From the Editor
A bumper issue crammed full of controversy, praise and criticism.
The Village Voice is really straining at the seams and we’re attracting more and more businesses wanting to advertise. We are looking at ways of incorporating more pages, but that requires a bigger printer and we are looking for a new home for it as a result and for partners who may be willing to share the cost. Do get in touch if your organisation is interested.
Next year marks the Village Voice’s 20th year. I don’t remember the exact month it first rolled off the printers as a single sheet of A4, it might have been September, but it has certainly grown in those twenty years.
But before then we have Christmas. Have a happy and peaceful Christmas and here’s to a prosperous 2013.

Litton Winter Market
Litton Village Green on Friday 7th December from 5 pm until 9 pm will
be given over to “shopping how it used to be”. 20 local traders will be selling food and gifts for Christmas, ranging from fish, fruit and veg, home made puddings and pickles to specialist jewellery, wooden toys, cards, woolly scarves and even garden furniture.
Santa’s Grotto will be in Litton School and there will be indoor games for the children. The good people of Litton will warm your soul whatever the weather by selling spicy mulled wine alongside a winter BBQ. A great way to do the Christmas shopping!
The Litton Primary School Christmas fair is on the same evening as Litton Christmas Market. An opportunity to do some unique Christmas Shopping in the village and get into the Christmas Spirit!
Cressbrook ConcertCressbrook Band is holding its annual Christmas Concert at the fabulous setting of Cressbrook Hall. Due to growing
demand year on year, we are performing on two nights Friday 7th & Saturday 8th December (doors open 6.30 pm with start time at 7.30 pm going on till 10.30 pm ish!). The evening starts with traditional Christmas music combined with new arrangements of familiar pieces. A fantastic two course buffet follows along with a glass of wine (both included in the entry ticket price £15).
After this you get a chance to sing along with the band and practice your carolling! To find out more and book tickets, please call Harriet at the Hall on 01298 871289 or 07738 974054 or email [email protected]. Advance booking is recommended. We hope to see you there!

Wakes Royalty
Dear sir,
As a member of Tideswell community, I feel a need to voice my concerns regarding this years events involving Tideswell wakes royalty. The two young ladies in question have carried out their duties in the village with enthusiasm and dignity whenever they have been present. As an onlooker at the Remembrance Parade this year I was very disheartened to see that they had not laid a wreath, as is tradition in the village, and seemed to have been overlooked and stood at the back of the crowd as if not involved at all.The same situation was also noted at the community bonfire.

These two delightful young girls have been a delight to watch over the last two years of their service and seemed to have been pushed aside.Understanding there is now a new wakes committee which hopefully all the village are grateful for, I cant help but think maybe they should remember what hard work and dedication the two young ladies have put in over the last two years.

Tideswell Singers
We hope you like our new logo reflects a vibrant group of singers
who embrace current trends whilst recognising the importance of the familiar.
Tideswell Singers have been in existence for over twenty years and we are continually developing. We are keen for our music making to keep fresh and move forward by approaching music which is new to us.
Our next concert, ‘Christmas Voices’ is at 7:30pm on Wednesday 12 December at The Old Grammar School. What could be more traditional than a mid-December concert telling the Christmas story in cosy surroundings with the promise of mulled wine/fruit punch and mince pies?
So here is the twist - rather than familiar carols, Tideswell Singers will be performing a selection from the Manchester Carols interspersed with reflections from the less prominent characters in the story, written by Buxton based writer, Caroline Small.
The choir, with regular accompanist Sue Clark, will be joined by Buxton U3A Recorder Ensemble with bells adding to the seasonal effect.
‘The Manchester Carols’ were first performed at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2008. As all who worked on them - librettist, Carol Ann Duffy (appointed Poet Laureate in 2009), composer Sasha Johnson Manning, conductor, musicians and children all live in Manchester, that is what they are called.
Tickets (£6, including refreshments) available from Tideswell Stores, Litton Village Shop and on the door.
For more information call Carol Bowns 01298 213 577 or visit www.
tideswellsingers.org.uk
You can hear traditional carol singing from Tideswell Singers at Litton Christmas Market Friday 7 December, Litton Church Friday 14
December and Chatsworth Courtyard 15 December.
In the New Year we will be working for another Come & Sing event in Tideswell Church Saturday 20 April. We will welcome over one hundred singers to join in sacred music through the centuries in a building that has changed very little over that time.
Tideswell Singers welcomes new singers in all voices. We meet on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm in Litton Village Hall. Please use contact details above if you are interested in joining us.
Village Carol Singing
Members from our churches will be singing in the season on Saturday
15th at 9.30 am, outside the Co-op, and on Wednesday 19th at Nicholson Court and our local pubs, meeting by the Crib at 7 pm.
Any money collected will go to Embrace the Middle East, and in particular to health care projects in Bethlehem. If you would like to join in, please do. The more the merrier!

