Christmas,and the New Year is � nally here and this is our last issue of Acomb Village News of 2013. Many thanks to all our contributors, advertisers and especially to our delivery team.

The new Year project is the Acomb Directory which will have all the important contact details of all the public services, clubs, shops and businesses in the West of York. Make sure your in the directory by sending your info to [email protected] this is an important local project.

We can all see the lovely Christmas trees above the shops in Acomb which is an initiative between Acomb Alive and City of York Council, which is really appreciated. Acomb Alive have been very busy all year with activities to try and increase the footfall and enjoyment of visiting Acomb shops, they are doing a fantastic job.

Adam Festival another new event for Acomb was great success,hopefully it will be an annual event and show to everyone that Acomb is a great place to live and work.

Finally doesn’t the Christmas tree on Acomb Green look lovely. It’s thanks to Friends of Acomb Green working hard to provide it along with the annual carol service. Unfortunately the weather was against us in the summer and the fair had to be cancelled but the FOAG will be working hard to have it in 2014.

May we wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year.

ST JOHN AMBULANCE ACOMB UNIT LOOKS TO MARK 75TH ANNIVERSARY WITH LIFE SAVERS REUNION To celebrate seventy fi ve years of fi rst aid work in the community, the

Acomb unit of leading fi rst aid charity, St John Ambulance is planning

to stage a reunion of life savers in York to mark its milestone

anniversary next year. As part of its plans, the charity is calling for

founding and retired members and their families to get in touch with

life saving stories.Tim Fallows, Unit Manager of Acomb Combined Adults Unit said: “We

are keen to hear from volunteers or their families who were part of

the Acomb unit over our 75 year history. We’d love to hear real stories,

receive photographs and memorabilia from those involved to help us

create a timeline of the amazing and dedicated work carried out in

and around the City of York. It is important to recognise that our

members contributed an amazing 3,895 hours of voluntary work last

year alone and all this around busy family and work commitments.

We’d really like to bring as many people together as possible to

celebrate their dedication to be the difference between lives lost and

lives saved.”The charity plans to host a fundraising reunion dinner in July 2014

with guest speaker James Brennan, Head of Marketing and Sponsorship

at York Racecourse and to mount a mini exhibition showcasing the

work of the unit and is appealing to the York community to come

forward with ideas. To get in touch, email [email protected].

St John Ambulance volunteers with the Acomb unit regularly provide life

saving skills in the City, including at venues such as York Races, York

Minster and the York City FC football stadium, as well as numerous

community events.As the nation’s leading fi rst aid charity, St John Ambulance believes that nobody should die

because they needed fi rst aid and didn’t get it. Yet every year, up to 140,000* people die in

situations where fi rst aid could have given them a chance to live. St John Ambulance teaches

people fi rst aid so that they can be the difference.
