Joint Board-Council Committee on Publications Open Meeting August 8, 2014 San Francisco, CA

Purpose  of  Today’s  Session

• Provide  summary  highlights  of  the  Publications  Division’s  YTD  performance across operational areas

• Feature some recent Editor-in-Chief appointments – New Journals in 2015 – New Editor-in-Chief for Organometallics

• Update the Committee on open access developments, including progress  of  our  “ACS  is  Open”  strategic  offerings

• Offer some thoughts on the outlook for the remainder of 2014

ACS Publications Demonstrating Strong Performance Through Q2

• Journals Publishing Group strong – Editorial peer review capacity expanded; increases in editor

appointments offset by cost containment through shared administrative support and other efficiencies in ACS editorial operations

– YTD growth in submissions and published article output in line with assumptions; production staff have maintained fast turnaround

– Web Usage shows robust year-on-year growth in article downloads � Many top institutional users now based in Asia

– ACS ChemWorx user base now > 50,000; new 2.0 release imminent – Editorial searches for new journals to be launched in 2015 completed;

other searches in progress and on track � ACS Biomaterials Science and Engineering � ACS Infectious Diseases � ACS Central Science (pending confirmation)

assignments, and redesign efforts underway – Advertising sales resourcing plan a priority

• Marketing and Sales driving brand awareness, promoting our reputation for editorial excellence and technology innovations – Latest Thomson Reuters ISI Journal Citation Reports demonstrate

continued preeminence of ACS journals portfolio � Sustained excellence in Impact Factors; Growth in Citations; Strong

performance for new journals – Operational efficiencies in Sales Analysis and Support, and

enhancements in interfaces with Customer Billing and Account Services has streamlined renewals process

– ACS ChemWorx marketing efforts driving steady user enlistment; expanded author services now a unifying concept for feature set

– ACS on Campus continues to elevate the ACS Publications brand and the  Society’s  reputation (more than 20 events planned in 2014)

– ACS Publications Graduate Student & Postdoc Summer Institute held July 28-August 1

– ACS  Editors’  Choice  now well established – Increased uptake of expanded ACS AuthorChoice options evident – ACS Central Science awareness campaigns continue

� Editor-in-Chief search committee outcome forthcoming soon – ACS Author Rewards being promoted; eCommerce in place – Public access policy coordination across US funding agencies still to

be confirmed—some plans now revealed � 12 month embargo period assumed; publisher advocacy continues on

need for evidence-based embargo period(s) and CHORUS as solution � Benefits of leveraging cross-publisher CHORUS linking initiative has been

acknowledged by DOE as an adjunct to  agency’s  PAGES  repository   – Growth in OA mandates abroad is increasingly apparent

� UK, Netherlands, Austria tilting to Gold OA � Countries elsewhere in EU trending toward Green OA and fixed embargo

periods (12 months or less) � New: China announced support for OA in late May; India funders have

recently endorsed open deposit (Green) 12

2014 Outlook • ACS is prepared to accommodate Open Access policy mandates

– UK, Europe, and US remain epicenter(s) of activity – Mixed economy emerging (subscriptions/ author-paid /free access) – ACS AuthorChoice open  access  option    corrects  any  “double  dipping” – Text/data mining provisions stirring debate, particularly in UK/EU – Legislation pending in Congress, language in appropriations bills, and

policy memoranda from OSTP are strengthening the resolve of funding agencies in setting public access policies

– New entrants and shifts to OA mean heightened competition for ACS (e.g. Cell Press Chemistry; RSC converting Chemical Science to OA)

– Generational (and attitudinal) change toward copyrighted information and use of social media for file sharing, open text and data mining is recognized

• ACS Journals are positioned strongly in library marketplace – ACS Value-Based Pricing adjustments and expanded menu of

product offerings have addressed key customer pricing concerns – ACS Web Editions continue to flourish; print format continues its

(anticipated) decline – Budget constraints persist in US academic market; flexible packages

for smaller schools has been key to improved customer relations – Eurozone economic situation is spotty and presents some risk – Emerging BRICKS economies present opportunities for growth

• “ACS  is  Open”  multi-pronged strategy positions Society for emerging mixed article economy – Subscriptions – Author/Sponsor OA publishing charges – Freely available versions (e.g. repository postings)

ACS Central Science: A new  journal  that’s  free  to  both  readers and authors ACS Editors’  Choice: Free public access to new research of importance to the global community; one article each day ACS Author Rewards: Encouraging ACS authors to choose open access with a $60-million stimulus program ACS AuthorChoice: Expanded to include new options to help authors meet open access requirements, including ACS Certified Deposit of the published article version of record.
