ACTIVITIES & DEVELOPMENTS IN ACCELERATORS

* The development of superconducting magnets for the LHC has been the main activity of the group for many years. We have designed, built and tested many prototypes, not only in the group, but also in collaboration with industry. Among all of them, the two quads in the figures can be considered the most relevant magnets.

* We have also developed several kind of multipoles and we even started a research activity to optimise the mechanical design of the coils for these multipoles. Some of these magnets were finally manufactured and delivery by industry.

ACTIVITIES & DEVELOPMENTS IN ACCELERATORSPARTICLES: The SuperLHC

* CIEMAT has been working for several years in the “Next European Dipole” project: In a first phase, in the characterisation of the highcurrent density Nb3Sn Cables as well as in the design of new geometries for magnets, such as the “Common Coil Concept”.In a second phase, CIEMAT has started to work in the development of the future insertions for the SuperLHC with the commitment of fabricating a NbTi Superferric Sextupole.

ACTIVITIES & DEVELOPMENTS IN ACCELERATORS

* From 1999 to 2003, CIEMAT participated in the TESLA500 project with a superconducting magnet based on the use of ribbons glued from Sc wires. We also developed a current lead based on BiSCCO fibers. Although the project was stopped, it was the seed for our future contributions to XFEL & ILC.

ACTIVITIES & DEVELOPMENTS IN ACCELERATORS

* In the year 2006 we sent to SLAC the magnet from the TESLA500 project (one of the candidates for the ILC) for the characterisation of its magnetic stability.

* In 2007, CIEMAT sends an EoI to develop a Sc magnet prototype for the ILC, funded by CIEMAT and the Ministry of Science & Technology.

PARTICLES:ILC (2)Magnetic Center displacement measurements according to the Beam Based Alignment (BBA) procedure for 100, 50 and 5A

SLAC has just finished the measurements for our TESLA500 magnet. On the one hand they have evaluated the multipolecontent due to persistent currents, and on the other the displacement of the magnetic centre for various currents, since according to specifications they should be limited to ±2.5μm. Results have been satisfactory and only for low currents specifications are not completely fulfilled.

ACTIVITIES & DEVELOPMENTS IN ACCELERATORS

* In 2004, CIEMAT joined the CTF3 experiment to test the feasibility of CLIC(CERN). Our contribution consists of the delivery of different components for the Combiner Ring and also for the Transfer Lines and the Test Beam Line. In this participation, with an overall budget of around 1,5M€, we had an important industrial contribution.

ACTIVITIES & DEVELOPMENTS IN ACCELERATORSLASER LIGHT SOURCES:XFEL (1)

• CIEMAT is collaborating since 2004 in the international project XFEL (X-Ray Free Electron Laser) to be installed in DESY (Hamburg).

• It is a Laser Light Pulsed Source of 100ns duration pulses in the band from 0.085 to 6 nm.

• It consists of a Superconducting LINAC ( cavities and magnets) up to 20 GeV plus an array of undulatorsbased on permanent magnets.

Our contribution is valued in about 12 M€ and our commitment consist of the delivery of the following systems:

•120 Superconducting Magnets plus their Power Supplies.

• 91 Intersections between undulators made from different elements

Page 16: Activities & Developments in the Particle Accelerators ... Garcia-Tabares - Activities and... · Luis García-Tabarés Head of the Accelerator Unit at CIEMAT (luis.garcia@ciemat.es)

* Within the first contribution, our group has developed a short series of four superconducting combined magnets (one quadrupole + two dipoles) while the remaining 100 magnets will be developed by industry. Our two first prototypes have been tested successfully and the first of them placed in a test string.

* Within the second contribution, CIEMAT must deliver some main components of the intersections between undulators, as well as its full assembly (optional). These components are:

* The Phase Shifter Magnet (including a magnetic measuring table to measure its field quality)

ACTIVITIES & DEVELOPMENTS IN ACCELERATORS

* CIEMAT will lead the Spanish Contribution to FAIR (Facility for Antiproton Ion Research) coordinating the delivery (in cooperation with Saclay) of the superconducting multiplets for the Super Fragment Separator (SFRS).

This contribution is valued in 20 M€ and will be funded by the Ministry of Science & Innovation.

ACTIVITIES & DEVELOPMENTS IN ACCELERATORSFUSION: IFMIF

The Accelerators Unit also collaborates in the IFMIF project: a 40 MeV, 125 mAdeuteron accelerator acting on a lithium target to generate neutrons to test materials for the first commertial fusion reactor : the DEMO

IFMIF-EVEDA AcceleratorIon source LEBT RFQ MS HWR DP+HEBT BD

To validate the IFMIF concept, the so called EVEDA phase has been launched with a current of 125 mA and an energy of 9 MeV, for which our unit is contributing with two components:

• The delivery of the so called “Matching Section” (MS)

• The superconducting magnets for the DTL (HWR)

FACILITIES: SUPERCONDUCTIVITY LABORATORY

* Our unit runs two specialized laboratories. One is the Superconductivity lab, which is located at CEDEX and it is the place where superconducting magnets and devices are tested. It includes power supplies up to 2000 A, two cryostats for Low Tc magnets and one for HTc ones, using a cryocooler. We also have the necessary instrumentation to carry out the tests. The lab is completed with a winding facility to manufacture magnets, which is located at CIEMAT.

FACILITIES : ENERGY LABORATORY

* The second Lab is devoted to Energy. It has a pit to test flywheels at nominal speed, power and energy. The installed power is 500 kVA and it also has a 16 T crane plus a control room. In this lab we assemble and test power converter and supplies.
