MESSAGE FROM THE WORKSAFE VCFL Shayne WardTHE INTERLEAGUE EXPERIENCE: V/LINE CUP

At the time of writing, we are in the thick of the V/Line Cup

Under 15 Carnival at various venues in and around

Melbourne including, for the first time, 5 games played

regionally on Saturday and Sunday to kick off the 2011 Cup

in Ballarat and Bendigo.

Nearly 550 of the best Under 15 footballers from across the

VCFL have represented their region and have now

returned to their home clubs for matches this weekend.

Some 272 WorkSafe VCFL clubs have been represented by

players across the carnival.

A few of the fortunate (and deserving) ones would have

returned home as Divisional champions after holding the

trophy aloft after the Final day’s play. It is a trophy steeped

in history. The engraving on the Divisional 1 Cup goes back

to 1949, where it is engraved that the Goulburn Valley won

the inaugural carnival.

From then until now, every football region of the state is

represented on it. The mind boggles at 62 years of tradition

and football pedigree engraved on that cup, of the bush

legends and those that went on to great heights in the

VFL/AFL that have played in those teams.

History shows that nearly 60% of the players in the 2011

V/Line Cup will get a chance to join with TAC teams over

the next few years, and from there, to the national Under

18 teams and a chance to be drafted through the

National Draft Camp into the AFL.

This year we have seen Gippsland V/Line Cup

representative Dyson Heppell stamp himself on the AFL at

Essendon as a first year player. Bulldog Andrew Hooper is

a two time V/Line Cup representative. Current captains

Luke Hodge and Jonathan Brown were V/Line Cup players.

Joel Selwood, Steele Sidebottom, Shaun Higgins and

Patrick Dangerfield are AFL stars that got their first chance

to impress at the V/Line Cup.

We have no doubt that all the young players in the 2011

V/line Cup will return home with football memories and

valuable experiences that they can both cherish and pass

onto their team mates and clubs.

For many footballers, the experience of interleague

football may rank as the highest achievement in their

playing memories. The chance to join the best players in

the competition to take on a common opponent is a

special experience as a sportsman. The experience –

whether you are an Under 15 V/Line Cup player or a Senior

State player has a similar impact.

Every representative player could describe the nerves as

they wandered into the change rooms for the first time and

meet those guys that have been opponents up to that

point; the feeling as you come together in a huddle before

a new coach as a group for the first time; the sense you

get as the ball flicks around at training and you notice the

rise in the tempo and intensity.

It may be hard to quantify the value in watching how other

guys prepare themselves for the matches and how they go

the extra mile to get the best out of themselves, but it is a

common thought we hear from players after their

representative campaigns.

The next time you meet your ‘teammates’ it is likely to be

as opponents again on your home ground. You can’t help

it, but win, lose or draw you have a connection with these

guys – and you will have this for the rest of your playing

days.

We congratulate all the players, coaches and support staff

that has made the 2011 V/Line Cup Carnival such a

success; we wish you all the best for the rest of your football

seasons. We hope that we will see you progress through

the interleague program of the WorkSafe VCFL in the years

to come. We also say the same for all the WorkSafe VCFL

umpires that have had the honour of officiating at the 2011

V/Line Cup.

The next WorkSafe VCFL representative feature will be the

WorkSafe Country Championships which will be played

across the VCFL on Saturday May 28th. Go to

www.vcfl.comau to see the fixtures.

BFL TRIUMPHS in Clash with AFL CairnsThe MECU Ballarat Football League U/16.5 Interleague side

has recorded a victory over a U/17 AFL Cairns

representative side in an exhibition match at the Eastern

Oval under light on Saturday night with the final score as

Ballarat FL 11.13.79 defeated AFL Cairns 4.9.33.

This was the second time both sides have competed

against each other following last year’s match in Sunbury

which AFL Cairns won. Operations Manager Aaron Nunn

said, “We were to have the opportunity to play AFL Cairns

again following the success of last year’s match. We are

extremely keen to continue this rivalry and play this match

on an annual basis.”