Tideswell Cinema
An ‘enchanted evening’ comes to Tideswell on Wednesday 12th
December, as we show the classic and much loved film SOUTH PACIFIC, at 7.30pm in The George.
Made in 1958, this is a romantic musical with serious undertones of racism and war. As the fighting gets closer to the idyllic South Pacific island, the drama intensifies, and relationships become more complex.
Music is by Rogers and Hammerstein, and the film is full of familiar favourites, such as “There is no-one like a dame”, “Bali Ha’i”, and “I’m gonna wash that man right out of my hair”. The film has been digitally remastered, and is sure to brighten the spirit whatever the weather outside!
Guest members (£4.75) are welcome to take any remaining seats after 7.15 pm. (If members know they will be late please reserve seats with Tony (872379) or Margaret (871681) know in advance.)
Funeral Notices
Sir, I write with regards to last month’s insensitive article Funeral Notices in
Passing.
I could not believe what I was reading. I did not go to the funeral director and say as a grieving relly (as it was put) I wish to arrange a funeral as my relly’s popped her clogs. How insensitive. This issue of funeral notices has gone on since May 2011. I know this as my sister’s was one of the first notices to be taken out of the window and put in the cabinet for unwanted items. This caused us a lot of distress. I understood from the chairman of the parish council that the matter was in hand and that a place for a cabinet was being looked in to. So come on parish council let us have less distressing poems and more action. Find a resting place for the cabinet so our cards can be displayed with the respect they deserve and this sad issue can be laid to rest and along with our loved ones, can Rest in Peace.

Bluebell Thank You
I would like to thank everyone for their good wishes on my receiving the Queen’s
Award.
I was fortunate amongst many other volunteers to receive it at a ceremony presided over by the Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire.
The Award was granted by Her Majesty as one of the first in her Jubilee Year, to the volunteers of the Hospice who do such wonderful work in saving a £1 million a year by working as receptionists, in gardening and administration, cleaning and catering, as well as those of us who raise awareness of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice by giving talks and raising money in organizing charitable events which I hope we as a village may do in April next year at my proposed coffee morning.
Thank you all for your support. Joy Bramley

Tideswell Cinema
Tideswell Cinema continues its live screenings in January. Why not gift
someone a ticket for Christmas.
The Royal Opera performance of La Bohème will be screened live at 7 pm on Tuesday 15 January with an encore at 4 pm on Sunday 20 January. This is traditional opera at its best. From a shabby garret to the bustling Café Momus to a snowy courtyard at dawn, this minutely observed panorama of 1830s Parisian life.
The National Theatre production of The Magistrate will be screened live at 7 pm on Thursday 17 January with an encore at 7.30 pm on Saturday 19 January.
Academy Award nominee and Tony Award-winner John Lithgow (Third Rock From
The Sun) takes the title role in Arthur Wing Pinero’s uproarious Victorian farce, directed by Olivier Award-winner Timothy Sheader .
The Magistrate is sure to have audiences doubled up with laughter. When amiable magistrate Posket marries Agatha little does he realise she’s dropped five years from her age - and her son’s. When her deception looks set to be revealed, it sparks a series of hilarious indignities and outrageous mishaps.
Tickets for La Bohème are priced at £12 (£10 concessions) and The Magistrate at £10 for all. General sale of tickets starts on 13 December and can be bought by email [email protected] or telephone 01298 872379.

Bonfire Thank You
Every year, so many people support the Tideswell & District Community
Association with their time & expertise to help make Tideswell’s Bonfire Night a safe, fun and family friendly night out. We couldn’t produce such a wonderful evening without them.
Thanks must go to the firework team for a spectacular display and to Julia Fell for her illuminating commentary. The band, torch carriers and royalty started the evening in style and set the tone for a memorable night. The wood collectors, bonfire builders, electricians and marshals made sure the evening was success.
Many thanks to Plasma Coatings and Rock Ltd, M Markovitz, The George Hotel, Peak Porkers, and Brookbank Design for their sponsorship. Thanks to Tindalls for the donation of the Parkin; Peaches and Tideswell Stores for cost price goods. Without all these generous donations and sponsorships we would not be able to manage the finances of the evening.
And finally many thanks to all of you that joined us, we hope you had a wonderful evening and look forward to seeing you next year.

