PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It is my pleasure to welcome all members to the fortieth Annual General meeting and withmuch pride I present to you for consideration and adoption the fortieth Annual Report ofthe Foundation incorporating the financial statements as at 30 June 2011.

This last year saw Australia participate in only one Davis Cup Tie and that was a WorldGroup Play-off Tie against Belgium in Cairns on the weekend of 17-19 September, 2010.Unfortunately the team of Lleyton Hewitt, Peter Luczak, Carsten Ball, Bernard Tomic andPaul Hanley was not successful against the versatile Belgians with Olivier Rochus winningboth his singles and Steve Darcis clinching the vital fifth rubber in straight sets.

This confined Australia, once again to the Asia Oceania Group 1 for 2011, and the drawgave Australia a bye in the first round. In November, 2010 John Fitzgerald retired asCaptain after nine years with, no doubt, the highlight being a Davis Cup triumph in 2003when Australia defeated Spain in Melbourne.

Shortly afterwards Patrick Rafter was appointed as Captain and he has started on a successful note by leading Australia back to the World Group Play off with a win overChina in July, 2011.

Although it occurred after the close of the financial year under review, I should nevertheless congratulate Sam Stosur on her great victory in winning the US Open in themost trying of conditions. Her play was matched by her manner; absolutely magnificentand I am sure there is more success to come as the years roll by.

As reported in our recent newsletter the Board of the Foundation has undergone some significant changes with two long serving Directors retiring in recent months. Tennis administrator extra-ordinaire, Brian Tobin having served at the State level, then theNational level, becoming president of the LTAA in the 80’s, and then becoming presidentof the world body, the ITF for nine years before moving back to Melbourne and serving 10years with the ADCTF. Des O’Brien our esteemed treasurer for 17 years also bowed outat a recent board meeting. Des is one of those officials who quietly goes about his business, working tirelessly behind the scenes but playing a very important part in theFoundation’s success. A Victorian who has been active in the local and state tennis scene,Des you have served the foundation diligently, now enjoy your retirement.

With retirements, replacements must come about! It is with great pleasure that I confirmthat two long-standing tennis officials have accepted appointments as directors.

Robert Hinton, Partner in a legal firm in Melbourne has been in tennis administration forover 20 years and was President of Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club for a number ofyears. His expertise both on and off the court will be a welcomed addition to the Board.

Robert Jamieson, a former President of Australian Chess Federation has also had awealth of experience in tennis administration and has taken up the position of Treasurer.Robert has quickly adjusted to the role and I am confident the Foundation will benefit fromhis experience.

The administration of the Foundation has been upgraded with the appointment of RobertParker as a part time Marketing Administrator. Robert will work closely with JudyPullyblank, who continues to well serve the Foundation with her pleasant and

Page 6: ADCTF Annual Report 2011

courteous manner. With the support that Judy also receives from her husband Alan, Ibelieve our support staff has strengthened the secretariat to be the best ever.

In thanking Judy for her wonderful and diligent work, I welcome Robert most heartily. Hisyears of serving Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club as General Manager will no doubt bea significant help in his duties with the Foundation.

Two other men have contributed to the Foundation over the years, I refer to Rod May whohandles the ticketing for our members and Ray Briggs who edits our Newsletters. I thankboth gentlemen for a job well done.

Of course, the Foundation could not function without an Honorary Secretary and inGraeme Cumbrae-Stewart, we have one of the best. His knowledge, experience andattention to detail is invaluable, not only to the Board but also to the broader Membership. On behalf of all members I thank Graeme most sincerely for his dedication to his post.

In closing may I also extend my thanks to all other Directors for their support. Each andevery one has contributed to the interests of the Foundation.

We are indebted to Tennis Australiafor its tangible recognition of the support provided by the Foundation and its membersthroughout Queensland.

NEW MEMBERS

To those members who have joined the Foundation since this time last year, we say ‘thank-you’ and we take this opportunity to explain to you that the lion’s share of our annualincome is represented by membership subscription income. This money, in turn, is included in the funds that we pass directly to Tennis Australia each year to offset the hugecost of conducting selected portions of its ambitious Junior Player Development programs.