The BFL fielded a team full of players expected to represent

the league later in the year against Bendigo and Geelong

despite the absence of several V-Line Cup players who will

compete this week in the State Championships. AFL Cairns

also had a few players missing following injuries from earlier

practice matches from their trip to Victoria that is so

important for the development of their players.

The match was evenly poised up until half time with either

side failing to take advantage of opportunities to put their

opponent away. However it was all the Ballarat Football

League after half time as their fresh legs and toll of such a

jam packed scheduled start to show on the players of AFL

Cairns. Final scores were as follows:

Ballarat FL 11.13 – 79 df AFL Cairns 4.9 - 33

Ballarat FL details:

Goals: Jack Romerill 3, Luther Baker, Darcy Gallop, Brandon

Holmes, Matthew Johns, Mathew Short, James Vanderkley,

Zac Budge, Josh Benfield

BEST: Darcy Gallop, Luther Baker, Jack Romerill, Kirby

Coach of the Ballarat Football League U/16.5 side Greg

Stewart said, “Our boys played really well tonight against

some really good opposition. We were thrilled to be able

to provide our players with this opportunity to play against

some quality opposition and will provide us with a really

preparation for interleague games later on in the season.”

CYBERSAFETY – A MODERN CONUNDRUM

Barely a week goes by these days when we do notsee the trials and repercussions of posts, tweets, texts and comments in the online world having aserious effect on the wellbeing of individuals andorganisations. At the time of writing we read of theState Government considering significant criminalpenalties for cyberbullying and stalking.Whether it be cyberbullying directed towardschildren in the schoolyard, parties getting out ofcontrol due to gatecrashers, people losing theiremployment due to careless Facebook or Twitterposts, and of course, the more famous incidenceswe see that have befallen AFL and other sportingstars who use new communications devicesinappropriately – the risks and potential damagefrom new technology is a real and presentconundrum. The mobile phone and the home computer haveopened up a brand new world of communicationsthat has far reaching benefits to us all – but also hasfair level of risk in the mix as well. The WorkSafe VCFLhas in recent seasons experienced the misuse ofvarious forms of social media extending into oursporting environment.

It has become clear that the misuse, and a generallack of education about the pitfalls of technologyis required by society in general, and in ourexperience, by those that play and administerfootball in the WorkSafe VCFL. The WorkSafe VCFLhas been required to deal with an increasingnumber of cases in which our members areaggrieved and have been vilified in the content ofposts, texts, and blogs.

With this in mind, the VCFL engaged Susan McLeanof Cyber Safety Solutions to develop a cyber safetypolicy that would help to protect our members frominappropriate behavior and to provide a processfor members to file complaints.

Susan McLean is Australia’s foremost expert in thearea of cyber safety and young people and was amember of Victoria Police for 27 years. Widelyknown as the ‘Cyber Cop’ she was the first VictoriaPolice Officer appointed to a position involvingCybersafety and young people. Susan has beenworking closely with the AFL on their educationprogram for players on cybersafety to educate andminimise the risks and harm that this type ofcommunication can cause.

The VCFL Board has determined to take the sameview of inappropriate online material as any otheractivity that, during the playing of a game, would

result in disciplinary action.

Cyberbullying includes, but is not limited to, thefollowing misuses of technology: harassing, teasing, intimidating, racially vilifying or threatening anotherperson by sending or posting inappropriate orhurtful messages, instant messages, text messages, phone messages, digital pictures or images, or webpostings (including social networking sites andforums) and the sending, receiving and possessionof naked or sexually explicit images of a person.Club members must also be aware that postingsfrom their individual accounts, whether done bythemselves or another person will remain theresponsibility of the account owner. We have heardfirst hand that some people have divulged theirpasswords and account details to other peopleand friends – we strongly discourage this andremind them of how risky this action could be.

If a WorkSafe VCFL member feels they have beenthe victim of such misuse of technology in thesporting environment, it is recommended they saveand store the material on their computer or phone. They should then print a copy of the material andimmediately report the incident to the relevant clubor league representative.