Our Shops Need You
Talking to one of our shopkeepers highlighted to me how much our local
shops are struggling. To the point that the future of at least one of shop is at risk, Why - because not enough of us who live in the village, shop in the village.
Just stop for a moment and consider Tideswell without our village shops. Do you, like me, think the loss of our shops would be the loss of a vital part of our community?
In my experience our shops sell great produce, often locally sourced or made. If there is a particular item you want they will try and get it for you.
Often our shops are competitively priced compared to the supermarkets. Particularly if you think about the cost of fuel getting to and from the supermarket.
When I worked full time I struggled to get to our village shops when they were open. I didn’t realise that if you phone Peaches (01298 872721) or call in with an order they will deliver to your door when you get home – how good is that!
So please if you don’t want to risk losing our shops - use them!

Parish Council Matters
The meeting was held a week early this month, which meant we were unable to
welcome our new parish councillor Jennifer Bower, who is also Tideswell’s Derbyshire Dales district councillor. No members of the public attended.
Routine payments were made, and the council is on target and within budget. The current account stands at £27,756.33.
A special meeting of all councillors is to be convened to discuss the legacies of Eric Simpson and his mother. The investments are losing money at present and the council will debate the options available.
The council has ordered a funeral announcement board, which will be erected next to the Parish Council Notice Boards, on the wall of the Co-op. This will be crafted especially for the purpose to give the respect which the announcements deserve. When the board is in place, any resident of Tideswell or district may submit a notice to the council chairman Phil Swarbrick (01298 871862), who will place the notice on the board. The service will be free of charge.
The cemetery group reported that grave diggers have not always dug the graves in the allotted spaces, which has caused distress to residents. Some graves are too large and encroachment by headstones has caused problems to neighbouring graves.
The village has enjoyed the work of volunteers in the village who have made the flower beds as colourful and pretty as any in the area. If any amateur gardeners are ordering seeds and thinking about next
year’s blooms, please would they consider putting a few extra plants to one side for the gardening group. Spring will soon be here. It is so good that the donation of plants was such a success this year. We are hoping to build on that success and do even better in 2013. Please let Julie Walton have details (07815 582522) if you are able to support this community venture, and make Tideswell an even more beautiful place to live.

Tideswell Theatre: 2013
Tideswell Theatre has been very busy and 2013 looks like being another one!
Next year Africa comes to the village, when Zulu performs in St John the Baptist Church on 28th February. This exciting South African group takes the audience on a journey to the heart of Zulu culture.
In May New Perspectives come Entertaining Angels, a piece about village communities and the effect of faith and doubt on the people that live there.
Tideswell Players are already planning for 2013. In spring the idea is to have a small scale production, possibly upstairs at The George. In the autumn, the aim is to perform a large scale show with songs in Tideswell Church. A very exciting project! Like many other village organisations, the Players will also be supporting Tideswell Living History’s celebration performances.

Soroptimists Buxton
The November business meeting was well received. Members learned about
the conference in Belfast which several ladies had attended. The Charity Christmas card shop was taking place at St John’s church, Buxton and the takings will be passed on to the various charities soon. Joint presidents Dianne Doughty and Judith Pickering also gave a report on the Midlands Regional meeting , during which our own Past President Elaine McDonald was installed as Region President Elect .
The Buxton Soroptimists meet at the Old Hall Hotel, Buxton twice a month and new members are always welcome.
Soroptimist means “the best of sisters” and the organisation exists for the betterment
of women worldwide, and the improvement in human rights for all.
Along the way, we enjoy social events and fellowship with other like-minded women.

Tidza Ramblers
A gloomy Sunday morning, not the planned date for the monthly walk, so
I’d opted for reading the paper. However a phone call from a fellow rambler changed matters and a few of us set out for a short stroll.
We were soon in lively conversation with a farmer who even apologised for mud on the track. Later, in the mist horses seemed to fill the width of the lane. Four splendidly groomed animals approached pulling a carriage containing a cheery family. This
was our mood afterwards as we enjoyed a lunchtime drink in the convivial atmosphere of the George.
Our Christmas meal will again be at the Queen Anne in Hucklow. But from then on there’ll be little variation in future meals and venues - namely sandwiches and a field.

