A Message FromOur Board Chairman and Club President

5Stand Up For Kids 8th Annual Gala Dinner & Auction • www.bgcconejo.org

Thank You for Standing Up For the Kids!

Dear Heroes of Youth,

Welcome to our 8th Annual “Stand Up For Kids” Gala and Fundraiser. We are so thrilled thatyou could join us in this celebration of our Youth. In this letter we would like to highlight a few things thatwe have done with the funding received from the Gala and other fundraisers over the past year.

We now have gone from serving 1200 kids last year to serving over 1850 this year. WOW! Whilebusinesses have been downsizing we have substantially increased our members. You might say that yourinvestment in our Clubs has paid high dividends and we would say you are right! We have appliedyour donations wisely and the results will yield great kids and a better society.

Our Clubs are feeling growing pains due to the high demand for our quality programs and our reputationfor outstanding Staff and Volunteers. We are addressing these needs with a Capital Campaignand facility planning to accommodate the large number of additional kids we are now serving. Ournewest Club Chaparral in Calabasas is now providing after-school programs and serving over 220members in our new classroom building.

Now with the good news of the increase in our enrollment comes the challenge; our tuition onlycovers 40% of our cost and financial aid requests have increased due to job losses and more kids. Wehave stepped up our fundraising to meet the scholarship need and appreciate your help! Brent’s Deli,North Ranch Country Club, Dole Foods and our many sponsors have all partnered with us on majorfundraisers and programs and for this we are very thankful.

Our Board of Governors has continued to grow to 36 members to help us meet the needs of ourexpanding organization. Thomas Gurtner our Gala Chairman, Dennis Predmore our North RanchTennis Chairman, Marc Hernandez our Brent’s Deli Golf Chairman have all helped us greatly to raisefunds to enable us to serve the kids.

We know it works! We know it’s good! We know great futures start at the Clubs!

Enjoy the evening and thanks so much for your support!

"Bouquet in Trompe l'oeil Frame"Inspired by Boys & Girls Club Member, Rebekah Redford(see cover story)Acrylic on canvas 38" x 38"

John Wullbrandt, a friend and artist ofFour Seasons Hotel has chosen to ‘StandUp For Kids’ and create an acrylic paintingfor this year’s Gala. Inspired by hiscollaborative artwork experience withRebekah Redford, the Boys & Girls Club’s1st place award recipient in the 2010 Gala

Art Competition, (See Cover Story on page 3) John decidedto create his Bouquet. According to John, the Bouquetrepresents the gift one gives to the winner, and Rebekah is a winner in his eyes, as she jumped the jump andturned obstacles into opportunities.

For 20 years, much of John’s work was collected by his long time mentor and patron, David Murdock. Hispaintings embellish most Castle & Cooke properties and Mr. Murdock’s private residences. The largestbody of his work can be seen on the island of Lana’i, Hawaii. There John organized the Lanai Art Centerand engaged local talent to embellish the award winning Lodge at Koele followed by Four Seasons ResortLana’i at Manele Bay. John spent 30 years traveling the world and painting. Although the artist is knownfor his prolific mural work, it is his smaller canvases that have brought him into many private collectionsinternationally.

Born in Santa Barbara, John spent 30 years traveling the world and painting. His studio is now at his homein south Santa Barbara on his family’s historic cattle ranch. His work can be viewed atwww.vlarsengalerie.com and at Two Dole Drive, Westlake Village, California.