All reports will be investigated fully in accordanceto VCFL Rule 5.0. Any proven charges willautomatically lead to a minimum 2 matchsuspension for a registered player, or if by a nonplaying member, a penalty as determined by theLeague. Players charged with these types ofoffences for a second or subsequent time will facederegistration.

The issue of cyberbullying and cybersafety is beingtaken very seriously by the WorkSafe VCFL, and theimplementation of this policy, along with educationsessions across the state, will be central in furtherfostering a culture of respect and care across oursport.

We call on all players, parents and officials tocarefully read the VCFL Cybersafety Policy andopenely discuss the issue with their family, clubmembers and supporters.

Technology is part of our everyday lives and themisuse of such, whether it is intentional of not, willnot be accepted by the WorkSafe VCFL.

For further information and advice, please call theVCFL Training Manger, Dean Rice on 03) 8341 6081.

CLUB NOTES

With Round 2 done and dusted round 1 sees the Ballarat

Swans play host to our old rivals in Redan FNC. Coming off

a win in round 2 will give the Ballarat Swans confidence

going into the season opener….confused yet. All today’s

Netball and football will prove to be great contests.

Football: Last week in very trying conditions the Ballarat

Swans were able to overcome an East Point challenge

which threatened the swan’s advantage at the final break.

However the Swans put pay to any challenge with early

goals and went on to record a confidence building win.

The reserves commenced well with players finding targets

and applying pressure to their opponents. This intensity

dropped off however in the second and third quarters and

allowed East Point to get on top. The last quarter was

entertaining with the Swans getting back into the game

with early goals. However the final siren beat them.

The U18.5 enjoyed the best part of the day which allowed

for long kicking and good marking skills but for some reason

goals were hard to come buy. East Point has always been

difficult to beat and today was no exception. There was

nothing between the two sides for the first three quarters but

East Point found a way to goals and were able to come

away with the win.

Netball: The Netball fraternity could not be more pleased

with their start to the 2011 season. All

grades with the exception of the

seniors recorded good wins. By all

accounts the seniors took it up to their

more fancied opponents and it wasn’t until late in the last

term that East Point got in front and stayed there until the

final bell. Today’s games will not be easy against Redan, but

the swans have the talent to take the four games.

Around the Club: Memberships are now available please

contact John Smith, Rob James or Colin Duffy for

Membership enquiries.

After the game today all are invited back to the Social Club

for drinks and afterwards enjoy a meal from Kate’s Kitchen.

Today the BFNC will be announcing new Major Sponsors for

the 2011 season at a sponsor’s luncheon prior to the main

game.

Social News: Player’s Auction tonight commencing from

7.30pm. All players and netballers will be placed in lots and

auctioned off to the highest bidder. Even if you are not

interested in bidding come along and enjoy a great social

night. I can ensure you the auction booklet will be worth the

read alone.

CLUB NOTES

Welcome back for Season 2011! Today the Red Lion Kangaroos will take on the reigning BFLPremiers from 2010, Lake Wendouree. It will be a tussle onboth the field and the court and both our senior footballand netball teams will be out to prove they can match itwith the two best teams of last season. Our first twilightmatch last week proved a huge success with a good crowdand a lot of support from our members after the game –hope to see you all back in the rooms again tonight.Football: A disappointing final few minutes saw the seniorsgo down to the Swans last week in what had been anexciting and close match. New recruits Bilton and Drehershowed why they are at the club, as too did former U18.5player Brad Whittaker. The Reserves had a very good winwith John Robinson having a good day out kicking 6 goals. The Under 18.5’s after some poor kicking for goal got on topof Ballarat and scored themselves a very good win. Netball: Only one win last week from our senior team wasn’tthe way we wanted to start the season, so all four teams willbe out today to make amends. The seniors were very goodbut will need to be at their very best when they take on theLakers today. The matches over the past two yearsbetween these two teams have been first class games ofnetball, so get down to the court to watch and cheer thegirls on. New line ups in both the Reserve and C Gradeteams will have very tough matches today and althoughneither had a win last week, they have potential for good