Litton Council Crisis
Does anybody know what’s going on with Litton Parish Council? Their web
site (www.littonparishcouncil.co.uk) says that four of the seven parish councillors have resigned in recent months, giving the unfortunate impression that all is not well within the team. What’s the trouble? The published October minutes (unadopted) record that the three remaining councillors agreed to discuss the minutes of the September meeting (unadopted) outside the (formal) meeting to be held in November – the June and July minutes were not approved until October. The November meeting was subsequently cancelled at short notice. There is to be no meeting in December. There seems to be a continuing dispute between some of the remaining councillors and the clerk about the running of the meetings. The advice of Derbyshire Association of Local Councils has been sought. Why have four parish councillors resigned?
All this combines to give the impression that something isn’t working properly with Litton PC. As a former chair of the parish council myself (I stood down long before the current difficulties) I am concerned about this. Does anybody else share my concerns? Does anybody have any views on what’s happening? Can anybody - parish councillors or parishioners - explain what’s going on?
David Sutherland
The Village Voice asked the Parish Council for a comment but at the time of publication nothing had been received, although the Clerk has confirmed that she had tendered her resignation.
Pencils for Ghana
The children of Bishop Pursglove School last month sent over a hundred pencils,
crayons, sharpeners and rubbers to Ghana, which I took when visiting various fair trade projects. Most went to a school in the remote village of Amankwatia, which was built as a result of the Fairtrade Premium paid to the local cocoa farmers. The overwhelming message from the villagers was “Buy more fair trade” - it makes a huge difference to their lives. Cocoa from here is used in Divine chocolate bars, and in some of the Co-op’s Fair Trade chocolate.
The same message came from workers at a fair trade banana plantation I visited. Besides enabling children to go to school, the Premium is used to build wells and provide health care. The villagers themselves discuss and decide what will most benefit their community.

Blue Bins
We have had our new bins now for a couple of months, and there have
been problems. Apparently the bin men are as frustrated as we all are. They previously worked as bin men in different areas - Serco wanted to swap everyone around so they could do it “their way” and didn’t want “local knowledge”.
The lorries are smaller and don’t hold enough so they are having to empty more frequently, wasting time.
The bin men have sent us a message: Could we please squash plastic bottles and then put the lid back on. Unsquashed they are taking up a lot of space in their smaller lorries.

Within Sight of the Gibbet
This was the title of a very extensive lecture given by Ian Morgan, to a
full house, at the opening meeting of the History Club on November 8th. His subject concerned the events that occurred around the time of the last gibbeting of a criminal in Derbyshire. This took place during the very hard times at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. It was also around the time of Robert Blincoe’s woes at Litton Mill and the reign of Parson Brown here in Tideswell, but Ian’s talk mostly concentrated on the doings of Anthony Lingard and how he murdered the lady who kept the toll-gate at Wardlow Miers. He is supposed to have given this lady’s red shoes to a female friend and these were used in evidence against him. The shoemaker who made them was a very religious man and he used to sew a biblical text into every pair of shoes that he made and so he identified them as belonging to the murdered woman. Ian told us that the story about the executed body being brought back from Derby through Chatsworth Park and thus creating a Public Right of Way was just that - a meaningless story. He also told us that the body would have been coated in tar, bound up in a cage of iron hoops and suspended on the standard 30 foot pole on a bank not far from the present Three Stags pub. This public spectacle attracted a large crowd of mawkish onlookers, so much so, that a fair was set up with it’s attendant conjurors and tricksters, and a preacher even gave a sermon underneath the gibbet. Another member of the same family was transported to Australia for robbery and here Ian showed some remarkable old
etchings depicting the convict’s conditions including one of about eight men yoked up to a plough. He also told us about the old ships which were used as prisons (the Hulks), of how Woolwich Docks were built by criminals, of the prisons on Norfolk Island, and of the prisoners who became Bush Rangers. This was a talk that really made one glad to live in the 21st century! On January 10th, Ray Slack will be telling us about the Local History of Taddington. Everyone welcome ! 8 pm. In the Institute.

Guide Leader Wanted
After much thought, I have decided to step down as Guider in Charge of 1st
Tideswell Guides. I have shared many happy times with the girls since Lynne Burns and I restarted the unit in 2006, but due to personal circumstances, I no longer feel able to maintain my commitment.
There are sixteen guides between the ages of 10 and 13 years and two enthusiastic young ‘leaders in training’, so it would be a great shame if the group should close.
If you would be interested in taking over the unit or would like to know what this involves please contact myself (tel. 872750 or email [email protected]) or the District Commissioner Katie Tanfield on 01433 621091. Free training is provided through the Girlguiding Adult Leadership Qualification and support comes from other members of the Girlguiding family within the district. No previous experience required!