Our Directors are pleased to welcome the following people who have applied for and beengranted membership since the date of our last Annual Report:

RETIREMENT OF DIRECTORSDes O’BrienDuring the year our long serving Treasurer, Des O’Brien retired. He will be sorely missed. The quality of his work, the enthusiasm he brought to the Board Room, his dedication tohis responsibilities and love of the Foundation, made Des O’Brien a great Office-bearer.

He is the ideal sports loving Australian who is willing to contribute on and off the sportsfield. His love of tennis combined with his interests in Athletics made Des an active sportsman. In his younger days he competed at Stawell’s Easter Athletic Carnival for anumber of years and he tasted success in the 60’s by winning the prestigious Mile event.

Administrative positions were offered and terms as President of his local Church tennisclub, SJCTC Heidelberg (over 20 years spread over two terms and still going), and Auditorof the Victorian Tennis Association 1980-2002 led to his appointment as Treasurer of ourFoundation, a position he held for 17 years.

A great friend to many members and very popular with all which made Des one of themost respected Administrators to serve the Foundation.

Brian TobinAs a player, Brian was ranked among our top 10 in Australia from 1956-62 but his mostlasting contribution to tennis occurred off the court where he helped take the game intouncharted waters. A visionary leader of the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia from1983-89, he played a pivotal role in the development of a state-of-the-art tennis centre, revitalizing the Australian Open and restoring it to world prominence. FORMAT FOR DAVIS CUPWith 110 years of tradition behind it, the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas is the premier team competition in tennis. The symbol of this prestigious competition is the beautiful silver DavisCup trophy, donated by Harvard student Dwight Filley Davis in 1900. It now consists offour pieces; the silver Trophy and three wooden bases (total weight over 200kg).

In the early years, only two nations competed for temporary ownership of the Davis Cuptrophy, the United States and the British Isles. Before the first World War, France, BelgiumAustria, Australasia, Germany and Canada had joined the USA and Britain in competingfor the Davis Cup.

The Davis Cup is a recognised institution in tennis. It will be as influential in the 21st century game as it was instrumental in the growth of tennis from 1900 until the presentday. The simplicity of its Nation vs. Nation format has provided a framework for one of themost successful competitions in sporting history.

From its inception, Davis Cup has attracted all of the top Australian players. Rafter, Hewitt,Philippoussis, the Woodies, Stoltenberg and Arthurs are all modern day members of a century old club whose legends include Sir Norman Brookes, Gerald Patterson, JackCrawford, Frank Sedgman, Lew Hoad, Ashley Cooper, Neale Fraser, Rod Laver, RoyEmerson, John Newcombe, Pat Cash and now Lleyton Hewitt, all winners of the greatestGrand Slam Event of them all – Wimbledon.

Each tie consists of five matches, four singles and one doubles, played over three days. On theopening day, the number two singles player for each nation plays the number one player for theopposing nation. On day two, the crucial doubles match is played. On the final day, the numberone players face each other in the opening match while the number two players meet in the fifthmatch. All are played over best-of-five-sets with no tie break in the fifth set.

The pinnacle of the Davis Cup competition is the World Group. Sixteen nations are drawnagainst each other in a knock-out format leading up to the Davis Cup by BNP ParibasFinal. Nations that have gone on to win the Davis Cup title include the United States,Australia, Great Britain, France, Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, South Africa,Russia, Spain and Croatia. Each year’s World Group competition is made up of fourrounds, scheduled throughout the year, culminating in the Davis Cup Final played in lateNovember/early December.

Below the World Group, there are three regional zones, the Euro/African, American andAsia/Oceania Zones, in which Group I, II, III, and IV ties are played. The goal is to moveup group by group until the World Group and possibly the title is achieved.

The eight winners of Zonal Group I competition are drawn with the eight World Group first roundlosers in September’s World Group Qualifying Round. Stakes are high as the winners will go onto compete in the World Group in the subsequent year. In the 2010 Davis Cup competition, 125nations participated from Zonal Group IV through to the elite World Group.

Prize money was introduced to the Davis Cup competition for the first time in 1981, when the NEC Corporation joined the competition as its Title Sponsor. In 2002, BNP Paribas took over the Title Sponsorship. BNP Paribas is joined by six international Ancillary Sponsors –Hewlett Packard, Hugo Boss, NH Hoteles, Rolex, Turismo Madrid and Wilson – in supportingthe Davis Cup competition on a worldwide basis.