improvement over the coming weeks. The U18.5’s didn’t play at their bestgoing down to a very strong Ballaratunit by 10 goals but we will seesomething different from them today.Thursday Night Teas: They’re back bigger and better thanbefore! We welcome all members, supporters, players, family and friends to a great night of good food and goodcompany. Doors open at 5.30pm.Memberships/Sponsorships: We encourage all Kangasupporters to take out a membership for Season 2011. A fullrange of Membership and Sponsorship Packages areavailable, all are reasonably priced. This is a great way tonot only financially support the club but to also feel more apart of the club socially. Catch up with Karen today formore information.Social News: Dates to Lock In: East Point FNC Ball – Saturday 11th June 2011 Team of the Decade – Saturday 2nd July 2011 – Celebratethe First Ten Years!More information will be provided in coming weeks – watchthis space!

CLUB NOTES

Hi everyone and welcome to the 2011

season.

It has again been a long, tough

preseason and we are sure we are ready.

Thanks to all our coaches, players and support staff for the

work you have already done to be ready for round one.

Our netballers all embark on their title defences after a

stellar 2010 season.

But that was last year…………….

We now look forwarding to getting out of the blocks and

setting the pace again.

We are sure our well drilled and game ready girls will be up

for their grand final rematch.

Good luck.

Our footballers have also been doing heaps of work.

With a fairly large turnover of players, in the off season, it is

very exciting to see so many new faces around the club.

Our under eighteen and reserves teams will be looking to

get off to a good start and build a firm foundation for the

rest of the year. Once again there is a lot of new faces in

both teams.

The senior boys also have a title defence. The preparation

so far has been faultless.

Now all that is left is to put your best foot forward in round

one. The hard work has beendone and now it’s time to

enjoy yourselves.

Don’t forget DJ Prezz at the club, one time only, tonight

after the game.

CLUB NOTES

Welcome to all Bloods players, members and supporters for

the 2011 season. What a blockbuster season it promises to

be. Round 1 sees us at home to our traditional rival Melton

South for a home game derby under lights. This is the first

time we have hosted a home game under the new lights

and we are very excited by the prospect. The lighting

project has been a joint effort between the club, Ballarat

Football League and Melton Shire and we thank everyone

for their hard work and determination to get the project

under way and completed in time. Also we will be playing

in new jumpers with the generous support of our major

sponsors, Wida Plumbing Supplies and Metricon. Without

their support and the support of all of our sponsors we could

not exist.

The Bloods have been fortunate to attract some new

recruits to the club and we welcome them and their families

to Maccy Park. On the Coaching side, Raaky is in for his third

year as our senior coach and makes no secret that the goal

is to play finals football in 2011. Bob Heaney has taken over

as the reserves coach and Gunny has taken up the role of

Under 18.5 coach.

The netball girls under the able

direction of Amy have recruited well

and strong teams will be fielded in all

sides. Willtrans have once again been

to the fore in the support of the netball girls and we thank

them for their generousity.

We also have a number of new team managers this season

and they will be seeking assistance from parents and

supporters in filling roles such as time keeping and

interchange stewards which are vital to the efficient running

of the club. We ask players and supporters to make the

team Managers job easy by volunteering for jobs when

asked.

All players are reminded that memberships are now due

and payable. See Steve Undy or Gunny who will be

delighted to accept your money.

Also please keep an eye out for our social calendar which

promises an entertaining season.

CLUB NOTES

A great start to the season by the youngPanthers on Saturday Night. A nightmatch to kick the season off is a littledifferent to the norm, but something weneed to get used to as 5 of our first 6

