, quality and data services, significant gains are still outstanding There are areas in Denmark, e.g. large business or

industrial properties, with only one address

Page 29: Address Infrastructure: For the benefit of all – Danish experiences

Let’s ask the users

29Global Addressing Conference UPU, Berne, 26.-27. October 2015

Waste of time correcting errors and defects in address information …

Unnecessary costs to implement address data in it-systems …

Extra data management costs to compensate for deficiencies in official address data …

Huge potential for process improvement in e.g. logistics, transportation, planning …

Page 30: Address Infrastructure: For the benefit of all – Danish experiences

The solution

30Global Addressing Conference UPU, Berne, 26.-27. October 2015

Improve address coverage, data quality and timeliness.

Improve data infrastructure and -services

First results are here now!

35Global Addressing Conference UPU, Berne, 26.-27. October 2015

Using our open services, it’s easy to type in a address on a webpage or application – and the address is valid! Our services are accessed >5 mill times/week

Since 2014 more than 500 it-applications have saved money using our address-as-a-service instead of building address-functionality from scratch

Our improved address quality and timeliness reduces the need of purchasing additional 3rd party data … and further down the road is still a

huge potential benefit in improvement of processes in e-government logistics, transport etc.
