ACI WORLD AIRPORT TRAFFIC REPORT 2009i

Dear readers, ACI’s comprehensive annual World Airport Traffic Report 2009 is based on submissions from 1,354 airports worldwide. It is a unique source of airport passenger, cargo and aircraft movement information and adds analytical insight on the underlying reasons for the results.

In 2009, we witnessed two quite different semesters. During the first half of the year, overall traffic continued to spiral downwards due to the impact of deepening economic uncertainty and falling industrial production and GDP. Exceptional factors such as the H1N1 influenza virus made an adverse impact on traffic in May and June, reaching beyond the borders of Latin America, where the virus first appeared, to North America, Asia-Pacific and Europe.

The mid-year months ushered in the glimmer of a rebound, with traffic losses slowing and even stabilizing in a few key developing markets. Domestic traffic in emerging markets began to exhibit new expansion, not just a positive comparison to past poor performance, in part thanks to government stimulus packages that were boosting industrial output and economic stability. China, Brazil and India were leaders in this trend.

As is often the case, domestic traffic is a precursor of returning international traffic and that is what we saw in the third quarter, with general improvements in almost all markets.

The end result for the year was that despite the tremendous hit the industry took in the first term, renewed passenger traffic growth balanced out those losses, yielding a decline of 1.8 percent for the full year. At the same time, the 5.1 percent drop in aircraft movements indicates the extent to which airlines dropped routes and trimmed excessive capacity in an effort to stabilize their service offerings.

Cargo fared less well. The vertiginous drops in freight traffic seen in the first months of the year provided a clear sign of global economic stress. The reversal of that downward spiral later in the year could not make up for such steep losses. As a result, traffic for the year dropped by an average of 7.9 percent.

The in-depth analytical overview with illustrative charts and tables will help readers to see exactly how the trends evolved over the year. Regional and country-by-country results, as well as the airport-by-airport tables comprise the bulk of this over 600 page work.

I sincerely thank our members for their timely submissions and assistance in creating this unique airport industry reference work.

signs of an upswing in emerging markets. The year concluded with the fourth quarter showing renewed growth in all regions.

MArket AnD econoMic fActors in 2009

2009 traffic was characterized by a number of disparities. Domestic traffic worldwide was not as badly affected as international traffic (Figure 3). Also, performance among the regions varied significantly. Major external factors dampened demand in 2009 with differing results reflecting the degree of impact. The global recession resulted in a collapse of industrial production, world trade, business activity and spurred rising unemployment. Carriers acted quickly to reduce capacity by cutting routes and deploying smaller aircraft to protect load factors and yields in the face of falling demand for air travel.

Against the background of the worst global recession since the Second World War, passenger traffic at airports declined by 1.8% in 2009. The total number of passengers arriving and departing at airports worldwide dropped from its high of 4.882 billion in 2008 to 4.796 billion passengers in 2009 (Figure 1). Cargo tonnage fell by 7.9%, reflecting the direct impact on global markets and productivity during the severe economic downturn.

As Figure 2 illustrates, performance in the first and second half of each year traces the economic cycle. With the onset of the financial and economic crisis in 2008, traffic declined markedly in second half of the year. But the lowest point of the cycle hit airport operators in the first quarter of 2009. In the second quarter the downward spiral began to slow, yet traffic remained depressed. A flat but stable situation developed in the third quarter, with beginning