games are either night or twilight.I started off the day with a quick visit to Bakers Delight for some preEaster Hot Cross Buns. Best Hot Cross Bun going around, and I knowMick and Mark will appreciate the compliment as they do it hardwith 1.00 am starts to get them just right. Headed home andplayed with the kids on the new PS3 from The Good Guys. I thenhad to drop off the car for a service at Melton Toyota, but still hadtime for lunch at Q Lounge before heading down to theclubrooms. The girls battled hard in the netball, but unfortunately couldn't getover the line. The rain wasn’t easing and it look slippery under footas the panthers tried desperately hard to claw their way back into the games. The Devils were just too strong in all grades. My expertise lies in football, so headed over to watch the Under18's. A great start by the boys, and they were able to record acomfortable 30 point win. Sean Blake is a talent, and his firstquarter was fantastic. Keep up the good work boys. The reserveswas a struggle from the outset. A number of injuries at this time ofyear is not helped by players unavailable through travel and work.We also had a couple of late withdrawals through illness. Thanksto some old fellas filling in, and also to the Under 18's who doubledup. The end result was a 56 point loss. The Devils were too strongover ball and out played our young cubs. The general consensus around the traps was that Melton SouthSeniors were going to struggle all year and perhaps not win agame. After the first 10 minutes of football, those predictionsseemed to be on the money, with Darley 4 goals to 0 in front. We

were able to stem the flow and go in at 1/4 time trailing by 4 goals. No real structural changes at 1/4 time, just instructions to attackthe footy and support your team mates. The 2nd quarter waswhere we gained belief we could be competitive. Although wedidn't make inroads on the scoreboard, we started to win the footyand be competitive in general play. Notman controlled the backline and provided plenty of attack deep into the forward line. The 3rd quarter was another good effort. Kusta was leading byexample in the middle, with good support from Dougie and Ash.The forwards were working much better and Rex was giving us amobile target. The often over looked 1%s by Train, Massive, Deanoand Juz provided scoring opportunities. Sutts was in vintage formleading up hard giving us a target. While Rhys and Tolly were ontop down back, and young Boofa Hibbert showed his class bytaking a strong contested pack mark and steadying the ship. Wewere on top in general play and within a goal at 3 quarter time.We finished the last quarter full of run, a credit to our fitness coachStuart Hinks. The on-ballers were getting first hands on the ball, andthe forwards continued to work well for each other. Draca andLuber worked well through the middle, and the backs totally shutout the dangerous Darley forwards. The crowd from Bay 13gradually gained voice, and went bananas when we hit the front. The boys pressed on, and came home with a well deserved win.The atmosphere in the rooms was fantastic as it had been anumber of years since we have beaten Darley. It was mentionedto the players after the game that we have now set a level ofperformance that will be expected week in and week out. Onewin does not make a season. This week we take on our cross town rivals the Bloods. It’s alwaysa tough encounter for all sides and the first we look for when thefixtures are handed out. Good luck to all teams competing today.

On the playing side the club welcomes back Jay Cheepafter a couple of seasons in South Australia as well as CamMcCabe and Zane Williams along with new players DavidKovacevic Dale Cuinik and Michael Coleman. The exodusof a number of players from the club during the summerseason has provided an opportunity to the youngermembers of the club to play senior football and the clubpractice matches against Moama, Aberfeldie and Sunshineprovided a change for these players to push for seniorselection as well as allowing the new coaches toexperiment with different game plans. The form shown bya number of players in these practice matches has beenencouraging and it looks like there will be some difficultnights at the selection table this year as the club looksforward to improving upon its final performances of lastyear.

A successful club needs to have aband of loyal financial members andthose who support the club areencouraged to become financialmembers of the club. CLUB NOTES

Last week saw mixed results with the

Devils winning 5 of the 7 contests

against Melton South, with only one

being on the football field.

Playing under lights the Devils senior team played a great

first half leading by six goals midway through the second

quarter. The Panthers came back and ultimately beat the

Devils by 28 points. Best players last week were Harley Inglis,

Sam McAllester, Brad Inglis, Dwayne Edwards and Sam

Hitchings

The Reserves were our only winners in the football defeating

the Panthers by 55 points. Shaun Deckert kicked an

impressive five goals with Dougy Shaw following with two

goals. After being up by 43 points at half time, fatigue

kicked in and the match became a slog. Darley did

enough though to be victorious in the end. Best players

were Chris Young, Kane Stewart, Liam Moody, Rylie

Mayfosh, Ash Mayfosh and Shaun Deckert.

The Under 18’s were simply outplayed against the stronger

Panthers. After half time the Devils came together and

outscored our opposition but unfortunately it was too late.

The Panthers defeated the Devils by 30 points. Best players

were Jarrod Mayfosh, Matt Jones, Todd Delahey, Jordan

Spiteri and Liam Davies.

NETBALL

All of our netballers should be congratulated with their

clean sweep of the board in all games on Saturday against

the Panthers.

The under 18’s started the day with a 34-15 defeat over the

Panthers. Ashby Keep and Ana Kelly lead a strong attack

together Tarni Lopes with an excellent defence helped

keep the Panther’s at bay.

Our C Grade team followed with a 21-19 win over the

Panthers. With Melton South leading by 4 goals at midway

through the 3rd the Devils fought back to win by two goals.

The Reserves followed suit with a winning by 5 goals, 30-25.

The girls worked hard to play as a team. Jodie Hubble gave

great drive through the centre. Sarah and Rylee were

shooting well in the ring. Congratulation to Rylee on playing

her 100th game.

Finally the seniors gave us our biggest win against the

Panthers – 48-15. The team started off strong with Liv and

Brooke playing great defence. The rain slowed play down

a little with a few slips. Alix played really well with plenty of

intercepts throughout the game.

WHITE RIBBON DAYThe Ballarat Football and Netball League support the local White Ribbons Day campaign. White Ribbon

Day is a campaign by men to end violence against women.

Wearing a White Ribbon

• Wearing a White Ribbon is not a badge of

purity or a badge of perfection. It does not mean that the wearer has perfect relationships.

• It means that this man believes that violence towards women is unacceptable.

• It is a visible sign that the wearer does not support or condone the use of violence against women.

• Everyone can show their commitment to

ending violence against women by wearing a white ribbon.

• Proceeds from purchasing a White Ribbon go towards changing community attitudes through high

impact awareness campaigns.

BFUA UMPIRES REPORTThe Ballarat Football Umpires Association (BFUA) looks

forward to the 2011 football season and all its challenges.

Providing umpires to the Ballarat Football League, Central

Highlands Football League and Maryborough

Castlemaine District Football & Netball League will no

doubt be a challenging exercise. It will provide the

opportunity to develop and appoint umpires at three

different levels and football environments.

Throughout the preseason the core umpiring group have

lifted their intensity to far greater levels than in previous

years, aiming to increase overall fitness. Having a higher

level of fitness improves focus, concentration and

decision making resulting in a higher and more consistent

performance.

The BFUA has engaged the Leading Teams model to help

shape it culture and have done extensive preliminary

work with all leagues, coaches and clubs regarding

communication, relationship building and environmental

provision and processes.

Along with the ongoing zero tolerance approach to

umpiring abuse changes in 2011 are the advantage rule,

deliberate out of bounds and heightened protection of

the player regarding head high contact and bumping.

The BFUA have a range of coaches umpiring within the

V/Line Academy (AFL Pathway Program) which is

testament to the increasing depth and abilities within the

BFUA ranks. It is these opportunities that will further

increase the abilities and development of the entire

group. And it’s these developmental opportunities that

will increase the standard of umpiring across the region

the BFUA officiates.

With the appointment of a Director of Umpires, three

specific coaches, a fitness advisor and five umpire

observers for weekend matches the BFUA envisages

continual development throughout the umpiring ranks.

Finally the BFUA wish all leagues, clubs, coaches and

players all the best for a successful 2011 campaign.

Yours in football

CLUB VOLUNTEER UMPIRES

Club Volunteer Umpire Sessions are going to

be held on Wednesday 4th May with one

being held at the City Oval and the other at

Maddingley Park.

These sessions are COMPULSARY for all

JUNIOR CLUBS. A representative must be in

attendance from EACH JUNIOR CLUB. Senior

clubs are also encouraged to have a

representative attend! The session will be a

great way for our Volunteer Umpires to further

their knowledge and understanding in

umpiring and hopefully give them some

added confidence when they are required to

fill the official duties as an umpire in what ever

games they are required to fill on a weekend.

The session will not only cover Rule

Interpretation. They will also cover Umpire

Code of Conduct and also how to handle a

possible inflammatory situation while

officiating on the field.

The sessions will commence at 6:00pm at both

venues.

Should you have any further queries, please

contact Liam Brady on 0408 518 908 or

[email protected] .

BFLNA Netball ReportWhat a big summer it has been in netball!

It only feels like yesterday we were all at the Eastern Oval

watching the Lakers take a clean sweep of the

competition by winning the Grand Final in all four age

groups. Can anyone stop their run of four consecutive

premierships in the senior competition or will their

dominance continue to an unprecedented fifth flag in a

row. The loss of Sue Nalder will no doubt have an effect on

their ability to score at ease however the blow has been

softened somewhat by the return of premiership player

Kara Hart. The Lakers will still enter this season as the team

to beat and rightly so, you can’t win four straight

premierships and not enter a season as favourites.

You can sense a feeling of the unknown heading into this

season. Teams will be lining up to knock the Lakers off their

perch and at the front of the line will be their opponents

from the 2010 Grand Final, East Point. The Kangaroos will

still be hurting from last year’s loss especially after proving

they could beat them in the Qualifying Final. East Point

were presented with several great opportunities to beat

the Lakers but failed to perform on the day and no doubt

they will take that pain and keep that memory in the

background of their minds when they enter this season.

Although finishing third last season, you still felt that

Bacchus Marsh were a fair way off the mark last year. The

Cobras have taken some huge steps over the past couple

of seasons and need to continue that momentum by

showing they can beat a Lake Wendouree or East Point.

There is plenty of talent in this Bacchus Marsh line up and

with another year of experience under the belt, 2011 could

be the year the Cobras stand up and be counted.

In a similar position last season were Redan. A new season

brings a brand new outlook to the Lion’s Den with the

appointment of new coach Kate McMahon. You just get

the feeling the tides have turned at the City Oval with the

construction of a brand new court and the recruitment of

several new players, the Lions just may be in with a chance

of causing an upset or two this season and challenge for

the main prize. The new facilities look amazing at the City

Oval and are due for their unveiling in round 3 on April 30th.

There is a sense of excitement at Redan that 2011 could

be a year of big things for the club and a senior netball

premiership is certainly not out of the question.

Ballarat’s pre-season has also been eventlful with a majority

of last season’s players signing on again for another year

at the helm. The Swans took a step backward last year and

will be looking to start the season on a positive note against

the Kangaroos on Saturday night. In all honesty, the Swans

were a fair way off the mark last season despite almost

causing an upset in the finals that could be largely

attributed to a Sophie Caldow injury halfway through the

match. Capable of serving up an unpredictable victory

from time to time, the Swans do have a knack of being the

thorn in the side of a number of teams and they will look to

continue that trend this year.

Rounding out last year’s top 6 was Darley. The Devils have

be bouyed in recent weeks after the signing of a couple

of key players and will look to improve on their sixth place

finish last season. Coach Marika Barnes was pleased with

the progress of her side over the past 2 years especially

considering the results in seasons prior to that. This year the

Devils will look to close the gap between themseves and

the top four or five sides and what better way to do that

than to start with a victory over the Panthers at the Melton

Recreation Reserve this weekend.

Of the rest of the sides in the competition, who will stand

up and progress. There should be plenty of oppotunities for

improvement this year and if one of the bottom five sides

are going to push their way in to the top six, they’ll need to

cause an upset or two along the way.

2011 should be an exciting year for the Ballarat Football

League Netball Association. This year marks the 20 year

anniversary of the competition’s inception and to

celebrate, the league announced their best ever team at

last night’s season launch. The competition continues to

thrive with the successful introduction of a C Grade

competition last year and with most clubs have more than

enough players to fill their four sides, the BFLNA continues

to grow. The league will also conduct some market

research in the possible development of a junior netball

competition to coincide with the junior football

competition. This concept has the ful support of the junior

football clubs and will be an important step in the

development and growth of BFL clubs.

Good luck to all sides competing this weekend and starting

next weekend. The BFNL wishing everyone a successful

start to the 2011 season and we look forward to catching

delighted to announce an “ALL Star Netball
